I’ve been getting so many requests and messages about the resources I use to make my graphics + dividers soooo I made this cheat sheet for the resources + apps I use. Please keep in mind not everything is free to use or easy to use!!! These are the apps & browsers that I’ve been using for years and they work for me. I’m sure there are better & easier ways of doing things but this is what works for me and that’s okay <3 I also didn’t have the patience to make this aesthetically pleasing like I always do… so forgive me 😭

જ⁀➴₊⊹ 𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓 ᝰ.ᐟ Pinterest is a visual discovery and bookmarking platform designed for inspiration and idea curation. Unlike traditional social media apps focused on social interaction, Pinterest centers around interests.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊 𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓: I use pinterest for PNGs, theme inspo, basically what the app is used for. My Pinterest is this, you can follow me if you want and see all my boards!!! I’ve had it for years so it’s a little chaotic, but one thing at a time…

‧₊˚✧ 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒔: You can create your own boards + sections. It’s very good for organizing your different thoughts and aesthetics. Can be used for different purposes. I have boards for writing, my OCs, really just random things. Has a lot of different aesthetics, every one you can think of from angelcore, mcbling, Sanrio, cybercore, goth, etc. You’ll have a harder time not finding something you want or like.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔: A lot of artwork is published on there with no clear credit to the original author who made it. A lot of photos are also recycled so you’ll start to notice there’s a lot of the same aesthetic icons or photos under different accounts. This can be a pro or a con just depends on how you see it.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒎𝒊𝒔��.: I love this app a lot, I use it for so many things. A lot of my PNGs come from here for my dividers and what not. Usually I edit them too so I’m not directly taking something without giving it my own twist.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒂'𝒔 𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈: 10/10

જ⁀➴₊⊹ 𝐆𝐈𝐏𝐇𝐘 ᝰ.ᐟ GIPHY is a GIF search engine and creation platform—basically the internet’s go-to hub for finding and sharing short looping animations (GIFs), stickers, and reaction clips.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊 𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓: I use GIPHY strictly for stickers. They’re animated PNGs I use for dividers from time to time. GIPHY is a pretty goofy place so there’s a lot of goofy things that don’t fit my aesthetic. With that being said there is also a lot of stuff that is cool and worth using once you take the time to find it. You can find accounts that are more professional & aesthetic that post cool stickers.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒔: Has png animated stickers you can use. Has accounts that are pretty cool and post cute & aesthetic stickers. Easy to download images and easy to use in general.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔: Doesn’t really go by aesthetics like Pinterest does. If you type in an aesthetic it doesn’t really post things relating to it. Hard to find cool stickers worth using (in my opinion)

‧₊˚✧ 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒄.: none

‧₊˚✧ 𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒂'𝒔 𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈: 7/10

જ⁀➴₊⊹ 𝐓𝐔𝐌𝐁𝐋𝐑 ᝰ.ᐟ Tumblr is a microblogging platform and social network that blends creative expression, personal aesthetics, and niche community vibes all in one. It’s a hybrid space where users post multimedia content—text, images, GIFs, videos, quotes, and audio—onto their customizable blogs.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊 𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓: I think it’s pretty obvious what i use tumblr for. But on a business basis it’s good for PNGs and divider inspo when you need it.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒔: Creative freedom, fandom & subculture heaven, expressive & honest environment, aesthetic curation, no algorithm timeline, anonymity, ad-light. You can really find your community here and stick with them. You can post whatever you want, design your blog however you want, expression is fun and encouraged. A lot of creators give dividers & PNGs for free with only a credit requirement.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔: Bots, gets political sometimes, trolls. I never deal with them or have to deal with rude comments or bots, but they exist. People can steal your works as use as their own (hasn’t happened for me but ik it’s happened to some). Sometimes the database doesn’t work randomly (can’t tag others, can’t queue, etc.) minor grievances that happen randomly and can take hours to days to randomly fix itself.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒄.: Overall I use this app for running my own blog (obviously). I do use it for inspo a lot but because I make my own graphics I try not to use anybody else’s. And if I do use someone else’s graphic I always try to edit it my own way to fit my blog. Be aware of creators rules & guidelines if you’re going to use their things, everyone has their own regulations when it comes to content recycling.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒂'𝒔 𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈: 10/10

જ⁀➴₊⊹ 𝐄𝐓𝐒𝐘 ᝰ.ᐟ Etsy is an online marketplace focused on handmade, vintage, and unique goods. It’s the go-to platform for shoppers looking for personalized, artistic, or non-mass-produced items—and for creators who want to sell them.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊 𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓: To be honest, I might only use this option like once or twice a year but I’ll go ahead and add it anyway. Sometimes if I’m feeling lazy or unmotivated I’ll buy a digital set of dividers I build off of. Obviously Etsy is its own thing but I’m just speaking on a divider editing purpose.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒔: You can find digital downloads of dividers, PNGs, anything virtual related you might need. Sellers have cute borders and PNGs handmade from them that they sell for others. A good starting point if you don’t have any entirely original or creative ideas but need to start somewhere.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔: Obviously because this is a store you have to buy the products. They’re usually pretty cheap for a set of lace borders or PNGs, nothing I’ve used in the past was over $5 but I don’t use this option enough to have real understanding of its cons and pros 😭

