or, well, not their existence, period. they're a valid health option that is best for some people, medically. but the sheer aggressiveness with which they're being pushed nowadays

the last few times I went to the eye doctor for my annual check-up, she was HEAVILY on my case to switch to dailies. like, to the point of arrogance and condescension when I said I preferred to stick with monthlies (I've worn contacts since I was 12, for reference). I also posted about it on a forum and got massive negativity in response, as well as being talked down to by someone claiming to be an optometrist himself

now if this were like...anti-vaxxer sentiment I'd understand that reaction. but from what I've heard, while monthlies do carry a higher risk of eye infections and such, they're not medically unsound or unsafe across the board. I'm willing to accept that risk, and since science has not found that they're terrible and should immediately be discontinued, I feel like my wishes should be respected and not belittled

point two: plastic waste. they say it's somehow less than using monthlies, but frankly I just don't see how that's possible. 365 of those little eye chips- times two! -and their packaging, add up to less than a case and a bottle of solution every few months, plus 24 contacts and their packaging? it doesn't make sense to me, and it doesn't help that I mostly see contact lens websites repeating this "fact." of course all contacts produce plastic waste, and I'd be perfectly willing to accept this as one of those You Have To Consume; You Just Decide What Areas Of Your Life Are Optimal For Minimization of Waste And What Aren't things, if dailies weren't being pushed so hard

(also I found two studies showing that monthly-replacement soft lenses produce less plastic waste than daily disposables. which, like. yes, this should be obvious, but here we are. granted, that's only two, and both studies emphasize that dailies and their accoutrements can be recycled, but see below)

some big companies have "contact recycling programs" but like. who's to say that's not greenwashing? where's the oversight? where are the investigations into what these programs actually DO? god knows we've been there before with recycling and corporations trying to pull the nylon-poly-blend Vegan Wool(TM) over our eyes

they're also more expensive than monthlies, which like. does not lend a positive slant to optometrists pushing them so stridently

on top of that, I and some other monthly users have noted that our contacts aren't lasting as long as they used to. for me, it was 17-18 years of smooth sailing with barely any problems, and as of like a year ago my contacts barely last two weeks without clouding up, ripping, chipping at the edges, causing my vision to blur, becoming uncomfortable...my brand did change around that time, so I hope it's just that, and the sample size of other monthly users I've pooled is VERY small. but it sure seems interesting that they suddenly started pushing a product that doesn't last long enough for people to notice low quality, around the time that at least some users of the longer-lasting version start having problems

Did Jack Barlow Know? If so, who else knew and how?

Okay, so hear me out! We know this likely means that either Andarna is linked to this mysterious weapon. We don't know if means she knows where to find it/activate it, if she is the weapon, or if a rider that bonded her species of dragon was what wiped them out. Either way, it's safe to say that it all relates back to her in some way.

We also know that Jack Barlow was a Venin before he crossed the parapet, right? And in Kaori's classes, he was very interested in Tairn. Then, during Threshing, his number one goal was to kill Andarna (which isn't smart given where he was). Also, by the end of Iron Flame, he was somehow controlling Baide. Not, seemingly, dissimilar to how Varrash described influencing a dragon instead of allowing it to influence you.

His interest in Tairn is most likely because he wanted to bond a powerful dragon for the Venin to use, or for him to control. He wanted to influence Tairn the way he did Baide, maybe even syphon power from him, and by proxy, Sgaeyl.

He was also weirdly obsessed with Killing Andarna during Threshing, which, at the time, just could be attributed to arrogance, disrespectfulness and self-centredness, which was on brand for him. But now that we know what he is, and what he was doing all along, it's safe to say there could be other Venin in the wards.

There's so much speculation regarding Violet's potential Venin heritage, from either her mother or father's side. Lilith's rank and position means that she and Violet's dad had been close to the hatching grounds for a while. Violet's father specifically was researching Feathertails, and he died one or two years before the start of the book, when Violet was about 18. What else happened when Violet was 18? Andarna. She hatched when Violet was 18, possibly before her father even died.

Who's to say how many other Venin there are within the Wards. There are likely to even be a couple, like VIolet's dad, that were within a four hour flight radius to said wards. If Volet's dad felt Andarna hatch, then any other near by Venin could have too. Going back to his research for a moment, it's worth mentioning, how would he be able to study Feathertail effectively? The only way for there to be information about them in his research that isn't common knowledge, is either, a) he had access to very restricted texts (like the King's personal collection), which seems unlikely, or b) to have seen a feathertail.

