Day 29: Fate

Dazai’s never been one to believe in trivial things like fate. There was never any need when he was a master at playing his cards right to get what he wanted. 

So why bother putting his belief or trust in something that humans can’t even decide is true or not?

He’s heard all the stories – soulmates, red string, marks; was never convinced of them for a second without solid proof – and yet he can’t quite believe what he’s seeing before his eyes right now.

There, attached to his pinky finger with a cute little bow that is failing its job at quelling his rising horror, is the red string of fate he truly didn’t even consider could be real, flickering in and out of view as it reacts to his own ability.

But the worst part?

He knows exactly where it’s leading to, the same direction his eyes always wander in when he’s not paying attention or when his thoughts get the best of him and travel down memory lane to times of content comfort and feral fun.

He glances up.

The rest of the ADA office is in a state of shock as well, pinky fingers in the air as their owners examine them this way and that. At least he’s not the only one. Atsushi’s string appears to point to someone closeby, its direction heading near vertically downward. 

Not one string travels in the same direction, which Dazai considers a relief, until the president walks out of his office with a string pointing in the same direction as Dazai’s.

Not so relieving. Nor information he really wanted to know, either.

No reports have come in about an ability causing mass outbreaks of this phenomenon, though it’s confirmed it is one thanks to Dazai’s ability spazzing out. 

He knows what he must do.

Be a good Agency member and stay to figure out what is happening and how to fix it.

But, in his defense, it’s hard to concentrate when the bright red thing in the corner of his vision keeps flashing as if to say “Look here! Look here! A reminder of what you lost!”

So he stands up and walks out the door to the protests of one Kunikida and the complaints of “Why does he get to go?!” from one Ranpo.

He’s only down a few blocks from the Agency waiting at a crosswalk when the shimmering red string shifts directions, fast.

Ah, always impatient, that one.

He waits a moment even as the pedestrian light turns green, watching as the string goes from 12 o’clock to 2 o’clock.

Distantly, he can hear the telltale engine of a motorcycle speeding down the streets.

His best guess is an old safehouse located in between the Agency and Mafia, unused since before his defection.

So with that, he makes his way towards it.

The shining pink motorcycle parked in the alley next to the apartment complex creates a strange mix of nostalgia and anxiety in his chest.

It only serves as a reminder that his little fateful predicament is very much real.

He can’t run away – he’s sure the constant little pain in his side has been watching the string to anticipate his incoming self, and he’s sure said constant little pain in his side would throw an absolute fit in the form of showing up at the Agency if he were to run away – but he can’t bring himself to walk up the stairs located on the side of the building.

As much as he’s always known that they are indelibly fated, he never had something tangible to prove it – only trust and the recurrence of the redhead in his life has told him it’s true.

From somewhere up above come three bangs against the stairwell’s metal handrail, annoyance clear in the way there’s barely any space between each individual one.

Truly impatient.

Dazai sighs, beginning his dreaded trek up the seven flights of stairs to his other dreaded reason for being.

By the time he makes it all the way up – slightly out of breath because dear Lord, stairs are not his friend – he’s met with the beautiful sight of one tiny, angry chibi holding up his ring finger where a matching little red bow to Dazai’s is tied as if he’s flipping Dazai off.

“Took you so long, waste of bandages?” Chuuya scowls. He doesn’t even bother waiting for a response, already turning on his heel to walk down to their safehouse’s door.

“Why hello to you too, chibi~” This time, not turning around, Chuuya does flip him off over his shoulder. The little red string follows the movements, swinging lazily between them. At the safehouse’s door, Chuuya lets himself in, barely kicking the door open enough for Dazai to slip in behind him.

The atmosphere inside the apartment is… unique, in its own special way. Still /them/, Double Black, but now something else, something outside of their infamous duo name. Just the two of them, Dazai and Chuuya, Chuuya and Dazai, /partners/.

Chuuya’s already prepped wine for the occasion – something from his personal collection he keeps on hand in his office – and washed two old glasses for them. 

Dazai makes his way towards the well-worn couch further inside the apartment. Knife slashes from their teenhood shenanigans adorn it, along with an unfortunate layer of dust. 

“Make yourself useful” is all he gets as a warning sign for the wet rag flung at his head. Without looking, he catches it and actually does what Chuuya’s asked of him for once.

He’d really rather not be forced to inhale the dust as Chuuya’s punishment for his disagreeance.

