I love Mel through and through but I cannot find it in myself to say that her and Jayce should’ve continued romantically in season 2, or that meljayvik/melvik could ever work.

While she def did love Jayce in season 1 she did use him and viktor for political and financial gain. And her and viktor always hated each other (also viktors 100% a gay man)

Also I think even tho canonically labels and homophobia don’t exist in arcane it was def some form of heteronormativity that caused jaymel maybe like…. Classism or smth…. Idk 🙏

imho jayce/mel was always a relationship of convenience with a very clear economical stipulation of success that is planted all throughout s1 act 2 (mel literally walking out on jayce when he doesnt present his new gizmos on progress day bc she had already promised them to investors. lol. later on pressuring him to do a whole round of black market shakehands under HER inherited opera house which is used as a meeting point between all the corrupt topside politicians. do i even need to expand.) and its only made worse when the phony-ruler training stuff comes in and both ambessa and mel start competing to see who can manipulate jayce into making weapons for the empire faster. I've always said that storyline was inconsistent as fuck and it does a lot of flip flopping near the end of s1 (do you want weapons or not? it changes every scene.) but at least people cant call me crazy anymore bc they WERE grooming jayce into being the pliant triggerfinger figurehead and once that fails all the attention is shifted onto caitlyn, who's just so ready to fall for the bait.

Like this is why jayce brings up the investment stuff during the breakup scene. this is why mel is fighting with caitlyn against her mother at the end of the series as a complete reversal of her goals. This was supposed to be a Thing. Character development for this bit in specific was RUSHED AS FUCK since they wanted to put all of the political tidbits as far away from the core plot as possible but its still there when you look. The ''empathetic'' political stringpulling ambessa does with cait is one she has taught her daughter, and she perpetuates with jayce, who is ofc upset at all the bullshit when he realizes what's happened in the end. And that it didn't just impact him, but also viktor and the cities at large!

clean break was actually the best thing they could have done with both of these characters and for a second I didn't believe they'd HAVE the balls to do it, but I'm happy to be proven wrong lmfao! if jayvikmel has no haters im dead. I'm not even getting into that whole thing but it bothers me *so deeply* to see viktor defanged and made into a fogbrained centrist yes-man when his entire arc is about the fatal consequences generations of these rich oligarch games have had on the low class people of the undercity. One of the only scenes of him raging in the entire show is him showing his disgust for mel's weapon proposition, and we just forget that happened? nuh uh. not on my watch

I think ppl do mel's character a huge disservice when they choose to ignore her more morally grey parts.

People react very defensively when someone calls mel 'manipulative' and that is very annoying bc these ppl act like everyone pointing out mel's manipulation or influencing is hating on her which is ridiculous??? Her slyness is one of my favourite things about her.

She IS kind. She isnt a bad person and i dont even think her personal gain is her main motivator, but power IS important to her. How could it not be when ambessa is her mother. "Mel haters are calling her manipulative!!" she is??? babe literally one of her first scenes is about her blatantly manipulating someone. And YES, she also manipulated jayce.

Its most apparent in the scene where she talks to jayce and viktor about potentially weaponising hextech, the difference between her attitude towards viktor and jayce is JARRING. She knows she cant influence viktor, so she simply just excludes him from the conversation and talks directly to jayce, putting on a much softer and more affable persona (Viktor even visibly reacts to that). That doesnt mean shes only using jayce or that she doesnt love him or that she HATES viktor, i dont think most of her manipulations are something she does consciously (we could get psychological about this being a learned tactic from growing up with a distant, demanding, narcissistic mother), which is why shes genuinely shocked when jayce blows up at her for "using him and viktor" in s2. I think she genuinely didnt see it that way and saw it as subtly guiding them (mostly jayce) towards success, but that doesnt mean she didnt sway him towards a path she picked out for him. (Which, lbr, he also very much let her do to him. Like hes not putting up a fight.)