If nothing else, I think Andarna knows something of the research he did. Perhaps he even met her for himself. When Varrish was questioning Violet about it, Tairn confirms that he doesn't know about it, but Andarna? The author makes a point to tell us that she went silent. Not that she wasn't there, or grew uninterested, or even went to sleep. She was there, she was listening, but she didn't respond.

By now, I think it's safe to say that she knows something. Throughout the books, Andarna drops hints to her secrets, without outright saying them, or lying about them. She prefers lying by omission, which, towards the end of the first book, Tairn points out to her, can be just as bad. It still seems to be her preferred method of secret keeping, though. Like how she's not like the other juveniles, or how she'd be the head of her own den, all indicating that she really isn't. She's a whole other species, and already the head of her own den.

I think Andarna knows something about the Venin, and about Violet's dad, in which case, it's possible he also knew, somehow, that Andarna would chose Violet. I'm not sure how likely that would be, and would depend on how much Andarna knows of this research.

However, I'm confident that she's the key to stopping the Venin in one form or the other. I also think that, somehow, the Venin knows this too. Either through Violet's dad, who may or may not have had contact with Andarna, or knew of her, at the very least, or through another Venin in Basgaith.

So, finally, going back to Jack Fucking Barlow, the root of this discussion, did he know about all of this? We know he was sent to destroy the wards, but was hellbent on killing Andarna during Threshing.

Powerful dragons can tell what a hatchlings colour will be, before they mature. Is it possible that powerful Venin can too? If there was a Venin near the wards, powerful enough, would they be able to tell as well? It's possible that a Venin inside the wards reported back to a higher rank, about Andarna's hatching, or that a Sage or General to learn about the dragon hatchlings through other Venin, or people like Violet's dad.

If they did, then they could Know what Andarna is. They'd know how she's different, how she's the key to stopping them, and perhaps even the key to their victory. Could it be that the Venin sent Jack to, not only destroy the wards, but to kill Andarna before she became a threat? If the higher ups amongst Venin didn't know, then did Jack figure it out on his own, and do it to earn The Sage's approval? Based on how desperate they are to capture Violet for The Sage, they seem pretty obsessed with proving themselves. Jack might have wanted to become a strong rider to gain the acknowledgment or promotion from The Sage, and later decided to kill Andarna while he was at it.

It's possible that that's the reason that The Sage wants Violet so badly. If you can't beat them, join them. Or have them join you by turning the love of their life into a monster, and using him to kidnap or manipulate them into joining your cause because they're the biggest threat to you and your kind. Perhaps they want her to manipulate Andarna the way Jack did with Baide or Varrish claimed to do with Solas, since it was Andarna, or her kind, that ended the war 600 years ago.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⋆˚꩜｡⠀⠀⠀next, i have my ideas journal, once again from louise carmen. all my notebooks have to be refillable and be able to hold many inserts simply because of how much i write and use them. i always always bring my ideas journal with me because i never know when i will get a burst of inspiration or a random idea i don't want to forget. i have my wallet, obviously, it just has cards and emergency cash in them. also a pocket mirror and my lip combo: charlotte tilbury's lip liner in 90s pink, laneige lip balm in gummy, and dior lip glow oil in berry. i also carry around my two favourite perfumes in the world- carolina herrera's good girl perfume and glossier's you. also some l'occitane hand cream as always, i hate it when my hands get ashy. next are my two notebooks i use for university. i prefer taking notes down on paper rather than writing them on my ipad, and so i have my two notebooks from aspinal of london. one for each degree, i am a double honours student. the cream one is for my degree in sports and exercise science with physiotherapy and rehabilitation. the blue notebook is for my degree in culture and creative industries with literature, film, philosophy and politics. both vastly different degrees, but two i hold close to my heart. then, we have my necessities pouch which just holds sanitary products and power banks.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⋆˚꩜｡⠀⠀⠀next i have a cardigan, just in case i get a little cold, which doesn't happen much but i still carry one around with me. this one is from ami paris. then, i have a quarter zip jumper from ralph lauren if it is really really cold. i also carry a hair brush with me and my favourite watch from cartier. i also have a pouch for my charging cables just in case my laptop starts dying on me. i also have three reads, two for school and one just for my own enjoyment. there is the princess of 72nd street by elaine kraf, which is her final published work. next i have the image of her by simone de beauvoir- i have heard good things about her writing and that it just as rich as the auto-ficiton of annie ernaux. finally, i have right wing women by andrea dworkin which is an analysis of the impact of women on the right's position on a variety of topics such as abortion, homosexuality, and anti-feminism, and demonstrates the attempts to both exploit and quiet the fears of women.

