ALSO It genuinely sucks how mary is sidelined so much as a character or reduced to a love interest or the obliviated mary headcanon. like, the headcanon itself isn't even inherently bad or boring except for when it doesn't really go anywhere or say anything about her character because people don't really know what to do with it. so we leave it at ‘just another angsty thing that happened in canon' because we love to play into the tragedy trope and since mary isn't as popular it never truly gets developed or made into anything concrete except for projecting this vague aestheticised idea of memory loss.

i love the concept of dorlily rivals to lovers in one very specific way, and it's that lily isn't really that competitive with anyone but herself. she wants to do well in school, but she's not trying to push anyway down. she doesn't want to beat out the rest of the class.

meanwhile i think dorcas is the complete opposite, she's looking to be the best, and she takes anyone else doing well as a threat. so she's competitive, and she's looking to 'win' against lily when it comes to marks, being head girl, and so on.

thus it's a little one-sided, all determination and ice-cold threats on dorcas side, while lily has a bemused enjoyment on her own, complimenting her and wishing her well before exams, only making dorcas more upset that she's not bothered.

70s marauders era girls fashion:

the marauders era begins in the early seventies, with the gang being only eleven years old, so i think it's interesting to think about what styles they'd wear, and how their fashion would change as they grow up, from eleven onwards.

Lily Evans

in 1971, when starting off at hogwarts, lily's fashion would be young, with outfits probably bought by her parents. because of this i don't think she'd be all out in the hippie fashions of the time (lasting from the late 60s to early 70s), but i do think she'd have homages to that style. her hair would be long, with a heavy fringe in the front. i think she'd wear maxi skirts and flared jeans.

into the mid-seventies, Lily would dip her toes into teenagedom, and at the same time the hippie style was going out of fashion, replaced by casual looks which included sweaters and jeans. during this time, i think lily would be mostly dressing in cardigans, layered blouses and tunic dresses with pants underneath.

by the late seventies, and her late teen years, flared jeans were mostly out of style, and fashion had grown yet more casual. lily would be wearing vests, and looser satin pants, along with still wearing sweaters and cardigans.

Marlene McKinnon

unlike lily, i think marlene wouldn't be that engaged with any hippie fashion. in the early 70s, while still under the watch of her parents, she would dress in what her mother put her in, mostly more traditional outfits. though she'd probably argue her way into a pair of trousers, she'd have button ups with sweaters over them and her hair would be long, though probably tangled.

as she gets older, she would begin buying her own clothing, and probably end up wearing a lot of menswear, owning men's jeans and wearing button-ups and plaid shirts, along with eventually cutting her hair off into the styles men would be wearing at the time, winged with a heavy fringe in the front, by the mid-seventies she would be wearing t-shirts

Mary Macdonald

during the early 70s, mary would probably wear her hair in an afro, something which had come into popularity after years of it being the norm to chemically straighten afro-textured hair. even at eleven she would be on trend, wearing lots of natural wooden and feather jewelry and maxi skirts, along with prairie dresses. by the mid-seventies, she would have changed up her style to fit with the times, wearing low-rise jeans along with tube tops and crop tops. she would own a pair of Birkenstocks.

in the late 70s, she would continue to wear tube and crop tops, the colors growing more muted to fit the new style, along with wearing tighter fitted t-shirts. her pants would get slimmer, less flared. strapless tops would be more in fashion, and she'd begin to wear those too.

unpopular dorcas meadowes, who has a thorny unpleasantness which leads most of the boys at hogwarts to dislike her. She'd attractive, but she's a bitch. so they insult her and tease her for being cold and prudish because she doesn't go along with jokes or flirting. dorcas meadowes who gets called a lesbian from a young age due to her dismissiveness. intimidating, unwavering, with a sharp cruelty she learns to wield while in Slytherin.

most of Slytherin hates her, hell most of the school hates her, and she's just trying to get out of there alive.

remus lupin is a people pleaser. he's a switch first and foremost because he's just gonna do whatever his partner wants. he's overcompensating for feeling like he's cursed the other person to a lifetime with a werewolf, to the point where it might be a little unhealthy just how far he's willing to leave his comfort zone. praise kink? likely. bratty? imo absolutely not.

chronic lip chewer lily evans. she chews her lip when she's lost in thought, when she's stressed, when she's working really hard on her schoolwork. she's always got a raw imprint of her teeth on her bottom lip, a bit of skin that never quiet heals.

neither marlene or dorcas know how to properly communicate about their relationship for the longest time. dorcas refuses to admit it's happening, marlene doesn't even stop to question what she's feeling, and hate-fucking slowly turns into spending the night, dates they don't call dates. they're in a relationship neither discuss for months before finally something happens, some stumble, some moment of jealousy, and everything explodes out in a giant fight.

i looove smart mary macdonald. not smart in a bookish way, not someone who studies a lot, but analytical, sharp, and charismatic. the kind of person who keeps her cards close to her chest, who thinks before she speaks, always aware of how she's perceived.

she comes off as bubbly and fun-loving because that's how she wants to be seen, and she never lets anyone see what's underneath.