That is a core part of her character and one of the most interesting, bc it tells us so much about her. Yall are always calling for more morally grey, complicated women, but when someone actually wants to talk about the complicated parts yall act like its an insult to the character. Like why would you want mel to be LESS interesting?? She IS a fox.

Wanting to join the Great Bastard challenge, Gaelythys (from valyrian god Gaelithor, because his mom tought it would be cool) is the son of a random witchey lady who says to be from Asshai but could also be just from anywhere in the east because westerosi lords do not know the difference. Aegon IV bedded her because it made the Dragonknight SUPER MAD being in the same room as her so Aegon went shes gonna live here now. Gaelythys grew up scrolling spells and scrolls from both his weird ass super hated at court mom and the royal library (he probably found the same scroll rhaegar will find about ice and fire but decided it just wasnt interesting) while trying to prove everyone he was a Big Bad Dark Wizard In TrainingTM but unfortunately for him Brynden was just better at being spooky than him so everyone tought he was just a pansy for reading. He ends up hating Bloodraven because he thinks he could do a better job at Magical Treachterous Liutenant so he sides with the Blackfyre. He still doesnt get along with Bittersteel tho. At some point he tried to convince Daemon to let him do the leech ritual mel did with stannis but Daemon didnt had time for that nerd shit. Used to throw plague rotting corpses at the loyalists with the trebuchets when unsupervised until Bittersteel made him stop "wasting resourches". He ran in exile with the Blackfyre, then when the Great Spring Sickness happened said he had summoned it with his rituals (he did not). Daemon II was his favourite Blackfyre kid. Has been trying to persuade every Blackfyre that if they cant have Westeros they should re-colonize Valyria which would totally work out #trust. Either at some point he actually tried to visit Valyria to show it could be done and died or (less realistic but funny to me) hes still out there and hes gonna run into Shiera!Quaithe and they are gonna do the spider meme. Hes actually bad at magic he just buyed his own excuse to skip PE in the Red Keep very hard. Despite living in the Red Keep and doing magic he never tried to bed Shiera so she immediately called him gay and bullied him as kids but also allowed him to swap rituals. Somehow both Bloodraven and Bittersteel still tought they were fucking which is why they hated him so bad.

Haven’t seen enough people talking about why timebomb and specifically ekko also suffered from arcane s2 being bad. Spoilers and crit

I’ll say more in depth later when I have gone back and revisited it with a clearer head and let me make it entirely clear I LIKE timebomb in concept. Much like caitvi. Like I see the vision I just don’t like a lot of the creative choices

Ekko in s1 was a REVOLUTIONARY he built the firelights w his own two hands and was sort of a foil to jinx and silco, he hated them but he wasn’t going to roll over to piltover either. He wanted independence but not through exploitation. He was a leader and a caretaker and mature beyond his years bc he was forced to be. And he hates Jinx bc she reminds him of that trauma and he’s betrayed by what she became like there’s SO much there look at it

In s2 he goes “hm my tree is being weird” and then gets sucked into the timey wimey thing and disappears for a whole act and the firelights aren’t even MENTIONED (and ik he wasn’t a major character in s1 either but like, he was still important and relevant to the plot throughout bc of the firelights?)

Then he gets sucked into this au portal (cool concept and cool execution) and falls in love with powder or whatever. And she ISNT JINX. SHE IS NOT THE JINX WE KNOW BC JINX IN MAIN TIMELINE IS FULLY BUILT FROM HER EXPERIENCES AND TRAUMA AND MENTAL ILLNESS. Like what Jayce said to viktor that’s part of her whether it hurts her or not. Her trauma doesn’t define her but it’s a part of her! And then all of a sudden Ekko’s sad bc he misses jinx (who iirc last time he met they had the whole I hate you and I miss you talk and they fought and both thought the other dead or whatever?) and then he’s talking her off the ledge even though he has absolutely no reason to! Because he DOESNT KNOW HER he knows literally nothing she’s done since s1 finale!!! Even the “jinx as a symbol for revolution” stuff from act 1 that went nowhere he would know NOTHING ABOUT bc he basically immediately went to Jayce? And they never did the revolutionary jinx stuff that was implied w the flag waving either so there’s no connection there either

