Okay, as per this poll I will now explain...

Yes, I ship Reylo (Rey/Ben Solo[Kylo Ren]), but...

In an AU.

To be clear up front, this is not a hard and fast ship, even in the circumstances of my AU. Sometimes I like them as a ship, sometimes I like them better as platonic soulmates. It all depends on what mood I'm in, and if I made the sequel trilogy my way, I would make it ambiguous. Maybe. Unless the actors felt it should be otherwise.

ANYWAY, after seeing a bunch of sweet Reylo fanart, I wished for a way I could ship them, and also a better explanation for Rey's unexplained ability to use the Force. So I thought, what if Rey was one of Luke's students, and she and Ben were super close, but somehow her memories got messed with, and what if that happened with Ben too, and that's why he turned to the Dark Side?

So I rewrote the entire sequel trilogy in my head, and have only written one part of it down, (go read it here), but basically the gist is: Rey's memories only got pasted over, while Ben's got rewritten (think Peeta and the highjacking). That's why Ben thinks Luke tried to kill him, and that he tried to kill the other padawans, and that Rey is dangerous.

Rey was an orphan, found and brought in by Luke, who became as a father to her. She and Ben were inseparable from the get-go, and he taught her how to fly the Falcon, how to do all her katas. He was like a big brother to her, her hero, and he promised to be her master when he got knighted.

Everyone thinks Ben Solo is dead, but after they discover he's not ("You killed my son!" "No. I was your son."), that he and Kylo Ren are actually the same person, Rey is dead set on saving him. So is Luke, as he feels certain it's his fault for leaving Ben to fight off so many, even though it was Ben who told him to take Rey and run.

Luke hopes to restore Ben's memories the way he did Rey's, but in his face-off with Kylo Ren, he takes a mortal strike to get close enough to reach his nephew. Rey witnesses this. The shock cracks through Kylo/Ben's memories, and he realizes what he has done, killing Luke. He flees, while Rey stays with Luke, who gives her his lightsaber, tells her to save Ben, tells her he was proud to have a padawan like her, maybe even says the 'you were as a daughter to me' bit out loud?

Anyway, after Ben flees, he has a total breakdown, off on some planet somewhere. But his grandfather shows up to give him some advice, yes! Anakin would be there!

Rey and Ben find each other, go off to kill Snoke and end the war (but it's Leia who gets to shoot Snoke: "That's for my son!")

Yes, Rey and Ben would have a particularly strong connection in the Force, but that wouldn't be the main point. That wouldn't be her 'superpower'. No, that would be her love for her family, which even when her memories were hidden, she missed, and it's her mission to piece her family back together again—helping Luke and Han reconcile, fighting to save Ben and the other Knights of Ren, who all turn out to be Luke's former students, making new family out of Finn and Poe. It's her love and determination that save the day, not her 'bringing balance to the Force'.

Yes, Ben will have to face consequences for his actions, even with the caveat of having his memory twisted. But Rey, and his parents, and Chewey are all with him.

Just... Rey remembering everything kind about him when they were kids, every time he apologized for the dark moods that sometime took him, how loving and careful he always was with her, and believing to the depths of her heart that that man was still in there somewhere, and that man could be restored... and Ben choosing to accept her forgiveness, to trust her when she says she'll go with him to find the truth, finding the strength to fight down the warped memories and the idea that he should kill her, and letting her lead him back into the light! Arghhh, yes.

Yeah, there is an age gap, but as they would be both adults by this time, I could 100% ship it, and am doing so right now. (Aka imagining them kissing in the last scene of the last movie...)

Not to worry, though. We have plenty of coffee and glitterworld medicine stocked up, and enough resources for bionics should the need arise. Not to mention the ability to turn someone into a sanguophage, and—now that the Ancient Danger is cleared—available cryptosleep caskets if all else fails!

... It might take Ivy a little while to be willing to participate in any more adventures, though. That's okay. She's earned a break.

Cricket is paranoid and scared. Constantly. Perpetually. Not to say she’s easily startled and not to say she’s got a lot to be afraid of of but that she’s authentically scared all the time. To her, reality is not permanent and is instead fully liable to fall apart at any given moment. The ground can cave in at any time and the sky is falling down to crush her. All the time. She's paranoid to the point of not trusting the world to continue existing. It isn’t something she can fix- there is something deeply wrong with there and there’s nothing she can do about it.

