Day 13... and the topic was "draw something without any pencils". Now that one was a real challenge because I don't normally do that, although I realize people praise the effectiveness of such an exercise and I should do it more often. Just to safe though, I decided to draw (copy, not trace...) a screenshot from a game, which turned out fairly well.

I should draw more stuff from Atlas Fallen because I really like the aesthetic.

10. How do you deal with art block?

Ooh this is a good one! Usually I end up drawing the same character over and over. I draw less full bodies/full pieces and more sketchy stuff until my hand feels “loose” again and then I work back up!

I don’t think I’ve ever had very severe art block, and I maintain that sketching in multiple medias helps you not get stuck :)) having a physical sketchbook that I can draw as many floating heads in as I want helps a lot. Also keeping a varying tool set! I draw with any and all office supplies I can steal permanently borrow from work.

11. Have you ever drawn a meme with your OCs or canon characters from a fictional media?

SOOOOO MANY!! Back in my Star Wars heyday in 2020/21 I drew a million texts posts. They’re mostly on my insta, because I hadn’t figured out tumblr for art yet. Why do we need to fight over the ATLA remake?

I joined tumblr less than a year ago, and when I did I was fully aware that it had somewhat fallen out of style, and that most people who used to use tumblr have moved on to TikTok and other platforms. The reason I did it anyway was because I wanted to find and interact with people who were passionate about the same things I was (whatever my hyperfixation of the moment is). When I don’t know anybody irl who gets excited about the same things I do, I can turn to tumblr to have thoughtful discussions, read fanfiction, and appreciate people’s beautiful fanart. It’s been a way for me to share and express my excitement with people that actually care.

So you can imagine my disappointment when, after watching and enjoying the new live action ATLA series on Netflix, I search the ATLA hashtag on tumblr only to find a lot of the top posts are people shitting all over something I enjoyed and was excited about. (Not that there aren’t some positive, but as with anything the haters always seem to be the loudest.) Now don’t get me wrong, was the show perfect? No, of course not. Was it the same as the original? No, of course not! It’s not supposed to be! And it pains me that people are so quick to talk about things that were negative and just brush off things that were positive. (Especially when we have that movie that doesn’t exist to compare it to…)

That being said, this post isn’t really about ATLA. I don’t care if people didn’t like the new series. Everyone’s entitled to their opinions. And I don’t care if people want to talk about why they didn’t like it or what they didn’t like about it. Hell, there may even be some points I agree with you on. What I don’t like is when people state their opinions like they are facts! You're allowed to not like the same things I do. But don't try to make me feel like I'm wrong for enjoying something you did not! I opened up that hashtag to share my excitement over something, and was very disheartened when all I saw was people saying “it’s terrible, and here’s why!”

It’s okay if you didn’t like it. But it’s also okay if you did! And the fact that I enjoyed the remake doesn’t make me any less of a fan of the original, and it doesn’t mean I appreciate the original any less. If you’re going to share a negative opinion, do it in a way that’s not going to hurt people who don’t share that opinion. (And that goes for anything, not just ATLA!)

Sha’vira says that she babysits the Eliksni kids because she needs the extra glimmer. Only Atlas knows that she refuses to let them pay her.

He saw her refuse payment from Eido a few weeks back and she had raised her chin at him defiantly, daring him to comment. He had just smiled and looked away. He couldn’t call her out on it. The nights he had spent with his Chaperone clutched in white-knuckled hands after the attacks on the House of Light’s ether supply wouldn’t let him.

Instead, he brings her ramen from his side job during his lunch break, and they sit shoulder-to-shoulder on the ground watching the small ones gleefully dart around, bouncing a purple ball with their little hands. They swap stories about their travels, the gods they’d fought together, the lives they’d lived, the friends they’d made, and the ones they’d lost. He feels less alone with her, his best friend, his sister.

When they sit in the Eliksni quarter, surrounded by crumbling buildings and smiling kids, Atlas feels like he doesn’t have to carry the weight of the world alone.

After all, the light provides, and so too will they.

there’s this sort of trend on tiktok of people recreating/painting this painting, fallen angel, which you’ve probably seen before. i decided to paint azula as the fallen angel because why not? i hope you like it, it’s my first time trying digital realism. click for better quality!
