sigh, here's my ultimate favourites. I'm happy to make a full list if you want though.

Vox Machina: The series Feathers and Smoke by FeyNWiddershins. Hands-down best romp in canonical Percy/Vex. Also Percy becomes a toad and is put into Vex's bodice at one point. 10/10, highly recommend.

Mighty Nein: Draw between the mist upon the hill by Bucket of Water and We Circle By Night by InsanitySilver. Both are Caleb-centric. Both have angst. Mist is soulmate-based, Circle is a time-travel fix-it fic. Both have Molly trying to work out wtf is up with Caleb. Don't make me choose a favourite between these two, I love them both.

Bells Hells: remedy and relaxation from ivelostmyspectacles. If only we all had someone like Orym.

My Archive Of Our Own Wrap-up

I wanted to put together a thank you to all the fanfic writers who have gotten me through this year.

This wrap-up is me going through my history month by month to see which fics I'd visited the most (because you can be damn sure I read through them over several days).

So this is a celebration of the wide variety of fics I've read and/or bookmarked and/or subscribed to. Thank you to every writer on this list for keeping me entertained.

My first fic of 2023: Finding the Balance, by Amberlioness

Summary:

Events following ‘Bound’, leading up to ‘Demons’. Trip and T’Pol begin to explore what their bond means and how it affects them. Follows “Beginning in Earnest”. I’ve tried to keep as close to canon as possible, while filling in events and back story as the muse commands.

Star Wars Rebels, rated T. Completed 2023-03-29.

The Force wasn’t the only great power in the Galaxy. There were also the laws of physics. Kanan was strong in the Force, but the bind he had gotten himself into had to do with physics. (My inevitable “Kanan lives” story. He survives, and the story unfolds from there. Some of it resembles the story we already know, and some of it doesn’t. The ripples travel out.) Update: Chapter 1-8 is a complete story, you can stop reading there and get some nice closure. After that, I’m just kind of adding as I get ideas. Mostly I just like seeing Kanan get to be a dad so that’s what I’m doing. Thanks!

Synced To You, by TuppingLiberty

Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, rated E. Completed 2017-04-09.

Canonverse but Omegaverse: Though everyone can choose whomever they want as mate, your one true mate, the mate with which you 'sync', is your one best match in the entire galaxy. Poe recognizes Finn as his sync-mate immediately, but Finn is reluctant - extremely. Chapter 3 and various chapters thereon are explicit. This fic is now in epilogue-mode. Everything after Chapter 13 is epilogue. I will come back to it as it pleases me, which, right now, is often. :D

Poor Wayfaring Stranger, by lithos_saeculum

Final Fantasy XV, rated T. Last updated 2022-08-04.

Out on a mission, Cor Leonis finds a teenager, lost and sick and partway to becoming an MT. Against the advice of all and sundry, he brings him back to Insomnia. There's not a lot of love lost for MTs in the Citadel, but some of its inhabitants may still be young enough to put aside their prejudices.

Grand Theft Auto V, rated M. Completed 2021-01-27.

After Michael is shot in the street, his friends and family can all agree that it was an act of retaliation. However, none of them can agree on who pulled the trigger.

Bookmark note: The one where Jerry White is a piece of shit and also Trevor, Michael and Franklin have to deal with white supremesists. I don't think that's how supremesists is spelled. Lemme look into that.

Over And Over, by Nightwinging_it

Borderlands, rated M. Completed 2020-12-17.

Timothy Lawrence has resigned himself to his fate as Handsome Jack's property, even if it means losing himself. When an attempt by a friend to rescue him lands him in trouble with Jack, Timothy is banished to the casino as punishment. Angry and betrayed, Timothy is all too eager to seize the chance to escape, even if it comes in the form of a brash Operative. When Zane Flynt is hired to steal weapon schematics from Hyperion, he finds himself needing the help of Handsome Jack's Eridium addicted doppelganger. It's supposed to be a simple job, and he and the doppelganger will part ways the moment it's over. Only Zane didn't expect to get so damn attached to Timothy. (OR: Zane accidentally adopts Timothy, and chaos ensues)

Bookmark note: The one where Timothy's made to be hooked on eridium and Zane basically nurses him back to life.

TK Strand’s life has been filled with pain and rejection. His parents, extreme traditionalists, hate him for being a male omega and have kept him isolated for most of his life. When he finds out that he is going to be bonded to an alpha named Carlos in his Uncle Owen’s pack, he doesn’t know what to expect. Years of enduring verbal and physical abuse from his parents have left him withdrawn and wary of his new mate. Carlos is determined to get the omega to trust him, but TK’s scars run deep and old habits are hard to break. Can Carlos and the 126 help TK overcome his past and embrace his future?

Bookmark note: The one where Amara and Zane have a friends with benefits thing that accidentally falls into something more serious but then shit goes a little wrong and there's a few chapters where they're fucking dumb but it's okay because they eventually work it out.

