God, being Will Treaty in his 40s or whatever age he and Alyss get to pre Royal Ranger and. Just the kind of magic of you made it in a way that tiny Will in the ward would never have believed. A boy who never felt at home, who lived like he had a bomb waiting to go off in the Choosing and not being a knight, and now you're a man and you're so so so loved. You have friends across continents. You're so loved that your best friend all but ends the war you father died in, for you and his future wife. Enters single combat expecting to die, specifically for both of you.

Also the magic of Rangers in the books are almost outside of the class issues in a lot of the rest of it - very privileged but deeply connected to the common people around them, and based on the land. Will being a hero directly to the kind of people his parents were, despite never having met them. Will who knows how to cook, how to live rough, who appreciates a local inn and pint, who can talk about winter prep with the farmers.

And for a boy who thought he was never home, having Redmont fief love him. Welcome in the town and in the castle, with a wife he loves and a father a short ride away.

Just so y’all know: I can’t speak for every other fic author but I can say that I remember when people leave me kind comments. I recognize your urls and/or usernames on AO3. I remember you and sometimes in writing my fics I think to myself, “Oh, I hope this person sees this because they liked x in this other fic I did.”

Not only that—I go back and reread comments when I’m feeling low. I look at tags and reblogs and asks and wish I could hold them in my hand like a note from a friend on an old, torn piece of notebook paper.

”I just don’t like Maddie idk why I just don’t she’s x negative trait” I swear to god this is the misogyny talking.

I heard this so many times a couple years ago and even while looking up stuff now for trr, and I lowkey expected horrors when I read this book. I expected her to be downright stupid and hateful and nasty with the way you guys off and even ON tumblr talked about her.

I’m not often one of those “you hate this female character because of misogyny.” types of people bc it makes some people sound kinda terfy, but this time it really feels like it.

“She’s a selfish brat” she’s 15 years old and changed her ways not even halfway through the book. She’s actually caring and inquisitive and bold. Even at the start she isn’t actually selfish- she never was.

“She’s obnoxious and a smartass.” So you want her to shut up? You want girls to shut up and just obey the men around them? Girls can’t be sarcastic and even defiant? Is that just for the men in the book, who are CONSTANTLY sarcastic and obnoxious and defiant? Is it only cool when HALT is a smartass? When HE is defiant to authority? Good god.

“I just only like Will and Halt” do you even HEAR yourself?

Good god she doesn’t have to be your favorite but I heard WAY too many tangents about how bad of a character she is, to read the book and actually find a young female character finding her way in this men’s world and ALSO unlearning her selfish ways and learning to be caring but also dauntless. But she is also able to be realistic enough to believe she’s only fifteen years old.

She is literally written as a realistic fifteen year old girl under patriarchy, yet one who is evidently skilled and powerful and willful. She’s witty but still clearly young, she’s brave but still grappling with not being grown up. She hunts food for people she cares about and without a second thought gave away a beautiful pelt to a family in need. Maddie achieved far more in her first book than Will even did and STILL that wasn’t enough to not be called boring and annoying compared to him. He did what, like killed some creatures and a half a boar, kinda half saved Halt with the help of that knight guy? Okay Maddie infiltrated several towns information networks (the children) successfully, killed several child abductors ALONE and saved ten children nearly alone and saved Will’s life and got stabbed through the thigh with a spear. And she’s a princess?!?

Oh my god stop it already I’m crying now 😭😭😭

Very recent headcanon that when Halt was a kid whenever he was happy and would show it the people around him had to make a big deal out of it. They'd be like "wow Halt can smile? Incredible" and "Are you happy for once? Are you drunk?" They would just be so sarcastic and overreact about it that it made him feel bad so he ended up not really showing when he felt happy to avoid all that. Kinda like how when parents make a big deal when you leave your room "for the first time" and then it makes you never want to come out of your room again.

It kinda stayed with him so even as an adult he still doesn't show when he's happy or enjoying something. Around strangers it makes sense, but even when he's around people he knows and trusts and knows they won't judge him or anything, like Crowley and Pauline, it still took a while for him to be open with them.

After Caitlyn had Sean she moved away from Hibernia because she wanted to give him a normal life away from the castle and let him have fun growing up, and she wanted a change of scenery and also she didn't fully trust Ferris since she knew what happened with Halt so she moved. Where did she move? Araluen of course. She found Half again they had a cool reunion, she had a bit of a mind fuck finding out that he wasn't dead and she moved into Remont at the village so she could stay close to him.

Now Sean gets to grow up with his much better uncle and Halt gets to have experiences with little kid Sean and teach him swears and shit like that. I just think it would be so cute if Halt and Sean actually got actual nephew-uncle time. And sometimes Sean would need a babysitter so if Halt actually had time he would do it and sometimes Sean had to stay the night and in classic little kid fashion he would get scared especially being away from home and want to sleep with Halt in his bed.

I just need Halt to have an actual little kid in his life that he can be real sweet with because I know he would

Also with Caitlyn around it would make her death ten times harder for him

Once the rangers start figuring out that Crowley’s the sender, they all send presents in return. After he passes, on his birthday, each of them lays a bouquet of wildflowers on his grave.

Crowley keeps track of the birthdays of each member of the Corps and always anonymously sends them a little surprise package or letter with his own poem or song, because he knows that once you become ranger, your life can become lonely except for Gatherings. Each ranger figures out who's the sender sooner or later.

Old Bob is actually a necromancer and the Ranger horses are reincarnated Rangers who agreed to continue working for the Corps even after their deaths. Their consciousness gets put into new horses as the need arises, hence why the horses are so oddly intelligent and their personality seems to stay so consistent even when Rangers get new horses
