One thing that always bothered me as a kid, and still bothers me, is it honestly makes so little sense Steph didn't rank super high on the scale of Martial Artists after receiving the Robin training, if it's so amazing. Considering what she could do while untrained, the experience she had, it's baffling that no one ever considered her a prodigy, or that she wasn't at least notably more skilled than say, Tim was, when she started out as Robin.
Like, Steph was in the field and knocking out grown men twice her size with zero training. It was not even mentioned that she took martial arts classes or anything to explain how she can do this, just gymnastics and softball. And both were high school gymnastics, high school softball, not fancy expensive classes??? Even Babs, in Batgirl Y1 had the advantage of having taken martial arts classes and presumably a lot more since her goal was to be in the FBI.
Meanwhile Steph like. She's jumping off rooftops and surfing trains and taking down bad guys with nothing. Tim's gone through extensive Batman training and trained with Lady Shiva and all this stuff, and obviously she's not as good as him and needs him to watch her back at times, but she can keep up with him, and even saves him or get the jump on him quite a few times, and that's incredible when you think about it. Tim gave her gadgets and instructions in the field, but it's never shown that he taught her any moves.
There's even a panel where Batman notes Stephanie almost snuck up on him and "not many people can do that" when again, no training, no martial arts classes, this is way before he agreed to give her any help at all-- and then for some reason, after noting this girl with no training is more talented than most people he knows, just keeps telling her she's not good enough and should go home.
That's a ridiculous level of raw talent, and it's honestly so bizarre nobody in the Batfamily ever noted that and kept telling her to go home. When she does get training, it's very sporadic, it is not clear how much Batman or Black Canary trained her the first time, he disappeared on her and then fired her as soon as he came back, and we never saw her get trained on screen by Dinah (the only person who ever acknowledged she had talent). She sparred with Cass, but Cass never taught her anything. Despite all this, she was noticeably getting way better during the era.
But when she received the six month Robin training that's supposed to make them so strong or whatever...how did that not result in her being a prodigy? She's the only Robin who was an experienced superhero before she took on the mantle?
Bruce literally tells her "Tim did this better" when he was training her about something, which makes no sense considering she came into being Robin with way more skills and experience and martial arts prowess??? When she was surviving on her own and fighting villains before that? When she could nearly sneak up on Bruce even before that?
You could claim she's a "bad student" or whatever, but she was a clearly very good at taking her gymnastic coach's instructions, enough to become a genius at it, so that doesn't really hold water.
The only explanation that would make any sense would be that Bruce taught her badly on purpose. which. unfortunately wouldn't be too far out of character from how he treated her in that era. (And that she apparently improved a lot under Babs tutelage as Batgirl but not his. So. Not a good look for him)
I mean the real answer for why all this makes no sense is DCs misogyny ofc. But it’s pretty wild how there’s no justification for this in universe.

tss / sander sides dlamp heros/vigilante (im such a ho for my favorites, yes roman is the vigilante and the odd one out. always gotta make him the speical main character🤍)
World Buliding
In a world where people evolved into manifesting powers at the age of six, a unspoken hierarchy formed based off of how powerful and how useful someones power is. From the people who were dumped out like trash and put on the streets due to their weak power, to people who rised to great glory because of their new gift. People started popping up using their powers to harm others, the rest of the population named them as "villains" Jobs started to shift and change, now you needed a certain type of power like super strengh or telekinesis to work construction. More research is being done to explain all the questions that comes with humans gaining super human abilities. More testing is being conducted. Remember the bottom tier the hierarchy made? The people who were kicked down and onto the streets? Well, some people with great power slip through the cracks and get knocked down too.
Thats where GEAR came into play. GEAR is a company who stepped up to answer everybody's questions when the first generation's powers started manifesting themselves over hundred years ago. GEAR had answers, all backed up with scientific sources, though no one asked how they conducted those sources. GEAR kept people sane in a time of confusion. So, it wasn't a surprise when they announced that they were going to be sponsoring people with strong powers as "heroes" a couple generations later, the whole world celebrated. They even gave ex villains second chances, and rumors of them taking in kids from the slumps to help them hon their powers in a safe environment spread soon after they started up. Instead of being called a company, they became more like an agency.
Characters
dlam all being top heroes, in a poly relationship unknown to the public, all becoming heroes for different reasons and in different ways. (janus and virgil having been seen as "bad" or in janus's case, being a real and true villain in the eyes of all heroes; before both got sponsored by GEAR which turned the publics favor of them over.)
They are usually called the best hero group GEAR has ever made.
(Powers not exactly decided yet, but all of them correspond to what they represent in Sander Sides in some way!)