Kasuars react to fear with engagement and therefore violence. engaging via violence is control in a helplessly uncontrollable universe. It’s the only way they can exercise power between being the at the bottom ranks of the Eusan hierarchy and fodder in war. This is why Cricket is one of the most deadly kasuars one can ever find. She’s constantly trying to attain control- something she’s never felt nor understood. She’s strong, she’s fast, and she won’t blink while she tears her enemies limb from limb barehanded. She doesn’t die since she’s already in a constant state of clinging to reality and life. What’s the difference between convincing yourself the ground you’re standing on will keep holding you up and opening your ribcage just to remove shrapnel? The same way one in constant pain won’t notice another wound- Cricket can’t tell the difference between active life-and-death situations and just trying to stay even slightly stable while standing still. She’s in a constant state of adrenaline and fight-flight-freeze, only she's to never freeze nor fly. She's every single thing kasuars hate about themselves packed into weak mass-produced flesh protected only by a recycled shell: Scared, paranoid, insecure, angry, and helpless.

This leaves her in an even worse predicament. She’s commended for surviving against all odds and being a demonic killing machine that can destroy entire squads of soldiers on its own. Can’t slow it, can’t kill it, can’t stop it. Cricket is everything anyone wants from a soldier. Even if she could be helped, she wouldn’t be.

By some sort of miracle she has Jensen.- Someone who actually manages to help. Even if just for a moment, Cricket gets held and can breathe easier. Jensen holds her hand and tells her she's safe, but she can’t ever get Cricket to be fully comfortable. How do you make someone feel safe when they’ve never trusted the very earth to stay stable a day in her life?

Current theory is a connective tissue/muscle disease, but it’s very possible it could be some kinda late diagnosed genetic disorder. I’ll keep the updates but hoping to get a diagnosis in a reasonable amount of time 💜

Just found and read your chatot rant and I'm curious. How would you rewrite him to be a more understandable/likable character?

I wouldn’t change a whole lot about him. Personality wise I think he’s funny/well-rounded. It’s more of how many times they made him do needlessly cruel stuff to h/p that’s never addressed again.

I say, let Apple woods stay the same. Like I said before in my rant, I enjoyed the conflict there. My problem only stems from the fact that??? He doesn’t have any real reason to distrust them???

Give him a reason. Show that h/p were fucking up a lot of jobs when they first joined the guild- and chatot (begrudgingly) took their excuses because they’re new. And he gives them a lot of chances despite his callous demeanor.

THEN, let the incident in Apple woods be the moment where he finally decides those two had enough second chances. And doesn’t hear them out. And other than that I’m alright w/ chapter 6.

NOW… CHAPTER 17…

Ughhhhh man. I already made my grievances known with this chapter but I genuinely hated how they handled chatot here. Will start off by saying (again), I LIKE that he’s distrustful about majority of what partner said. The future, Grovyle being good, The “magical hidden land”, etc. IT MAKES SENSE LMAO. ITS SO OUT THERE.

What pissed me off was how he immediately tried to play off that he trusted them the whoooole time. And it’s called out as a JOKE. And never addressed again. I’d do either 2 things here.

1. Let Chatot actually test the guild’s trust in h/p.

Do you know how awesome it would’ve been to have him IMPROVE from Apple woods? Have the entire guild that once had your back— now distrusting our main duo? And have CHATOT be the one to actually stand up for them there???? And HE be the one to point out Dusknoir grabbed those two in broad daylight? (Further emphasizing him as Wigglytuff’s right hand man(bird) and how much more competent he is than his pink leader? LIKE MAN THAT WOULDVE INSTANTLY REKINDLED MY LOVE FOR HIM. But what we got in main game was so much more disappointing.

2. Chatot doubling down on what he said.

Okay this MAY sound weird but hear me out. Having chatot still be distrustful until Brine cave would’ve, in my opinion, also been EONS better than him going “oh lol I trust them hehehe!!!!! I’m so silly!!!!” <<(accused two Pokémon they lied about the traumatic ass experience they went through.)

Have him still not trust a word they said. And that in turn comes with some actual consequence. (Like Wigglytuff being upset/disappointed in him and it driving a wedge between the two until Brine cave) Have him suffer some kind of consequence. Not some off screen rant he had w/ Team skull. Not some random sacrifice that’s disconnected with the stuff he done. A consequence that actually makes him realize “wait am i being an ass” before he continues to double down.

(I’m a sucker for characters doing bad things as long as they get consequences or try to make up for it.) (doesn’t have to be both at the same time.)

AAAND THATS PRETTYYY MUCH IT! I love Post-Game chatot a whole bunch and If I’m being honest???? I still like Chatot when he’s not being a colossal jackass.

I love that he’s stressed and snippy. I love that he’s trying his damn hardest to keep the guild running. I love that when h/p fail the graduation fight— he’s the one smiling towards them like a little shit. I love that he regards h/p in a positive light and acknowledges the good they did for the guild in the rare few moments he’s being honest with them.

It’s why I liked him at the start and near the end. The middle was just waaay too rocky for me. But on my replay of the game I’ll try to keep an open mind for the bird. I wanna give him a chance.
