Usually a female homosexual who is the more aggressive and masculine partner in a social or sexual relationship; a female homosexual who assumes the responsibilities of the husband; a male homosexual who appears masculine; the opposite of a 'fem'. Some male homosexuals may assume the 'butch' role to conceal their homosexuality from heterosexual friends. (adj.) Masculine or mannish.

BUTCH IT UP (v.) : To behave in a masculine manner. For a male homosexual, to appear 'straight'; for a female to be aggressively mannish." — definition from Anthropological Linguistics, vol. 13-14 (1971)

That's an example from more than 50 years ago and it explicitly includes gay men in the definition.

The word butch has never been exclusive to lesbians and has been widely used in gay male communities for decades. In fact, it's even considered part of Polari (historical gay slang from 19th and early 20th century). You will find books like The Butch Manual (1982) that use the word exclusively to refer to gay men. The word is also used among QPoC in ballroom culture to refer to gay men, who are called Butch Queens.

According to the work of Marlon M. Bailey (scholar of African-American and LGBT studies), who studied ballroom culture, in the gender system of the ballroom scene, the word "Butch" is literally the gender term used for trans men, just like how "Femme Queen" is the word for trans women. (see : Butch Queens Up in Pumps : Gender Performance and Ballroom Culture in Detroit, by Marlon M. Bailey (p. 40) ; Black Genders and Sexualities, by Shaka McGlotten and Dana-Ain Davis (chapter 14)...)

Proeminent TMoC in ballroom (Reese Pandavies, Duchess Ebony, Reno Prestige Wright...), walked as Butches in balls. This is part of the history of the ballroom scene and shouldn't be erased. More recently in the 21st century, the Butch category has split to create a "Transman" category, because trans men were perceived as getting some sort of advantage at looking masculine when competing against butch cis women (you can hear Sean Ebony Coleman and Shady Prada, two trans men from the ballroom scene, talk about it in the short video "Changing Butch Realness Category" from the Ballroom Culture History Channel). So now there are often separate "Transmen" categories. Language and labels evolve.

The word "butch" has a long history among gay men and trans men, including MoC in the ballroom scene. You don't get to rewrite history and erase that to pretend it has always been some sort of lesbian-exclusive word, let alone a recent one. It is really disrespectful towards all the trans men in history who have fought, been beaten, jailed and died under that label.

It's just like how we now consider drag queens and trans women different categories that shouldn't be conflated, but trans women can still be drag queens, and a lot of "drag queens" in history were actually trans women / transfem. It's generally considered transmisogynistic erasure when people act like, say, Stonewall was just about gay men and that the people in the riot were all cis gay drag queens. And acknowledging all that says nothing about the fact that trans men can also be drag queens.

Maybe you don't like the fact that trans men are sometimes mentioned alongside butches. You don't have to like it, but you cannot behave like that and straight up rewrite parts of queer history, especially when it's black queer history.

From the Racetrack To Space: IWC Schaffhausen and the Polaris Program Give Lewis Hamilton Astronaut Flight Training

Schaffhausen/Qatar, 26th November 2024: In a compelling new short movie produced by IWC Schaffhausen, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team driver Lewis Hamilton embarks on a flight training for astronauts. The same training was used to prepare the crews of the Inspiration 4 and Polaris Dawn commercial human spaceflight missions. During the training day, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion and IWC brand ambassador was accompanied by students from Dibia DREAM, a non-profit organisation fostering STEM education. Their presence is also a reminder of Lewis Hamilton's own incredible career journey spanning more than three decades and sends an inspiring message: you can be anything you want in life – a pilot on the racetrack, in the air or even in space.