Like a full episode was spent developing timebomb and it was interesting but also contributed nothing bc that is not jinx. She just feels like a mpdg and he doesn’t feel like ekko bc he needs to be in love w her for the plot? So they do absolutely nothing interesting they could for timebomb and still make it the entirety of ekko’s plot while tossing out the firelights and the zaun v. Piltover plotline as a whole

i mean again its hard to say bc this is right. objectively. like the stuff w timebomb was objectively well written. i just feel like it doesnt give ekko the space to be his own character outside of the ship? my point isnt that the stuff was poorly written i actually enjoyed it a lot and i think they did a good job w it i just also feel like it does ekko a disservice to have that be his only plotline and how it doesnt feel like it connects to his character in s1

i feel similarly about other plots in s2, like mel's. like yes this is good stuff! i love seeing mel in the spotlight the black rose magic stuff is interesting in a vacuum but also its totally separate from the interesting thematic roles in s1 that dealt with AGAIN THE CLASS CONFLICT AND POLITICS and dropping that for something different feels. like its a disservice to the characters, i guess?

also by having the timebomb development take place primarily in an au with powder and NOT jinx we dont really get to see jinx's thoughts at all. it feels like a repeat of s1 where someone is trying to save POWDER and not jinx, they dont see her as who she is now but rather who she was or could have been. which couldve been interesting to explore but they clearly werent interested in that ANYWAYS

Other agere thoughts: -Tai generally being very non confrontational when shes little but then she's colouring in and Lottie makes her go over the lines and Tai just fully slams her to the ground -Also little tai refusing muddy outdoor play when she's feeling fragile bc dirt on her hands is triggering. Also seeing the others make mudpies and being encouraged to join in and getting upset bc the whole eating dirt while sleepwalking thing is RAW for her -Jackie and Lottie absolutely HOARDING anything that can be used as sylvanian family furniture or props. Like Laura Lee sees all the thread has been taken off a cotton reel bc Jackie wanted it to make a table/ bottle caps being taken off still-full bottles/cute buttons being 'accidently' ripped of Jackie's new shirt and very conveniently turning up in her dollshouse.... -Van calling sweets 'lollies' bc of Bluey and getting everyone confused bc of lollies in Australia meaning 'general sweets' vs meaning lollipops other places -Mari colouring in her fingernails with feltpens for nail polish and Shaina asking why she doesnt just use her own nail polish and Mari's like '.....its not the SAME' -Van complaining a LOT when its her turn to drive them all somewhere and then later playing a game with Mel involving pretending to drive a cardboard box car. And like the game isnt even exciting, she's literally just playing that shes getting groceries and getting petrol but she also whines about doing that irl XD

Anyway, anyway, i love all of these. Thank you so very much for this it cheered me up plenty! My thoughts:

- Tai is such a mellow kid until she doesn’t feel like she’s in control of a situation, so disturbing her colouring - especially having her make a mistake which she’s very hard in herself about - would set her off immediately. And Lottie, not really understanding what’s going on, just getting up and shoving right back. She isn’t really upset by it at all, and very unaware of the bruise that’s going to pop up tomorrow. Tai and Lottie shoving fights are so funny to me, like they are both so calm but also so violent.

- Tai would hate mud play. Not only is it icky because it’s messy, she also feels so embarrassed about other tai and the mud that she feels like everyone would judge her for playing with mud (even if they have no idea). It also just makes her feel so sick and uncomfortable.

