Noises

Noises are normal.

From the cicada’s chirps, the blowing of horns of passing vehicles and the howls of stray dogs.The eerie but familiar choir outside the safety of a home. Normal, mundane noises. Comes with the territory, get used to them.

Mother nature apparently can’t shut up at night. 

She sings to the people by comforting them with background noises. Because silence is terrifying. Sleeping at night is easier because no one is ever alone.

Hear that? That’s an owl.

Oh, do you hear that as well? That’s a branch scraping against the window.

Is that not a branch? No, it’s nails. There’s a slow and rhythmic tapping on the window. Again.

A boy looks at his window, annoyed and mutters, ‘ What?’ He’s used to this. It happens every single night but every time he opens the glass window. No one is there. On his desk sat a sketchbook, figures of people and buildings litter the page. 

He closes the book and stretches. Slumping over a desk for hours is not a good thing for his developing body. The boy jumps on his bed and sighs. After a few seconds he was already feeling sleeps embrace when-

Knock

He’s taken out of his doze and directs his attention to the window. A large rectangle glass beside his desk. A miniscule crack is located in the middle of it. Irritated, the by stands up and pushes the window open.

Nothing. 

He growls and closes it. Took his headphones from a drawer and decides to just drown it out with music. He jumps into bed and plays his favourite tunes. The boy falls asleep with dreams filled with rhythm.

Outside his window, in another world. In a pocket unseen from the naked eye. 

A figure stares at a large rectangle glass. Everything else around him is black with distant stars all around. Time is unknown. All this figure sees is this one single room.
