AC/DC is a VERY smart song, one of the reasons it’s my favorite lyrically in the show is that it’s so explicitly about electric trains and has multiple references to super interesting issues/traits with them. This doesn’t go into the broader electricity puns (which are shockingly versatile), just the ones most relevant to trains
“Feel my magnetism”
I’m still trying to figure out if this is an issue with remotely modern electric trains and motors, but I have heard a claim about a turn of the century New York Central S-motor (one of the very first mass produced electric locomotives!) basically “picking up and stealing” some tools left near the track this way and then dropping them when switched off.  Basically the whole “pulling in things with magnetism” has at least some real life precedent with trains.
“AC/DC it’s okay by me/ I can switch and change my frequency”
This was perhaps the defining feature of the CC 40100 Electra’s helmet was based on.  Due to inconsistent electrification systems (due to early 20th century tech limits) it’s very common to have 2,3, even 4 voltage locomotives and EMUs since it’s cheaper and easier than replacing all that infrastructure.  Having both AC and DC compatibility is actually super old, the New Haven Railroad had one of the first AC-powered lines ever and the very first AC locomotives there had to be equipped for both it and the existing DC third rail in other sections.  But being able to run on multiple AC frequencies is much more recent, and the CC 40100 was an early example of it.  The Northeast Corridor in the US actually requires trains capable of running on THREE different AC voltages/frequencies, being able to “change your frequency” is an important requirement there (and in continental Europe)
Basically, silly 70s-80s era bi allusions are just how electric trains are.  It’s so out there but so on the nose.  It’s probably the single smartest writing decision of the show because it works so well and talking train media otherwise NEVER talks about these aspects of electrification.
“I can shock you, I can set you on fire”
The history of diesel and electric trains involves so, so much spontaneous combustion.  Exploding is almost exclusively a steam engine thing, but if they wanted to dramatically kill Electra or Greaseball or any of the Nationals, this is always an option and weirdly underused.
“I can reach up and pluck down the lightning/watch the conductor, see the live wire”
Direct reference to overhead electrification and how pantographs are raised to make contact.   Also fun play on train conductor/electrical conductor, which is popular in trolley/train jokes.  This system is something almost exclusive to trains and part of why they are so established, efficient, widespread and convenient as electric vehicles.  They’re genuinely absurdly OP vs basically all other forms of traction since they don’t have to carry their own fuel/power supply and can have ridiculously high single-unit power since the only limit is how much capacity the power grid has (and how much can be practically used without wheelslip).  Due to their fixed paths they can run this way vs needing batteries and totally bypass the decades of density limits those had.  Even today batteries are not really practical as a main power source for anything bigger than commuter EMUs and switchers.
(Trolleybuses are a thing and there’s been attempts at sticking pantographs on trucks… and I guess bumper cars technically count too lol)
Shoutout to Stexico for having a very different chorus with somehow the exact same sentiment.
“Macho/Hembra es mi conector” (Male/Female is my connector)
This is just a hilariously matter of fact statement about the electrical connections on AAR standard passenger engines and coaches, which I think Mexico uses since their rail system is so US-based but I could be wrong (privatization axed basically all their passenger services around the time Stexico came out and there’s very little even today).  The stuff about “with my switch I connect you” is also incredibly matter of fact because there’s usually a separate switch or dial to turn on head end power on locomotives.
Electra is based on this very 70s bi stereotype/trope that lumps in the botanical definition of “bisexual” and makes characters “both male and female” in a way that’s inconsistently trans, GNC, and/or literally being 50/50 both in a way that doesn’t work that way in humans.  Velvet von Ragnar from Never Too Young to Die is almost IDENTICAL in this regard as another example.  But the hilarious thing is that it’s just… incredibly matter of fact and literal when applied to electric trains because so many of them are able to run on both AC and DC power because rail electrification is so messy and many of them are technically “both male and female” going off electrical connections.
Anyways, tangent aside
I do not know enough German to appreciate the intricacies of stuff like word choice or idioms in the translated lyrics but these ones are fun because they’re explicitly about overhead wires
“Steh unter Spannung”
I’ve seen the translation given as “I’m a live wire” but the more literal one seems to be “stand under tension/power/voltage”. “Tension” is often used in place of “voltage” especially outside of English, but there’s a fun double meaning with trains specifically. The allusion to voltage/power in overhead wire is obvious, but  literal catenary wire tension is also SO important specifically in rail electrification.  The wire has to be tight and straight enough to make proper contact with the pantograph (and getting the upwards pressure on those is also important).  Europe has mostly reasonably modern lines with adjustable weights to keep wire tension constant but the northeast US has HUGE issues with outdated systems with fixed wires that sag in the heat (then get snagged on pantographs and torn down) or snap in the cold when they shrink/expand.
“Ein Griff von mir” (A grip of mine)
“Holt den Blitz aus der Leitung,” (Takes the lightning out of the wire)
Also seems to be a direct reference to pantograph pressure/contact with overhead lines, similar to the English version of this line.  There’s a strong hand/arm association with pantographs in general due to their design, modern ones bend in arm-like ways and “touch” the wire in a very particular way.
Also this is probably just wild coincidence but “Griff” makes me laugh because Zaine Griff was the workshop Electra.