The last piece

Summary: In desperation, you search for a set of wings to complete your last-minute Halloween costume. As you do that, you run into a man who seems to think you have more potential to you than a simple university party girl, and he’s dead set on having you join ‘Jujutsu University’- whatever that is… 

Pairing: Fem! Reader x Satoru Gojo Sweetober prompt: 1 Halloween costumes  WC: 3K Warnings: Cursing, alcohol consumption, hint at rude behaviour, bullying, suggestive content and relationship between teacher-student. 

“ I swear they don’t have them!”  

You huffed loudly, couched down into a squat, your hands frantically searching through the piles of plastic bags of the cheaply made costumes carelessly stuffed into the bottom shelf of the tiny pop-up store. You shuffled, reshuffled and pulled out some bags before stuffing them carelessly back into the shelf. Only to repeat the search cycle. 

It was an action that earned you the stink eye from the store attendant and the few other patrons who were patiently waiting for you to be done so they could have their go at the few remaining costumes. You didn’t care about the glares, the coughs aimed to get you aware of your surroundings or even the not-so-subtle comments that there were other people in the world beside you. Rather, you raised your shoulder more and pressed your phone closer against your ear so you could better hear your best friend's awkward, mock, sympathetic laugh,

 “I am telling you, they don’t have a single pair of black wings. I am not even hoping for bat wings at this point; any wings will do. Just give me the frame, and I’ll fix the rest! But they’re cleaned out: NADA, not a single one!”

“Well, then it sounds like you’ll be going in one of those shitty off-brand get-ups. So what will it be, hun? Slutty nun? Slutty pirate? ohh ohh maybe slutty vampire?” “What? And have Emelie and her goons rub it in my face all night? In that case, I may as well just not show up at all” Your voice came out whiny as you shoved the plastic bags away from yourself back into their draw. 

Your eyes filled with hate as you stared at them as though they were somehow at fault for your bad fortune- the leathery bat wings you had spent months creating, designing and sowing had been damaged during a water leak in your apartment. And no matter how much you dried and cleaned them, you couldn’t get rid of the sewer stench. With the Halloween party later that evening, your only other option was to take a ready-made wing frame and re-dress it into cloth and leather. It wouldn’t be fancy, but if you put more emphasis on your make-up and hair, you’d look classy enough. Maybe even like a bat.  

“C’mon don’t even joke-”“-If you’re done, wouldn’t it be nice to let others look? This store has the best costumes in town, and it’d be a shame to let them go to waste after all,” A male voice purred behind you in a playful yet rather rude tone with a touch of scolding to it. 

You jumped to your feet and spun around. Your lips were set into a surprised ‘0’. This was the first time in ages anyone was able to sneak up on you. This fact instantly put you on edge. You studied the man closely, from his snow-white hair and the black mask which hid his eyes to the dark blue uniform that made him look like he was a cosplayer, all ready for trick-or-treating despite being a decade too old for that. Then again, you weren’t in your teens either, so maybe the pot shouldn’t call the kettle black. He was tall, towering over you and looked rather awkwardly unfitting in the pop-up store, as if he and his long legs didn’t quite fit in the tiny space between your crouched down position and the fluffy fake wigs and fur behind himself. 

He was oddly out of place but also comfortable in it.

You released the breath you were holding and stood up. “Whatever”, You huffed as you moved to walk past him, purposefully bumping your shoulder against his. You heard his sharp intake of breath, a murmur ‘interesting’ followed by a stand turning over. You grimaced, a stab of guilt coursing through you- you hadn’t meant to make him stumble or turn something over but you pushed the unpleasant feeling down and just rushed out of the store. 

Lingering behind would only embarrass you further. 

“Okay so there’s one last open gimmicky store, and you should make it before closing time, so you start by going left..”  

Your best friend's voice on the phone was a welcome distraction as your feet carried you down the street away from the commotion you caused. You disregarded the guilt, focusing on a prayer instead. You knew you didn’t deserve divine intervention but you still prayed to whatever god- or demon- that would answer that you’d be able to save yourself from humiliation at the party. You just needed to find a single pair of wings in the last store, that was all. Surely, it is not too large of a request to ask for. 

Apparently, it was; luck, god and the devil were not at your side as you left as the day's last customer. There were no wings in sight of any kind, and the only remaining costume in your size was an overpriced Harley Queen version from Suicide Squad. Mini shorts, fishnets, a torn a little too short t-shirt and a flimsy rain poncho they dared call a jacket. You had to buy a baseball bat, accessories, and heels separately. 