Roman and Remus's mother was taken from her home in a low income neighborhood when she was a teen. Remember how GEAR thinks some powerful people can accidentally slip through the cracks and end up where they shouldn't be? Their mother was one of those people, and while to the press sponsoring her was a noble deed ("GEAR takes in another homeless kid, and sponsors her training and education! Sources say she'll become one of the best heroes the world has ever had." - a news headline shortly after GEAR's official announcement.) In actuality, she was merely stripped away from her home because of a variable she can't control. Nothing noble about that.
She became a hero nonetheless, not by her own choice but over the years she learned to accept her life. She was helping people, saving them when GEAR told her too, leaving them to die when they called her back.
Then, she became pregnant. And yet again, it wasn't her choice. Again, she quickly learned to love her babies. A set of twins, Roman and Remus. She loved them as long as she lived. But that doesn't stop them from experiencing what she had to go through, training, testing, being experimented with and so on. Both we're given shots of a new experimental drug at the age of 5, to test if this drug could influence their power levels in anyway or how they manifest. Could their powers manifest faster? Stronger? Could they become easier to predict what powers they might have? Or become easier to control when they first appear?
Fast foward a year later, Remus manifests his power before Roman. And its powerful. He can make others worse thoughts, their fears, ghosts of their past even, physically appear. He can make the worse things he thinks of appear as well. Its a game changing power, one that people are scared of but can't look away from. People wonder if its so powerful because of the drug, and they give him more. It only strengthens his power, and influences his emotions. Remus becomes unstable; the more powerful he gets the more intrusive and wrong his thoughts get. He starts fighting the drugs, he stops listening to the GEAR agents that try to control him. By the age of 10, Remus does something he's been wanting to do for a long time and has been holding back from actually acting on it; Remus takes Roman and escapes.
Their mother died by the time they manifest their powers. Roman has watched Remus spiral with each new drug dosing, it only makes them stick together more. Roman as had the exact opposite treatment Remus had.
Roman never manifested a power. At first, agents thought he was simply a late bloomer or it was some side affect of the drug. By the time Roman turned 7, they had long given up on him. Not manifesting a power was not acceptable. It was something that hasn't been recorded since powers first started manifesting 100 years ago. Something GEAR was too embarssed to admit to the public. So, Roman was sunned out of the public and private eye. He basically didn't exist. His records we're wiped out, no one talked to him besides maybe the occasional order. Only people who treated him like he was real was his mother and Remus. Then mom died, and Remus spiraled, and spiraled and spiraled. One night Remus picked him up, put a hand over his mouth, blindfolding him and saying "be quiet". All Roman heard was explosions and screams. The burning hot air of the explosions and fires around him bit at his skin, the boiling air made him not want to breathe. The next thing he knows, Remus takes the blindfold off and they are out side. The biting fire is replaced with the cool ocean breeze and Roman can breathe, actually breathe for the first time in his life.
They stick together until theyre young adults, even when they start to take different paths.
Remus, too damaged and influenced by all that GEAR put him through became a "villian". But Roman could always see the good in his brothers "villianess rampages". He only ever struck out at GEAR, more so playing, taunting, and tormenting them instead of actually hurting anyone. He was their prize possession that got away from that. The one who goes against him. Roman always made sure that his brother could hide out at his apartment if he needed too.
Roman on the other hand became a "vigilante". He protected the kids in his neighborhood and stepped up when he thought was right. Even if that meant fighting bad people who threatened his little world of safety. He didn't hide his identity much at all, he had no records for authorities to connect him back too. He did keep a safe distance anyways just so no one could confidently connect him back to Remus or their time in GEAR. And besides, more people were curious on what his power was than his identity, to the public, he never used his power because he never needed too. No one even entertained the idea of him not having a power to use.
Roman and Remus play out the roles of nemeses in public. Crazy villian vs stoic vigilante; one who wants the world to burn and one who just wants to fight for whats right even if that goes against higher authorities. Some times they don't even have to play it out, and they end up actually fighting in public over conflicting views or goals. (Remus wanting to destroy GEAR for all their pain and tormenting they went through the first ten years of their life. All the hurt their mother had to suffer. And Roman fighting back, saying GEAR does as much good as much as they do bad. And destroying the biggest hero company will only hurt the world more because thats just taking away the biggest heroes.) But Romans apartment is always a safe place, where all titles or goals are dropped and they are just brothers.
I have tonsss of scene ideas for this au ( already jumping between some and writing what comes to mind) but also just as much plot holes to fill in lmao. I just really needed to get this au written down to look back on. Might be a fic soon ;)
