• And that's that. The end of your career. Years filled with blood, sweat, and tears all gone up in flames and scattered metal. You're dismissed and discharged after a good one-hour lecture. For instrument failure and unauthorized deviation from the flight path. It was as brutal as you imagined. Didn't think it would come so soon but knew it was fast approaching anyway. Whatever that was out there... it was definitely not human. The last moments before you blacked out keep flashing in your head like a broken record. Though it was only bits and pieces, you remembered enough to know that whatever ripped out the canopy of your poor ride had taken you along with it and laid you in the dirt like an afterthought.

• It must've been a day before you got back in touch with HQ and they had to haul the jet's wreckage. You told everyone what happened, delirious and consciousness fading in shades of black. Of course, the only reaction you got was that you went crazy and suffered some serious trauma. But you're not obsessed, nor are you insane. If you could just decipher the message that played right before your engines decided to give up on you, you'd have undeniable proof.

• You spent a good amount of your first week retained as a ground technician, gathering what you could find about ‘robotic noises,’ and while YouTube wasn't exactly helpful—online forums had a vague idea. Theorizing about alien languages and the usual rambling about extraterrestrials. Never mind your coworkers ignoring you or avoiding you because this was so much bigger than that. If you somehow proved that it wasn't just you out there, a chance at flying again wouldn't just be reduced to a fleeting dream.

• The cluttered maintenance bay was devoid of people. Salvaged parts from your downed aircraft that you 'managed' to get a hold of before they'd haul it away. Your F-16 lay before you, torn and bare, as you took another moment to mourn its loss before crouching down beside the fuselage fragment, accompanied by the slow drip of coolant on the concrete floors beneath your boot. Your workspace just over the side—computer screens and wires laid across the table. The audio file of that constant metallic chitter in your head playing on repeat like additional background noise.

• It’s dumb, and obviously it wouldn't be that simple. You had a close friend—former neighbor—check out the spectrogram for it, and oddly enough, there were symbols and images in between. It just looked so much like those stupid little boxes you and your classmate would play cipher games with in elementary. Of course, it was just for fun, so you started matching, going over a meaningless set of first and second. Trying for the third time tonight, with a different cipher, sitting on stacked crates and scribbling over the pages of an old notebook.

• Brow furrowing in concentration, other hand occupied with the keyboard, and your gaze flitting from the note to the screen. Unnatural symbols coming together to finally form words you didn't think were possible, because it simply looked like gibberish and out of a fantasy book for you.

Mars: Ambition, drive, power, courage, instincts, anger, passion

Aries & Scorpio (Pluto)

Both are ambitious, driven people. Motivated by goals and desires. They want to take action and are independent people. Do not easily obey or submit to others. Passionate people and can be spiritual as well. They can both resist temptation and focus in on what they want.

Solitary people. Mars likes to operate on its own. Undisturbed and un-influenced. Can be loners or they just like to lead the pack. Both positions are lonely.

They both have excellent instinct and trust their natural talents. They have a strong sense of self built on their accomplishments. They are hard-working and can put their noses to the grindstone!

Scorpio is more subtle and reserved (yin/water) but ultimately has more stability and focus (fixed). Scorpio studies, analyzes, processes, interprets, understands. Pluto is the destroyer, so Scorpio has a lot of concentrated power. If Aries is a cannonball, Scorpio is a laser. 

Scorpio has more endurance (Scorpion). They can weather a lot of different situations and will defend themselves if they have to. But this won’t be their first response (yin). They’ll likely figure you out first, pinpoint your weaknesses, and keep their head above water. But best believe, they know what buttons to push and how to hit where it hurts. Cold people, ruthless at times. More feminine-leaning Scorpios can display this easily. Spiteful people, can hold a grudge if they really are emotionally invested. Eye for an eye kind of people. They will linger emotionally in situations and fester. 