One of the most successful racing drivers of all time, Lewis Hamilton is a multifaceted personality whose interests and ambitions extend far beyond his sport. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion is deeply fascinated by space and human space exploration. He has visited renowned space training facilities and repeatedly expressed his desire to take part in a space mission in the future if it serves a purpose and contributes to the betterment of all humanity. IWC Schaffhausen now teamed up with the Polaris Program and its Philanthropy Director and instructor pilot, John "Slick" Baum, to offer Lewis Hamilton an opportunity to experience the flight training that is part of the organization's programme of preparing astronauts for space. The Polaris Program, which is supported by IWC, recently completed the first of three human spaceflight missions. During their five days in orbit, the Polaris Dawn crew wrote history by successfully performing the first commercial spacewalk.

FLIGHT TRAINING IS ESSENTIAL FOR ASTRONAUTS

Fighter jet training has been at the heart of human spaceflight since the beginning. All early astronauts were fighter jet pilots, and experience in piloting a jet was an essential requirement for going to space. Flight training was also a key pillar in the preparation of the Inspiration 4 and Polaris Dawn crews for their missions. While the g-loads experienced in a jet or a rocket cannot be directly compared, as they affect the body in different ways, jet training still offers compelling benefits for astronauts. Most importantly, it allows the crew members to familiarise themselves with operating in a high-risk and high-consequence environment, similar to what they would experience during launch. While they are pressed down into their seats by several times their own body weight, they have to communicate with each other, go through extensive technical checklists, and monitor critical flight parameters – all while being mentally aware of their surroundings and prepared to act in case something unexpected should happen.

A COMPLETE SEQUENCE OF TRAINING MANOEUVRES

Lewis Hamilton's space training kicked off with an extensive briefing and inspection of the L-39 Albatros jet. John "Slick" Baum gave Hamilton a detailed overview of the manoeuvres they would fly and how they simulate different situations an astronaut experiences during a spaceflight. During their subsequent discovery flight lasting almost one hour, Hamilton and his instructor performed a series of manoeuvres. They practiced accelerations and decelerations to experience lateral g-forces, simulating the ascent of a rocket. They also practiced higher g-loads by banking or pitching the aircraft hard. A highlight was flying a parabola figure for a zero-g demonstration, during which Hamilton briefly experienced the feeling of weightlessness. A racing glove, which eventually began to float freely in the cockpit, was used as a zero-g indicator. In flight, the F1 pilot pulled a maximum of 7.5 g, which is more than astronauts typically experience on ascent. Hamilton wore a dedicated race suit featuring a "space mission" patch with his car number 44. He will wear the same suit during this weekend's race at the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar.

DIBIA DREAM STUDENTS SEND A POWERFUL MESSAGE

The training was also attended by a group of students from Dibia DREAM. This nonprofit organisation sparks social change through STEM education and recreational activities for underserved youth and has impacted the lives of 40,000 students across 32 states and twelve countries. The students spent the entire day engaging in a variety of activities related to space exploration. They also got a chance to meet with Hamilton and ask him questions prior to take-off. Their presence served as a powerful reminder of Hamilton's incredible journey, from his humble beginnings in karting at the age of eight to becoming one of the most acclaimed drivers in the history of motorsport. As the students cheered alongside the runway, they sent an uplifting message to youths around the world: you can be anything you want in life – whether it is a racing driver, a pilot, or even an astronaut.

They listened as Childe and Zhongli explained the situation and Zhongli's intentions of performing a parting rite for Rex Lapis. The old god hummed but said nothing during the entire exchange much to Aether's confusion and worry, Paimon was far too busy eating the compensated buffet to fully engage with the topic at hand. "So you wish for our help with this...rite of parting as you say...what do you think Starlight? Are you up to that task? If not do feel free to refuse..." They said gently whilst still looking at the two with sharp eyes of scrutiny. Upon hearing Aether quietly agree the old god nodded their head. "Very well then...I'll leave the children in your capable hands Mr. Zhongli....do see to it that nothing happens to them in the meantime..."

