Introducing Oblong Energy
Tumblr media
Why We want to achieve decarbonisation of the electricity grid so that it can sustainably deliver power to wherever it's needed, now and far into the future.
How We deliver energy demand-side solutions to provide flexibility to the electricity grid, enabling the stable connection of more renewable energy sources like solar and wind. What We use remote automated IoT technology to orchestrate the increase and decrease of controllable loads like fridges, air-conditioners and other devices, whenever the grid needs help maintaining grid security and reliability.

The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less
by
Barry Schwartz
My rating:
3 of 5 stars
Some good anecdotes and studies, with useful practical tips on how to decide (plus when to decide). However it summarised a lot of content from other books like Thinking Fast and Slow (Daniel Kahnemann) and Authentic Happiness by (Marty Seligman).
Schwartz mentions the concept of “hedonic lag”, which is the tendency for cultures to retain values that once made them great, but are no longer as relevant in creating satisfaction. A great example is USA’s individualism, which while useful in the past, may be putting undue stress on individuals who are now faced with unlimited choice and possibilities about almost every aspect of life.
This article written by a person familiar with both Japanese and American culture is quite insightful on this topic.

I am immensely grateful to work for a global company that embodies flexible working. I’ve just boarded my flight home after two and a half weeks abroad, using only three annual leave days. A company that takes care of its people gets more value and productivity out. Trust in an employee’s commitment breeds more of the same.

Three winters ago I was considering different career and study options; one of the untaken paths would have led to studying in Oxford. Today I took the chance to visit; it’s a beautiful college town and a glimpse of what could have been. It’s interesting to reflect on what our past selves thought about what would’ve made us happy.

Last week a friend took us on a seaside drive in her Mini Cooper, along the Basse-Normandie coastline. This area from Cherbourg to the Nez de Jobourg is so close to the south coast of England and the Channel Islands, on that clear day it felt like you could reach out over the waters and touch another place.

I look for three things in hiring people. The first is personal integrity, the second is intelligence, and the third is a high energy level. But, if you don’t have the first, the other two will kill you.