- They would be absolutely insane with the hoarding (i mean, same). Anything small enough will go missing no matter how unconventional and everyone knows if they are looking for something it’s probably in one of the Sylvanian families houses. “And this is Mrs Rabbit and her babies.” “Jackie are her babies sleeping in the lid of my shampoo?” Yes, they are. And Lottie is the best at swiping things without being noticed so they always grab stuff without people realising and she’ll later just hold it up to Jackie super proudly.

- This one made me laugh so hard because i (an australian) had to read this twice before i understood it. People refer to lollipops as ‘lollies’ and everything else is candy? This makes little sense to me but I completely understand how confusing it would be for everyone - I bet she picks up a lot of words which confuse the others and often imitates their accents without realising.

- Mari definitely thinks sharpie nails are the coolest ever. Shauna just doesn’t understand fashion.

- This is so funny. Van having the time of her life playing ‘drive to the grocery store’ after whinging about having to actually do just that this morning. Everyone except Van would find it very amusing. And, when big Van complains about driving she definitely gets many comments about ‘would you prefer it if we bought a cardboard car instead?’ Which she doesn’t appreciate.

i think itll always be in my head that melnem is a very under appreciated ship within the game. not unpopular, just under appreciated.

its pretty insane how the romance in the early access version of the game is practically nonexistent but their bond is so thick you can cut it with a knife. but so many take their ship as toxic yuri that it kinda ... ruins the point of their relationship.

nemesis doesnt hate melinoe for what she is, she hates what she does. she doesnt deserve any of her treatment of being a weapon and giving revenge for something that she has little to no emotional connection to. sure her family was taken away from her but, wheres the bond? wheres the memory? theres practically none, even when she meets up with hades in tartarus she doesnt really talk like hes a father to her. just like any other person in her path ... and thats what nem hates. she doesnt deserve to be put through literal hell to do something she was made to do. retribution should do it, nemesis should do it. she has motivation, but she was tasked to be a guard post. doing nothing. a daughter taken from her mother, her brother(s).

she voices her frustration at mel because its the one thing she can do, its a venting thing. and thankfully mel acknowledges that it is her venting out her emotions (or its just the autism and she forgets to takes it personally idk) and tries to help. but nem doesnt like help, she thinks she has to do stuff by herself all the time. but overtime when mel breaks that armor (gET IT) she slooowly shows parts of her care towards mel. giving her things in the nights, saying she prayed for her safety. this isnt just normal relationship stuff!! this is romance!! but in their own way!

even when mel has never been able to emotionally breakdown, nem is there to be that motivation.

my biggest hope is obviously them being the canon couple in the game. but also just . give me the two being vulnerable. i want nem laughing, i want mel crying. i want them to study each other's emotions. build on each other. be each other's comforts. look man i can be that next guy who wants that fade to black in mel's tent where they make out but you know what i also want? a god damn giggle from nem. a sob from mel. these two never been able to show each other emotion. let them show that. please. theres so much with this ship and people sweep it under the rug!! so please super giant games. you have the chance to do something really cool for a wlw couple. and its to give them depth.

we need to talk about mel because out of pretty much everyone in arcane ive been seeing the most drama with her and just... god is it all so fucking stupid. so for the next few paragraphs im gonna be talking about haters of mel, 'defenders' of mel, jayvik, meljayce, and just... everything going on with that because god is it a lot and god is so much of it bullshit and just plain old toxicity. so yeah...

so first off we're starting with with the haters and defenders of mel and honestly this is some of that dumbest fandom shit ive seen in a while? why? alright let's bring up some argument stuff that ive (and youve most likely) seen before. one of which being that her haters define her as 'problematic' and a villain which is not true well at least not more true than jinx being a villain. jinx is a worse character than mel but people hate on her because 'oh shes supposed to be portrayed as good!' when this was never the case.