While they said this with a smile the tension in the air was so horribly charged with hostility it was clearly an underlying threat. They then stood up ruffling Aether's hair and patting Paimon's head as they began to leave," I have some matters to attend to for the moment...I'll return for the children later..." (Y/n) said with a wave of their hand as they finally parted from the restaurant. They then made their way to a darkened alley before fading into the shadows. Once done they soon reappeared from the shadow of a balcony that was being reconstructed on the peak of Dragonspine.

"Ah back again...How goes things Dorian? Polaris?" They asked as they floated behind the two with a curious look seeing the creature that they created was bouncing about happily whilst the homonculus poured over what looked like blueprints or schematics. Dorian glanced to the side a bit before fulling turning around with a short bow of respect. "I see you've returned..."

This drew of chuckle from the god’s chest as they gently straightened his form before speaking, “No need for that now Dorian….I may be something godly but treat me as you would anyone else….” They finished with a smile before patting his head and floating upwards towards the floating pillar in the sky just as Polaris flew after them to catch up as well. Reaching the top of the Skyfrost Nail, (Y/n)’s eyes glanced around at the view before them. A soft smile graced their face as they then closed their eyes and began to concentrate their power into an orb. The orb of condensed magic cosmic magic began to grow rapidly before it was the size of the average wagon wheel. Spinning it they chuckled before opening their eyes and letting the orb float above them and continue to grow before it was big enough to cover the top of the nail like the flat end of a nailhead. “I suppose I’ll repurpose this….” They murmured to themself as the orb exploded into a wave the covered the entirety of Dragonspine into a ripple effect. The snowstorm cleared and the Skyfrost Nail began to crack more before breaking into smaller and smaller chucks of crystal.

By this point the remaining crystal chunks floated around as the air around them compressed and spun them, like a rock tumbler polishing them to a fine finish. These refined crystals then gravitated towards each other before forming itself into a javelin style spear, glowing the same bright blue as the Skyfrost Nail had. “Perfect…hmm I’ll keep it simple and call it the Frosted Sky…” (Y/n) murmured to themselves once more as they floated back down to meet the curious gazes of the hilichurls and Dorian. Polaris was swaying from side to side in his typically happy dance, the sound of bell chimes ringing out as he cheered in praise of both the new weapon his creator had and the removal of celestial influence. “Dorian? I have something for you dear….” They murmured to old god said with a knowing look as they presented the javelin to him. “I’m aware you prefer the sword but I believe this polearm might serve you better in your question of self realization…and sorry not for your proficiency it will teach you how to use it best…..”

The blonde in question was slightly skeptical but regardless took the javelin from the god he’d begun to serve. As soon as his hands touched it he felt a wave of cooling like an icy wind wash over him. With a hum he swung the javelin to the side finding it to be with far more ease than he’d ever had wielding a sword, the ringing the weapon made as it swung through the air also gave a him a sense of awareness that he was deeply unaccustomed to. Yet despite this it felt oddly familiar as if there was a helping hand guiding his movements to wield this new weapon as if he’d done so always. “How…?” Dorian’s voice was now bewildered as home stared between the newly acquired weapon and (Y/n). “Simple…I just gave you a guiding hand is all…now use it well my dear Dorian…there will be changes to the monsters here and they will need both your and my guidance….but mostly yours as I will be busy for the next few days…If you truly need me that spear will call for me…take care everyone!”

They waved just before Dorian could speak and teleported back to Liyue.

As they exited the shadow cast by a nearby tree they took a moment to look around. Noticing that Zhongli and their children were all standing in front of Babu Pharmacy. Childe was also nearby laughing up a storm about a ‘Cocogoat’. Seems the old god was gone far longer than intended, they merely shrugged before approaching. “Ah greetings everyone I see you’re all in good spirits…” Aether smiled seeing his parent standing behind the no longer laughing Harbinger. Zhongli’s expression was slightly troubled at their presence and Childe was looking like a nervous kid that was caught being naughty.