‧₊˚✧ 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒄.: none

‧₊˚✧ 𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒂'𝒔 𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈: 10/10

જ⁀➴₊⊹ 𝐏𝐈𝐂𝐂𝐎𝐋𝐋𝐀𝐆𝐄 ᝰ.ᐟ PicCollage is a fun, beginner-friendly photo editing and collage-making app that lets you easily create aesthetic collages, scrapbooks, cards, and digital layouts using your photos, stickers, text, and backgrounds.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊 𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓: This is my primary way of making gif dividers. It’s a weird option for sure but it goes to show you don’t need really high tech software and fancy apps to make beautiful things!!! I’ve been using this for a while and it does the job so I never bothered looking for anything else. Maybe someday I’ll upgrade lol

‧₊˚✧ 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒔: You can add gifs and still images to the same post.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔: There are no transparent background options, you have to remove the background from another source. Unless you pay for its services it gives you a watermark when you’re done. Makes the collages into videos if there is an animated GIF in it.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒄.: This one is iffy for me as I use it in my own way with my own understanding of how to make it work. I’m sure there are better options out there like actual photoshop I just don’t have the patience to buy a pc and do it. I do everything from my own phone so this is from an entirely IOS standpoint.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒂'𝒔 𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈: 6/10

જ⁀➴₊⊹ 𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐕𝐀 ᝰ.ᐟ Canva is a graphic design platform that makes it easy for anyone—beginner or pro—to create beautiful visuals. From social media graphics to business presentations, Canva gives you drag-and-drop design power without needing to learn complex software.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊 𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓: I actually don’t use Canva, maybe once or twice in my history. I do reference it from time to time but it’s very rare. I’m only adding it in because it is a good platform to use with reliable PNGs and beginner friendly software. You don’t need to be a pro.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒔: Has a lot of good resources and once you find aesthetic and cool creators you can follow them. It’s easy to use and has a lot of good stuff made my people or uploaded by others.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔: Some stickers / PNGs you need to have some kind of subscription for them or pay for them + AKA many features have a paywall. Doesn’t include advanced photo editing software.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒄.: I do like this app I just don’t use it personally. It’s good for business / professional matters with a lot of good templates to use. It can also be used for aesthetic tumblr purposes if you know what you’re doing :).

‧₊˚✧ 𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒂'𝒔 𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈: 9/10

જ⁀➴₊⊹ 𝐕𝐈𝐓𝐀 ᝰ.ᐟ VITA is a mobile video editing app that’s perfect for creating aesthetic, stylish, and professional-looking videos—especially for social media. It’s beginner-friendly but packed with trendy, powerful features.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊 𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓: I use it to make my edits of the gifs I use for my very once in a blue moon super rare fics.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒔: You can add effects and words to gifs and make an aesthetically pleasing short edit. It’s a good beginners point if you do want to go into editing videos. I really like the effects and the way I can write on gifs. I believe it’s pretty easy to use for editing purposes and offers a lot of cool effects and options.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔: VITA uses a watermark but I believe you can turn that off for free. It saves any animations you make as videos so you have to turn it back into a gif using a second source. Some features are behind a paywall but I’ve never needed them so I don’t worry about it.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒄.: I really do like this app for making a small cutesy edit for a fic or a pinned post or something. It’s not something to use for real video editing where you can manipulate more specific cuts, audios, etc.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒂'𝒔 𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈: 9/10

જ⁀➴₊⊹ 𝐏𝐈𝐂𝐒𝐀𝐑𝐓 ᝰ.ᐟ Picsart is an all-in-one photo and video editing app that lets you turn ordinary content into aesthetic, creative, and eye-catching art. It combines the power of Photoshop-level tools with the ease of a mobile app.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊 𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓: I use picsart for just about any divider I make. My account is this, where I also provide stickers and resources on there. Of course I haven’t posted everything I’ve ever used as I couldn’t be bothered to edit every single png and post it but you get the idea. I use the transparent background which is key to making dividers. You want to avoid having to remove the background from images as much as possible as it can make it look grainy and weird.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒔: Has soooo many cute and aesthetic PNGs & stickers for making dividers. Like I said, I use this primarily to make mine. It’s very versatile for a photo editing software that incorporates cropping, drawing, effects, overlays, collage making, transparent backgrounds, etc. Many core features are primarily free. You can follow accounts with cute stickers and reference them for any post / divider you make.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔: Like many other services Piscart’s pro features are behind a paywall, you’d need a subscription to access everything (which I have because that’s what I want to do and it makes it easier for me). When you’re like me who makes dividers a lot having the subscription is a lot easier than not. With that being said you can still access very cute and aesthetic things to make something dazzling, you don’t need the subscription in order to use the app how you want to, it’s just a bonus.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒄.: None, I think I got my point across.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒂'𝒔 𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈: 9/10

