fuck it. shout out to "high functioning" neurodivergents
the ones who can mask easily, the ones who can get social cues, the ones who have managed to go most of their life not even knowing they were ND because they didn't present as the stereotypical ND person.
the ones who can pay attention in class, understand social etiquette, who understand societial expectations
the ones who don't feel neurodivergent enough bc they don't struggle in the same ways/areas a lot of NDs do, or they can't relate to other NDs' experiences because they always understood these things easily
the ones with high empathy, the ones who DO get the joke, the ones who are constantly told that they can't possibly be neurodivergent because they don't act like what you'd expect a neurodivergent person to act like.
you are neurodivergent enough. you are valid, and so are your experiences. not struggling as much as others do in some places doesn't mean you dont struggle at all. your condition and diagnosis is valid. your symptoms are valid. YOU ARE VALID. not checking all the supposed boxes doesn't mean you aren't neurodivergent. you are enough. you are valid. you are loved. you are valued. you matter. you belong in neurodivergent spaces, you deserve to use whatever resources are available to you, you are allowed to take up space in these communities. and i am so, so proud of you.
feel free to, and actually, i encourage you to reblog this with your experiences. we belong in this community as much as anyone else. please also tag this w/ any neurodivergent conditions i may have forgotten 💙
since this is getting lots of notes I'd like to add, even if you're undiagnosed or maybe self diagnosed, for whatever reason, (i.e. can't get access to a diagnosis, not being taken seriously, or just not wanting an official diagnosis, etc.) this still applies to you. actually especially to you folks. don't think for a second you're not valid just bc you don't have the paperwork or whatever to say it

You cannot call yourself a mental health advocate if you use "narcissist" and "psychopath" as insults.
You cannot call yourself a mental health advocate if you dont take self-diagnosed people seriously.
You cannot call yourself a mental health advocate if you expect mentally ill people to mask around you.
You cannot call yourself a mental health advocate if you put paraphiles in your dni.
You cannot call yourself a mental health advocate if you laugh at people for showing symptoms of autism.
You cannot call yourself a mental health advocate if you diagnose anyone you dont like with personality disorders.
You cannot call yourself a mental health advocate if you treat ADHD and OCD like personality traits.
You cannot call yourself a mental health advocate if you demonize people who aren't in recovery/don't want to recover
Your a mental health advocate, or your not.
You cannot pick and choose what's worth advocating for.

My doctor and therapist: now with this autism + ADHD diagnosis you need to learn to unmask because masking all the time will make you burn out again and feel like shit
Other people: well it's just interesting how after getting the diagnosis you suddenly start behaving like that I mean I'm not saying you're faking it's just funny how you suddenly cannot be normal like you were before

friendly reminder that late diagnosed does not innately mean low support needs. plenty of us just didn’t get adequate medical care as children due to a myriad of reasons (eg. abuse/neglect, poverty, parental neglect, school system failure, lack of mental health resources, medical neglect due to misogyny or ableism, etc.) but again—late diagnosed does not innately or intrinsically equate to low support needs. many of us were seen, and hell—some of us were even identified by professionals as being “potentially autistic”, or “showing autistic traits” and yet either never diagnosed or our parents never told us.

The only correct response to
“Talk to disabled people the same way you talk to children”
Should be
“Yes! Talk to them with respect in a regular voice, explaining things properly while still staying within a range where they can understand.”

“Ughhhh I hate the whole ‘/j’ thing!!! Autistic people aren’t stupid!! It makes me feel so invalidated… :/“
Dude. It’s fine you you don’t want to use them/tone tags aren’t useful to you. That doesn’t mean they aren’t useful to other autistic people.
Not every autistic person is as capable at understanding tone as you are, especially over text. Heck, a lot of allistic people don’t understand it over text. It’s not “invalidating”, you just can’t understand someone having a bit more trouble than you.

Do You Know This (non-canon) Autistic Character?
Tumblr media
Propaganda:
Non canon but there is a lot of evidence he is not neurotypical.
- He could be obsessed with any other criminal, but he focuses on Valjean. To the point that even though it's been 20 years, he will follow this man through a sewer to capture him.
- Stickler to the rules by the book and gives no sympathy to anyone. Whether this is someone who stole a loaf of bread to feed their family, or a violent criminal. Respects authority so much he rises the ranks of the French police to the top. Thinking he is the one in the right.
- His world view is very black and white.
- Lacks social skills to connect with the common man.
- When he thinks he made a false report on another man, he feels like he's commited such a great sin that he apologises to Valjean (who has a new life), and tries to convince him to report him for his crime. He has to be told it's ok/no need for that, for Javert to return to what he was doing.
- Has a superiority complex.
Any other details:
I have not read the book, but this is from my perspective from the movie and stage musical.

HAPPY DISABILITY PRIDE!
If you’ve been following me since 2018, you’ll know I've been pretty open about having autism and bipolar disorder. I even wrote a couple of chapters in my first simLit, Friends of Foes, to help raise awareness and encourage acceptance.
I’ll drop the links to those chapters at the end of this post.
Living with conditions that leave you vulnerable can be demoralising, especially when you have to depend on mental health or medical systems that don’t always treat you with respect.
So, I just want to say that this simblr is a safe space for anyone who feels alone or silenced. Your voice matters here. 💖
Chapters under the cut:

I hate how often some (typically abled) people will go “well, if you can’t [get a specific support], then what?” when it comes to disabilities. As if it’s a “gotcha” moment. And then act like you’re exaggerating when you answer that question honestly.
Disabled people often die from a lack of support. A lot of disability aids are not a luxury, but a basic need in order to live.
“Well what happens if—” people die. People hurt themselves. People hurt others. Disabled people don’t magically become abled if our needs aren’t met.
If a bedbound quadriplegic is caught in a housefire, and there’s nobody there to save them, they’ll probably die. They won’t magically become able-bodied out of sheer will.
If a nonspeaking/nonverbal autistic is denied access to alternative methods of communication, they’ll suffer in silence. They won’t spontaneously become capable of speech.
Disabled people are disabled all the time. Our disabilities don’t go away just because they’re inconvenient, or if we’re in danger.

Basically this is what they're wearing. The top part at least. People can also wear pants.
Tumblr media
Boots like this are also popular.
Here me out...
An autistic town located in a gloomy area like Alaska.
Everything's dark and misty, with only the stark green of evergreen trees to cut through the monochrome.
Everyone either works remotely, or works for places like the local library, school, or observatory. Social activities revolve around interests, if you're interested in biology, you join the local environmental group, or help out at the community farm.
Despite being so remote, the little town has many researchers as it actually supports autistic people.
The people of that little town have a reputation as reliable, but eccentric. Other neurodivergents are there too. Adhders work in conservation and for search and rescue. Accessibility is key in the town with an accessible tram system. Higher support needs people are able to live their lives to the fullest.
There is a massive archival library underneath the town, it also has the best mental health resources in the country. Its remote location means that corporations don't have a hold on the area.
People wear cloaks with hoods and masks to keep the chill out. Medium length hairstyles are popular, making it difficult to discern someones gender at first glance. People wear black eyeliner on their bottom eyelid to cut through the bright glare of the snow.
