The entire universe is made up of five natural elements popularly known as ‘Panchmahabhoota’. They are Fire (Agni), Air (Vaayu), Space (Aakash), Earth (Prithvi), and Water (Jal). Do you know that these elements are present in our bodies also? And each of our five fingers represents one natural element. Whenever there is an imbalance between these five elements in our body, we tend to fall sick. In ayurveda, there are different hand gestures (hast mudras) formed by joining the fingers in various manners. Each gesture is beneficial in its own way. In Ayurveda, they are considered a healing modality. Click on the link to know what these gestures are and how you can benefit from them.

Breathing exercises are popularly known as Pranayama. Just as the word yoga is one of wide import, so is the Pranayama. Prana means breath, respiration, life, vitality, wind, energy, or strength. Ayama means length, expansion, stretching, or restraint. Pranayama thus connotes the extension of breath and its control.
Why Breathing Exercises are important?
Just do this simple experiment. All you have to do is to observe your breathing for a whole day, essentially when your mood changes. You will notice that when you are angry, anxious, feared, or worried you breathe faster. On the contrary, you breathe slowly whenever you are happy, joyous, satisfied, or even when you are at rest. The experiment concludes that our emotions control the pace of our breathing. Likewise, our pace of breathing can control our emotions. When we get control over emotions, we get control over our minds and thus, control over our life. Breathing exercises also play a significant role in your spiritual journey.

If you are someone who’s into sports or any kind of physical activity like a gym workout, you would be familiar with the importance of warm-up sessions. A warm-up is very much essential for a body to function optimally without causing much damage to it.
Like sports or workouts, warming up the body before the yoga session is also essential. In yogic terms, the warm-up exercises are termed ‘Sukshma Vyayama’. Sukshma translates to micro and Vyayama to exercises. The reason they are called micro is that they stimulate each and every part of the body. They help stimulate blood flow through various body parts and lubricate the joints by removing the air bubbles formed in the joints. And voila, you are ready to rock your workout.

When you practice yoga, you do a lot of stuff like asanas, breathing exercises, and meditation. For many of these kriyas, you need to sit down. Yogic scriptures also recommend a specific sitting posture for a particular asana or kriya. When you use the recommended posture, the benefits of that kriya get multiplied. However, not everyone is comfortable in all these postures. Sometimes, your physical condition does not allow you to sit in that posture. In that case, you are allowed to choose the posture that is comfortable for you. Here are some of the sitting postures from which you can choose for yourself and practice it. These sitting postures, even when practiced individually (not combined with any asana or kriya) have their benefits.

Many scriptures mention that ‘Yoga’ is not just about performing asanas, it is a way of living life. Asanas are just an acrobatic part of it. The main purpose of yoga is liberation, or achieving spiritual heights. To reach the spiritual height, you must follow all seven steps which are below it. All these eight steps combined are called Ashtanga Yoga.
Ashtanga Yoga is about how you should live your life. You may call them ‘Yoga Etiquette’. Following etiquette or inculcating good habits has never harmed anyone. In fact, once you start eating right, sleeping right, and meditating, your mind becomes clear and your intelligence sharper. To get the maximum out of yoga, you need to follow Ashtanga Yoga. Ashtanga Yoga purifies and prepares the mind and the body for meditation. Having your body and mind in their most natural form can give you the best experience when you meditate.
Click on the link below to know what these eight steps are and how one can benefit from them.

The word ‘Yoga’ has so much importance in Indian History and culture. Yoga is a timeless pragmatic science that evolved over thousands of years dealing with a human's physical, moral, mental, and spiritual well-being.
However, Yoga is not for him who gorges too much, nor for him who starves himself. It is not for him who sleeps too much, nor for him who stays awake. By moderation in eating and resting, by regulation in working, and by concordance in sleeping and waking, Yoga destroys all pain and sorrow. The practice of Yoga induces a primary sense of measure and proportion. It also brings moderation in your eating and sleeping habits. In short, Yoga is a way to transform your life.
