Trying to actively lose weight while recovering from an eating disorder is literally the worst internal conflict in the entire world. Like I know for long term success and to be HEALTHY I have to do it the right way and do it slowly, but ED wants me to starve, ED wants me to purge, ED wants to get the weight off fast. But realistically I know that's not sustainable, and it's a miserable life. We DESERVE to eat, we deserve to enjoy food. If you want to reward yourself with an ice cream, that doesn't make you a dog, it makes you human, and as humans we are a pleasure seeking species. As someone I know who is the wisest I know says, "everything in moderation."

⚠️ TW: Eating Disorder ⚠️
My relationship with food has been suffering lately… As it typically does under heightened stress in the past.
I’ve recently caught myself withholding food for prolonged periods of time only to eat alone, in silence later. Might I dare say… only to binge later.
Today I told my therapist how I’ve been feeling lately and then I told her how the other day I forgot to eat all day because I was feeling anxious. And then before I knew it, it was 10pm and my stomach growled - my mind instantly went to an old version of me, the Lindsay who suffered from disordered eating and I told myself “it’s too late to eat.”
And so she asked me if I ate or if I went to bed… I went to bed. I went to bed hungry, the same way I’ve went to bed hungry so many nights in the past.
I’m not proud of this and I definitely don’t condone this type of behaviour. But I’m here to tell you that practice and progress are never guaranteed. Sometimes we slip up. Sometimes deep-routed issues come back to haunt you.
This time, I’m choosing to work through it instead of ignore it.

A PRAYER FOR THE LOST
You will NEVER win your battle over darkness without God. You have to be brave enough to let God hold you. To trust in Him when you’ve lost your ability to trust. Give Him your fear, anger, doubt, and shame when you’ve held on so tightly to them for so long. In short, you have to WANT freedom and peace more than you want anything else. Most importantly, you have to surrender, not to the world or…

Body size is NOT a disease. There are so many things that affect our well being! Chronic stress is a better predictor of whether somebody develops heart disease than weight is. And living in a larger body is STRESSFUL because of the rampant and socially acceptable fatphobia in our society. It’s not fat that kills, it’s fatphobia.
Weight loss is also often extremely dangerous. When we malnourish our bodies it jeopardizes our mental and physical health and can often be fatal. So, if we ACTUALLY valued wellbeing as a society, we wouldn’t be promoting weight loss as the cure-all.
The studies proclaiming the benefits of weight loss and the perils of fatness leave this out - weight loss is NOT sustainable. Also those studies are often written by pharmaceutical corporations selling weight loss drugs (that don’t work) for profit!! 😠THEY ARE GREEDY AND THEY FEED OFF OF FATPHOBIA AND US FEELING SHITTY ABOUT OUR BODIES! 😠
✨Dieting and weight loss goes totally against our brains wiring of KEEPING US ALIVE AND FUNCTIONING!✨
Weight cycling (when somebody loses weight bc they’re engaging in ED behaviors, gains it back because weight loss is not something the body can sustain and our survival mechanisms kick in when we attempt to starve ourselves, and then loses weight again bc society tells us that we’re failing as a human if we can’t lose weight and then the cycle repeats) is actually associated with a higher risk of death AND is associated with heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
📢 FATNESS IS NOT DANGEROUS, DIET CULTURE IS. 📢
ASK YOURSELF THIS QUESTION: who benefits from the idea that fat people are unhealthy?
ANSWER: the diet industry (mostly run by rich, white, cis hetero men) and literally nobody else
There is nothing wrong with you if you are struggling with an ED/if you want to lose weight. That makes TOTAL sense in a society that values thinness over all else. Knowing this stuff doesn’t necessarily make recovery any easier!

Recognizing the Warning Signs of Anorexia Nervosa
Tumblr media
Anorexia nervosa is a severe eating disorder that affects both physical and mental well-being. It is often misunderstood and can go unnoticed in its early stages, making awareness crucial for timely intervention. This disorder is characterized by an intense fear of gaining weight, an altered perception of body image, and extreme control over food intake. Below are some key signs that may indicate the presence of anorexia nervosa:
🔹 Distorted Self-Image Individuals with anorexia often have a deeply skewed perception of their body size and shape. Despite being underweight, they may see themselves as overweight and continue trying to lose weight unnecessarily. This persistent misperception fuels unhealthy behaviors and increases the risk of malnutrition.
🔹 Intense Fear of Gaining Weight Even when dangerously underweight, individuals with anorexia have an overwhelming fear of gaining even a small amount of weight. This fear leads to extreme dietary restrictions, excessive exercise, and other behaviors aimed at preventing weight gain at all costs.
🔹 Restricted Food Intake A hallmark sign of anorexia is severe food restriction. A person may drastically reduce their portion sizes, skip meals, or eliminate entire food groups from their diet. This restriction is not due to a lack of appetite but rather an intense desire to maintain control over their weight.
🔹 Excessive Exercising In addition to restricting food intake, many individuals with anorexia engage in compulsive exercise routines. They may work out excessively, even when they are exhausted, injured, or feeling unwell. Exercise becomes less about health and more about burning calories and controlling body weight.
🔹 Withdrawing from Socializing People with anorexia often isolate themselves from friends and family, particularly in situations involving food. They may avoid gatherings, refuse to eat in front of others, or make excuses to skip meals. This social withdrawal can lead to loneliness and worsen mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.
🔹 Intentional Vomiting and Other Purging Behaviors Some individuals with anorexia use unhealthy methods to rid their bodies of food. They may induce vomiting, misuse laxatives, or use diuretics in an attempt to prevent weight gain. These behaviors can cause severe damage to the digestive system and other organs.
🔹 Significant and Rapid Weight Loss One of the most noticeable signs of anorexia is drastic and unhealthy weight loss over a short period. This can lead to extreme fatigue, dizziness, and other health complications due to inadequate nutrition.
🔹 Constant Fatigue and Weakness Due to severe calorie restriction, people with anorexia often experience chronic fatigue, weakness, and an inability to concentrate. They may feel lightheaded, have difficulty performing daily tasks, and struggle with low energy levels.
Seeking Help is Important
If you or someone you know is showing these signs, professional help is essential. Anorexia nervosa is not just about food; it is a serious mental health condition that requires medical and psychological intervention.
