“Believe that you can make a difference; in fact, you do with every single choice you make. Your money is your power and each time you spend it, it's a vote for something, so make it count. Introduction to Serial Killers
A serial killer is an individual who murders victims over a certain period of time, typically between gaps. Some kidnap/torture their victims before committing murder. It isn’t always clear why these people commit such horrible crimes, but some say severe antisocial tendencies are to blame. Serial killers often generate fascination with fear; their crimes tend to spread across media, gain fans who study their crimes, and, in some strange cases, fans who try to form relationships with these killers.
Understanding Serial Killers
Historians have argued whether serial killers have existed throughout all of history. In ancient and medieval times, these murders were thought to be the works of werewolves, witches, or monsters. When those who committed the crimes were caught, they were accused of (or even admitted to) committing these murders for “supernatural” purposes.
Jack the Ripper- an unidentified murderer in the 19th century- is often called the “first modern serial killer”. The term “serial killer” was popularized in the late 20th century, when murderers began to gain media attention and drew focus from law enforcement agencies. Most of the famous serial killers were active in the 20th and 21st centuries- coinciding both with the increased public interest in these stories, as well as a heightened understanding of what motivates killers, how they develop, and how their crimes can be prevented.
What defines a serial killer?
Someone who has murdered at least three people or more over a period of time with pauses in between. Some experts argue that killers must have a psychological motive- sexual gratification, for example.
What’s the difference between a serial killer and a mass murderer?
Both murder multiple people, but a serial killer takes breaks in between killings while a mass murderer kills a group of people in one time period. For example, a school shooting or a bombing.
Are there serial killers around the world?
Killers have been reported in most countries and on six continents. Western countries- including the U.S.- tend to have more killers than non-western countries. Experts believe this is because of increased media attention and better law enforcement efforts, rather than an increased prevalence of serial killers.
(Prevalence- the total number of individuals in a population who have a disease or health condition at a specific period, usually expressed as a percentage of the population.)
Are there different types of serial killers?
Killers are categorized by motivation. Visionary killers believe they are being “ordered” by a higher power. These killers may have schizophrenia or have experienced a psychotic break shortly before committing the crime. Mission-oriented serial killers consider it their “duty” to rid the world of certain people- sex workers, for example. Hedonistic killers take pleasure in killing, either sexual or thrill-based. Many of her killers are driven by the need for power/control.
Psychology of Serial Killers
Many criminal psychologists, law enforcement agencies, and the general public have long been interested in what possibly motivates serial killers. Another question that seems to be asked is whether or not killers could be suffering from severe mental illnesses that sever their contact with reality.
Plenty of serial killers did undergo some psychotic breaks that did trigger their crimes but, they have rarely been found legally insane. Killers appear to be extremely antisocial and tend to lack empathy, have no remorse, show no regard for laws or social norms, and have a strong desire to revenge themselves against individuals or society at large.
Are serial killers mentally ill?
Honestly, it depends. Some do exhibit symptoms of psychosis while others are diagnosed with severe bipolar disorder. However, very few are considered to be mentally ill enough to be declared legally insane. The majority show signs of psychopathy or sociopathy; they may meet the criteria for antisocial personality disorder.
Are all serial killer psychopaths?
Most demonstrate antisocial tendencies, which include a lack of empathy, a disregard for laws and the rights of others, and a lack of remorse. Many do meet the criteria for either psychopathy or sociopathy.

“If a person doesn’t think there is a God to be accountable to, then—then what's the point of trying to modify your behaviour to keep it within acceptable ranges? That's how I thought anyway. Who’s your favorite fictional serial killer?
Mine has to be between Chucky and Freddy Krueger. I grew up watching these.
When I was 4, my mother told me I would constantly watch Freddy. She had to take the dvds and give them away. 😂

A true fact. Learning about their past history and all the horrible things they’ve done is quite interesting. Of course, I like learning about the victims as well. I respect the families who have gone through the pain of losing their loved ones.
It’s not a horrible thing to be interested in learning about serial killers. It’s actually good to know. This way it’ll teach people to stray away from suspicious characters, don’t take a drink from someone you don’t know, don’t follow anyone home or get into a strangers car, plus more.
It also teaches people how serial killers act. You can never tell a persons true character until they show you but there are signs to look out for.