Once that’s finished, he tosses the dirty rag back to Chuuya, who lets it fall to the floor with a dodge that has the glasses of wine in his hands tilting dangerously. He seethes, “Bastard!”

Dazai merely plops down on the couch, getting comfortable before his space will soon be invaded. The little bow on his finger continues its constant flickers. Still a nuisance, much like the person he’s blaming it for existing on, but he’s at least gotten used to it now. 

Trailing his eyes along its path, he watches as it goes from blinking to solid shortly after, all the way to the other hand that’s currently offering him a glass of wine, the little bow wrapped tight around a strong finger.

“Fuck’s with you? Take it, or I’m dropping it,” Chuuya complains, arm dipping lower and lower before Dazai takes it gracelessly. The wine tips towards the edge dangerously, splashing back down to the core of it with a plop as Dazai sharply rolls his wrist once.

“How do I know you didn’t poison it?” The brunet asks lazily, already bringing the glass to his lips.

Chuuya snorts, not bothering to answer as he takes a sip of his own, only making sure to watch Dazai do the same.

“Hell of a way to get us to talk, huh?” The redhead starts, only a sliver of hesitancy in his voice, Dazai the sole person with the ability to detect it. 

“I wouldn’t put it past Mori to have set this up,” he responds. He focuses on looking up towards the ceiling. “Whether it was for us or himself is the real question.”

From the corner of his eye, he sees Chuuya roll his eyes, a knowing smirk on his lips. 

The silence hangs around them, then. Dazai feels no need to speak. He’s sure Chuuya feels the same.

Until, “Well?”

He snaps his head to look at the other. “Well, what?”

“What are we?” Chuuya raises an eyebrow.

Dazai raises one back, incredulous. “Partners?”

“No shit, Sherlock,” Chuuya says, gesturing with his free hand between them. Then, he switches the glass between his hands to raise up his other one, ring finger and red bow on full display. He emphasizes, “This.”

With only a moment of uncertainty, Dazai slowly says, “...Partners?”

That was not the correct answer, according to Chuuya’s look that says he wishes he had a pillow to scream into right now.

He hears a whispered “Let’s try this again,” before “What do you think this–” the redhead wiggles his ring finger, pushes it further into his face “-- means?”

With more certainty, he nods along. “Partners.”

Chuuya throws his head into the back of the couch. Finally, with a beleaguered sigh, he asks, “By definition, what does ‘partners’ mean, and what does it mean to you?”

“We’re associated together in the same activity, Double Black?”

“And the other definition?”

Now Dazai’s confused, tilting his head to an extreme angle. “We’re married??”

Chuuya facepalms. He doesn’t even get mad that a couple droplets of wine get on his pants from the action. Looking back up, “No, dumbass, what does it mean to /you/?”

With full confidence, Dazai dips his head down with a smile, “We are partners.” Glee fills him as he sees Chuuya’s eye twitch at that.

The redhead moves a hand to get him to keep going.

“...whoooo trust each other with their lives?” A nod and another movement to continue. “And who are constant thorns in each other’s sides?” Another gesture along with the mumble of ‘you can say that again. “And who are the most partneriest of partners that have ever partnered.”

“Now I know you’re just fucking with me.” Chuuya knocks back a large sip, wiping his mouth with his hand afterward. “Can we be serious about this, or no?”

Dazai squints. He draws his syllables together on the first word as he says, “Mmm maybe. What do I get out of it?”

“That depends on what you want.”

“What does Chuuya want?”

“For you to be honest with me.”

Snapping his fingers with a look of forlorn, Dazai mourns, “Shoot, I don’t think that’ll work out.”

“Then I guess you don’t get the gift I got you.”

“Gift?” He perks up. Then, “Wait, from a slug? Bleh, no thank you.”

Chuuya flicks his forehead for it. “Do you want kisses or no?”

/Now/ Dazai’s suspicious. “No…?” He doesn’t sound convinced even to his own ears.

“Tsk, tsk. And even after I practiced these past four years.”

Dazai straightens, pushing into Chuuya’s space, voice hard. “/Who–/”

Soft, wine-stained lips on his – warm and not practiced like someone claimed, but Dazai doesn’t care ‘cause it’s like a missing, forgotten piece of the puzzle finally clicked into place for them. Chuuya’s slot perfectly with his, and it’s all Dazai’s been missing these past four years of their partnership.