Scorpio’s expression of Mars + Pluto creates this desiring nature. This kind of speaks to a Scorpio theme which is suffering. Scorpio can have a relationship with desire where it is extremes of grasping and staying away. Hot and cold hot and cold. Never satisfied. They are (yin) so they need something to fill them. Something to warm them up. They like to hold onto things. Some Scorpios can be indulgent (Taurus/Venus opposition) but it’s more like Scorpio will indulge their feelings. If they really want something and they’re fixated on it, they will indulge that desire. 

Aries on the other hand can be more dynamic and bold (Fire/Cardinal). They like to explore, try different things, and make progress towards what it is they have set their sights on. Aries is the baby (Ram/Lamb) of the zodiac so there is this theme of maturation with Aries. They need to master themselves and their abundant fiery energy. Scorpio is more likely to have the introspection available to understand their motivations and why they do things. Aries can be like this as well, but they can also be childish in their approach to matters.

Overestimating their abilities, underestimating their abilities, biting off more than they can chew, taking on too much at once. Their Martian energy wants to do, do, do, do, do, and it’s firing on all cylinders.

The importance of having a goal for your writing.

Before I committed myself to writing, my main effort and hobby was drawing. 

Like the beginner of anything, I wasn’t any good at first. Picking up the pencil for the sake of drawing was strange. Scratching the paper and holding the pencil in unusual ways added to the difficulty. 

Although I struggled, I learned and reached levels I never thought possible.

I began with short, achievable goals and accomplished them without effort. With every achievement, I’ve felt motivated to reach far. What’s more, it took only two months for my drawings to seem digestible, creative, and ingenious.

However, after a year of consistent effort, something unexpected happened. My skills plateaued. 

I’ve reached a ceiling I couldn’t see before. My abilities consisted of what I’d done the last seven months and nothing more. The same technique, the same execution, the same style, and good old routine. It got boring. 

But boredom wasn't the most worrying thing for me. It was the fact I wasn’t making the same meteoric improvement as before.

So I asked myself, "How come?"

The answer was simple: I plateaued for the lack of a proper goal. My skills stagnated because I lacked an aim for my energy.

I began challenging myself less and less and falling into a routine. A Comfortable, familiar, and in no way stressful routine. I killed my passion and courage of self-challenge because I preferred safety and casual over excellence.

But it wasn't going to play out the same for my writing journey. I was prepared.

From the start, I made a goal for myself. A specific, measurable, relevant, and timely goal. Or a SMART goal.

My first aim was to write a hundred and twenty words a day. Then, I increased the number bit by bit.

After achieving my first goal, I moved to another. But I didn’t leave my last objective behind, as I kept increasing the daily word count each week. 

The next goal was finishing a short story. Writing the first draft, editing it twice or thrice until it shines, and publishing it to the world. I accomplished this goal, congratulated myself, and moved on. 

My current goal is to improve my writing by finding weaknesses and bolstering my strengths. Alongside publishing a short story collection. Sometimes, the goals seem too ambitious for me, but I've learned to trust myself in reaching them.

Of all the ways I thought Ning would handle the proposed slander against her beloved Zhang Zhe, the way she actually handled it did not align with my imaginings in the slightest. Sometimes what plays out is really better than the fiction in your head, hee. I did not see her calling out, not the dumb fiancee but the You-daughter. Nor did I foresee her half-drowning her in a jar full of goldfish.

Judging by the all the clips I have gorged on, this particular love line will be quite strong and trend for a while. Sigh. A decade plus of drama watching has whittled my patience for second lead to first lead love lines to whisper-thin nub but everyone keeps commenting on how amazing Zhang Zhe is so.... I guess the wait and watch won't be too grating.

Zhang Zhe broke or bent his principles to help her on the oath that she'd become a good person thereafter.

Sometime later, Zhang Zhe is condemned to death for this.

Did he naturally get caught? Or did she deliberately sell him out? Was it more similar to the Yan Lin situation in which her people made moves without her knowledge and when push came to shove, she didn't make the necessary moves to upend the conspiracy for the sake of remaining Empress?

