So we all know by now that Dazai is comfortable enough around Chuuya to show nervousness/worry.

Enough times for Chuuya to pick up on that pattern. The pattern, may I remind you, that doesn't have evident correlation to either nervousness or worry to most people. One that can even be interpreted as misplaced given the situation.

Which means that Dazai has done this in front of Chuuya so often, that Chuuya at first was hella confused, before he finally made a connection between when and why it happens. And still remembered that connection after four years of separation. Which gets us to my point:

What if this isn't the only emotion Dazai displays weirdly?

What if he has multiple unconventional patterns he displays for sadness, frustration, content, or disgust? The times he really feels them, and they become too strong for him to just deal with normally? What if these are the only times he's actually being genuine with his emotions?

And Chuuya is the only one who is familiar with them all?

Dazai would be jumping rope and Chuuya would be like, "quit sulking, let's get icecream"

Dazai hanging upside down on the couch and Chuuya going, "It's okay, mackerel. You can cry."

Dazai actually crying, full on heart-wrenching sobs, and Chuuya unironically going, "What, good news?"

It's just... comforting, for one person in Dazai's life to read him like a book. Everyone else would look at him like he's crazy, displaying wrong emotions/behaviors at the wrong time, but Chuuya knows that it's just how he processes feeling properly, and thus he's the only one Dazai can count on to put things into context and understand, which makes him display them even more openly.

Because Chuuya never shamed him for his quirks, as much as Dazai never did his.

Fukuzawa's so fucking funny to me i cant even. He's insane. Raised up in a state sanctioned military school. Raised to master several martial arts styles and taught to master a sword since he was a kid. Didn’t go to war because he hated the army hierarchy. Stopped being a government’s catspaw because he realised liked killing people too much and Thats A Bit Fucked Up. Mind you, not that he was killing people, that he liked it. He can get so angry that people stop their cars on the road mid-movement on the road in horror at his rage. He's a freak magnet. He meets Ranpo and thinks of 50 different ways of killing him. His act of helping a 14 year old with no job, no home and no parents is to offer him assistance as a bodyguard. Free for once. He's insane. He then builds up an entire agency of gifted people and gets into several wars to assist this kid. He killed the Minister of Justice’s father. This is never addressed beyond the guy framing the Agency for mass murder (including his own). He likes cats. His main shipping partners are the maybe-pedophile main villan of the thing they're directly enemies with and also his also-main enemy ex-bff military dude with a time travelling stabby stick who kills his not-grandkids. His childhood friend of thirteen years started to hate him because Fukuzawa refused to fight a full on fucking military war with him. After refusing to fight a war he decided to skip a step and just become an assassin. He thinks you should’nt critisice other people’s food choices. He steals all of his other ex-husband’s kids in their divorce battles. He wears a haori, yukata, tabi and zori plus is a trained swordsman in modern day japan. His afformentioned ex-bff wants to make him into the leader of the world because he thinks Fukuzawa’s an uncorruptable person. Fukuzawa liked murdering people.

Chapter One

False Equilibrium

Time does not pass here, but thought does.

It becomes a slow kind of erosion: memory rubbing against memory until their edges blur. At first, Fyodor tries to sort them — fact from dream, past from intrusion. But after some indeterminate number of days (if “days” still meant anything), he stops. Precision is wasted in a place without contrast.

He remembers how to pray before he remembers his own age.

There is no sound unless Nikolai speaks. The silence is oppressive but precise — not absence, but restraint. Like something enormous breathing just beyond perception.

Today, Nikolai is lying flat on his back, tossing a playing card in the air. Fyodor doesn’t ask where he found it. Questions like that aren’t real here.

“It’s funny,” Nikolai says. “I thought I’d miss things. Sunlight. Cities. Screaming. But honestly? I don’t. Isn’t that horrible?”

Fyodor doesn’t respond. He’s seated against the wall, back straight, hands folded in his lap. Nikolai’s voice reaches him as if through cotton — muffled, too soft, too close.

“You’re awfully quiet today,” Nikolai says, still looking at the ceiling. “Plotting? Or finally coming undone?”

“I don’t believe you’re real,” Fyodor says.

Nikolai laughs — short, sharp. “That makes two of us.”

The card flips again, higher this time, and Fyodor watches it twist midair. It’s the joker. Of course.

“You talk too much for a hallucination,” he murmurs.

“And you think too much for a corpse,” Nikolai replies. Then he sits up, quick as breath. The card never lands.

“Want to hear something fun?” he asks.

Fyodor doesn’t answer. Nikolai continues anyway. “What if this place isn’t a prison? What if it’s a mirror? And you’re just too sterile inside to break it?”

Fyodor’s expression doesn’t change. “Then you’d be my reflection.”

Nikolai grins, wide and sudden, like a slit tearing across porcelain.

“Maybe I am.”