Now Vex is scraping by on the streets, using her artistic talent to make enough for her and her dog to eat, searching for the twin brother who had been taken away from her because of the system. She didn't realize that when her search took her to Emon, the bustling city held both promises for the future and ghosts from the past.

37. Promote one of your own “deep cut” fics (an underrated one, or one that never got as much traction as you think it deserves!). What do you like about it?

Scars from Whumptober 2019. It's the childhood backstory that I use for my Stephen Strange in the majority of my works unless the fic states otherwise. It's only a one shot, so if you read my works and haven't read this one, I humbly implore folks reading now to take a look. I'm very proud of my muted showing not telling within this piece, and even 4 years later I think it's still one of my strongest one shots.

42. Have you ever received a comment that particularly stood out to you for whatever reason?

Yeah it happens for sure, when it's someone I don't expect to read my fics, it's something that it seems a non-frequent-user of the site stumbled into somehow, or it's just really lovely in its passion. There's a lot of ways comments can stand out and they're really delightful usually.

The negative ones also stand out obviously, but I've been on the internet long enough to know how to handle those. I don't tend to delete them but I try and reply diplomatically. I'll show my reply to others to make sure it's not too bad before posting lol.

45. What’s something you’ve improved on since you started writing fic?

I've been writing fic for 20 years, so literally everything. It's impossible not to after you have over a million words and thousands of other writers for reference under your belt, I think.

49. What are you currently working on? Share a few lines if you’re up for it!

I started a series in 2019 called Earth-197320, which is how in Marvel they designate different universes. I am writing the final story for the series called Above the Shadows, which is by far the longest story of it and it solves the issues brought on in the rest of the series. The fic itself is over 100k words right now, so I'll post the last lines I wrote last night.

"About a 98% success rate."

"I'd prefer 100%."

Tools Tuesday - Tagging - March 18

This Tools Tuesday is all about tagging, for when you’re ready to post your finished work on Archive of Our Own or any other site that uses tags! AO3, as the most popular fic posting site, will be the focus.

To begin: what are tags? And why do we use them?

Tags are keywords used to describe a fic or post. They can serve a variety of functions, but at their core they tell a viewer what to expect when they click in. On some sites (like Tumblr), they are at the bottom of the post or in the body of the post (like bsky). On AO3, they are the third thing seen, after title and author.

As seen in this handy infographic from SummerofSpock on tumblr, tags on A03 fall into 5 rough categories: Canon, Format, Tone, Relationship, Theme.

Not every fic might use every category, and there are certainly tags that overlap categories. There’s also what I consider a 6th category, which is Author Commentary (no beta we die like xx, character needs a hug, why did i do that much research for a single paragraph, etc).

All of that aside, why should you use tags?

They help readers find and enjoy your fic! The two main uses of tags when searching is Seeking and Avoidance.

Seeking is when a reader really wants to read a particular thing, like they want fix-its only or just Modern AUs. Once they narrow it down to fandom, these are the tags they’ll type into the search bar. If your work isn’t properly tagged, it won’t show up, even if it’s the epitome of a Coffee Shop AU and that’s the term they search. Generously tag so readers can find you!

Avoidance is excluding a fic from consideration due to a particular theme or topic. Maybe their pet just died, so any mention of Animal Death is out. Maybe they are really tired of a particular ship, or are narrowing down for a rarepair. On AO3, there’s a section in the filter bar for excluding tags (see below, boxed in blue). Readers can eliminate what they don’t want to see, which is wonderful! They can select exactly what they want; not every fic is for every reader. Generously tag, so readers can be selective!

@reconstructwriter sent me @insanitysilver 's AO3 Tastemaker Game and this is the treasure I found. I decided to play on hard mode and for bonus points before I even looked it up (the tag I used was Feng Xin & Mu Qing) but I wasn't actually expecting to find anything I enjoyed quite this much. It's a short little thing but it's also some well-written, relatively rare disability rep in need of some much-deserved loving. And it's given me lots of different Ideas (TM). 😂

While I meeble over the merits of posting the prologue of YCDHN early, I planned to drop this list of my four absolute FAVORITE Kingsley-centric fics in honor of his glorious return for people who might be excited and want more of him IMMEDIATELY.

All of these fics actually nailed Kingsley's in-canon characterization before we'd ever really met him properly and that's impressive! And also they're just great!

Autonomous, We by InsanitySilver This fic is an AMAZING deconstruction on all three of the purple tieflings as they try to navigate a bad situation in a dreamspace and come to terms with who they were and who they can become, while the Chained Oblivion lurks in the background. Features an extremely unique and original take on Lucien's backstory that I love dearly.

Crowned Teeth (or, An Offering Revoked) by fruitzbat Do you like historical fiction, piracy, deep lore, and a gorgeously fleshed out take from an otherwise unexplored part of Exandria? Boy do I have a fic for you! This fic features Kingsley out on his own and all the complications that comes with it, has an absolutely amazing collection of original characters, a world that feels lived in, and is the first of a multi-fic series about Kingsley's ascent into becoming a legend of his own making. It is seriously phenomenal.