Paimon’s smug expression as she floated past child acting huffy like an upset toddler making (Y/n) coo. “Oh it’s alright stardust…You couldn’t have known that little Qiqi was talking about Coconut Milk….” Though despite their comforting words they too were giggling about the situation with a knowing look. No one questioned how they knew what was being discussed. "But I suppose that means all the preparations for the rite of parting are completed yes?" The old god asked though it was obvious they already knew the answer. Zhongli cleared his throat before speaking, "Precisely...With that we shall be headed back to Yujing Terrace...Mr Childe, Dr. Baizhu, Little Miss Qiqi...see you soon..." As he left he could feel the eyes of the old god on him, and it took everything within him not to shudder at the feeling. Once he was out of sight (Y/n) let go of Paimon to let her float back to Aether's side as the two began to speak with Baizhu and Qiqi a bit more. Childe too had made his way out of the pharmacy shortly after Zhongli. Childe stood off to the side a bit as he calmed himself down from the good laugh he'd gotten from the situation, "So...you've been ease dropping I hope? What have I missed?" Instead of the voice he expected to hear which was that of his agent Ekaterina, he heard another familiar voice that instilled a sense of panic within him that he was unaccustomed to. "You've missed nothing other than my warning it would seem little harbinger...and no need to worry for Miss Ekaterina...she's back at the Northland Bank...though I can't attest to her mental state at the moment...poor girl seems rather...forgetful...." Once finished speaking they approached him before tapping his back," But I will throw you a bone for my own amusement...the Qixing are keeping the Exuvia in the Golden House....do use this information wisely...it'd be a shame really if you weren't able to fufill your mission of obtaining the Geo Archon's gnosis now wouldn't it..." Their voice came out almost like a purr that relayed the underlying threat to their words. "off you go~" They said with a gentle shove than sent him stumbling forwards a bit as the redhead quickly made his way down the long staircase without another word. With that interaction completed Aether and Paimon had just exited the Pharmacy having finished their conversation with Baizhu and Qiqi. "Ready to go you two?" (Y/n) asked with their usual chipper tone as they gentle pinched both companions' cheeks. Receiving a nod from their blonde son the old god then began to lead the way to Yujing Terrace.

In SEKAI, PRISM has a normal human body, and it takes full advantage of that to try different things "in person." Jamie brings it lots of different snacks.

You've started playing Control 2. The Hiss have finally been eradicated and Jesse is trying to formally settle into her new role as Director. She has a routine: sign documents that need her approval, perform janitorial duties, deal with any out of control Altered Items, visit Emily Pope- her closest friend in the FBC and assisstant to Head of Research Dr Casper Darling, visit Dr Darling to discuss ongoing research-

Polaris flares wildly. Jesse counters with what do you mean? It's just Dr Darling, he's been here for years. He's always been a bit weird. He writes poetry in his spare time? Yeah, so what? He's a valuable part of the bureau and is allowed to have hobbies.

But Polaris insists that something's not right, and Jesse trusts her. Wait. Didn't she make Emily Head of Research?

Polaris guides Jesse to unlock her memories of the real Dr Darling. The one whose videos she'd seen, the one who ended up exposing himself to "Hedron" and presumably ascended to another plane of existence. The one who acted nothing like the man who is currently Head of Research and has always been, according to everyone else's memory. Jesse slowly realises and comes to terms with the fact that the Dr Darling in The Oldest House is an imposter, or at the very least not the original Dr Darling, and reality has been changed to reflect the switch. It's like the original never existed, like this new version has overwritten the old one.

Polaris X-Men 97 (1x08)

How messed up is it in the future 'utopia' Cable describes, Magneto’s own daughter Polaris, is shown performing slave labour. As an old woman no less! How long was she used by Bastion to perfect his world? How long did it take to break her and turn her into his servant?

It just makes everything that Magneto does so much more…important? Painful? Fruitless? I cannot even describe how awful it is in the whole context of the episode.