as ive been pondering lately about how i would write my oc doctor incarnation if i could just magically make a season of dr who, ive been thinking about how the series writers have dealt with or not dealt with the character's internality and what types of feeling they portray them having or skirting around, like i feel like sometimes dr who as a Thing kind of weaves around the dr's genuine feelings as a person? im always interested in when i read one of the novels and it has doctor pov and you get more vivid descriptions of their personal thoughts and feelings, there's an energy in the series on and off of idk, like, ppl almost avoiding the idea of this character being genuine and emotionally vulnerable esp when exploring their personal wants and relationships and how they think of their own feelings in this regard, and occasionally also an avoidance of really exploring their thoughts in general I suppose in order to maintain their mystique and heroic invulnerability but also I guess to avoid being inconsistent or too conventional w this kind of insane and mysterious alien character who could be lying about what they say about themselves at any time. but yeah i always think about how i would write them if i was just thinking about them as a person first and foremost without limiting what theyre allowed to explicitly think bout and i feel and its just fun to consider. lots of my thoughts are about their queerness and interpersonal relationships bc im gay lol, but also often their morality and passionate care for others and their perpetual outsider status

interesting to think about how constantine isn't commonly read as being the most morally upright of characters, and that's generally a fair assessment. but at the same time he can still be a surprisingly ethical character, particularly in terms of the values he holds synonymous with being a good community member.
a couple examples of (what i think are) his most consistently held values throughout the hellblazer series:
constantine feels very strongly about things like defending people's bodily autonomy and showing kindness & compassion towards society's more vulnerable demographics, especially kids & unhoused people.
he frequently & sincerely upholds the basic principles of xenia (showing hospitality towards foreigners, guests, and anyone whose fate is in your hands), and possesses a deep, innate sense of justice that he is unafraid to uphold when he feels it necessary to do so.
he personally values survival above honor but still has a healthy appreciation for people that are committed to a code,
he respects integrity more than he'd respect a good liar (even if he fucking hates you, at least you're being true to yourself; can't help it if yourself is just a prick),
and he is CONSTANTLY PLAGUED by a deeply personal sense of social responsibility to try and nip potential threats to the world, to his city, or to his friends in the bud if he thinks it might be within his capabilities to do so.
of course, it's key to note that constantine's code of ethics was also founded primarily in accordance with the principles of '70s-'80s counterculture + still largely abides by the social beliefs of the same-era punk community, and thus also includes more subjectively-judged tenets such as challenging the establishment, defying the government, protecting individual liberties, taking direct action in support of your community, putting people above possessions at every turn, and actively addressing social issues wherever / whenever you encounter them. so he's not always viewed by other characters (particularly upper-class bootlicking ones) as being particularly ethical. doesn't change the fact that constantine still adamantly maintains certain major ethical principles in accordance with the social systems he inhabits and was raised in.
#( ooc. ) OUT OF CIGS.#( character study. ) A WALKING PLAGUE OF A MAN.#don't @ me for referencing xenia si spurrier has nothing to do with this. i just love the concept#i had a very interesting twofold coincidence that led to this post (well. interesting to me probably very mundane all told)#was rereading hellblazer 12 and when ritchie demanded that john find him a body to hop into? john's response was verbatim:#'a body? jesus mate. hang about. don't you think there might be a question of ethics here?'#and i giggled at that a little bc john constantine? ethics? come on now. but it made sense given his own struggles w/ autonomy#but then i saw a post later on that read 'let's do something unethical together. just for fun' and thought it was silly#and when i went to reblog it for john i stopped and thought about it and realized. no he wouldn't find that very fun actually#cue rabbit hole into morality vs ethics with a side jaunt into what the hell is moral nihilism#plus a dash of key recurring themes in hellblazer (bodily autonomy. standing up to injustice. compassion towards the vulnerable.)#i may be getting ahead of myself but i now think compounding morality + ethics into a uniform behavioral monolith#or else mistaking one for the other. Might Be a very big reason why john gets SO mischaracterized in later dc adaptations#like yes! he often has to resort to behavior / making decisions that are (to us) Obviously Morally Wrong in order to save the world#sacrificing gary lester to a demon. leaving ritchie trapped in a computer. lying to get baron winters' help against the brujeria.#and yes! that Morally Wrong behavior can and does involve causing harm to the people around him (albeit usually inadvertently)#Doesn't! Mean! He Has! No Sense! of Decency! or Empathy! or Right! or Wrong! just because he Had to Resort to an Immoral Act!#there were still Valid or at least Understandable Ethical Reasons behind ALL THREE EXAMPLES i just listed above!!!#that's why two of those examples are GUT-WRENCHING!! bc he betrayed his moral beliefs in support of his ethical principles!!#i can punch someone in the face and still feel compelled by my cultural norms to help a little old lady cross the street right after!!#upon reflection: whoa nelly. i fear i am getting needlessly heated over this. Anyways#if you've followed me for a bit you're already aware of how i feel about the continued mischaracterization of constantine in media lmao#i've said my piece. i've done my morality and ethics homework. i can rest now#and i'll say upfront that it would be Extremely funny if i wrote all this out + later find out i've been mixing up the two. bc it would be