He can feel Chuuya smile against him before the other pulls back. “Well?”

Dazai hums, prolonging his answer as he leans forward to place his glass on the coffee table in front of them, taking and placing Chuuya’s too when it’s shoved at him.

“You’re a little liar.” Dazai pushes back up, pecking Chuuya’s lips with a smile on his own face as he brings his arms around Chuuya’s waist. “And the best partner ever.”

He dives back in.

Dazai’s never been one to believe in fate – even with the red string tied and flickering on his finger connected to the man in front of him – he doesn’t know if it’s real. But he does know that he and Chuuya are partners in every form, together now and for the rest of their lives.

kunikida's monday, wednesday, and friday 12-5 tutoring sessions have been going on for a longgg time

anyone is welcome, you don't have to come to every session

when atsushi joins, kunikida warns him about akutagawa, adding "run away from him, except if its on mondays, wednesdays, and fridays 12-5"

atsushi of course joins them (he also has the unfair advantage that everyone in the ada are helping him out but eh perks of family or whatever)

some people only come once in a while -- like chuuya, who comes in once every other week to fill in gaps in his education but doesn't need classes like that (idk he hasnt had formal education but man knows physics with ease so its really just filling small gaps, or pursuing random areas of curiosity for him ya know)

when no one can show up, dazai shows up and kunikida explains to him concepts that he mightve known but not the technical explanations or definitions

Best Soukoku Fanfics That Bring Immense Nostalgia!

Someone on YouTube asked for recommendations for Soukoku fics so how could I give up such an opportunity to share some of my all time favourites?! Some of them will make you cry. Some of them will make you smile. But most importantly, the immense wave of nostalgia you’ll feel after reading some of these fics are surreal! 1. At first, it was the plan, that OG!ADA and BEAST! ADA will work together, with both Fukuzawas sharing the title of president.

However, two problems arise.

№1. Half of the time, Ranpos refused to work together. Sometimes, because they were arguing, who solved the case faster. Other days they were fighting because they can't decide, how to share snacks. Then they would fight over your attention.

Both Fukuzawas have to break the quarrels between Ranpos. But they would start again later. You also could act as a mediator, Ranpos did listen to you, but you can't just spend all day in the Bureau's office.

№2. BEAST! Akutagawa, OG! Dazai and BEAST! Oda have troubles working with each other.

BEAST! Akutagawa still doesn't like Dazai (any version), OG! Akutagawa will try to pick up a fight with BEAST! Akutagawa for his disrespect, which doesn't make BEAST! Akutagawa likes Dazai.

BEAST! Oda still can't believe, that another him is friends with OG! Dazai.

OG! Dazai, out of respect of BEAST! Dazai's situation keep his distance from BEAST! Oda.

At the end, BEAST! ADA agreed to establish their own detective agency. And BEAST! Kunikida will be a President of the second agency, at least on paper, so people won't question, why Fukuzawa Yukichi opened two agencies.

BEAST! Armed Detective Agency will be known as Insight Investigation Agency.

2. It took a lot of discussion, but Port Mafia and BEAST! Mafia joined forces. With some rules for BEAST! Port Mafia

Rule №1. BEAST! Dazai can be executive, Black Lizard or took any Mafia's job he likes, even leave the mafia any time he wants, but, in return, he agreed to never took Port Mafia boss position.

Rule №2. BEAST! Chuuya will have to be a sub-executive, together with Rimbaud. He can become proper executive, when OG! Chuuya either become Boss, and gave BEAST! Chuuya executive spot, or if OG! Chuuya leave mafia and agreed to give BEAST! Chuuya executive spot.

Rule №3. BEAST! Chuuya works together with Verlaine and Flags. They try to help BEAST! Chuuya with his temper.

Rule №4. BEAST! Atsushi and BEAST! Kyouka will work under Kouyou. OG! Akutagawa is prohibited from going near BEAST! Atsushi without good reason. Because OG! Akutagawa doesn't trust BEAST! Atsushi in doing good job protecting you. Fun fact, OG! Akutagawa trusts OG! Atsushi, that he will protect you.

BEAST! PM are fine with new jobs. However, BEAST! Dazai does think from tome to time about leaving Port Mafia.

And, yes, they aren't terrorizing anyone. Except your hair. Because:

... If it makes things better, sometimes, Fyodors play with Shibusawas', Bram's or Nikolai's hair. The only difference, that with them Fyodors do it automatically, when they are thinking about something. With you, Fyodors do it on their own violation.