Magneto was forever marked and affected by the horrors he endured. I'm not sure if he knows about her being his daughter in the context of the show, but it makes her a symbol of one of his most important goals: she is a second-generation mutant child. One that is intelligent and powerful, who may become a leader and be part of a better world. He is not a great father, don't get me wrong, but their relationship has always had massive potential because he literally wants all mutants to be able to live fully, procreate, and advance freely!

I know he couldn't possibly have seen this image, nor does he fight explicitly for her, but he wants a better world for every mutant. In this future Bastion created, its clear that he failed in the worst way and his own blood suffered, just like he did.

For most experienced, Kanaru and Basile have the edge on everyone else because of being the oldest. Isabeau has also been an actor for a long time. Prunille is fairly new to acting as a job, but she's been in love with theater for as long as she can remember and has acted out parts by herself since childhood—what's new to her is performing in front of an actual audience. Polaris is older than Isabeau and Prunille but newer to this sort of thing than both of them. Alex is a preteen and their experience is necessarily limited by that. "Saffron" is just Siffrin so we're not talking about them.

As for who enjoys seeing plays the most... well, all of the actor AU characters have some degree of Theater Autism. If I had to choose one person I'd say Prunille, but you can't go wrong with any of them.

Bella Swan as a witch

Witches (my interpretation) in the Twilight universe. What types of witch Bella would be. And what powers/abilities she'd have.

Witches are Gifted Humans who spontaneously develop the ability to use magic as a response to trauma. Such as parentification, multiple near death experiences, being dumped by one's boyfriend and being abandoned by his family after being treated as a beloved member. The new witch will become connected to an element that best reflects their personality. The witch will develop powers that are tied to their connected element and are a manifestation of their strongest characteristics.

Bella would be connected to the earth. The earth symbolizes strength, steadfastness and wisdom. These are reflections of Bella's stubbornness and her resilience from taking care of her mom and herself from such a young age. The earth is also a symbol of empathy and fertility. These are reflections of Bella's compassion, how she's able to show grace and love to even the supernatural and her nurturing spirit.

Powers Bella would develop.

Geo-mystokinesis: the power to perform magical feats by drawing on the forces of the earth, giving Bella magic abilities that are tied to nature.

Geokinesis: the power to manipulate earth Chlorokinesis: the power to manipulate plant-life and vegetation.

Kitchen witchcraft: the power to use witchcraft that centers around the kitchen

Magical cooking: the power to prepare dishes infused with enchantments and spells. Ingredient enchantment: the power to charm ingredients used to prepare spell infused dishes. Herbal magic: the power to utilize herbs to concoct magical teas, potions, and elixirs.

What types of witch would Bella be? The powers that Bella has determine her witchy path as a kitchen witch and a green witch. Bella has been cooking since the age of six. The kitchen is a familiar and comforting environment. Baking spells into lasagnas or charming jars of homemade jams would be the natural path for witchy Bella. As a green witch, Bella would nurture her connection to the natural world. She already enjoys being outdoors especially when the weather is nice. Though she was, at first, unhappy to be in Forks she did appreciate the other worldly beauty of the greenery. In Midnight Sun, there's this part where she's describing Arizona to Edward and she really puts emphasis on the simplistic beauty that the Arizonian landscape has to offer. Bella is just someone who appreciates the beauty and mystery in nature which is why I think that, as a witch, her powers would be earth based.

Random headcanon. Whenever Bella uses her geo-mystokinesis powers, there's a green glow around her hands. Like MCUs Wanda's powers or Polaris from The Gifted.

Polaris, Victim or Survivor

I'm about to go into things that I've gone into with other posts, but I hope the way I express it opens some minds and brings new clarity. Before I do, I want to present the inspiration behind this post, the song "Victim or Survivor" performed by Icon For Hire and Citizen Soldier. It's not "required listening" by any means, but it gives an idea of where this post is coming from, and I'll be referencing parts of it as I talk about Lorna.

Okay, here we go.

