The apartment was silent but for the rhythmic ticking of the old wall clock in the hallway. I lay in the darkened bedroom, staring at the ceiling, my heart heavy. Beside me, the bed was empty, a void where once lay the person who had been my world. I ran her fingers through her tousled hair, the familiar ache of abandonment settling into my bones.

It had been a month since she had moved out, a month since the day our love story, which had been vibrant and consuming, had unraveled into something distant and cold. She had found someone new, someone who had swept her off her feet and drawn her away from me, leaving behind a trail of fractured promises and unspoken words.

I remember the day she told me so clearly. We had sat in the living room, surrounded by the clutter of our shared life, and she had looked at me with a sadness that was both poignant and foreign. Her words had been soft but cutting.

"I’ve met someone," she had said, her voice trembling slightly. "And... I need to be honest with you. I think it’s time for us to...to go our separate ways."

The finality of her words had left me reeling. It wasn’t just the new boyfriend that had hurt; it was the realization that the love they had built together was so fragile, so easily undone. I had fought against the tidal wave of grief, trying to hold on to the fragments of our shared life. But in the end, I had been left alone, staring at the emptiness of the apartment we had once called home.

When she had first met her new boyfriend, I had tried to be understanding, even supportive. I had to convinced myself that her happiness was worth more than my own heartache. But now, in the cold, dark silence of our former bed, I was forced to confront the reality that the person who had once promised me forever had chosen someone else.

I heard she and her boyfriend were becoming estranged. He couldn’t treat her like I did. He could never love her like I did. When you wake up next to him in the middle of the night, with your head in your hands, you’re nothing more than his wife. And when you think about me, all of those years ago, you’re standing face to face with ‘I told you so.’

I told her so.