‧₊˚✧ 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊 𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓: I use it for a lot of my posts, especially my pinned posts or more aesthetic posts. I use it anytime I need an image of works or when I need words for my dividers.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒔: Has a simple, user-friendly interface. Has a massive font library where you can also upload your own fonts (I use dafont.com and always have). Has highly customizable text options where you can make your own colors, resize, curve, center align, shadow, spacing, etc. The app is completely free and so easy to use. I use it for everything honestly. No sign-up required, you start creating immediately.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔: none really, it’s not a photo editing software it’s strictly only text on photos.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒄.: I’ve been using this for years. Get it if you don’t have it trust me.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒂'𝒔 𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈: 10/10

જ⁀➴₊⊹ 𝐏𝐎𝐋𝐀𝐑𝐑 ᝰ.ᐟ Polarr is a robust and versatile photo‑ and video‑editing platform available on mobile (iOS/Android), web, and desktop (macOS/Windows). It blends professional-grade features with an approachable, user-friendly interface—ideal for both beginners and seasoned creators.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊 𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓: I use it to edit any PNGs or dividers I want to make a more cohesive color. I use it to edit photos, change hues, etc. Another app I rely on religiously.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒔: Despite the many advanced photo editing features it’s very easy to use and understand. It has precision masking and selective editing, my go-to for editing photos or dividers to match the theme I’m going for. It’s also good for a lot of professional photography as well. I really love how many aesthetic filters are on there and you can follow the creators you love as well as make your own filters. You can also find a lot of filters on Pinterest and easily upload them to Polarr.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔: Like many other things advanced features are behind a paywall. In my opinion if you don’t have the subscription to it it’s not worth using unless you wanna watch a 30 second ad after every filter you apply and save to camera roll. When you use it once in a while it’s fine but when you’re like me who’s constantly editing something it’s better to have the subscription than not. Also, while it does have advanced features I can see that those would be intimidating to new users. It’s a learning curve you need patience with if you do wanna apply effects to your own photos.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒄.: I will say this is one of those apps that if you don’t have the subscription to it’s kinda annoying to use, but the subscription is so worth it and it’s not that expensive. Obviously I pay for the subscription but there’s other alternatives like Photopea you can apply filters to for free. I just like this one more because I’m comfortable with it and it’s more convenient than having to get a PSD, go on Photopea, duplicate layer, blah blah blah 😭

‧₊˚✧ 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊 𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓: I use it strictly for PSD’s that I use for my gif edits. I don’t really use it or actually go on it only when I need a photo effect or PSD.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒔: Speaking on a strictly divider making premise it’s not really used for that but there are PNGS and virtual download options you can use. I only use it for PSD’s for Photopea and most of the time I can get them for free.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔: Some PSD’s you need to pay the creator or however DeviantArt works 😭 I just don’t get those and get a free one instead.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒔: Helps make dividers or PNGs AI-enhanced and gets rid of any grain or blurriness.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔: The free version is limited and ad heavy. You have to watch an ad before the photo or video is enhanced. I don’t use it that often or really at all so I don’t mind the ad every once in a while.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊 𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓: I use this website for anything gif related. Cropping, resizing, removing gif background, turning videos into gifs, etc. It’s a website I swear by and if you don’t use it yet or haven’t used it yet you really really should. Whenever I make dividers I use this to make an image into a gif (moving sparkles, moving objects, etc).

‧₊˚✧ 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒔: It’s totally free and easy to use. You can add simple / basic effects, adjust settings + hues, remove background, crop, etc. for gifs and it really comes in handy for simple things you need to do.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔: It doesn’t use advanced features for video / gif making like Photopea. I’ve found that some of the tools are a little wonky to use like overlays. It can seem confusing at first when it comes to optimizing, tint hue, things like that that are a bit more specific.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒄.: This is my go-to for any basic function I need to use on a gif or divider. For simple animated dividers like moving sparkles, moving hearts, etc. This is what I use by making several still images into gifs.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊 𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓: This is my main go-to for background removal on PNGs or anything I need the background removed from. It’s my first option and is always super reliable.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒔: Easily removes backgrounds clean and easy with a tap of a button. Provides eraser or restore tools to areas you don’t want erased or need to erase.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔: Back when I started using it everything was completely free, but I’ve noticed that for an hd version of the finished protect you have to pay for it. I’m not sure what the difference is but it looks like the site is getting popular enough to put a paywall on its features. Be wary 😭

‧₊˚✧ 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒄.: I’ve never had to pay for anything, and I’m sure that it offers other services but I just use the remove background tool, so you’d have to explore on your own.

