"No? I think it's pretty fascinating and also thinking about the ways we can ethically use cuts of woods without, I don't know, chopping down a whole forest, you know? I've had designs for all the other Olympian gods since forever, but I always get distracted or frustrated and can never finish drawing all of them as a group. Today I decided to just sketch em out and not focus too hard on the details, and I finally did all of them in one go! Except for Apollo but like, I'm sure y'all know what my Apollo desgin looks like at this point lol.

Athena didn't exactly think of herself as a cinephile but she was an avid renter and often felt like she was making up for all of the movies she didn't see when she was younger. Sure she had taken her siblings to see films but she had always been more concerned about them than what was on the screen. "So let's go with 3 or 4 recs? We'll give full reviews," she teased. "Which reminds me, you should come over one of these nights or over the weekends, what are your days off? I'd love to cook for you."

Vivian smiled as Athena spoke about her wife. She wondered what it was like to happy like that. Alas, that wasn't something she could have. Any partner she had would be just as messed up as her, and they'd probably just be miserable together. "How about a romcom that will make you cry at the end?" She suggested. "Roman Holiday. It's about a princess who falls in love with an American journalist." She explained. "Or do you want a run of the mill romcom and a romantic drama that will make you cry?"

"I think you should do something fun either way. You only have your summer anyway, you gotta find space to enjoy it. Did you think about planning a vacation?" Athena was excited for him, appreciative of their friendship. She always had great appreciation for teachers, especially ones that worked with the youngest students, it took a certain kind of patience. The fact that Roman reminded her of her youngest brother who she had practically raised also may have been a part of it but she wasn't ready to admit that to anyone, let alone herself.

"Summers are meant to be enjoyed. Speaking of, keep some of your weekends clear because we are definitely doing barbecues. I am actually quite good on the grill."

Upon the prompt to do so, Athena ordered her white wine. And then she propped herself up on her elbow. Their friendship group generally had a 'no talking about work' rule which she didn't disagree with, but it did also mean that in cases like this, it felt like you didn't know anything about a large part of your friends life. She took her drink with a small smile, clinked their glasses together and then took a sip. "I work for a hardship charity," Athena explained. "I am one of their frontline workers. So when people are struggling and reach out to the charity for support, I go and meet them in person and work with them to help them," The woman explained calmly. Another sip of her drink and then she raised her eyebrows. "So tell me more about what it is you do exactly. I don't think we've ever had a chance to speak about it much fully because the general group vibe is, let's not talk about work."

They were amicable enough—acquaintances who occasionally met on weekends but hadn’t ventured far beyond casual conversation yet. Somehow, tonight felt different though: an energy hung in the air that made Hugo hesitate before heading home. “That’s what I was hoping to hear. What’s your poison?” He liked this relaxed moment where they could strip away pretense; being amongst friends had its charm but sharing quieter moments allowed for possibilities untapped so far between them. “True, it’s been a while although I don’t really go out much when I’m not working. Got enough music and all that all day so in my spare time I usually just opt for a quiet night at home. What about yourself? What have you been up to?” Hugo asked curiously, before he ordered the drinks and handed Athena her glass. “Here you go! Now, drink up, buttercup!”

I think the part of Twisted Threads that fucks me up the most is that the Olympians just... didn't have anything on Arachne. The "sexual indiscretions" she talks about Zeus committing are completely true- Heracles confirms so in Favored Son- in fact, Zeus' sexual behaviors seem to be well established public knowledge.

Athena is spoken of as a master of communications, she was, after all, the one who mentored Arachne and is an Olympian herself. And she does deceive, regardless of what she told Arachne, Athena does flat out lie using Arachne's voice at the end ("the recent accusations against Zeus have proven to be fraudulent"). But even Athena found Arachne's record to be so flawless that the only option the Olympians had was to kill her. Arachne had neither done nor committed anything that could be spun to be as remotely vile as Zeus.

There is the argument that Arachne's trusted (again, trusted, where the Olympians are largely not) voice and powerful brain made Athena believe that it was simply a better use of resources to kill and then puppet her. But I would argue that public humiliation and disapproval has repeatedly been shown as the preferred method of the Olympians to bend people to their will (Heracles and Oedipus) and the most effective way of making someone irrelevant regardless of their prior standing (Ariadne). Well, the song said it itself "Nothing goes to waste in the City," the Olympians would not have discarded Arachne if they had a way to regain control over her.

There was no way to "smear" her in return, for all her flaws exist only in her ambition, and that ambition was only a flaw to the Olympians, not the population of the City at large.

Weaving progress for Athena's shrine cloth! It's definitely not perfect but I'm enjoying it. All of the weft yarn so far is either undyed (white) or dyed by me. iirc the light tannish yarn was dyed with tea bags and the dark yellow was dried spearmint. I've got some light blue yarn from Aunt Jenny Makes that I felt like I should add prepped and ready to go for the next time I work on it
