KERAMIEKOS TO KYKEON

Keramiekos to Kykeon, is an original, plastic and performative creation, to mark the end of the group show Visions from the Underworld, organized by The Aprognostic Temple, as part of the European Capital of Culture Elefsina 2023, Mystery 177. Keramiekos to Kykeon is a tribute to the mysteries of ancient Greece. Much of it is inspired by the works of Edouard Schuré: Les Grands Initiées & Le Drame sacrée d'Eleusis.
The work consists of several parts:
1). A music workshop with the public.
2). Elements created in ceramics: instruments that pay homage to the aulos (an ancient Greek double-reed instrument), Pythagoras' cups, puzzle cups that test the moderation of their users and a large creation (kernos) bearing a sacred drink, the Kykeon.

3). A wooden ark, used to carry the ceramics and the elixir, which transforms into a display stand at the end of the procession. 4). Costumes and flags are sewn to mark the presence of otherness.

5). A procession around the historic site of the Eleusian Mysteries, passing by the sea where an offering to the gods is made then continuing to the temple.

6). The performance of music & song accompanies the procession and the installation of the display. At the end, we sing, we share the kykeon, we unveil the cube of mystery and the exhibition is over.
ΕΥΧΑΡΙΣΤΩ Sam & Dome

Jeden cały weekend koncertów i wydarzeń wokół Kiosku Keramiek w Sklepie Galeria Karowa.
McCloud Zicmuse (1973, Bruksela, BE) jest multidyscyplinarnym artystą pracującym pomiędzy subtelnymi liniami rzemiosła ludowego, występów muzycznych i sztuk pięknych. Praca McCloud koncentruje się wokół idei komunikacji, społeczności i świętowania: jak zbliżać ludzi do siebie poprzez nieoczekiwane. Herberg Rustiek to „marka” garncarza.

czwartek 17:00: oficjalny powitalny wykład o historii Kiosku i Księcia Schaærbeek

A glitch in the time/space continuum, a beacon of hope, a ceramics shop, a concert hall, a bar, a craft centre... all this and more from 22-25 september 2022 @sklep.galeriakarowa dziękuje ! Especially the help and organisation of Ania ! Structure made from 100% dumpster dived materials sourced from the bins of Warsaw. 6 days of hunting & constructing 4 days of otherworldly activation. Ceramics sold, shakers made, music performed, lectures avoided, games played, drinks drunken, fun had. And yes, if you look closely there is a cherry on top (or at least a kriek vogel ;)

SCHA/ARLON/BEEK

PRINS ZONDER CARNAVAL was invited to create a special project for the ARALUNAIRES music festival in ARLON, Belgium.

Working closely with Nicolas Musty, we came up with the idea to make a festif twinning between Arlon & Schaærbeek.
Both communities had no carnavals in 2020 nor 2021 nor 2022.

De Prins McCloud, visited Arlon on a few occasions in early 2022 to feel out the carnaval atmosphere and dive into the folklore of the area. Meeting with Numa Glesener, President of the Arlon Carnaval association, and ancient Prince Carnaval of Arlon, we were able to agree that a gathering and parade were the best way to celebrate our twinning and also a wonderful way to start off the music festival.

After failed attempts to get giants from Schaærbeek to Arlon, we settled on bringing the float of goodwill, the Pleziertuig in honor of Pogge and the Friends of Pogge. We stocked a cubi of krieklambiek from Girardin in the float to share with our new friends.

We took to the streets !

The Royale Philharmonie l'Union Sterpenich-Barnich also participated.

De Prins got to lead the parade.

Upon arrival at the Parvis, we shared a drink of unity : liqueur de Schaærbeekse Kriek.

instagram
I made 5 special cups, one side for Maitrank one side for schaarbeekse kriek jenever: Then we spoke of the day and the project :

Then the group played a concert, including two Arlon inspired compositions : Take the B-Train and Maitrank.

It was a memorable time, filled with fellowship and joy. Hopefully one day there will agin be a carnaval in Schaæerbeek and we can start the party here.

BOOK : FESTIN

MIRRORED INFINITIES

Invited to participate in the group exposition "Mirrored Infinities" at The Agprognostic Temple :
"This is not what it was, this is what it will be" is a fountain in stoneware by McCloud Zicmuse (°1973, US), a place for a symbolical ritual cleansing, before entering into the sacred ground of the Temple.

"This is not what it is, this is what it is not" is an stoneware incensory for cleansing the air and reestablishing the metaphysical energies within the temple.
"This is what it is & This is how it goes" is the ritualistic activation of the two other pieces by the artist. Water is added to the fountain to renew the liquid evaporated away, fire is added to the incensory to activate the smoke. The activities are accompanied by chanting, singing and instrument playing. The figure of the temple keeper also went on to hold a marriage ceremony, a baptism, a vocal exercise workshop & a pottery fair.

PARADE : CHARLEROI

Invited by the Carnaval of Charleroi to create a new parade group, we decided to celebrate one of the institutions of Schaerbeek, The Royal Pole Archery Guild Saint Sebastian of Schaerbeek. ..

The idea was to reinvent the guild as a parade group, to make a version of the game that could be carried and shared with the public.