‧₊˚✧ 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊 𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓: Okay so Photopea is definitely a more advanced software even I haven’t fully understood yet. I use it to add PSDs, combine gifs, or whatever else I need to do that involves gifs or photos. I’m not perfect at it and really only know how to do the things I need to if that makes sense. It’s another version of photoshop but I just prefer using this one as I’m on my phone and it’s easier for IOS users 😭

‧₊˚✧ 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒔: It offers many advanced features like photoshop, and is my favorite one to use since I can’t really use photoshop on my phone. It supports a wide range of file types like JPG, PNG, PDF, etc. It’s free to use and you don’t need to pay for anything. It’s a browser and there is no installation needed. It’s fairly simple to use in my opinion when you have experience with photoshop / editing (as I do), so it’s even easier to use once you really know what you’re doing.

Event Rules and Info

Please read this post before you send an ask!

WHUMPTOBER is a month-long, prompt-based creation challenge (think: Inktober, but whumpier). There are 31 official themes this year - one for each day of the month - which can be used, skipped, or combined in any way you’d like. They are meant to serve as inspiration without being taken literally (e.g. you don’t have to include the exact wording of prompts into your work). Feel free to run rampant on interpretation. For example, if the prompt is “flame", you could create something with reference to a candle/campfire, your character could have suffered a burn, or the flame could be a reference to an ‘old flame’ - an old relationship. It’s truly down to you!

In total, there are 4 prompts for each day. These are optional suggestions and can be used in conjunction with the theme, or as options/alternatives. We want to give everyone as much creative freedom as possible, as well as increase event accessibility for folks with triggers and squicks. There is also a list of 15 alternative prompts that can be subbed in for any day, again to give participants as much creative freedom as possible.

Creators can PRODUCE work in any media they choose, including but not limited to: writing, visual artwork, photo/video/audio edits, paper crafts and elaborate recommendation lists (not just a list of links). Creators can PARTICIPATE as much or as little as they want (i.e. you don’t have to do ALL the prompts if you don’t want to) and prompts can be used in any order. They are also free to use even after the event ends.

When uploading Whumptober content to your blog, be sure to tag it with:

#bruises, #stabbing, …..(the theme or specific prompt you chose)

Unfortunately, due to the sheer number of participants in recent years, we cannot guarantee your work will be archived. A random selection of properly tagged posts from all genres will be reblogged each day.

Whumpers who produce content for 31 total theme days are considered event completionists and will be tagged in a masterpost at the end of the month. A form will be published at the beginning of November asking you to tell us if you completed. This is based on trust and we will not check this.

Hello! I've been an artist for around 5 to 6 years, and I still kinda suck at it! I do traditional art normally but I've been branching out to digital art as well. I mostly draw animals, anthropomorphic creatures, creatures in general, whatever beautifully ugly faces I can come up with, and sometimes human faces!

I classify as a furry but do not reblog a ton of furry stuff nor do I have a fursuit. I just like drawing and seeing anthropomorphic animals :3

I think eye bags and wrinkles are pretty (odd, I know lol), I live in a bus (not decked out like you see on social media though. In Defense of Fanfiction (Or the perfect starting point for your original novel)

Fanfic gets a bad rap pretty much everywhere except Tumblr. It’s misunderstood and misrepresented by its average works, seen as juvenile and cringey, or a banal point of contention between a famous person or piece of media and its fans.

Outside of fanfic that writes about real people, especially smut fics of real people, I support the art wholeheartedly. Fictional characters are one thing, but personally, caricaturing a celebrity’s life for public consumption and writing or drawing them in compromising content without their consent is a little weird. You do you. Don’t like, don’t read, as they say.

Fanfic is the perfect starting point for a few reasons:

It places you in a creative box and forces you to work within those constraints

It does all the worldbuilding and character concepts for you

It lets you write way outside your comfort zone

When published and receiving feedback, it boosts your self-confidence

It's incredibly flexible

It’s practice. All practice is good practice

Behold your creative box

When I was little I had no idea the majority of fanfic was shipping fics. I always pictured and looked for canon-divergent alternate universes. Like, what if X happened in this episode instead of Y? What if this character never died?

Fanfic demands you work within someone else’s canon, whether it’s an OC in the canonical world, or the canonical characters in an AU. These are like little bowling bumpers saving you from the gutter, but also keeping you on a straight-ish path toward the pins.

The indecisiveness of too many choices can be too intimidating when you’re first starting out. You want to be a writer but you have no idea where to begin, what genre to pick, what characters you want to chronicle, what themes you want to explore.

Even if it sits on your computer never to see the light of day, you still got those creative juices flowing.

Pre-packaged worldbuilding

Sometimes all we want is to get to the good stuff. Maybe I want to write a story about elemental magicians but Last Airbender already exists and I just want to play in a pre-existing sandbox. So I write some OCs into that world and have a free-for-all.

I don’t have to come up with my own lore, world history, magic system rules and mechanics, politics, geography—any of it. I get to just focus on the characters.

Even if you’re writing an AU, like say a coffee shop AU, you don’t have to think about brand new characters, you can just think “What would M do?” and go from there. The trade-off is your readers will expect canonical characters to behave in-character, but I think it’s worth it.