my cybersecurity courses in uni are like 15 years out of date and it drives me insane. and i dont mean in the "haha im so smart, i already know what a buffer overflow is thanks 2 tomert scotwald", i mean in the "they made this lab for android so long ago that when i follow the directions to the letter the app crashes since package naming schemes have changed and this attribute doesn't exist anymore" kinda way and it makes me want to beat powerful people with very heavy hammers

Theory with no coherent proof on my part: brenner only visibly ages rapidly when a portal is open.
#brenner 'dies' very early on after rhe portal opens in s1 so we dont see the effects#but in s4 he looks considerably older.#then in s5 he apparently has a whole bald cap - portal that opened at the end of s4 has been open for approx 1.5 years#theres the tie in to the ptsd/trauma metaphor with the UD representing repressed memories#or repressed memories aka 'lost time' in someone memory#the whole thing where ppl with traumatic childhoods cant remember their childhoods very well and it comes back sooner or later#i wonder if there is a supernatural tie into that in st? like when a portal opens to the UD all that 'lost time' suddenly is allowed back#into the light aka out of the subconscious and into the conscious re flashbacks and memory retrieval#i dont believe NINA at all beyond the flashbacks el has before brenner got involved#bc it seems to me that brenner possibly took advtg of els vulnerable state to possibly manipulate her memory retrieval#which irl has been a long time point of controversy which is psychologists convinving patients that they have memories of trauma#they dont actually have. which idk how valid that is but brenner is a psychologist so if anyone he could find a way#also when the 'lost time' comes back to the surface brenner ages bc of those time loops begin to unravel. the real years brenner has lived#take its toll rather than him de aging as time loops back again to the beginning#very dr who of him. or at least every time he dies its another time loop thats created except from our perspective as the audience we#wouldnt know. because we are only watching from a set linear timeline (1983-1986) and we dont see the time line resetting itself#since all the timelines are similar enough with only small differences ('easter eggs')#tying this into the wheelers- their name literally means 'creator/operator of wheels' aka time loops. so are they The Source?#with the subtext surrounding 'truths' and 'lies' in ST i dont necessarily believe all timeloops are created equal#one must be the 'true' timeline while the others must be 'lies'. aka lonnie saying how people sometimes make things up 'to cope'#that and the heavy subtext behind hawkins being a cursed town. not necessarily anywhere else in the US#and how you can only open portals in hawkins per alexei#makes me thinks these arent legitimate timeloops. like time isnt physically looping back and rerunning events bc otherwise it wouldnt only#affect one small town in indiana. also we dont see the UD/the MF be able to affect time itself but rather ppls perception of time aka#mind control and memories. meaning that could it be time isnt actually looping but rather everyone in hawkins has their memories wiped and#recreated every time there is an inciting incident (which is unknown)#^this doesnt really explain how brenner is able to revive every time he dies unless brenner is actually an admin of this system and lives#'outside' the time loop. so. brenner is a video game character actually whos actual player is blissfully safe from harm outside of the the#computer screen#isnt this just the plot of the matrix. with 'the source' (the central computing core aka the wheelers?) and keymakers etc etc

i often run a mod that makes chickens explode on death because its funny to me but once i tried to run it in tandem with touring carriages. whats awesome about touring carriages is that in addition to makinfg carriage travel a fully renderwd sequenxe it also adds a carriage to riverwood.
i get into the riverwood carriage. it runs over the town chicken and it explodes, killing the horse instantly. i am thus robbed of control, stuck in a sideways cart much like a glitched helgen intro indefinitely until i load a save.
skyrim is the best game of all time and modding it only improves the experience