5. Hunting Dogs became bodyguards for hire. Tachihara works both as bodyguard and as mafioso.

As for Teruko... It's slightly complicated.

Teruko will go to school. However, Teruko wasn't to fond of this idea. Her ability makes her mind quite developed. Because of that, Teruko is much smarter, then average twelve-year-old, and also acts very mature. Teruko just thinks, that she can do something else, beside going to school and keeping an eye on kids.

However, she also can't use her ability to age her up to be a bodyguard with the rest of Hunting Dogs.

HEADCANNON ABOUT TERUKO'S ABILITY

Her forms, that makes her older, require great amount of energy. Teruko can maintain them for a few hours, but, after that, she will "reduce" to her normal age and will need time to be able to use her ability again.

Teruko helps you with training, and she is a good couch. So, you decided to use Internet.

theorizing abt beast kyoka

so firstly, she's dressed so similarly to how koyo dresses, she has that mantle, the obi sash, the hair pins on either sides of her head, etc.

now I'd love to consider how there is no mention of koyo in beast (manga), kyoka herself doesn't have much character but hear me out what if koyo managed to get herself out of the mafia? that's why kyoka's clothes are similar to hers, be she's taking the place that was reserved for her.

They are paralleling too, in og!bsd, koyo gets captured by the ada but in beast it's kyoka, in og!bsd koyo's admirer gets killed but in beast atsushi gets into the orphanage w mori and also kyoka (since dazai told him to retire alongside kyoka), he did what koyo and her admirer couldn't, which proves that kyoka is in koyo's place here, reminder that koyo was only 14 when she tried to escape, beast kyoka herself was only 12.

the clothing choices

So like mentioned, she wears a mantle like koyo but one thing that differentiates is that koyo has blood splatter/tree branch like design on the end of her mantle whilst kyoka has hers tainted with black; her background is probs similar to og!kyoka, her parents were killed, she got into the mafia and all, so I think that her mantle is stained bc in the og! bsd, koyo gives kyoka the documents that show that her parents murder wasn't her fault but in beast we don't have koyo so there's no one to prove to her that she isn't at fault, so the mantle is soaked w blood be she believes that she's the cause of her parents' death.

in og au, kyoka has sprouts on her kimono to show her growing nature but in beast, kyoka has merely some squiggly lines (showing the flow of wind) and a few small florals/bits of snow on hers which resonates two things: 1. if those are bits of snow it can be be of demon snow, it's the symbolism that she thinks her ability, demon snow is the cause of her parents death. (like I said earlier) 2. if those are small flowers it is to show us that she is like them flowing into the direction life leads her to and adapting into it no matter what.

also, abt koyo, in og bsd she's close to mori but in beast, mori is an orphanage director while dazai takes his place, n atsushi is close to dazai, kyoka is close to atsushi therefore kyoka's in koyo's place technically as koyo must've escaped the pm the way ango betrayed them (somewhat similarly.). it's like chuuya-koyo-mori trio but in beast.

Dazai is such a supportive partner. it's the little things for him like telling you you're appreciated and loved and surprising you with gifts (when he actually has money lmao)

he doesn't strike me as the type of partner who pushes all the "but how can you think so lowly of yourself? you're amazing" on you. he knows fully well that healing is a long process but he's ready to support you all the way

when you're having especially tough time, and not only with your family but also in general, he's always there for you.

forever thinking abt these two panels. theyre literally one chapter after the other (11 and 12 respectively) but theyre sooo different. the first being chuuyas pov of him, everything abt the page layout makes him look small. all that empty space up top with the halo-y blackness focusing you down and caging him in, with the speech bubble (NOT his own words. dazai himself is silent here) above him and the ghostly figures behind him. and hes clutching at his coat with the bandages so high on his neck we cant see skin at all, wearing his ada clothes beneath moris coat.

flip to akus pov ONE CHAPTER LATER. and hes this looming figure, his own words beside him. literally his head goes over the top of the panel to make him look taller. his hand is concealed by the coat (moreso even than chuuyas pov) but its a powerful stance, not a defensive one. keeps bits of him hidden without looking like hes hiding. and hes in his pm suit, part of his neck visible above the bandages.