Stretch beyond your comfort zone!

Do you hate writing action scenes? Go practice with a shonen anime fic. Need work on dialogue? Write some high-fantasy fic, or a courtroom drama. Practice a fistfight by watching fistfights and writing what you see, and do it over and over again until what you read makes you feel like you're watching what’s on screen.

But beyond that—practice genres that you aren’t super familiar with. If you’re new to fantasy, write fantasy fic. Or a mystery novel/show, thriller, comedy, satire, adventure, what have you. The nature of fanfic still gives you those “guardrails” and you can get some brutally honest feedback on how you’re doing.

And, of course, the realm of M-rated romance and smut fics. I haven’t because I think I would die of embarrassment if I tried and I never intend to include sex scenes in my works anyway, but if you do want to, use the internet as your test audience. Post it on a throwaway account if you’re nervous.

Build that self-confidence!

The fandoms I used to write for are super dead, so it’s insane how I still get email notifications that so-and-so liked my fic to this day. Comments are as elusive as ever, but random strangers on the internet telling me they liked my work is a magical reassurance that my writing isn’t actually awful.

Random strangers on the internet are, as we all know, beholden to no moral obligation to be kind to your little avatar face, or be kind to be polite. So a rando taking the time to like my work or even leave a positive comment can feel more honest than one of my friends telling me what they think I want to hear.

I tend to avoid the more present aspects of fandom like online communities, forums, social media, what have you, so I get a delayed and diluted aspect of any given fandom through completed works. Which means, in general, I get to avoid the worst and most toxic aspects of fandom and get to sift through positive feedback and critique.

Even if your fanfic isn’t written with stellar prose, it’s fanfic. We don’t expect Pulitzer-prize winning content. And if your work isn’t up to snuff, people are more likely to just ignore it than put you on blast (at least in my experience, I never got a bad comment or a “flame” in the old FFN days).

Fanfic doesn’t care about the rules of published literature

On the one hand, try not to practice bad habits, but with this point I mean that your layout, punctuation, formatting, paragraph styles, chapter length–all of it is beholden to no rules. I get as annoyed as the next reader with giant blocks of paragraphs, or the double-spacing between pages of single-sentence paragraphs, but if the story’s good enough I might ignore it.

There’s more than just straight narrative fics, though. People write “chat” fics, or long streams of text and group chat conversations. The scene breaks can come super rapidly–I’ve seen fics with a single sentence in between line breaks to show the passage of time. And without the polish of a traditionally published novel, I’ve never seen a purer distillation of author voice in any medium more than fanfic.

All practice is good practice

Even if it’s crack fiction, or a one-off one-shot, or something meant to be lighthearted and straightforward and free from complex worldbuilding and intricate plots. It really helps break writer’s block when you can shift gears and headspaces entirely and you can get relatively instant feedback to keep you motivated.

Beyond that, the “guardrails” help you stay consistent as far as character growth and personality if you struggle with designing rich characters.

The most recent fanfic I wrote was just a couple years ago, for a dead fandom I didn’t think would get any traffic whatsoever. It wasn’t my original works, but the feedback on that fic gave me the kick in the butt I needed to get back into writing more seriously.

In short, I support fanfic. I may not be proud of my earliest fics' prose now, but I am proud that they walked so I can now run.

Unnecessarily long rant post about various tcc related things

I like actually hate tcc selfships so much, I don't care when people say freaky shit about tcc people cause most the time they're joking and I do it too. But like genuine selfships, like drawing themselves or an self insert or an oc with tcc people (what am I even supposed to call them)

Like I hate seeing those blogs where it's like "Dylan's little girl >.<" (extremely directed, you know who you are..). Or like drawing themselves with their favs (in a not joking way), even edits and "___ x oc/reader" fics. Theres another person on TikTok who makes edits of them x Andrew blaze, it makes me so mad cause I think im finding a cool edit and then I get flash banged with some randoms face.

Also I really don't care for the "well what if they're coping, this is a coping mechanism" argument like no, I don't care, cope some other way WITHOUT SHIPPING YOURSELF WITH KILLERS. Having a crush or intrest in a tcc person is okay but like genuinely shipping yourself with them is lowk kinda weird. Cause like I hate seeing people ship themselves with Eric or Dylan (in a serious sense, not a stupid funny haha) and they're everything Eric and Dylan hate. Like I hope you know they would've shot you if they knew about that

The selfshippers are usually so annoying too, like "ohemgee!!!! Don't say that abt Dylan he's mine!!1!1!1!" And then you get doxxed or some shit, like please go outside and touch some grass. Half the time they're greasy as hell or those "ohmigod I'm such a femcel lol!! >__<" just bcuz they're tcc and a female whose just a little different.

It's a little different with movie tcc people, like Andre and Cal because they are fictional and didn't actually shoot up a school. Even those ones are on thin ice, but I don't see as much of them luckily but I do see a lot of shitty Caldre.