T-shirts were made with the crest of the guild in the colors of the team white and green (thank you to Nicolas Belayew for the fine silkscreening). Hats were ordered from a local manufacturer.

The 25th of February, we took it to the streets, 3 Schaerbeekers & a load of helpers from Charleroi & beyond !

Painting of warning signs & wood, creation of pennants & donkey mask by students from St. Luc art school in Liège. Donky costume by Corinne Clarysse & friends. Flags by Dhaenens-Lammens flag shop. Soldering work by Nicolas Buissart.Woodwork by members of the Koninklijk Gilde Sint Sebastiaan Schaarbeek. The rest was designed & constructed by VVVVP Penvoerder McCloud Zicmuse.

HET VLIER EEN HOMMEL OP AARDE

What you are listening to is the sound of a forgotten instrument. It has existed since the middle ages, but the earliest example still intact is from 1608. Once a staple in most households in the low countries, it is a true folk instrument, of the people, mainly played in the past by women who used their kitchen tables as a resonating surfaces to amplify & accompany traditional religious & secular tunes. Nowadays it seen rarely outside of museums in Brussels & other places you most likely have never heard of. It is not spectacular, its simplest version is just a long thin box with strings on top. Some of the strings are melody strings, which have frets placed underneath them, some are drone strings that have no frets. Traditionally it was strummed with a goose feather & notes were made by sliding a hard stick with a handle, from fret to fret on the melody strings leaving the drone strings ringing openly. The constant hum of the drones is where the name of the instrument comes from: bumblebee, which in Flemish, is a hommel.
The hommel has all but disappeared from the collective memory of Flanders. If it is seen outside of a display case, it is usually being played in a static way, denied the right to evolve & find a more contemporary voice. It has thus been replaced in the hearts of most Belgians by acoustic guitars & the more well known Appalachian dulcimer, which strangely enough is a descendent of this instrument: the grandparent is lost, the grandchild is celebrated. The first hommel I saw was years ago at the Volksinstrumentenmuseum in Gooik. Curious to how it would sound, I suggested to my father that we make one. A seasoned woodworker, he was up to the challenge & so we began... The sides & top are made from Douglas Fir recovered from an old bookshelf. The headstock block (schroevenstuck) is maple. The end block (staartstuck) is a piece of Oregon myrtlewood & the fretboard... I have to say I don't remember. We cut & sanded the wood, sawed the guides for the frets & set them in, created the bridge & nut out of ersatz granite, found some tuners from an old guitar & assembled the pieces together. Is is not the most elaborate example of a hommel, but, with the relationship I have forged with it over time, it's a beauty to me.
I do not play in a traditional way: I pluck, fingerpick, tap & bow amplified flat wound electric guitar strings. I change the notes with my fingers, metal sticks, bottlenecks steel tubes & the hard stick with a wooden handle, which has a special name : the vlier, which is a more local, Flemish Brabant, name of the instrument itself. I play in a tuning to be in harmony with the tin whistles you hear from time to time & occasionally play shakers I made by hand from branches, wire & bottle caps. The songs in this collection are not traditional either, they are inspired by cycling around Flanders & the landscape that surrounds my home in Niemandaal, a small village in the Pajottenland of Flanders, not far from the capital city, but isolated enough to not hear the constant hum of the highways. It's a nice place to relax, filled with what I would call elegant micro-landscapes: simple combinations of fields, grass, streams, small farms, rolling hills... Sometimes called the "Tuscany of the North", wine is replaced by lambik, a naturally fermented sour beer & it is well-known as being the place where Pieter Bruegel the Elder would set up his easel.
Until I was 40, I only played at home. Thanks to my friends at Herberg Rustiek, who released some tapes & encouraged me to play outside. I made my first public concert on top of an old slag heap near Liège. Since then, I have been invited to play a few concerts in Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Portugal, France & Japan. Thanks to Okraïna, you now have this record in your hands. I chose to keep the recordings quite raw in the hope that the natural reverb & warmth of your listening space can evoke the music's spirit & that you will have the impression I am playing next to you in the same room. I highly recommend listening through speakers rather than headphones.
If you would like to learn more about the hommel, I strongly suggest tracking down the out of print "De Hommel in de Lage Landen" written by Herbert Boone in the mid 1970's, coming to one of my concerts, or if you happen to be walking around Niemandaal & notice a warm light coming from my living room: knock. I just may invite you in to share a gueuze & play a few tunes."

BOOK : CHEMIN

CHEMIN is a book of illustrations by Anne Brugni with texts by McCloud ZIcmuse. Released in November 2017 it is the first independent release of L'Articho

I'M GOING TO THE STORE TO GET SOME VEGETABLES

This is for the moment the last physical recording of Le Ton Mité.
I was speaking to someone about the state of lyrical composition in the majority of contemporary songs, and remarked that one could sing about anything, even "going to the store to get some vegetables" in today's world. Being on tour in November of 2013 with Asuna, I put this to the test and improvised frequently this "song", culminating in the live performance included on this disc.
The rest is a game of styles, of genres, The songs are technically all titled "I'm going to the store to get some vegetables" and what is noted is the style represented.
The recordings terminated in 2014 were finally released on mini CD by the label of Asuna, Aotoao.
