I learned to ride my bike next to a hill.

I must have spent hours of my life painstakingly riding up it. When hills get steep enough, you kinda just have to stand up and struggle. It's really annoying, It was so so slow, and I was angry the whole time I was doing it.

After all, I wasn't a very sturdy kid- I broke my bones when I took a bad fall, and even small scrapes would scar. So every time I went up that hill, it hurt. It hurt a lot.

And looking back, I would have made it up twice as fast with half as much pain if I had just gotten off my bike and walked it up that stupid hill. But I never did. I mean, it felt like cheating, like I was chickening out of doing it 'the real way.' What if a car drove by? What if someone saw me? I'm not weak, I would tell myself. I've made it up this way before, why shouldn't I do it again?

I wonder why I was so opposed to making things easier for myself.

Did I not deserve to do something in a way that didn't hurt me? Did I think that making myself miserable would eventually make me happy? Was it just because I COULD do it, I HAD to?

I think a lot about the little girl on that bike- angry, aching, and upset.

It's okay to walk your bike, I think.