Shitty Caldre as in Calvin is suddenly a AuDHD he/they shy femboy and Andre is a big tough guy whose actually secretly a big softie for cal and they go on little dates. Like no oh my god you clearly did not watch the movie, the only way I think of them as "dating" (using this VERY loosely) is them just being normal teenage boys, like when guys their age flirt because they're close friends. Sometimes a little bit of Caldre is okay but only when they're properly displayed the same way they are in the movie. Same with dylric, they were just close friends and had a distaste for gay people (from what I know) and I don't really know how to feel about dylric, but anytime I see one of those "Eric and Dylan kissing and being gay boyfriends >___<" posts I cry a little.

Plus the bad headcanons attached to both pairings, like I just wanna rip my hair out everytime I see one of those long headcanon posts and there's not a single good one, it's always like the "when they cuddle.." things. If I'm gonna take time out of my day to read a headcanon sheet it better be good, or bad fanfics like why am I even reading this. Sometimes bad fanfics are good but it's always the like 100-500 word ones that make me want to peel off the first layer of my skin, cause you can tell what kind of person is lurking behind that screen, it's probably some 11/12 year old that found out about zero day but never watched the movie. I feel like sometimes most people in the zero day fandom never watched the movie, also personal opinion I don't think that Andre self harms if I'm being so real here. Like I get where they're coming from with Cal but I don't get it with Andre.

I also don't like the people who dress like Cal and Andre, I own the shirts and sometimes I wear them but I never genuinely dress up as them, I usually wear them around my house, it's more of a "oh no I have no clean laundry" and I just have to wear it. But like people who go into full cosplay, like I saw someone genuinely buy a wig for it, like please ohmygyat. It just feels like seeing a columposer and I have a hatred for columposers, like tell me why you thought it was a good idea to leave your home in a wrath or natural selection shirt, like Columbine isn't underground, it was a real national tragedy.

Liking Columbine is fine as long as you aren't doing anything weird or harmful, but I feel like dressing as them puts you in both categories. But they always think they're so cool, it's always the most basic Columbine fans. They always listen to KMFDM or Rammstein and if they're trans (9 times out of 10 they usually are) they go by Dyl or Dylan. Plus they just take all of their personality from Eric and Dylan, it's always those intro posts that are like "name: Dylan music: KMFDM drink: Dr Pepper".

Please get a real personality oh my god 😢😢 cause I see like 20 people like that a day, please can we get some originality in this community. But the kind of columposers I hate the most is the ones that think they're the next Eric Harris, like calm down edge lord you're 14... they're manifestos always sound the same like "I hate everybody..... nobody understands me... they're all gonna feel my wrath... I'm gonna be worse than Eric and Dylan could ever be... mwhahahahah..." like shut up oh my god. You are not Eric's top guy bud, then they own a natural selection shirt and when they try to actually shoot up their school they just get caught cause it's always the people in private school trying to be the next Columbine. Like it's not my fault you live in the suburbs chill out.

It's so annoying to come on this app or look at the news and it another retard who thinks they're the second coming. And I have no shame admitting that I hate that Samantha chick, she honestly seemed so fucking annoying. And I hate the stupid "ERM... if you hate her you're misogynistic..." like what 😭. Just because she's a girl doesn't mean I'm a bad guy for hating her, I wasn't thinking about her gender when I decided I hated her ass. There's a new case every week, she's not special. She honestly was the worse thing I've heard about, everytime I hear about her I want to gouge my eyes out, she was just a supreme edge lord who thought she could be Eric. She thought she was so special for hating women like she wasn't a woman, like how fucking stupid are you, plus it's kinda pathetic how she only killed two people (all respect towards them) and then just killed herself, like oh my god at that point just kill yourself in your own house.

I also know the argument of Adam being a columposer is gonna come up, like "how are you gonna say you hate columposers but you worship one". Like yes I'm aware of the fact his shooting was "inspired" by columbine but he was also delusional as hell, like he was an autistic schizo that didn't leave his house. There was a lot more going into that shooting than just Columbine in mind, I don't really think of him as a columposer because it was a lot of psychological issues as well but I get where people are coming from when they say he's a columposer.

But still on the topic of Samantha and her being a woman hater, I just fucking hate femcels, not real femcels but "femcels >___< 🎀" LIKE OH MY GYAT. You aren't a femcel you delusional creep, you're just a female on tumblr get over it, you aren't special. Theyre all the same too, I feel like all femcel accounts are run by the same person. Theyre always some cutecore shit and have micro bangs, they all look the same.

Being a femcel or just an incel is just being frustrated with the lack of sexual or romantic opportunity in their life, that is the dictionary definition. You aren't a femcel if you bedrot, like Columbine, tcc in general, cutecore, hate women or men, if you're just delusional, or a Sematary fan. I feel like no one actually knows what being an incel or femcel means and it pisses me off so much because it's like saying the sky is green. Like you aren't a femcel, there's literally men in your dm's and you have a boyfriend shut up oh my god. It's just so infuriating seeing people being wrong all the time, I hate when I see false information.

