I don’t like when people ask how many books you plan to read/have read this year one because I think that’s a weird relationship to have to books and two because I think even reading a chapter or a portion of something is valuable. this is especially true with non-fiction but even with fiction I think any amount you read, even if you don’t read the entire thing, is not a failure or ‘incomplete’

#I read basically exclusively non fiction and every page I read is beneficial like I’m always learning something #like my relationship to reading is often extractive and utilitarian because of school and research #but that extractive process doesn’t require reading the whole text like 99.9% of the time #I’ve only read a third of Orientalism for example but like I have a good grasp of Said’s core arguments and concepts #and like part of how I finished authoritarian personality (a 1000 page book) was by skipping & skimming sections #like the whole is not always more valuable than its components #and also like ‘I read this book to complete it’ is not an insincere way to engage with a text but I feel like it’s limiting #if that’s your primary approach to reading. Like you read a book just to say you read it #& also more petty but I think that if your argument or thesis only works if people read 100% of your book then you’re doing a poor job #of getting your point across #again obviously it’s valuable to read and process whole complete texts not dismissing that but like #I don’t find a lot of inherent value in reading a book just to complete it u know

day dreaming about designing a better AIE voltage sensing dye (at the worst time, which is after I successfully made the original structure passed down to me and should be focusing on characterizing it rather than redoing the design)

This is the dye design I was handed four years ago and told to make and characterize in cell culture, which I just finished making...

but... I just think.... a) the naphthalimides on my dye aren't gonna do what the post doc who designed this said they would (inject current, bro its going to electroporate the membrane) b) it would be so much easier to solubilize in aqueous without bulky ass naphthalimide at the ends, we could even shorten the chains if we're not worried about cross talk between the naphthalimide fluorophores and the tetraphenylethylene core c) easier to characterize without competing cross talk from having TWO fucking fluorophores if I redesigned her without the naphthalimides.... and if I can shorten the chains too that would help with b). and if I reduce it to one chain, I think she'd ALSO be a better voltage sensor because d) the donor/spacer/acceptor structure (PeT wire, photoinduced electron transfer, i.e. the tetraphenylethylene donor/phenyl bridge/pyridinium acceptor structure) would be more parallel to the membrane potential and probably e) get uptaken into membranes EVEN MORE with a more favorable packing parameter (ratio of area of polar head to volume of hydrophobic body/tails) and f) have more noticeable AIE upon insertion into membrane/restriction of intramolecular rotation, which would reduce the necessity of wash steps afterwards to remove bg unbound dye

actually it'd be pretty easy to make the two chains version with one of the precursor molecules I have leftover............. maybe i could get some 1-bromo-octane or something for cheap and just make some anyway...............................................................................................

i am not anti-media-piracy, in fact i support it heartily on the media preservation level, and i have mixed but partially positive feelings about it on the individual choice/saving money level...

#its genuinely crazy the math and engineering that go into making these absolutely massive steam turbines #its an incredible balancing act to optimize between the interconnected variables of pressure velocity and temperature in order #to extract as much energy as possible from the steam as it moves through the system #especially like. those generators need to maintain a very precise rotational speed in order to prevent the coupled generator #from going out of phase with the power grid #(3000 RPM for 50 Hz grids and 3600 RPM for 60 Hz grids)#like the reactor part sounds like a lot of engineering work (and it is!) but like. the turbine is fucking incredibly impressive too #each one of those turbine stages needs to have very specifically shaped blades in order to control steam pressure drop and steam velocity #and the blades need to be able to physically handle being in a wet (at least for nuclear plants where the steam is pretty wet) high temp #environment and constantly being spun at high rotational speeds for decades at a time.#we had to develop specialized nickel titanium superalloys with tightly controlled crystalline structures in order to build turbines this big #stare into the depths of “wow we really just use steam to spin a big fan that sounds simple” and you encounter #the lifes work of thousands of mathematicians computer engineers material scientists and mechanical engineers #the first device we could call a steam turbine was made as a toy in tthe first century ancient greece and egypt #the first steam turbine with a practical use was described in 1551 in Ottoman Egypt. it was used to turn a spit of meat over a fire.#the first modern multistage impluse steam turbine was made in 1884 and revolutionized electricity generation and marine propulsion #in the 141 years since there have been more improvements than one could even list #from major design changes credited to great men to miniscule efficiencies and optimizations gained from tweaking the composition of an alloy #idk. i think its beautiful to think about the web of human knowledge woven collectively by thousands of hands across history #could you imagine what the ancient greek engineers who first put together the prototype for an aeolipile would think to see what we have #made now. could they even recognize our designs as belonging to the same category of object as their little toy #anyway #appreciate the humble steam turbine with the same eye you give to the reactor core #mine #just my thoughts