So I read a skk and sskk swap fic a while back, and while I wasn’t really fond of Atsushi’s characterization (Felt a bit too extreme for Atsushi, even in the PM), I can’t get my own version of it out of my head

An 11 year old Atsushi getting found in a cage by Mori, thinking he’s finally free, only to be collared like a dog. Yet he still maintains his kindness, his heart

A 13 year old Akutagawa who ends up partnered with Atsushi, who sees his soft, kind smiles and gentle empathy and falls a little bit in love

A 13 year old Atsushi finally snapping under the weight of being Mori’s favorite, of Mori’s experiments (because Mori is a doctor and Atsushi is a medical miracle, it’s only common sense that he’d see how far the boy could be pushed) and threatening to kill him

(A 13 year old Atsushi who has spent enough time around Mori to know he can no longer care, because if Mori saw even a second of weakness, a way to exploit Atsushi in any way, he’d end up back on the table)

A 12 Chuuya who get taken in by the mafia and put under Atsushi’s tutelage, as one God Vessel to another (you can pry God Vessel Atsushi from my cold dead hands), and hopes and prays from the love and affection and understanding he so desires only to get hard, hard not cruel, Chuuya’s only hope for something more, training and cold shoulders

A 14 year old Atsushi who sees this small red head, so obviously desperate for affection in a way Atsushi can’t help but relate to, and shuts down a little more, because he knows what Mori is trying to do and he won’t have it. So he helps in the only way he feels he can, by training the boy to survive and keeping him at arms length, because no matter how strong he may be, Mori would not hesitate to put him on the chopping block to get Atsushi back under his thumb

An 18 year old Akutagawa cursing Atsushi’s name once the news that Atsushi defected reached him. And Akutagawa who is bitter and heartbroken and angry, and has been since those soft smiles and kind sympathy were traded for blank faces and an icy demeanor because how dare Atsushi make him fall in love only to tear it away

A 20 year old Atsushi fishing a kid out of a river on his off day, and being able to tell immediately he has an ability and listening to his story and offering him a home

An 18 year old Dazai, who fails another suicide attempt only to be saved by Atsushi, in more ways than one. Who gets given a purpose in the agency and Atsushi’s soft smile and finally feels like giving life a chance

A 22 year old Akutagawa who gets handed the case for Atsushi’s bounty because’you we’re the one who knew his capabilities best.’ (Because Mori did not trust he cared more about the mafia than Atsushi) and sees his old partner for the first time in 4 years only to see that smile, the one he fell for o so many years ago, directed at someone else

An 18 year old Chuuya who sees Atsushi and Dazai, who sees some random kid get all the affection and attention he’s ever wanted, and rages

A 20 year old Atsushi who gets confronted by his past, whoch whole never a secret, was so far removed from his current life, and feels his heart break. Because he knows that Akutagawa and Chuuya’s anger are no one’s fault but his own. Who cares so deeply then, however buried, and still does now and wants so desperately to fix it but feels it is far too late

A 18 year old Dazai who ends up in this weird rivalry with this short red head slug from the mafia who wants to take away what finally gave Dazai’s life meaning, but gets pushed to the side when he saves a snap assassin who doesn’t want to kil anymore

I could go on about this forever but I’ll leave it here for now with some small notes

The whole collared thing with Atsushi is based on a fic I read which might have been based on the Beast light novel (I haven’t read it) where the collar is used as a way to control Atsushi’s ability to a lesser extent then All Men are Created Equal by basically being a torture device and constantly making Atsushi heal himself, which he only allows himself to take off when he becomes a manner of the agency and is granted a greater control

For ages, in my mind, Akutagawa is two years older than Atsushi who is two years older than Dazai and Chuuya because it adds to the angst at factor but it also messes up the timeline a bit

I am debating whether to switch Kyouka and Odasaku bc Dazai and Atsushi already have their No kill assassins but that means killing Kyouka so I left it vague

I also left everyone but Akutagawa’s feelings vague. Whether Dazai and Chuuya’s feelings for Atsushi are romantic in nature is ambiguous and this story, told by Atsushi in my mind, leads to Atsushi being so emotionally stunted when it comes to love he cannot differentiate between the types for himself

(I wanted to leave Akutagawa’s feelings vague too but the main thing that tied sskk together in cannon was Dazai and that wasn’t happening here so I decided they needed a little something)

((I also feel there is definitely a possibility for Atsushi to end up with Kunikida or maybe even Ranpo for funsies and all))