It was an impulse buy full of desperation. Which you regretted the second you stepped out onto the warm afternoon street. But as you heard the store clerk lock the door behind you, you knew the chances of you being able to return it were beyond non-existent. 

“Why such a disappointed face? Want a lollie or something?” It was that male voice again that seemed to pop up out of nowhere. This time he wasn’t behind you, but rather beside you, arms full of bags from different stores; Halloween pop-up store, candy store, Daiso, and a cheap (candy?) pair of fangs poking out of his mouth. 

Before you could respond- be it in apology for shoving him into a stand earlier that day or accuse him of stalking you-  he reached into one of the bags and the next thing you knew, a plastic headband with giant eyeballs, with googly eye irises and fake blood all over googly eyes tied to long spring wires which bounced in all the direction, made it to your head. 

You gaped at his audacity. 

The man merely grinned in response. “Because that’s what you youngsters like, right? Gory creepy things. If not, I have cat ears and pumpkins as well.” 

You stood stunned for a moment, not knowing what was more insulting, a man close to your age calling you a youngster or the audacity he had to put that ridiculous headband onto you. Either way, you reached up and ripped the headband off your head, messing your hair up completely. “How would I know?! I’m not a ‘youngster’,” you snapped back, throwing the accessory at him. 

You saw it hit the ground in front of him and turned on your heel. “Aj aj aj, aren’t you at least going to give it back to me politely? I’ve gone out of my way to do something nice for a stranger, even after she shoves me into a stand” His voice is lighthearted like he doesn’t actually expect you to respond to him. 

But your steps falter, your cheeks flush pink, and the twitch of guilt is back. 

You knew he was, at best case, jesting and, at worst, manipulating you. But you couldn’t deny his words. You did act incredibly rude towards him just because you had terrible luck, which turned your panties in a twist- with no fault of his. Damned guilt. 

Turning on your heel, you walked back to where the Halloween diadem with plastic eyes lay on the ground and picked it up. Another step and you were in the white haired man's personal space. Then you slam it in the only area of him not covered in shopping bags- a part of his upper chest. You feel the silky material of his uniform and the tense rock-hard muscles, and you see the unmistakable grin on his lips. As if he had won the lottery. “Interesting. You’ve got potential and-” 

“Thanks, but not interested; try a pick-up line that isn’t licked off the internet” You cut him off, then turned back around and walked away. You tried to keep your head held high and your expression neutral, even as his laughter echoed off the street walls.

Clearly, he found whatever you said ridiculously amusing. 

Although you found him infuriatingly intriguing, you forced yourself to stop thinking about him the second your best friend called you up about the latest update on the evening's Halloween party. You were determined not to let her know you had embarrassed yourself twice in front of the same hot guy. After all, the more you thought about the odd white-haired man, the more you were sure you would never run into him again. And if she found out how you behaved, she’d never let you live it down. So you just listened to her rant and rave while you headed home with just enough time to grab some dinner and make a few edits to the not-cheap-yet-cheap-looking Harley attire in an attempt to make it less last-minute obvious before it was time to head out. 

The time flew incredibly fast. 

The Halloween party was held at one of the largest party buildings on campus. Normally reserved for formal events, it was completely re-decorated into several floors of madness. Fake cobwebs hung from almost every corner; the windows were tinted; some were completely black with white sticker ghosts stuck on them; others had cutouts of bloody handprints. Doors were replaced with creepy, cut or stained shower curtains, and Halloween-inspired Rave and Techno music pulsed through every floor, from pumpkin smashing in the cellar to the corridor of horror in the attic. It was the biggest and longest party of the entire year. 

As you stood beside your best friend at the drinks table, inches from the semi-packed dance floor full of zombies, witches and vampires, ‘you felt oddly out of place. It wasn’t that your costume stood out amidst the hundreds ‘sexy’ characters: nurse, maid, pirate, clowns and such. It was that it was too generic; there were at least six other almost identical Harley Queen and as the sevenths walked in through the door, you felt your patience hang on by a thin thread. 

The thread grew thinner as you saw Emelie and her group enter as if they owned the entire party. The Childhood-friend-Emelie-who-you-knew-since-kindergarten-but-who’s-mommy -remarried-rich. The one who got her precious popularity by trampling all over you and your image; if she made you the scapegoat and the butt of the joke, no one would have the time to question her and her new money. No, a once friend had become a part of the typical rich girls and guys who thought they were better than the rest of the world because they could wave their daddy’s credit cards. 