Polaris as a character has existed since 1968. She's the second woman to join the X-Men, coming before women like Storm, Rogue, Emma, and others who have been given more of a spotlight and more opportunities over time. Lorna was also much more feminist than Jean Grey at the time she was introduced - an aspect that led to her getting overly punished with loads of regression and sexism that continues to hold her back to this day even as other female characters benefit from her having paved the way for them.

That's 56 years. Fifty-six years of comics appearances. Fifty-six years of lost opportunities, while Marvel put her through things like this. Not in chronological order. And not everything, but a sampling of what I happen to have saved to make my point.

My point? For most of her time from the 70s to the late 90s, Lorna was constantly getting abused. Just one abuse after another. Whether it's being written as terrified of Sabretooth before Malice possessing her (and getting beat up by characters like Storm), or having her powers stolen by Zaladane and given ones that provide an excuse for everyone to hate her, or just an endless parade of mind control and humiliation, Lorna just kept getting treated like a punching bag.

One not allowed to be anything else. Not even allowed to keep her own identity, toward the end of Claremont's run.

A perpetual victim.

But see, then something happened in the early 2000s.

The Genoshan genocide.

In the actual telling of it, not the X-Men 97 version, Lorna was present as a survivor. She had already been there up to that point aiding Magneto in running the island, supporting the concept of a mutant homeland and posing as him with an image inducer on his behalf when he became weakened.

New X-Men 132 showed the aftermath, and came first. It showed how Lorna survived the genocide but had to relive its final moments over and over with her powers until the X-Men found her.

That could have theoretically been the end of it. Just that one issue. But then Chuck Austen, despite all his faults in various areas, did the one thing literally no other writer did before him or since.

He gave a damn.

I'm not here to say Chuck Austen is some black and white caricature of exclusively good or bad writing. Nobody fits that bill. What I AM here to say is that what he did with and for Lorna is, still to this day, the best writing she's ever had in the 616.

Why?

Because under his pen, Lorna was not just a perpetual victim.

She was a survivor.

He wrote Lorna processing her trauma in the wake of Genosha. He wrote the flashback of the actual experience, he wrote her dealing with her mental health in the aftermath, he wrote her personal philosophy and views of the world shaping up to what she experienced. By the end of his run, we had Lorna in a position where she was ready to fight for mutants because she abhorred what she personally witnessed and didn't want any other mutants to go through what she did.

... But this is Marvel. Which loves its nostalgia. Even if that nostalgia is horribly regressive and loaded with untold amounts of sexism.

So after Lorna got depowered by Wanda from Decimation, she got taken down the wrong path again starting with being depicted as a "loony" type of crazy, followed by getting turned into Pestilence. She was rescued from that, left the X-Men, and the next time we saw her after that... we got this shit.

See, a perpetual thorn on Lorna's path to true development has been nostalgia for her forced into relationship with Havok. And throughout, Lorna's victimization often comes paired with her needing to serve that role so Havok can play the role of cis straight Aryan male coming to her rescue. The origins of that relationship also came paired with tearing down her more feminist introduction through Havok.

There's never been a true reckoning with this by Marvel. Because they think Lorna is so under the wire, so "unimportant," that they can keep doing it to her as compared to other characters like Jean or Storm that would rightfully have fans up in arms at such treatment.

That was the case here, when she got sent into space to be a supporting character for Havok. This is how she's been depicted since Genosha as a result.

And since she got sent to space with Havok, we've had repeated cases where Marvel deliberately ignores how Lorna's a survivor of the Genoshan genocide all so they can keep sending her back into victim land. Like so.

Notice how that last example from Prisoner X shows absolutely NOTHING of her surviving the Genoshan genocide. Notice that instead, it felt that showing her kissing Havok back in the 90s was apparently far more important.

Notice how Lorna's apologizing for Rockslide's death when she didn't know him, while never once acknowledging the genocide she survived. Notice Lorna getting mind-controlled for the billionth time, this time by Siryn, AND being called dumb for a scenario concocted purely so she could be called dumb.

