Why Did God Create Atheists?

There is a famous story told in Chassidic literature that addresses this very question. The Master teaches the student that God created everything in the world to be appreciated, since everything is here to teach us a lesson. 

One clever student asks “What lesson can we learn from atheists? Why did God create them?”

The Master responds “God created atheists to teach us the most important lesson of them all — the lesson of true compassion. You see, when an atheist performs and act of charity, visits someone who is sick, helps someone in need, and cares for the world, he is not doing so because of some religious teaching. He does not believe that god commanded him to perform this act. In fact, he does not believe in God at all, so his acts are based on an inner sense of morality. And look at the kindness he can bestow upon others simply because he feels it to be right.”

“This means,” the Master continued “that when someone reaches out to you for help, you should never say ‘I pray that God will help you.’ Instead for the moment, you should become an atheist, imagine that there is no God who can help, and say ‘I will help you.’”

so i have trouble becoming fluent in another language (as many of us probably experience), but i found this app called HelloTalk where you can talk to native speakers! i know there are other apps like this but this one is THE BEST. you can have many different conversations with others (i’m talking to 10 people on the app rn). it’s so useful since it shows the correct grammar in the chat. check out this conversation i’ve been having with someone:

also you can send audio clips to practice speaking so it’s not just about reading/writing. i’m just so happy i get to use this quality app that helps me so much before i study abroad in france. definitely read more reviews and check it out here if you wanna practice another language!

You are sat, watching Queenie and Jacob slowly dance on the dance floor. A slow song is playing, and they are swaying together to the beat, looking as cute as ever. Other couples join them on the floor, including Newt and Tina.

They aren’t dating, yet it really seems like they are with all of the time they spend together. You and Newt have known each other for such a long time, yet your relationship with him hasn’t gotten any farther than a friendship. You wanted more, you wanted to be able to call him yours and show him how much you could love him. However, all of those dreams diminished once Tina came by. 

Tina is a smart, confident young woman who knows how to handle herself well. She even has an amazing job, serving as an auror at MACUSA. She is more than you could ever be. Her and Newt had hit it off so well, you’re surprised Newt hasn’t asked her to be his girlfriend yet. They spend so much time together, in Newt’s suitcase, in the Goldstein’s apartment, you rarely ever saw them apart. It hurts so much, to know that the love of your life is possibly falling for another woman. But what can you do? You couldn’t hate Tina, she’s done nothing to hurt you. You couldn’t blame Newt for being so close to her either, who wouldn’t want to be friends with her?

So, you just sat where you were, surveying the wedding from afar as Tina and Newt sway to the gentle beat of a slow song. Jacob is now dancing with his mom, while Queenie is dancing with her dad. 

There is no reason to complain tonight. Tonight is for Jacob and Queenie, the new, adorable married couple. Nothing should ruin this moment for them. Not even your feelings. You just need a... breather. Maybe some time away after being around so many people for a whole afternoon. 

You stand up from your table and grab your coat and bag. Little did you know, Newt was watching you from afar, keeping a close eye on you to see if you are ok. You haven’t been yourself for the whole afternoon, acting more shy and talking less than usual. 

As you stand up from the table, Newt excuses himself from Tina and begins to walk towards you.

You make it out into the courtyard and sit down on a nearby bench. Surrounding you are all types of flowers, some the color of the sky, others colored with an illustrious red, and some flowers are even adorned with a deep velvet color and bright yellow spots. Different aromas surround you and overwhelm your conscious, calming you into a state of relaxation and tranquility. It is bliss, and you realize it’s what you needed. What your body craves. 

From a distance you can hear footsteps. At first they were light and far away, and soon enough they are close and trampling all over your peace and tranquility. The soft crunches of oncoming footsteps sounds like a giant lumbering towards you in your mind. 

“Y/N? How’re you feeling?”

You dreaded to hear that voice, and the peace you felt before begins to slowly fade away.  

A sigh escapes your lips,”Fine, Newt. How’re you?” You refuse to look towards him, trying your best to grapple onto the last bit of tranquility in your body. 

“I’m doing ok, thanks. Look, I’ve been meaning to ask you about something.”

Your heart began to race. Never mind the fact that you had just seen Tina and Newt slow dancing on the dance floor. Or the fact that Newt hasn’t been spending much time with you lately, or that Newt has been working with Tina in the suitcase more than he has been with you. You still have a sliver of hope. And while you wanted to think rationally about the situation at hand, that sliver of hope has always been there, stabbing and wounding your heart. 

Maybe he will ask the question this time. 

Maybe he sees how much I love him, and maybe, just maybe, he loves me just as much. 

Your thoughts are interrupted when you hear a soft thud come from the right of you. Newt had sat down next to you and is staring at you intently.

“I want to ask Tina to be mine.”

“Oh.”

Oh.

The sliver of hope that had been lodged into your heart had just been ripped out, leaving a deep and bleeding wound behind it.

Newt’s eyebrows furrow and his eyes fill with worry. “Oh?”

“Yea, oh.” You stand up and dust your dress off. Disappointment is all you can feel.

“Is everything all right?”

“I’m just unbelievably tired. I need to go.” Your eyes are blank and your voice is devoid of any emotion. After all, it was time to go.

Before Newt can respond, you apparate back to Tina and Queenie’s apartment. 

The tears start to roll down your face when you begin to pack up your suitcase.

After all, it was time to go.