It just makes me so mad and that's what most of this rant has been about, I hate seeing people be wrong like you're wrong because this tcc person would've hated you so much. You're wrong because that's not how these people were displayed in the movie. You're wrong because you're not gonna be the next Eric and Dylan. You're wrong because you're not a real femcel.

I'm feeling weird about an interaction I had the other day, and I'm wondering if I could get... I dunno, advice, I guess? From the usual commenters here.

So, context is that three-ish years ago, I got hate-brigaded in the fandom where I did most of my writing, in a way that came out of nowhere, and also in such a way that I felt like I deserved it. I ended up deleting everything I'd made for that fandom off the internet just to make it stop, including nearly six years of an art blog. I got a reality check later from friends whose credibility I trusted a lot more than random strangers on the internet, and eventually reposted most of the fic (backdated to the original dates of posting), and do actually still post fic in that fandom (also backdated to avoid notice). I also post a couple of fics on that account that are not backdated where I write with OCs from the original fandom fic in other fandoms.

The other day, someone who had been working their way through kudosing my stuff in the old fandom posted a complementary comment about it on the most recently updated of the two fanfics that isn't in that fandom, said they liked my OCs in the original fandom fic, and asked if I'd ever be interested in writing about that original fandom again. I explained that I was still writing fic in that fandom, it was just all backdated because most people really did not seem to like what I was writing.

And they responded saying that was too bad, and asking my opinion about a character they love, noting that it's pretty obvious from my fic that I don't like them and wondering why. And, like, this was probably just someone who was looking for fandom connection... but the character they were asking about is one of the most popular characters in the entire fandom. Most of the people still actively writing fic in this fandom are writing about this character, so if they wanted people to engage with about this character, they had basically everyone but me to engage with. And the person who set off the initial hate brigade against me that lead to me deleting basically my entire internet presence for months had this character as their URL.

So in my brain, I immediately go, "bait, this is bait," and delete this person's comments, delete my one response to them, and lock down comments on all the works on that account. And I know, I know that's paranoid overreaction. Based on their kudos pattern, this person was clearly working their way slowly through all the things on that account, which is not something someone who was only there to bait me would do. The only slightly off thing they did was comment on an unrelated most-recently-updated work instead of one of the works for the actual fandom. Probably they didn't realize that most people have comment emails turned on and didn't know I'd see a comment if they posted it on one of the older works, and they definitely didn't know what asking that particular question would do to me.

But I just... don't know how to exist in a fandom space any more without intense paranoia. I want to keep writing these things that bring me joy, and I do, but I miss being able to have my comments open without fear. I miss being able to post to a blog that wasn't locked down from Tumblr search. I wish I could interact with ANY fandom these days—not just that original one, but any fandom at all—and not feel like someone is going to turn on me out of nowhere. I can't overstate how out-of-nowhere that hate brigade was: my average fic got maybe 2 kudos. My art blog had fewer than 100 followers, and on average I got like 5 notes. I still to this day don't know why the person who set it off had such a hate-on for me, because it was clear from some of the anons I was getting that they'd built up a hell of a litany of ills to pile on my head, while all being vague enough that I never quite got a clear picture of what they were accusing me of.

I know part of the solution is to grow a thicker skin, and to block frequently. And I've been working on that, I guess I just... thought I was doing a bit better at growing a thicker skin and not being reactionary and the other day's incident made it really, really apparent I'm not, and I don't know what to do about it, because apparently the therapy is not doing enough! (Not that my therapist understands fandom...)

Any advice?

I mean... it's PTSD or something of the sort. Treat it as such.

You should make an OC. Specifically a Spider-Sona. Like now. Preferably yesterday. [A MEDIUM-LONG essay about OC's, fanfiction, and how to enrich and better your writing skills in literally every sector. I feel like a lot of the time we get so caught up in posting and notes we forget that for many artists and writers on this platform - fanfiction is not the true end goal.

Many of us write and draw fanart for years -

But the fact of the matter is if you want to be an author someday, if you want to be a graphic novelist, an animator, etc, etc - You're going to HAVE to make OCs.

If you want to study English in college or publish books - you're gonna have to write an OC at least once. If not hundreds of times.

If you want to study art - chances are at some point you're gonna have to fill a portfolio with original pieces, including some of OCs.

If you want to do something with your writing, if you want to get better - or make a career out of your art, you HAVE to make OCs at some point.

And this is especially true for fanfiction writers.

You can get very very very good at writing in your specific fandoms, you may have the emotions of the characters on point, and the ability to describe the scenery.

But if you don't know how to create and design a character - if you don't know how to worldbuild, or come up with scenarios without the help of characterai and ChatGPT - you won't be able to write a book.