Then we have the plane crash. Which, overall I support as part of Lorna's story... but it still fits my point of giving her new traumas and acting like the genocide never happened. And in this case, it hasn't been touched upon since.

Over the decades, Lorna has gone through a LOT of trauma. But simply having gone through trauma isn't the whole story.

It's what comes out of the trauma that matters most. How the character is presented. How they develop. What their experiences mean.

For Lorna, it comes down to two issues.

Is she a victim?

Or is she a survivor?

Marvel from the 70s to the late 90s preferred that she be a victim. Marvel from the late 00s to today also takes that attitude. That she should always be relegated to suffering.

That's not where her future lies. And frankly, Marvel should strive to be a fuckload better about this matter just as a whole. Because trauma is a major issue for just about everyone alive, especially now, to varying degrees.

The Lorna we got by the end of Austen's run was someone who wasn't just a victim of the genocide. She was a survivor.

She didn't let it send her crawling into a dark pit of nothing and hide from the world, afraid she might see more death or experience more trauma. She faced that shit head on. She stayed in the fight, put herself at risk, dealt with the pain of having failed to save people who looked up to her.

Lorna surviving the Genoshan genocide isn't an insignificant plot point that's free for any random character to take from her as some would like to have believed. She has a distinct history of poor treatment where she's been presented as a victimized punching bag, and Genosha was the catalyst for her to finally not be that. It was her transformative moment.

Right this second, what we're dealing with is certain people within Marvel who think Lorna should primarily be in the role of victim and supporting character for Havok.

What we need to do is push back against that and emphasize that she's not a victim. She's a survivor.

As the lyrics of the song I linked at the start say: "Crutch or a crown only you decide."

Lorna more than deserves that crown. And she will only get it when she stops being treated like a victim and starts getting recognized for the survivor she is.

One of my favorite parts of my time spent here has been how much I've been able to connect with locals. I spent a couple weeks in Italy a few years ago for school, and the language barrier paired with my age/the rigidity of the program meant I really couldn't hope to "meet" people there.

This time has been totally different. I can't help but think this will be the most memorable part of my trip.

Like the Italian server we met in Brixton Market, who Kelly talked to in Italian and she got so excited! We talked about Cranston and how it's brimming with Italian-American culture and how the streets are sometimes lined with the Italian flag. She was so kind and connected to us after that.

Or the two guys we met walking to The Divine to see our cabaret show, Dom and Adrian, who taught us about Polari and the history of the secret language that British queers used to communicate safely and secretly in the 20th century.

Or HRH Aphrodite & Hunter Gatherer, the queen/king couple we met after the actual drag performance. How Aphrodite spoke so eloquently and informedly about the history of Shakespeare and the plays we loved and hated (she's not a fan of Pericles).

Or the 15 year old boy who was our tour guide at the Holy Trinity Church where Shakespeare is buried. He was working this wild historical site as just his "highschool" part-time job. He told us about the election of the head boy, and how it's usually based on sports & popularity, and how they get to parade around every year on Shakespeare's birthday and replace the quill that his statue is holding in it's hand.

Or the girl at the grocery store in Stratford-upon-Avon who lived in a quiet village close to town where there's mist in the mornings and she gets to watch badgers come out of their sets, and nobody else barely even lived there, yet she still engages in D&D and art and game design and all of these social and creative interests, and how she'll never leave her home because she loves it so much.

𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭.

do not fear. wendy and finn are not twins. or well. they're irish twins (finn's younger). and he skipped third grade.

the walshes rocked. kind and supportive, they knew what they were doing with their kids. so finn had a home life that encouraged him to be exactly who he is. by that account, he’s remarkably lucky. 

however, thea and henry raised some weirdo children. like wendy, finn was overenthusiastic, nerdy, and loud about his unconventional interests, making him a target for bullying. 

