Witchcraft In Media
Tumblr media
While most depictions of witchcraft in movies and TV shows are sensationalized for entertainment, some portrayals incorporate authentic elements from historical, folkloric, and modern witchcraft practices. Here are some of the most accurate depictions:
Movies
• The VVitch (2015) – One of the most historically accurate depictions of 17th-century Puritan fears of witchcraft, featuring real folklore, rituals, and paranoia about witches.
• Häxan (1922) – A silent documentary-horror film about medieval witch trials, based on historical accounts.
• The Craft (1996) – While dramatized, it incorporates real Wiccan elements, spellwork, and the ethics of magic.
• Practical Magic (1998) – Features real herbalism, divination, and folk magic traditions blended with fantasy elements.
• The Love Witch (2016) – Stylized but captures real elements of glamour magic, spell-casting, and the psychological aspects of witchcraft.
• A Dark Song (2016) – A rare and realistic portrayal of ceremonial magic, based on the Abramelin ritual, which is a real occult practice.
Tumblr media
TV Shows
• Salem (2014–2017) – Though dramatized, it draws on real 17th-century witchcraft beliefs and Puritan fears.
• Luna Nera (2020, Netflix) – Based on real Italian witch hunts and folklore, focusing on midwives and cunning women.
• Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018–2020) – Uses real occult symbols, ceremonial magic, and references to historical witchcraft practices, though blended with fantasy.
• Penny Dreadful (2014–2016) – Features historical witchcraft lore, including Verbis Diablo, necromancy, and folk magic elements.
• American Horror Story: Coven (2013) – While exaggerated, it incorporates elements of real New Orleans voodoo, hoodoo, and folk magic.
Tumblr media
Cartoons & Animated Shows
• The Owl House (2020–2023) – Features sigil magic, covens, and different branches of magic inspired by real mystical traditions.
• Over the Garden Wall (2014) – Uses folklore-inspired magic and eerie Americana witchcraft themes.
• Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989) – A gentle, accurate take on hedge-witchery, showing a young witch using magic for simple, everyday purposes.
• Hilda (2018–present) – Explores Scandinavian and European folklore, including real folk-witch elements.
Tumblr media
Honorable Mentions (Folklore-Inspired, but Not Entirely Accurate)
• The Wicker Man (1973) – Paganism-based but leans more into horror than actual witchcraft.
• The Blair Witch Project (1999) – Uses real witch lore but is entirely fictional.
• Suspiria (1977 & 2018) – Features elements of real occult and esoteric traditions related to dance and ritual magic.
• Sleepy Hollow (1999) – Includes genuine European witchcraft folklore, mixed with gothic horror.

*Chimney & Hen making fun of Eddie*
Chimney: you will sleep with anything that moves!
Eddie: that’s so not true
Buck: *almost falls off the ladder truck*
Eddie:
Eddie: I will fuck that thing that moves

so annoying when people go “actually this is super unrealistic and wouldn’t happen irl” like yeah, if I wanted to watch a realistic depiction of a certain job or thing I would be doing research or watching a documentary on that job or thing not a tv series or movie purposely dramatizing that job or thing for drama

Hypothetical shibari/ropeplay ideas you could hypothetically put boat guys in
Everything except actual sex under the cut
Feel free to take them-
Tie one of his legs to his chair until he finishes writing a set task. Just leave him there forced to work and wait for the rigger’s approval
Tired? Need help with keeping proper posture? What about a wearable chest harness with knots strategically placed along the spine, maybe even with an added small board to keep him straight, mmmh? It would barely be noticeable under all those layers anyways…
The mermaid leg tie. Like this one. -I just think it’s pretty-
Tumblr media
Fisherman’s harness -also just really pretty-
Tumblr media
Suspension play: there’s not much place for anchors in the cabin themselves- you have the base of the lamps, and the way the beams are set up in the show imply a gap in the corners where you can set up your columns.
Tumblr media
Otherwise, everywhere they put up hammocks would have strong anchors already on- there’s a good chance new ones could be set in supporting beams
If you’re on a moving ship: a full suspension will make his weight shifts into the tied points- if there’s a lot of them, in a deep pressure gentle rocking way, but the fewer there are the more concentrated his weight will be, bringing it more in a « my limbs are being wrenched out of their sockets territory (also fun), and the location of the tension will switch up
If they’re on landlocked Terror: partial suspension with multiples uplines where he could keep part of his body on the floor, but would have to keep fighting against the angle of the ship to stay comfortable (ex: simple harness across the upper chest with one upline, folded leg tie with another upline tied to the same anchor leaving his other leg barely touching the ground)
Bonus: type of ropes
Cordage would have been mostly hemp ropes (from here) …. They probably wouldn’t have other options, but my heart says cotton rope too to give them more options (couldn’t find a reference for it)
Comparison from ropestudy:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The last, more farfetched but not impossible option would be coconut rope: very rough, considered a torture rope 🥰 they could have picked it up in Oahu or something. For reasons. The rigger would probably have to wear gloves that’s how abrasive it is
If they want to avoid rope burns and reduce bruises, they could do it on top of clothes- it would be pretty easy to cover up in any case with, again, all the layers they have on

It will be worth it if I am remembered, if not flatteringly, then at least with some small amount of accuracy.

crying at the accuracy (I'm stuck at my recent Zoyalai fanfic chapter, cuz I don't know what I should write) (someone safe me) (or sedate me) (your choice)

It is certain that the easy and obvious philosophy will always, with the generality of mankind, have the preference above the accurate and abstruse; and by many will be recommended, not only as more agreeable, but more useful than the other.

If you have something to add to the discussion, put it in a reblog.
And if you're making, or even backing up, an accusation, put your evidence in that reblog.
I will repeat this for the people in the back. Commenting in the tags was invented as a tradition back when the alert system on tumblr was very, very annoying. That has changed, it's now just tradition, and should be used where appropriate.
You can use it for dittos and attaboys and 'OMG I can't evens' and the like, but if you're trying to actually contribute to the conversation at hand, particularly if it's a serious issue, REBLOG like an adult.
I saw this on the recent Palworld thead:
Tumblr media
None of these accusations is supported or sourced, and I've made a separate post to explain why in depth on deepdreamnights. But what's relevant here is if you say something like this, you should be linking to your evidence, or at the very least making it a proper reblog so it can be involved in the discussion.
Tumblr media
It is your responsibility to check the veracity of claims that you pass on to others.
Really read over that post and then think back to John Green.
Or, just, you know, any moral panic in goddamn history.
Passing on rumors of wrongdoing, particularly when you "have no knowledge" of the situation, is irresponsible and potentially dangerous behavior. There's this attitude that if the issue is serious enough that the safeguards can be taken off and alarm bells rung. But that's backwards. The more serious the issue, the more effort should be put to verifying them correctly.
If you consider plagiarism a deeply important issue, then you should be more careful, not less, when passing on accusations of it. Doing otherwise isn't just a mistake, it's an ethical failing.