You hated them about as much as you were jealous of them. Even if they took it upon themselves to rub it in your face whenever they could, how much better they were than you. Or, their new favourite tactic: reminding you how much you didn’t live up to your own image. You saw them stare you up and down and felt your face flush in the darkroom as they whispered among themselves. 

A daughter of a seamstress who turned up in a cheap-bought costume. 

You saw them make a be-line for you, moved through the crowds that parted for them like the sea for Moses. Inevitably, you knew they wouldn’t let you live it down. You gripped your best friend's arm, a signal that it was time for you two to get out. But she stood frozen in spot. Even as Emelie and her friends appeared in front of you and your best friend, she didn’t bat an eye, ignoring their snarky jabs until they finally looked somewhere behind you. Instantly, their expressions shifted from sadistic to almost flirty. 

You brought the glass of punch to your lips before turning your head toward the door. As your eyes landed on a tall man with white hair, black glasses and a more casual get-up of a white shirt, black pants and a cloak- the only ‘Halloween-y’ thing on him, you almost dropped your punch. His eyes landed on you, and he reached his arm up and obnoxiously waved in your direction.

If you hadn’t noticed him before, you sure as hell did now. 

He made sure he was impossible to miss, after all.  You turned away with a roll of your eyes, but not before you heard his voice cut through the brief silence between songs; “Heeey you never gave me your number, little violent Harley!”

You blinked, then ducked your head down as half of the dance floor turned to face you. 

“You know him?” your friend gasped, and you timidly shrugged your shoulders. 

“ Is he famous or something?” You asked your best friend, who slapped your shoulder with such force that you gaped at her. The look she gives you is as if you’re the stupidest person on earth. Literary. “That’s Satoru” The name didn’t ring a bell. “Satoru Gojo” Oh old money. Now you understand why half of the student body is glaring at you. Why Emelie looked at you like that. The look in her eyes that so obviously said you weren’t even worthy to be in the same space as him. Let alone speak his name or act as ignorant as you did. The look on her face was full of promises, barbed words that would cut deeper than ever before, a promise to promise to drag your image through the dirt even further until you would never recover–

“There you are!” You felt his arm wrap around your lower waist, purposefully following the outline of your skimpy shorts. His long fingers just barely brushed against your bare side; close enough for you to feel the warmth of his hand, but too far away for it to be gravely inappropriate to touch a stranger. It seemed he settled for just slightly inappropriate in this case. You saw his blue eyes flicker between you and Emelie before turning back to you. “It’s stuffy here, lets head outside.” 

Like a knight in shining armour, he ‘stepped in to help you’ while trapping you between a rock and a hard place; you could either dismiss him again and be left in Emelie’s clutches or you could step outside like he wanted you to but causing a sea of rumours in the process. 

Either way, your reputation wouldn’t be the same. 

You nodded and followed him out, the attention you two caused creating enough commotion for your friend to sneak away elsewhere unnoticed. Once outside, he didn’t stop walking but dragged you further and further towards the dark campus grounds until the pounding music was just a light hum in the background. You breathed a sigh of relief before nerves set in. By reflex, you brought the plastic cup of punch back to your lips, but before you could take a sip, he yanked it out of your hold with his free hand. 

“You’re too young to be drinking this” Gojo scolded, taking a large clunk of your alcoholic beverage.

“Hey, I’m of age to drink!” you proclaimed and reached for your cup. He took another clunk before raising it far above your head. 

Damned tall bastard. 

“Just because you’re of age doesn’t mean you should!” the way he said it made you roll your eyes and you made a sudden jump towards the cup. The hand on your waist tightened, supporting you as you jumped and jumped until you finally wrapped your hand around the rim of the plastic cup and yanked it out of his grip. 

You brought it to your lips, a victorious grin, only to realise it was completely empty. “You downed the lot?!” 

Gojo laughed, a sound that didn’t sound mocking or malicious. Maybe it was the alcohol getting to your head, but it sounded almost.. Flirty? As if he read your thoughts, he stopped walking and leaned down closer, stopping inches away from you. You realized his eyes were pretty and that he smelled of alcohol, the fruity, sweet smell of punch that barely hid the sharp tang of alcohol. He was hot, and he knew it, and if that wasn’t enough allure, he was old money. The concept of ‘no’ did not exist in his vocabulary- and it showed.

“Come study under me at Jujutsu University.” He said it so casually, as if it was the most honourable offer you would ever get in your entire life.

“I have a degree I’m working towards” You deflected. However, you were painfully aware of his fingers playfully moving a few inches up your bare waist, to the outlines of your t-shirt and then down again. 