but UNLIKE wendy, finn simply did not care. he had a superiority complex and, frankly, the bullying encouraged it; maybe if you troglodytes had brains, you would be operating on the same level as him 🙄

so he just kept doing his thing, not really caring what anyone thought of him or how they reacted to him, he was taught to be so sure of himself that he couldn’t be swayed. he didn’t need a lot of friends, just one or two to perform ritual sacrifices on wendy’s dolls with and he’s good! 

finn never had the transition that wendy did, though i think the bullying subsided after they realized that finn didn’t care, or just grew up. he ran in some nerdier circles, but was never into extracurriculars so he just hung out and did his thing. 

he graduated with near perfect grades, and fucked off to college. i will not say college mellowed finn (he’s still a mean little girl that’s a grown man), but, i think it grounded him. a little bit. while he was still smart enough to breeze through most of his classes, he met a lot more people that he considered to be just as smart as him. plus, he wasn’t tainted by his weirdo reputation from childhood. so, while he’s still decidedly abnormal, he was at his most normal in college. hooray!

then finn kept his normal boy era going and furthered his education! he’s in a computer science phd program at university of chicago rn!

(cancer tw) so basically, finn is a pretentious asshole who definitely thinks he's too good for red creek and only ever would've come home to see his family. HOWEVER he is back in town because his mom was diagnosed with cancer and he is helping to take care of her. he took a year off from his program and is now living at home!

finn is. a macabre freak of nature. so naturally he's always been obsessed with the original murders and disappearances, especially because his mom's brother is one of the ones that went missing. and this time around, he WILL be inserting himself into everything and speaking way too loudly about very sensitive topics in his very insensitive way.

AND as if he wasn't annoying enough. he has a podcast.

𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲.

outspoken and audacious, finn can be, well, a lot. he comes in as a hyperactive know-it-all and annoys basically everyone. though the rare few could find him funny, with his quick wit and biting sarcasm! if you're into that. he behaves the same way around basically everyone (he has no respect for authority figures), but finn’s very skeptical of other people. despite being extroverted and outgoing, he’s rather cold because of how hard he is to win over and how slow he is to trust. that said! should you win him over, he is one of the most loyal mfers in the world. he will go to the ends of the earth for the people he loves.

𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐬.

finn and wendy's father (henry) is a beloved history teacher at red creek! if your character grew up in red creek, they probably had him! he teaches 11th grade.

finn’s podcast is a labor of love. basically, he just loves to talk and get into little arguments about dumb shit with his co-host. and he’s a film bro. yay <3

he also works at the movie theater because he gets bored easily and the employee discount slays.

finn engages in some... casual hacking. he knows his way around a computer, and well, he’s curious! he sees a firewall and says let me in. he doesn’t really do anything with any information, he just collects it and moves on with his life because he likes to know. 

he was on the soccer team in high school. or, more accurately, he rode the bench for the high school soccer team. finn is too klutzy to be an athlete, and it was more just padding for his college applications. but also i'm not married to soccer being the sport he played if any athletes in the group want to use this as a basis for connections <3 it doesn't matter what the sport is, finn was bad at it

finn loves doing crosswords. he is the crossword king. he has multiple crossword apps on his phone, not just the nyt daily because that simply isn’t enough for him. he has to get his fix or he'll die

BIG horror fan. violence and killing is fun <3 but he also enjoys thrillers and crime stories. his first dream job was to be a private eye that stands under streetlights and monologues.  

despite seeming kind of impulsive and easily distracted, finn is actually incredibly organized about things that he decides matters. he has a system in his head that makes sense, even if to the outsider it seems nonsensical: he meticulously color coded his school supplies (though his actual notes from class would need to a decoder) and his all the apps on his phone are organized in labeled folders (his notes app is a mess!)

finn sleeps like an old man with 27 diseases. when he isn’t snoring loudly, he’s muttering to himself, and when he isn’t splayed out uncomfortably, his arms are flailing about. he sleeps with his mouth open and drools. he either can only sleep for a few hours at a time, always on alert, OR, he is basically dead. he has really vivid, absurd, and disturbing dreams. he should see a doctor about it, but c’est la vie.
