boom boom hamster doom is in early access :3

No more fiddly beta signups - if you've got a Quest 2/3, you can download it free right from the Meta store. A SteamVR release will be coming down the line, hopefully quite soon! And, for returning beta players, we fixed a whole bunch of bugs and added some little robot models and stuff.

What is it tho? It's a VR Worms-like game at tabletop scale, where you are a crab commanding armies of tiny hamsters blasting each other with missiles completely destructible voxel islands. It's like playing with toys: lead the hamsters around on little leashes, pull back to aim like a catapult, throw an airstrike like a paper plane.

I've got so much more to tell about this project, and you bet when those technical articles are ready I'll be getting into it all the weeds of voxels and netcode and stuff (right here!), but for now let's leave at that - so you can get on to blowing up tiny little windmills and figuring out grenade trick shots or whatever~

I've played every Beat Saber song two thousand times, so today I made the egregious mistake of getting Taiko Frenzy, which is the only VR drum game I've ever found that's remotely playable, since the sticks actually, you know, contact the drum surfaces when they're supposed to, and Boom Box, where a customizable, chonky, angry-faced cat accompanies you through Beat Saber-esque song levels making me feel like some turkey-leg wielding musical magical girl (but not enough songs yet, and nothing anyone’s ever heard of, unfortunately).

You know, the only time when incentivized unlockables don't make me want to vomit is when they exist not to try and manipulate me out of time and money, but when I can use them to drive myself to achieve something worthwhile.

And then four hours passed somehow and now I still have to shower and write and then clean my house.

Still, I really wish Beat Saber had regular updates, unlockable items/upgrades, different game modes ... something. Even working towards getting higher Expert+ scores is boring the hell out of me.

ADHD makes it so hard to find physical activity I want to do, so when the novelty wears off I start to get anxious about how hard it is to convince my sad, bored brain it's still important to do it.

I get that the guy behind it probably isn't making enough off it to spend enough time making it better.

What's extra sad is if he did charge more, me and all the other disabled people relying on it for exercise could no longer afford it.

It's already inaccessible for a lot of people just because it's VR and requires space and Internet.

In a perfect society, disability would be understood and accommodated so well that we'd all have free health care, and the need for a variety of engaging ways to work out would be something people are paid well to meet.

America, though. One in three people (probably closer to one in two, given the lack of access to healthcare) have prediabetes, and of the few of those people who do have access to a doctor, I'd bet one in ten of them aren't even told they have it because so many doctors don't believe information and support can change behavior (and the ones who aren't completely out of touch with reality know that even if support and education existed, their patients wouldn't have the time or money to access it). And maybe deep down, where those doctors aren't even aware of it themselves, they actually understand the role of diet in health, and the way the country actively works to encourage poor diet and ignorance around ways to improve it.

Partially because of the money poured into the pockets of the people developing the curriculums by the people in the food and healthcare industries who profit from all the sick and dying people.

Yeah. We get to live in a country where our very ability to maintain our own health is held hostage by "healthcare providers" whose curriculum is compromised by insurance companies and politicians -- despite studies showing that ADHD can shorten your lifespan -- depending on whether they choose to believe it's more important to gatekeep access for the sake of "medication abusers" (who are, in many cases, people self-medicating actual disability, due to this exact healthcare gatekeeping), instead of doing their jobs and fulfilling their responsibility to actual disabled people, many of us already formally diagnosed, because they get off on neglecting their duty of care in favor of the great fun of power trips.

Another day, another fifteen-to-sixteen hours of trying not to let systemic abuse and the ever-deteriorating state of the world send me back to bed.

It ambushes me like a rabid raccoon at every corner.