“We’ll get you a more suitable degree” Gojo declared, and you swore his voice dropped lower into a quiet, seductive purr. “One where you don’t need to hide or be on edge all the time,” Gojo spoke as if he could see right through you, through the rude and almost aggressive facade created to protect your most vulnerable and fragile self. He spoke as if he could see you down to your very core, your fears and insecurities all laid bare for him. 

You wanted to lash out at him and tell him he had you all wrong. But the way he held your eyes with an amused twinkle in his own, the grin on his lips that promised nothing but mischief and adventure and the hot hand that never quite stopped moving had you reconsider. His hold on you was tight, demanding, warm, desirable. 

The implications and opportunities were unmistakable.  

You swallowed thickly; your eyes more boldly ran over his features- his hair, his face, up to his eyes, down to his lips, then over the edge of his shirt, lingered on the brand name you couldn’t pronounce, flickered down to the accessories you realized only looked cheap but were made of precious gems and metals, then back up again. You couldn’t help as your lips pulled up into a shaky smirk. “So, do all teachers at Jujutsu Uni hit on their students?”

 “Ahh, but you see my dear, what happens before enrollment; it stays before enrollment, don’t you agree?” He lowered his head a little closer, clearly noticing how your eyes travelled. He had you where he wanted you, not by any altruistic ‘love at first sight’ method, but he’d take what he could get. 

The kiss, when it came, was demanding. Still, you couldn’t help but kiss him back. After all, you weren’t about to disagree with your soon-to-be teacher. Your job was to make a good impression on him for some bonus points. Though, given the way his lips moved against yours, you were certain you already had more in your hands than just your admission covered.. 

When Gojo wants something, he gets it, don't you agree?

You’re in Indiana when you get the anonymous email about what Nick’s been up to in Chicago. It comes from a randomised address, a lot of letters, a lot of numbers.

You open it up and it takes you a minute to understand what you’re reading.

It’s a sexual harassment lawsuit that’s been launched against your ex-husband by one of his med students. You scan through it and your blood runs cold because the things he’s alleged to have said, to have done. They are 100% Nick Hayes.

You read the documentation again and your heart sinks because you know which way this case is going, you’ve seen it before when it comes to men in positions of power. Nick is going to drag this poor kid through the mud and come out better for it. The complainant will probably be branded as ‘difficult’ to work with and end up being bullied out of her career.

This kind of shit it pisses you off, especially when it’s something that’s been going on right under your nose.

You think back to all your previous interactions since the divorce. Him turning up at the same places that you are, the lingering touches after a few drinks, how he knew all the right words to say to get you back into bed. All of them little ways of keeping you under his thumb so he can threaten his victims with his own lawsuit if they told anyone. That’s what he did according to the documentation, used your name to invoke fear.

Your hand is shaking when you pick up your phone to dial the number of the man just down the hall. The firm you work for has several in house private investigators and you’ve been friends with Jason Crouse for long enough to trust him with something of this magnitude.

“What happened?” He asks, his expression full of concern when you open the door to your hotel room. He’s dressed in grey jogging bottoms that ride low on his hips and a faded blue New Jersey Devils t-shirt.

You don’t speak, you just point at the laptop and he removes his black rimmed glasses from where they’re hooked on the collar, placing them on his features. He sits down at the computer to read, a lock of his dark hair falling across his forehead.

“They’re gonna dismiss the complaint.” He says finally, his hazel eyes flickering up to meet yours over the screen. “Why did they send it to you?”

“We’ve been hooking up.” You tell him frankly, rubbing your hands over your exhausted features. “We kept running into each other at the same places every time I was in Chicago.”

Jason’s jaw tenses, his dark brows furrowing into a frown as he takes in this new information. He knows your history, your son, Nick, all of it. He understands the connection there, the nostalgia of it.

“Can I see your phone?” Jason asks you holding out his palm.  You pick up the device, entering your passcode, the date of your son’s birthday before handing it to him. His mouth sets in a grim line as he studies the apps, one in particular that’s hidden under the calculator folder. “There’s tracking software on this, you want me to get rid of it?”

You aren’t surprised, things started to slot into place just before you called Jason. You shake your head as he hands back the phone. “If we do, he’ll know there’s something up and I don’t want him to get an inkling that I know about this.”

“Gracie.” Jason says, his New Jersey accent thickening as he drawls your name. His large hands encompass yours, gentle and reassuring. “Are you in danger from him?”