If you're an artist and you don't know how to draw an original character from scratch, how to match colors, how to draw certain skin tones, certain hair, wheelchairs and mobility aids, how to design a character from looks, to clothing - it's going to be so hard to expand your art outside of fanart. You'll always be beholden to the notes and popularity of your particular fandom.

Do it - even if you've never written or never draw before. Even better.

That's why I CHAMPION Spider-sonas so much. They're basically OCs on easy mode.

Can't write backgrounds yet? Here's a bucket on canon events to pick from? Can't draw faces? Blank mask with eyes.

Hell, if you're really really new about it - just pick a character and make a slightly different variant. Make a Hobie of your own, make a Peter variant. Make a Mary Jane variant. Pick a something you like and turn that into a character.

Can't write? Just fill-in the 'My name is [blank], I was bitten by a [blank]' script that Miles does. Can't draw, just draw out a basic shape of a body and color-out the suit, no fancy pose needed. That still counts!!

Make a self-insert. Make yourself fit into the story, design your suit, write out how you fight crime, how you'd act at the Society, meeting Miguel or Miles.

That's still character design, that's still worldbuilding.

We always hear people say 'Make art for yourself' and yeah that sounds nice - but people also misinterpret it.

Make art for yourself doesn't just mean making art that you personally like.

Making art for yourself also means making art that develops your skills even if no one gives a fuck. It's about making art as practice without the intention of it being 'completed', making OCs that never get used, drawing locations you see or writing a random ass short story then shoving it into your Google Drive forever.

Making art for yourself means making art that invests in yourself.

It means making art that interests you, challenges you, or helps you develop.

And making OC's helps develop your fanfic writing skills.

In may fandoms we begin to fall into these routine 'tropes' between characters and their personalities. This is usually known as the 'fanon' characterization.

Because when you have a set amount of characters and people, there's also a set amount of interactions and relationships between those people.

Writing OCs and having those OCs interact with canon characters allows you to dig deeper into sides of the canon characters we'd never otherwise see.

That's why I wrote Disco-Spider Diane like I do. Often, we see Hobie characterized as the chaotic, rowdy, confident type - which is perfect characterization for him. But in almost all of his interactions - he's the wilder, bolder, extroverted one. I wanted to put him in a situation where for once, he was the calmer one. I wanted to explore more grounded and chill sides of Hobie, one where he's the one grounding the other, and thinking logically - because in canon, we're hinted at a side of Hobie who's way more methodical and slow-paced and willing to stop and wait it out and play it off. And I wanted to see that. I wanted to explore what he'd do if he was faced with someone just as chaotic, who put on a cheeky ironic act - just the same as him.

Because no other characters serve that purpose in canon.

If there are elements of a character or concept you think are interesting but outright ignored by canon and fanon, you can create an OC to explore those parts.

For Disco-Spider: I wanted to explore how someone like a militant Black Panther would handle being Spider-woman, when Spider-people are usually shown as pacifists - what that would look like or how it'd shape her morals based on era, etc. For Inca-Spider: I realized there were so many culture based Spider people like Pavitr and Spider-UK. But none for indigenous communities, and NONE from countries that only existed in other universes. So, I created an indigenous character from Tawanti - a country that's located where Peru would be for us.

You can give a canon character a sibling, to explore how they'd interact with family. Give them a partner that acts totally different than their canon partner, write how that'd change the way they show love.

OC's make your original writing better, AND your fanfiction writing too. They can help you understand canon characters on a deeper level.

And sure, nobody likes your OC. NOW.

But every single character you write about, is someones OC. Every character you write about was once treated that way. Once upon a time, Dean Winchester was just some rando character in the pilot script of a show that hadn't picked up yet. Probably no one gave a fuck until CW picked it up.

The writers had to not only make him and develop him - they had to BELIEVE in him enough to pitch him to a TV show channel to make people care.

That's always the first step. Believing your character's story is worthy enough of being told and presenting it as such.

ESPECIALLY if your OC represents a demographic you don't see represented. Cause yes if there isn't any black women in canon then I'll Thanos this shit and do it myself.

Make OCs.

Write them. Draw them. Even if it's bad. Who the hell cares. Big Mouth is on Netflix with multiple seasons, have you seen that show?? 'Ugly' art is not a crime.

Make piccrews, fill out OCforms or take quiz's as them. Write little blurbs of them hanging with canon characters then post it in the tag.

You don't need a huge Spidersona sheet or a long long fic explaining their backstory. They can just be there.

MAKE OCs.

Make them to explore more in your fanfiction, make them so future you can write that novel or draw or that comic or sell those prints or whatever it is you plan to do.

Make it so your fanfiction AND original writing can grow stronger. It isn't just about notes and content and follows.

Make an OC. Make a Spidersona. Literally you have nothing to lose but your chains.

Oh they'll care when you pop out with that 6-book publishing deal. They'll care when you're designing big characters for movies. Cause that's how it happens. Watch.