He Did the Goat Dance Very Well by Operafloozy This is a fun (and angsty) piece that deals with Kingsley coping with the stories that Lucien and Molly left behind and is absolutely a delight from start to finish. And by one of my favorite fic writers to boot!

That Which We Call a Rose by Senor_Sparklefingers This is probably my absolute favorite character study that deals with Kingsley coming to understand himself fully as a person, which is a thing I know a lot of people have written, including myself, but god I just have so much fondness for this one.

And, an obligatory self-rec!

the shattered stage is set (and there's a role you must fulfill) A fic dealing with alternate universes, Tharizdun, contending with your baggage, Kingsley being the sensible one with two siblings to corral while saving the world, and Lucien getting beaten up by a five foot tall girl.

Wine-Dark Sea by fruitzbat (161010, Mature) Warnings: This piece is pretty heavily focused on post-traumatic, post-apocalyptic and post-genocidal themes. Most of the POV characters are struggling with some form of PTSD. Pairings: Kingsley/Original Character, Fjord/Jester.

Kingsley has just freed himself from something extraordinarily traumatic and is trying to rebuild something after it -- the question is more *what*.

Reccer says: This is a sequel to another iconic Kingsley-centric fic that may have already made the list; unlike the first, this is slower in pace and focuses a lot more on the characterization. I love the way that, while it does have some focus on his relationship to a supporting character, it's entirely about exploring Kingsley (as a character)'s relationship to the notion of free choice. His character arc in this is really well done. The themes are quite heavy, but are explored very thoughtfully and with the weight that they deserve.

Reccer 1 says: I think the most compelling thing to come out of the Nine Eyes of Lucien was that Lucien had a sister living in Rexxentrum the entire time. I like this fic's characterization of Kingsley, and the soft and heartbreaking reunion. Reccer 2 says: One of the thoughts that loomed largest in my mind after finishing Nine Eyes was "What would happen if King learned about Aldreda?" and this fic is *such* an interesting, emotion-filled exploration of that. Things did not play out how I expected they would in the best of ways, which is all I'll say on that. Never enough Kingsley fic in the world and getting into his head and how he would handle things was so fascinating and enjoyable here. Also, Essek and Kingsley's friendship is to die for and an excellent side to this fic!

Crowned Teeth (Or, An Offering Revoked) by fruitzbat (130,570, Teen) Warnings: Graphic Depictions of Violence Pairings: Kingsley Tealeaf/Original Character

After a standard trip towards the Bay of Gifts goes horribly wrong, Kingsley finds himself trapped and vowing to himself to hold those responsible to the light -- betrayed, isolated, and far from home, Kingsley must carve out his own destiny and forge a legacy he can say is worthy of those who came before him.

Reccer 1 says: This fic is absolutely amazing on every level, taking a sentence worth of a setting and expanding it into a beautiful bunch of worldbuilding. The original characters are amazing, the lore is air-tight, and it reads very much like a canon novel I could pick up in a bookstore. There is romance towards the end, but I consider it more of a "story with kissing" as opposed to "kissing with story" and the relationships between King and his crew are all developed well. This is also the first fic in a trilogy and all of them are worth a read. Reccer 2 says: This has some of the best worldbuilding I’ve ever seen in a fic. The world of piracy and sailing Kingsley inhabits is painstakingly described and true to life, and the portrayal of Kingsley’s state of mind, his friends and his enemies here is on point. I highly recommend this whole series for anyone who likes to wonder what Kingsley’s time on the seas and eventual journey to become Plank King might have entailed.

It’s a time travel AU (started mid-campaign so no Dynasty or Essek stuff or beyond) where an old and battered Caleb has a calculated plan to go back and right his most painful wrong: using two very precisely-worded Wishes, make smaller “jumps” back in time to reach that fateful night in Blumenthal and save his parents while trying to keep the timeline intact as best he can.

But when his first jump lands him in his old body the night before the Nein’s first confrontation with the Iron Shepards, will a level 20 Caleb be able to sit back and watch events replay in front of him?

Anyways I’ve reread this just so many times and it’s almost complete!!!

F: Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

"Next time you should watch how you act around your allies so you don't lose them, Domzalski."

This isn’t so much from my favorite dialogue scenes (because my favorite dialogue scenes are always interspersed with a metric fuckton of internal monologuing) so much as just a line I’ve liked from The Ones You Think You Love. I liked the way I changed from Toby being Tobes, Jim’s BFF, to Domzalski, a man who would betray old friends in a heartbeat if they’re not human. Or at least, this is how Jim interpreted it. By making it more impersonal by calling Toby by his last name, I was able to really contrast Jim’s conversation with his former friend with Jim’s conversation with his possessed not-dead girlfriend.

V: If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?

Pas de Chance by @insanitysilver. It was written pre-CGI release, and honestly the premise is really intriguing (also sleepy fluff and identity reveals would be included if I were to write a sequel)