“No, he’s not violent. Just a manipulative asshole.” You say softly as his thumb gently traces circles across the back of your hand. “I need you to look into this this for me. I want you to gather as much evidence as possible and make sure it ends up in the hands of Sharon Goodwin.”

Judging from the practised way Nick targeted that girl, you can bet there’s more. It was probably going on before the divorce, even before your son’s death. That thought, it sickens you because it makes you glad your child isn’t alive to see this version of his father, to discover how much of a predator he really is.

“You want a reckoning.” Jason says, the edges of his mouth tipping up into a feral smile as he meets your gaze.

“Yes.” You say forcefully. “I want to see the bastard bleed.”

His cuts have healed up for the most part, although he’ll have moments where he relapses and cuts at them again. The ends will also sometimes tear if he does something like laugh too hard.

Very touchy with other people, but he despises being touched first. He prefers to initiate physical contact- both because of the control aspect of it and because of his general distrust of others.

His sense of humor waxes and wanes from extreme condescension to the most morbid sentences you’ve ever heard. Half of the time it doesn’t even sound like a joke.

I feel like his favorite band would be Tool or Slipknot. His music taste is just metal and dad rock.

Was brought up in a Catholic school for most of his life, although he obviously doesn’t keep up with the practice anymore. This is a big catalyst for why he develops a god complex however since he “has authority over life and death”— something unique only to gods from what he was taught.

Very observant of the people around him. He memorizes speech patterns, demeanors, even the way people walk. He’s gotten to the point where he can read people and their intentions well before they’re explicitly stated, making it much easier for him to spot a lie. However this also makes it much easier for him to tell when he’s truly pushing somebody’s buttons, and there’s nothing he loves more than pushing people past their limit.

Always stealing glances of himself in any mirror he walks past

He’s an opportunistic killer. Limiting himself to patterns clashes with the creativity and the thrill of the moment to him. However, there are specific elements of a kill he will often repeat if the mood strikes him. An example of this would be often including strangulation (albeit usually not the direct cause of death) to reflect his acquired need for control in all moments of his life. Sometimes he will also pose bodies in a “prayer” position to call back that god complex I mentioned.

He doesn’t always kill people immediately. If someone catches his eye, usually because he finds them beautiful in some aspect, he’ll take it a step further. He has no problem with being patient when the situation arises for it- stalking the person, learning their habits and schedules, the whole shebang. He’ll then slowly start to ruin said person’s life, isolating them through the slaughter of those closest to them and destroying any sense of peace and security they once had. He’s the sound that goes -bump- in the night. He’ll toy with his food until he eventually grows bored, disposing them like all the rest. After all, how dare someone else try to be beautiful in his presence- a punishment of the highest order is necessary.

His anger can be very… explosive. He doesn’t stick around very long for enough people besides victims to see it, but it can be as unpredictable as his own kills. It’s worse when he’s silent in his anger however, since with the former you at least have enough of a warning to brace yourself.

Backstory-Centric HCs:

Takes place in college. Jeff is 22 at the start while Liu is 20.

Instead of being a one-off instance, Jeff and Liu have been subjected to bullying/borderline harassment since middle school. This builds up Jeff’s gradual distrust of others and leads to him shutting himself off from his peers.

Most of said bullying revolved around their mixed race situation. It only got worse as Jeff shut himself off and Liu became a people pleaser.

The two didn’t even have peace at home, since their parents were sexually abusive and excused it through their religion. It was “all apart of god’s love” as they said. This + the bullying leads Liu to develop DID and kickstarts Jeff’s resentment towards their parents. It also led Jeff to develop a twisted belief on what love and beauty is since god apparently “favored” the beauty of his parent’s form of “love.”

On one particular instance of bullying/harassment, a small group of people he grew up with planned on jumping and mugging Jeff behind a bar. Things escalated when Jeff retaliated in self defense, beating his aggressors with a nearby pipe found laying against a dumpster. He didn’t leave unscathed however, since one of the attackers dropped a lighter into the flammable materials (alcohol, trash, etc) that had been scattered in the fight, planning on making everyone go down in that moment. Jeff managed to survive (albeit with severe burns along his body) after being found by an employee who went to go check out the noise/smell of smoke, but the others succumbed to their wounds.

While in a heavy state of shock and psychosis (paired with being drugged up out the wazoo at the hospital) his usual unchecked auditory hallucinations worsened, leading his mind to trick him into believing this situation was a sign from god- that he was supposed to survive while his tormentors burned. Paired with his already twisted concepts of love and beauty, he began to believe that his burns were part of god’s plan to make him more beautiful- because he was favored.