Whatever the case, it's clear Ning did many terrible things - some in ignorance, some in knowledge - to accomplish everything she achieved. I think she squared most, if not all of it with herself when weighing it against the ultimate end result... until Zhang Zhe ended up on the chopping block. I don't think she would have been able to write this sin off and once one stone in her ambitious bedrock was overturned, the rest likely came apart. It's why when she knew she was going to die she wanted her death to mean something, to be a reparation of sort to the only person remaining who might accept it because he thought she was worth something, because he's that good.

Lately, I have been tired. I am not sure if it's burnout, a random depressive episode or executive dysfunction. All I know is I haven't been really doing as much as I could be. I didn't want to admit it since I was still doing enough to get 80% on most tests and things could be worse.

Looking back, however, I haven't really done much that enjoy lately. I don't remember the last time I turned on some good music and wrote away, burning the midnight candle for something that made me alive. And there has been this constant knot of anxiety at the bottom of my stomach. So, things haven't been vibrant but things aren't exactly bad. It's like waking up on the wrong side of the bad; nothing's horrible but everything's off nonetheless.

All this is to say, I think I need to bounce back and I'm done being passive for this year. I've always been ambitious and I'm going to start pursuing things I want again. I woke up today feeling weirdly motivated so I've decided to start the 100 days of productivity challenge!

Things I hope to achieve from this challenge:

Become good enough in Physics that I can enjoy it again

Finish at least half of the CS50 course

Study for SATS

Make a complete compilation of which Unis to apply to

Finish at least two WIPs

Get better at French

Extra/Less-prioritized goals:

I think there will be two main obstacles in the way of me accomplishing these things. The first will be finding time. Most of the goals I've mentioned are things I have been putting off for more immediate concerns or just, generally, people needing me for things in the present that need to be dealt with but don't have much of an impact in the future.

The second problem is my undeniable internet addiction. Okay, I feel like internet addiction is too broad; my addiction to constantly consume some form of creative media, be it in the form of books, movies, TV shows, anime, cartoon, comics, or fanfiction. I really need to cut down on that. I think this will be the most difficult part. I'll try cutting out serialized content and instead explore more indie books and movies again. They're usually less addictive but fulfilling in the same.

As always, I'll be ending this post with some talk about the most recent shows that I have been enjoying, which is kind of ironic given the previous paragraph is me just complaining about my inability to stay away from them. Lately, I have been into the ongoing Kdrama "My Lovely Liar." I think the chemistry between the main characters is great and the mystery is alluring. An 8/10 in my books.

Other than that, I've been watching "The Boys." Currently, in season three. It's one heck of a show and it's just so believable and feels like a mirror to reality. The corporate greed of pharmaceutical firms, the corruption among the people who have sworn to protect us, and how hard the world works ... only to maintain the status quo. I think it's very interesting and directly draws parallels to the real world. It's definitely a 10/10 for me. The world building, characters, humour; everything hits just right.

That's all for today. I'll do some chemistry, look over the CS50 course and fill out some forms for some official stuff today and kickstart the productivity challenge tomorrow. I'll try to be more active on tumblr during the 100 days as I need something to keep me accountable. Here is to hoping for better me's and better days and better outcomes.

If there is one concept or notion or idea or noun that I wish the Earth signs (Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo) would adapt as their obsession and passion and battle cry, it’s sustainability. We need you all and your close connections to Mother Earth. Some of us are listening and ready to spread the word (Air signs) and fight the battles (Fire) and heal the planet (Water).

Anyway, it’s Virgo season, and making everything more “interesting” is the fact that Mercury, ruler of Virgo, stations retrograde about nine hours after the Sun enters the sign. Mercury remains retrograde until the day after the Virgo New Moon on September 14/15.

So I think a lot of the initial Virgo work is going to be more internal, maybe even un- or subconscious. We may not be clear (which will drive us bonkers if we let it) until after Mercury stations direct - maybe not even until Mercury exits its storm on September 19.

What to do in the meantime? Notice things. Take good notes - don’t assume you’ll remember. Work really hard to take care of yourself.
