I actually meant it the sympathy way at first, but then your pedantic refusal to accept my concern for your misfortunes drove me to supervillainy
i actually get a bit annoyed with people who get a bit annoyed when people say “sorry” in response to their bad news. “why are you apologizing you didn’t do anything :/” like okay well a) you don’t know that and actually yes i am the secret architect of all your woes and have been this whole time, way to refuse to acknowledge a woman (gender neutral)’s accomplishments. and b) we’re both fluent english speakers so you know perfectly well that “sorry” isn’t always an apology and is very commonly used as an expression of general regret or sympathy. not in this case, because i have been your secret nemesis for years, meticulously plotting your every misery, but, like, in general

OP, thank you for making me question something I've done forever without thinking about it.
Photos of my handwritten ampersand under the cut.
Tumblr media
I'm thinking that an ampersand is more contextual than anything
Tumblr media
Not sure if it's related, but I was initially taught to write in cursive, and it's still my preferred way of writing – and a lot of those ampersand alternatives look like cursive letters.

Grammar PSA
the expression you're looking for is reining in. it is NOT reigning in. it comes from horseback riding.
you REIN IN your horse when you pull on the rein to tell him to slow down.
similarly, you GIVE HIM FREE REIN when you loosen your grip on the reins and let him run as fast as he likes.
that's where the metaphor comes from. you can rein in your evil vizier when he proposes a little too much child murder, or you can give him free rein when you need your enemies obliterated and only underhanded treachery will do. but unless he actually pulls off that nefarious coup he's plotting, the only one reigning here is you.

I came across the word "swaggereth" in a book from 1622 last night and felt like it should be shared with the world.
"Hee swaggereth, as though the whole Towne were his owne."
(source: Adagia in Latine and English, Erasmus, 1622.)

This is asking only about "a couple" as a general numerical measure, not as a relationship unit since that's a somewhat different meaning. For example, if someone said "I ate a couple crackers," would you take that to mean they had exactly two crackers?
We ask your questions anonymously so you don’t have to! Submissions are open on the 1st and 15th of the month.