This only gets worse when he’s released from the hospital’s custody due to a neglect in checking his mental state. After being sent home with his family and therefore being thrown back into the abusive environment he hoped to escape when going to college he ends up experiencing a psychotic break, mutilating himself in the process.

When his parents catch him, they attack him. In their eyes he had disgraced them, no longer upholding the “beauty” of heaven that they enforced. He ends up killing them in self defense, but furthers it by mutilating their bodies in an act of defiance induced by his break. He believes he’s outdone god in this moment, deluding himself into thinking he’s on the same level (or even better) than god.

While overcome by his psychotic break, he ends up severely wounding Liu after he wakes up to check out the noise. It becomes a conspiracy on if Liu survived or not since his body was never found by authorities.

The reason why Jeff continues on his spree after these instances is the feel of control he gets. After being forced into submission by those around him for so long, he finally feels a stable sense of power over those he deems as less than him.

He ends up wandering throughout the states after this, hopping from town to town. He never stays in one place for long, although sometimes he’ll revisit his home town to give the urban legend fanatics something to fear again.

Swab, swirl, squirt, sit tight. By now, you’re likely familiar with the ritual of performing a COVID test at home or on the go. Disease detection has evolved swiftly since 2020, when you may have had to seek out a pop-up testing clinic or wait hours in line at your local health department, with clinicians on standby to stick a cotton swab up your nose.

Rapid COVID tests have since become a staple of cough-and-cold aisles across America, and just weeks ago the federal government resumed its periodic distribution of four free tests per household. But the convenience of self-testing comes with a caveat: The onus is on you to report your results.

First, know that test reporting isn’t mandatory in the U.S., so you’re hardly in hot water if you haven’t documented your COVID infection or lack thereof with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or state or local public health authorities. Though perhaps more people would self-report if it were a requirement, says Dr. Sujata Ambardar, an infectious disease specialist at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va.

“People probably are not self-reporting because they don’t want to have to not go to work—or they may want to go to work—it’s different reasons, and they may not want other people to know,” Ambardar tells Fortune. “Human nature is that they’ll probably only do it if they have to do it. Once you make it non-mandatory, then they tend not to do it.”

Today, if you get an antigen or PCR COVID test in a clinical setting, it’s still your health care provider’s job to report your results. While you’re well within your rights not to report your home test results, not doing so can come as a detriment to public health.

Between Feb. 1, 2022, and Jan. 1, 2023, an estimated 54 million adult COVID cases were unaccounted for in official records, according to a national study published Sept. 30 in the journal JAMA Network Open. That’s more than twice as many as those documented. At the state level, unaccounted infections ranged from 59,000 in Wyoming to 6.3 million in California. Researchers cited the government-led mass distribution of at-home tests as a possible driver of the discrepancies.

Report COVID results at MakeMyTestCount.org In theory, Ambardar says, reporting your COVID test results is “just one extra step.” But when that second line appears on the test card, confirming the disease has hit your household, formally documenting the outcome may not be your first priority. Even if you’re negative, you were likely feeling poorly enough to take the test in the first place and may not feel up to self-reporting.

But if and when you choose to do so, visit MakeMyTestCount.org to securely and anonymously report both positive and negative COVID test results. The site is a collaboration between medical data firm Care Evolution and the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, part of the National Institutes of Health.

MakeMyTestCount.org is free to use and doesn’t require you to immediately self-report. In fact, your results don’t even have to be recent. As of early October, the site allowed for the input of home test results going back to November 2021. If you need proof of illness for work or school, the site provides documentation. And while over-the-counter tests that screen for both COVID and flu aren’t as common as those that screen for COVID alone, you can report those results on the site, too.

Keep in mind that it’s just as important to report negative results as positive ones. The week ended Sept. 21, national COVID test positivity was 11.6%, CDC records show, down from 13.4% the previous week. If not for the inclusion of negative results, test positivity would always be 100%.

Depending on the brand of COVID test you’re using, you may not have to visit MakeMyTestCount.org at all. Some brands, such as iHealth, offer a free corresponding smartphone app. With the tap of your finger, you can forward your results to the CDC and/or your health care provider. If you have the time, notifying your doctor can help guide the course of COVID treatment in your community, says Dr. Donald Dumford, an infectious disease specialist at Cleveland Clinic Akron General.

“The more we know about the true number of cases of COVID, the better we’re able to understand the transmission of COVID at this point in time, as we go from it being pandemic to endemic, which means it’s just something we live with now,” Dumford tells Fortune. “It also helps us to identify the potential rise of new strains of infection, especially if you’re seeing a strong uptick in cases.”