It wiped a city off the map in British Columbia, it's devistating the Carolina's right now. The heat deaths in England are a result of this. There's climate deaths in Siberia! This is happening everywhere. It's not going to look like a collapse, it is us deep into the crumbles, where vulnerable people from the global South are being hit so much worse, and it's happening here. Vulnerable people are being killed right now and there is no escape.
white americans when you tell them that the idea of climate change as an impending disaster is a reductive first world perspective because it’s a tangible reality for many in the global south already:

25 ways to be a little more punk in 2025
Cut fast fashion - buy used, learn to mend and/or make your own clothes, buy fewer clothes less often so you can save up for ethically made quality
Cancel subscriptions - relearn how to pirate media, spend $10/month buying a digital album from a small artist instead of on Spotify, stream on free services since the paid ones make you watch ads anyway
Green your community - there's lots of ways to do this, like seedbombing or joining a community garden or organizing neighborhood trash pickups
Be kind - stop to give directions, check on stopped cars, smile at kids, let people cut you in line, offer to get stuff off the high shelf, hold the door, ask people if they're okay
Intervene - learn bystander intervention techniques and be prepared to use them, even if it feels awkward
Get closer to your food - grow it yourself, can and preserve it, buy from a farmstand, learn where it's from, go fishing, make it from scratch, learn a new ingredient
Use opensource software - try LibreOffice, try Reaper, learn Linux, use a free Photoshop clone. The next time an app tries to force you to pay, look to see if there's an opensource alternative
Make less trash - start a compost, be mindful of packaging, find another use for that plastic, make it a challenge for yourself!
Get involved in local politics - show up at meetings for city council, the zoning commission, the park district, school boards; fight the NIMBYs that always show up and force them to focus on the things impacting the most vulnerable folks in your community
DIY > fashion - shake off the obsession with pristine presentation that you've been taught! Cut your own hair, use homemade cosmetics, exchange mani/pedis with friends, make your own jewelry, duct tape those broken headphones!
Ditch Google - Chromium browsers (which is almost all of them) are now bloated spyware, and Google search sucks now, so why not finally make the jump to Firefox and another search like DuckDuckGo? Or put the Wikipedia app on your phone and look things up there?
Forage - learn about local edible plants and how to safely and sustainably harvest them or go find fruit trees and such accessible to the public.
Volunteer - every week tutoring at the library or once a month at the humane society or twice a year serving food at the soup kitchen, you can find something that matches your availability
Help your neighbors - which means you have to meet them first and find out how you can help (including your unhoused neighbors), like elderly or disabled folks that might need help with yardwork or who that escape artist dog belongs to or whether the police have been hassling people sleeping rough
Fix stuff - the next time something breaks (a small appliance, an electronic, a piece of furniture, etc.), see if you can figure out what's wrong with it, if there are tutorials on fixing it, or if you can order a replacement part from the manufacturer instead of trashing the whole thing
Mix up your transit - find out what's walkable, try biking instead of driving, try public transit and complain to the city if it sucks, take a train instead of a plane, start a carpool at work
Engage in the arts - go see a local play, check out an art gallery or a small museum, buy art from the farmer's market
Go to the library - to check out a book or a movie or a CD, to use the computers or the printer, to find out if they have other weird rentals like a seed library or luggage, to use meeting space, to file your taxes, to take a class, to ask question
Listen local - see what's happening at local music venues or other events where local musicians will be performing, stop for buskers, find a favorite artist, and support them
Buy local - it's less convenient than online shopping or going to a big box store that sells everything, but try buying what you can from small local shops in your area
Become unmarketable - there are a lot of ways you can disrupt your online marketing surveillance, including buying less, using decoy emails, deleting or removing permissions from apps that spy on you, checking your privacy settings, not clicking advertising links, and...
Use cash - go to the bank and take out cash instead of using your credit card or e-payment for everything! It's better on small businesses and it's untraceable
Give what you can - as capitalism churns on, normal shmucks have less and less, so think about what you can give (time, money, skills, space, stuff) and how it will make the most impact
Talk about wages - with your coworkers, with your friends, while unionizing! Stop thinking about wages as a measure of your worth and talk about whether or not the bosses are paying fairly for the labor they receive
Think about wealthflow - there are a thousand little mechanisms that corporations and billionaires use to capture wealth from the lower class: fees for transactions, interest, vendor platforms, subscriptions, and more. Start thinking about where your money goes, how and where it's getting captured and removed from our class, and where you have the ability to cut off the flow and pass cash directly to your fellow working class people
