Mermaid Zodiac: Aries
Little late in posting this one. This is the Aries mermaid for my zodiac series. After doing some research I found that Aries is the golden fleeced ram with wings which I thought would be perfect for this image. The fleece isn't exactly golden but I decided to instead give a slight golden tone to the mermaid's tail and chest plate. I hope you enjoy this piece and please feel free to share this with any Aries in your life:) If you'd like to see the wip and sketches I explored for this illustration check out my Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/yasu.art.studio/

It's the koi Pisces mermaid. Happy Birthday to all the Pisces! When I started this piece, I knew I wanted it to be a koi mermaid with koi swimming around her but it was actually very difficult for me decide on a pose. I was really set on drawing her from the back at first, with her looking over her shoulder but I just couldn't get it to look right. After abandoning that and exploring some other poses from the front I landed on this one. The next trick was getting her eyes to look like she was looking at the koi. You'd think it's easy but it's not. I'm still not sure I got it right. As with my past zodiac pieces I've added the constellation in the background and added the Pisces birthstone aquamarine in her earring. I hope you enjoy:) You can see more of my art and WIPs on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/yasu.art.studio/ This print is available on my print store at: https://www.inprnt.com/gallery/yasuartstudio/mermaid-zodiac-pisces/

Mermaid Zodiac Series: Aquarius
Happy birthday to all Aquarians!! This piece went through many variations before I landed on this pose. You can see my exploration fo poses on my Instagram account. In the background I've added the Aquarian constellation. one of the stars is shining where the water is coming out of the vase:) The birthstone, Amethyst, is featured on the mermaids necklace. I tried giving her earrings but it didn't look as good, I'm terrible at drawing jewelry:P Thank you for checking out my artwork. The Siren’s Song
Mermay sketch 14 colored  I was really dragging my feet when it came to coloring this piece as the original sketch was a little boring…so I decided to change things up a little. Add a sunset and splashing waves and you’ve got my attention. The biggest challenge for me was balancing the sunset behind the mermaid and not loosing her completely to the backlight. I added some cool tones to the mermaid as the opposite side of the sky would still hold some blue tints and would help light her figure. Having a Christian Lassen art book nearby for reference was a huge help as he paints some amazing sunsets and crashing waves. I hope you enjoy To see more of my artwork check out my Insta page at:

Mermaid Zodiac Series: Capricorn
So excited about this new personal project I'm starting, it's the Mermaid Zodiac Series. Every month I'll share a new zodiac sign illustrated with one of my favorite subjects - mermaids. As you can tell this is the constellation Capricorn, the Sea-Goat. I added the birthstone (garnet) to the armor and the stones also double as stars for the constellation. I really enjoyed working on this piece and I can't wait to share the next sun signs with you. Please share this with the Capricorns in your life:) If you'd like to support my work you can buy a print or a art card at:https://www.inprnt.com/gallery/yasuartstudio/ Or you can also support me by following my Instagram page here: https://www.instagram.com/yasu.art.studio/

Wow it's already 2020! Happy New Years everyone. This was finished in 2019 but didn't get around to posting it here. This is based on a sketch I created for the 2019 mermay challenge and I colored it right before Christmas! I hope you enjoy it! Adding the moon and clouds was a lot of fun as most of my pieces are under water. Stay tuned for more of my mermaid drawings this year! Colored Version of a sketch I created for day 12 of the Mermay challenge. I know that this picture brings up the question of how mermaids have babies, and my answer to that is -- I have no idea!! My mind gets boggled when I try to think about the technicalities of a mermaid giving birth or laying eggs so I try not to think about it:) I hope you enjoy the picture though:)

Mermay Day 11 Colored: Stretch
I was hoping to have all my mermay sketches colored by the end of the year but it looks like that won't be happening. Hopefully they'll all be done by next May though:) I've reached day 11 and if you've seen the original sketch you'll know that I changed her pose and the background a bit. What works for a sketch doesn't always work when it's colored so I had to make a few adjustments and I'm quite happy with how it turned out. Next up is the Mother's Day illustration:) Other than coloring my Mermay sketches I'm also working on a new series of illustrations that I'll reveal in January so stay tuned. Here is day 10 of my mermay sketches colored. Really not sure if I can finish all of these before next mayXD. One thing that speeds up my painting is having the background limited to a circle. It definitely saves time and gives it a kind of graphic element. You can see more of my art and WIPs on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/yasu.art.studio/

I'm a little slow at updating my tumblr account. This was finished just about a month ago based on a sketch I created for Mermay day 9. The prompt word was Baguette. My original piece had her sitting on a floating baguette and it just didn't work for me so I started fresh and ended up with this. I had a lot of fun working on this piece and I even made a youtube video of my work process where I share some tips on how I create my illustrations. If you're interested please check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-s3m191Ww6g&t=7s Instagram link: -> https://www.instagram.com/yasu.art.studio/

Mermay Day 8 Colored: Prompt word Squid
This was such a challenging piece to work on! I redrew it 3 times before I landed on this piece. My original concept was to have her attacking a submarine but I couldn't get it to work the first 3 times so I decided to change it up. It's clash of the sea monsters:)   For this piece I really wanted to focus on her muscles and strength and also a more painterly feel.  I hope you enjoy it. Mermaid Pool Party 🎉 ! This was also based on a sketch I created for Mermay. My first attempt was to color over the sketch but it didn’t look quite right to me, so I completely redrew the piece from scratch.
Swipe right to see my first colored attempt and the original sketch and let me know which one you like more:)

Who likes fish Tacos?!?! XD This illustration is based on the Taco Tuesday sketch I created for Mermay. I changed quite a few things. I think I get bored of drawing the same thing and that's why I change things up all the time. You can see more of my art and WIPs on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/yasu.art.studio/

Cinco de Mayo Mermaid: Mermay challenge day 5
This is based on a sketch created for Day 5 of the Mermay Challenge. I liked my original sketch but the fore shortening of the arm wasn't quite right so I though I might as well change the whole thing. For the fish, I painted 2-3 variations of each fish (side view, back view etc) and then copy/pasted them. So thankful for modern technology! May the 4th Mermaid
Continuing on with posting my colored versions of my Mermay sketches, here's May the 4th Colored. I've never done a space illustration before so this what a lot of fun and who doesn't love Star Wars!? I looked at a lot of star wars posters to help get the creative juices flowing for this piece, I hope you enjoy. You can see more of my art on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/yasu.art.studio/

Rockabilly: Mermay Day 3 Colored
Slowly working through all my mermay sketches and taking them to full color. I was really inspired by the old pinup art styles for this piece. At one point I thought of making the background blue and make it look like she was really underwater but it kind of detracted from the pinup style so I went with the white background with silhouettes of fish in the back. If you like pinup art then you're probably already familiar with Gil Elvgren, he's one of my favorite pinup artists and referencing his artwork really helped me with this piece. He's a true master and if you're not familiar with his artwork definitely look him up. You can see more of my art on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/yasu.art.studio/

Here's the colored version of my Mermay rascal sketch. Looking at it she doesn't really look like a rascal...in the first version of this colored illustration the mermaid was sneaking up on a diver who was taking pictures of fish. But my wife told me that it was too creepy and that she looked like a stalker. So as that was not the vibe I was going for I changed the diver to some dolphins. You can see some of my work in progress images along with the diver image I talked about on my facebook page : www.facebook.com/Yasu-Art-Stud… Let me know if you'd liked to have seen her sneaking up on a diver instead
