Cybertronian purring headcanons!

What exactly is purring? For cybertronians it is a continuous rumbling sound which sounds similar to a powerful, idling engine. Bigger cybertronians will generally have a deeper and lower pitched purr, but not necessarily a louder one. It’s many things: a response to happiness and other positive feelings, stress relief, a way to soothe oneself or others (especially when injured), a way to show one’s affection and trust. Although it can be done both voluntarily and involuntarily, purring is an emotional response. Meaning you cannot ‘fake’ a purr. It’s always genuine.

Where does it come from? Good question! In cats it comes from the vocal cords, in cybertronians however, it’s probably the engine. (Do they have engines? I still don’t know, but I would guess they do have something equivalent to an engine and that it’s a different than a spark. Maybe they’re connected organs.) This means cybertronians who do not speak, like Soundwave, can still purr. Must be embarrassing, accidentally breaking your vow of silence by making kitty cat noises.

Some cybertronians will purr they’re recharging given they’re in a secure place. If they don’t feel safe during a power-down, they won’t purr or vent excess heat. It’s a countermeasure brought on by the war, nobody wants to sleep in the middle of a battlefield and get attacked because your enemies locked onto your heat signature. (I think that’d be a genuine fear for some, especially those who have been on the front lines of the fighting. After the war, I imagine some cybertronians having trouble recharging because their bodies refuse to fully relax & do the heat venting thing, still paranoid.)

Recharge-purring is comparable to a snoring partner or relaxing train ambience while you’re trying to sleep, take your pick and there is nothing in between. A human would either fall asleep immediately or stay awake all night, depending on the day.

Meanwhile, I think it’d probably help other cybertronians rest better if someone in the room was purring. Cat purring can help a person heal and recover, it’s safe to assume the same would go for cybertronians.

I will post my specific purring headcanons about some decepticons later, and although I’m not that good at characterizing the Autobots I will do it if I get enough ideas.

This is a little less based in canon than my usual headcanons, but I think the idea of robots purring is Very Cute and I am going to talk about it. Perhaps I am cringe but I am free

I love how they handled cinderpaws injury in the comic here. none of that "she'll never be a warrior" without giving her the option to at least try. They also make it more realistic that she doesn't want to go back later by showing she gets scared of fighting during the broken attacking camp battle. If we get graphic novels for oots/pot (wich I really hope we get them for all the books now) I hope they cut the dumb reincarnation plotline somehow.

i know Shadowsight is described as small in the books, but I prefer to interpret him with the Tigerstar(tm) tallness with Dovewing's build, and that he tends to shrink down/lower his voice while talking to appear as meek/non-threatening as possible because his peers get nervous around him

he's probably used to gore and gritty stuff like that since he sees it often being a jujutsu sorcerer and all. not to mention his technique is literally blood. maybe he's desensitized to gore films, the most you'll get from him is a disgusted scowl.

BUT DID YOU SEE HOW QUICK HIS EYE OPENED WHEN HANAMI SHOWED UP BEHIND HIM. YOURE SO FUCKING FR ABT JUMPSCARES. Noritoshi is that guy who wouldn't scream or yelp but gasp really loudly and jump out of his skin.

i feel like they get him most in horror because of the music building up anticipation. if its one of those fake outs where the jumpscare comes a bit after, he's fucked UP. It makes him instantly miffed, as he tries to regain his composure. He swears he's not usually like this, it got him by surprise is all..!

Noritoshi is the type that'd only watch a horror movie if the story is rich and complex. He's the type of guy to like open endings that make you think.. if it's a guilty pleasure movie where all the protags make stupid decisions, he gets annoyed right off the bat.

He's groaning and complaining about how imbecile the characters are, but would still watch it with you because you personally invited him. If he's lucky you could fall asleep on his shoulder or [insert movie cliche here] how could he pass that up? But Noritoshi wouldn't be able to focus on you if he gets twice as annoyed because its a bad movie + jumpscares. it still startles him, but the movie is so terrible, he's embarrassed it got him, especially in front of you!!!

if you get involved and you tell him to quiet down, Noritoshi would shift his focus towards you. like that awkward guy who thinks he's being smooth and lowkey about how he cuddles up next to you. He wants to be the tough guy who's shoulder you can hide in, and he is!! just not.. with jumpscares.......

because today is apparently "narc abuse awareness day" I want everyone to know people with NPD aren't inherently evil and out to hurt people. Anyone caught making comments about them or any other stigmatized disorder will be blocked, I have no patience for this sort of behavior.

I know I just recently reblogged a post and mentioned how much I love the Lows but I love the Highs too and I think they're cute and they deserve more love <3 I love thinking about their little poetry readings and philosophy discussions and the fact that they probably all wear symbols on their foreheads in solidarity with Rimmer. I like to believe that there's a large garden on their ship and Kryten is the one who mainly tends it but the others help out and Rimmer paints it and does still lifes of various flowers and produce from it (he probably paints portraits of the others and other works but Holly can't sustain the projection of all of them so they don't last long). Even though The Cat doesn't care as much about fashion I think he still likes utilizing the same skills OG Cat has through embroidery/textile art and mending/creating all of their robes. He could also arrange flowers from the garden (sometimes for still lifes) and design the layouts of their communal areas. Lister can actually play guitar and other instruments on top of that and he's usually the one that performs music for the others (even though the others probably know how to play too- perhaps Lister taught them or helps them improve). He definitely taught Kryten and is the most encouraging in him trying out ways to express himself. Sometimes he writes poetry not set to music. In the universe(s) that exists where the High crew continue to live on after Demons and Angels take place, I think it's nice to imagine Rimmer getting the hardlight drive and all of them being so ecstatic that he can participate more fully in the activities on the ship, planting in the garden and playing physical instruments and getting to keep his paintings. They have a little banquet to celebrate and they cook it together. Rimmer paints Lister a little portrait that he can keep in a locket around his neck. Lister returns the gesture. I know this is all over the place but I just love thinking about the crew being creative and artistic and I think the Highs are the most likely to truly not only embrace that part of themselves but also make it communal. I want to see them create things and bond! I love them so much