in s1 mel was portrayed to be a politician and from what ive gathered she was meant to represent the upper class of piltover and the council members in general (with the exception being heimindinger). she was supposed to be a corrupt and morally ambiguous character just like what? politics, politics are not black or white all of the time. mel strived for her own goals and used people to get there. do you have to like her for this? no. you dont. in fact when i first watched s1 i hated this about her and her relationship with jayce gave me the ick (i did not ship jayvik at all during this time). but we'll get more into that later

now the 'defenders' of mel. where to begin? well first off if you dont like her you get called misogynistic, if you ship jayvik well then youre writing her out and therefore are misogynistic, if you criticize mel for any of her actions guess what you are? yeah misogynistic. they really like throwing that term around for no other reason than mel being a woman. what if she was a guy? would there be a problem with it? and what if people are still doing what they are with mel being a guy? is it still problematic? the answer is most likely no. also the problem with calling people misogynistic is that youre not attacking their argument but them as a person.

thats like if you said '1+1=2' and i went 'no youre stupid' or if i said 'the earth is round' and you told me that i was a conspiracy theorist. youre not attacking the argument but the person themselves. youve done nothing to disprove their argument, sure you called them a mean name but whats that going to do? people hardly ever even argue why thats the case and why its wrong, but they throw around the world mindlessly. i would be fine if people were saying that their argument was misogynistic and therefore they would be misogynistic for supporting it but even then just leave it.

not to mention that mel was written to be morally ambiguous in a sense (in s1 and in s2 she gets better but still is... eh on morals imo) and if you bring this up these 'defenders' will go rabid over you. calling you names and saying how youre 'part of the problem' and that you cant handle a strong female character and this is just by you criticizing them keep in mind. maybe you dont agree with their actions but that doesnt matter to them and its horrendous.

now moving onto jayvik and... yeah it has its issues, i will NOT lie and say that there isnt an unreasonable dislike for mel in certain parts of the community because believe me there is and its almost always uncalled for and their reason is lacking to say the least, once again mel is a complicated character and to put her in a box and say that she's the big bad is entirely and fully unreasonable. ive seen large parts of the fandom also hating on mel just because she 'gets in the way' of jayvik and i guess that this is true but also people do forget something really important

HOWEVER this is not the only drama with jayvik, once again if you ship this rabid mel enjoyers will say how youre misogynistic which... yeah it fucking sucks.

tbh everything with mel has got to be some of the most toxic shit ive ever seen in my life (not worse than mha and ochako but hopefully as a fandom we never get there). because mel enjoyers if they dont ship jayvik tend to ship meljay or jaymel or- whatever its called and since its canon to some extent (they did kinda break up) they will use that as a way to discourage jayvik shippers and once again call them names that do not make any sense to the argument that they are giving as they are just spewing out random ass insults to people who disagree with them

theres a smart girl inventing stuff and trying to change the world, a man comes along and supports her endeavor fully, throughout the way makes heavy advances towards her in order to trap her and get her to do what he wants. this happens and in order to trap her even further puts her in a position of power which she knows nothing about and therefore relying more and more on him and his knowledge. advances are made and they fuck but to him she is just an investment. of course as the relationship carries on he might start caring more and more about her but the manipulation never truly leaves

see what makes it so bad? me and my friends talked about this for hours thinking about it and finding out what made us not like the ship in s1 (keep in mind we did NOT ship jayvik only started after their divorce). we loved mel's characters, she's a strong woman a strong character with flaws and she's compelling. but she was never written to do morally good decisions 100% of the time and thats what makes arcane so good ignoring all of this is not understanding mels character or her actions

Here are some of my hot (or maybe tepid) takes about arcane:

-the show could have used another season or like at least 5 more eps per season. Thats not a dig at the creators bc we know they were already forced to cut stuff out, but imho it shows a little, esp in s2. I fully believe Sevika was one of the biggest victims here, i genuinely believe she had an arc in s2 act 3 that was fully cut. And her being one of the biggest defenders of zaunite independence also means that by cutting her they basically gutted that storyline.

-the sheer lack of time with some characters also means that i simply did not connect with some of them, which made their deaths kind of underwhelming. Like i gasped when loris, isha, elora and sky died, but i cant say i was actually sad. That might be a me problem, but i need a little more time and info on a character to feel literally anything about them.

-on the other hand: we need to accept that sometimes background or minor characters are just that. No they werent robbed, no they werent underwritten, theyre simply not that important and thats OK bc theyre characters, not real people. You dont need to give equal attention to all characters for it to be "fair". And i sometimes feel like ppl think they HAVE to bemoan this. esp when its a female character a lot of fans talk about "sidelining" or "theyre using them as a plot device!!" Buddy, sometimes characters are literally just there to move the plot along, thats not inherently a social justice issue. (Ive seen this the most with sky and lest and like.... sorry, they were never gonna be more important than this. They can still be your fave, but just bc you wanted to see more of them doesnt mean they were sidelined for nefarious reasons)

-however sometimes the problem isnt that a character got too little screentime. S2 is a perfect example to show you can do a lot of character work in less time (viktor, ekko) and little character work with a lot of screentime (vi, sorry). Viktor and ekko were missing for entire episodes and managed to have full character arcs and vi was kind of there the whole time, but stuff just happened to her? Like she does do a lot, she looks incredibly cool, i liked watching her scenes, but her motivations, her goals and her values are ALL over the place. I love caitvi, but it did kinda ruin vis integrity when she threw away core beliefs (she becomes an enforcer, she temporarily agrees to kill jinx, she participates in chem warfare against the undercity) for cait. Hmmmmm.....

-i wasnt that deep in the fandom in s1 so i might have simply missed it or i might just not be following assholes, but the "jayvik shippers hate mel" thing never made sense to me. NOT because i dont believe it, bc i sure as hell have seen enough mlm shippers be fully misogynistic or racist, but the way ppl (mainly meljay shippers lbr) talked about jayvik shippers being horrible to mel like it was this HUGE thing confused me bc i personally have seen like 2 fanfics where they horribly mischaracterise mel to be a viktor-hating bitch, but thats it? Like, was that an actual problem or was it ppl deliberately misunderstanding stuff? (One specific example: ive seen someone accuse jayvik shippers of being misogynists bc they accused mel of manipulating jayce and sidelining Viktor. Which is a canonical thing happening in the show. before my internet cuts off for the day i am thinking of how ambessa acts towards/about mel during the entirety of act 1. panicking and tender and possessive when she finds her daughter in the aftermath of the attack, stroking her neck and cheek. then not even one day later challenges mel on her own field and starts manipulating her fellow council members openly, staring directly at mel as she does so. cutting off mel's contacts and scaring her infiltrators and completely taking over piltover's political scene for her own ends. but when asked, shouldn't mel be informed? ambessa responds "she is safer as our enemy" which is such an insane line—you exile your daughter for being too soft and let her build her own empire her own way, and then you show up to reap her spoils, but also out of love you want her to hate you and to stay far away from you and the horrors that are right at your door. they took your son, and you'd rather your daughter curse your name than risk her life. you'll take everything other than her life, though, because you still own her. she's yours and yours alone, your family. and then when anybody badmouths her you choke the lights out of them, because again mel is yours. it doesn't matter that you cast her asides because your feelings for her terrified you, it doesnt matter that you are destroying all her work and everything she holds dear, it doesnt matter that you are purposefully alienating her for what you call her own safety—you own her and nobody gets to touch or harm her! you use another woman's daughter to accomplish your wicked deeds because you believe your own daughter is too soft and that the further away she stays from this and the more she hates you the safer she'll be. you know what's best for her wherher she likes it or not. and yet it doesnt matter because she's gonna get involved anyway! she cant let you do what you've done your entire life—take and swallow whole and burn down to the ground! and as such she isn't even safe from the enemies you vowed wouldn't touch her! what a mess you've created. what a daughter you've ruined
