“I headcanon that Charles has auditory hypersensitivity! His headphones are soundproof, protecting him from any loud or repetitive noises. During Valiant Hero, he's following a group of toppats without his helicopter, and yet, he was wearing the headphones. Of course, it could be for communication, but even inside the bar, he is using them. Usually, using headphones for too long can be tiring, and people might need a break from them, but people with hypersensitivity might feel the need to always use them.”

Entry #007
Sensory System
In autism the sensory system is a funny part of the body, it can be hypersensitive or hyposensitive. It can be a kind of a superpower and a disability at the same time. When people think about the senses, they often think about the five senses that do the seeing (visual), hearing (auditory), smelling (olfactory), tasting (gustatory), and feeling (tactile), but there are three more systems in the body that take in information for the brain to process and acts on it. It are the balancing and coordination (vestibular), the positioning (proprioception), and the information from inside the body (interoception).
I won't be explaining the visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory and tactile senses separately. I think they are pretty self-explanatory, in contrary to the vestibular, proprioception and interoception senses. Generally there are three categories in how people can perceive the information through their senses, they can be normosensitive, hypersensitive and / or hyposensitive. It is not one fits all, you can be hyposensitive and be stimulating it yourself, but then suddenly get overstimulated after all. It is a journey to find out how you react and how to balance your systems. But know that all the systems work together, for example your visual system works together with your auditory and vestibular system. I have drawn out the links I have found up until now how my systems work together, so that if one system gets overstimulated it could have some effect on another system for me.
Vestibular
The vestibular sense is the sense of stability, balance, movements and position of the head on the body. It works together with the visual system to make sure your eyes look in the right direction while moving your head and to correlate movements registered with what's being seen.
Proprioception
Proprioception is the possibility to perceive the position of your extremities. It gets registered by the mechanoreceptors in the tendons of your muscles and together with the visual and vestibular system it makes sure someone can coordinate movements with correct force. It is partly conscious and partly unconscious regulated, and is responsible for body position, reflexes, movement coordination, correct tone of muscles and stability. People with autism can often have trouble with correctly positioning their body, stability and coordination of movements. This is partly because of the two other senses as well, but also because of a hyposensitivity to the mechanoreceptors in the tendons.
Interoception
Interoception includes the thermoception (possibility to perceive temperature and regulates body temperature) and the nociception (possibility to perceive pain), as well as all the other bodily sensations like hunger, thirst, pain, toilet urge, flatulence, intra-abdominal gas, nausea, etc. Notice that pain is listed twice, as 'nociception' and as 'other bodily sensation'. This is because nociception is a complex thing. Nociception is pain through a stimulus within a tissue by either thermal, chemical or mechanical. But pain can also derive from other sources, for example pain from nerves is called neuropathic pain. It's a separate study on its own, but the distinction could be relevant, because for example, I'm hyposensitive to nociception and hypersensitive to neuropathic pain stimuli. Meaning, I won't feel I'm overstretching my muscles and creating an inflammation around or even doing a little damage to a nerve. Ending up with a neurogenic inflammation pain and sensory loss across an entire nerve branch for weeks, which is excruciating for me. But hey, I was able to bend my arm backwards and get that paper from behind the cupboard without moving it.
Integration
It's useful to make an inventory in what categories one is hypo- or hypersensitive for certain stimuli and what practical problems it creates for you. Beneath this sensory system inventory worksheet I have included mine too, so you have an example as well.
Mine looks something like this:
It's probably not finished yet, but I thought I might already share it. How I think my sensory system works together or influences each other for me, that I found out up until now (the faint and bolder green lines are both interactions):

Hiiii.
Hope I’m not being a bother.
do you want to drop your favorite headcanons?
youre not at all countdown we’re friends :3
do u mean dc hcs bc if yes i’ll edit this post with them lol
the edit:
Steph has fibromyalgia or some unspecified chronic pain. before or after her death* girl is going through it with those flare-ups
*another one of mine: Steph did die via power drill torture (and torture in general), except bc of her silly little "fuck you DC you cant kill me" powers and general fuckery, Leslie still managed to get to her and restart her heart (also Leslie didnt kill her on purpose to me. idc that it was the canon retcon i hate that so much.)
Steph is autistic too (entirety of the batfam is on the spectrum dont care didnt ask) but she also probably has some personality disorder mostly because i also hc Arthur as just one of the worst fathers one could be (for the angst potential). i have a main DC AU that covers that bc its steph-focused
Cass is actually hypersensitive to some textures and sounds (where Steph is hyposensitive) but having an outward reaction got beaten out of her so
Additionally Cass definitely has issues with auditory processing and not just because of not knowing language
Umm gonna throw a curveball here. Damian loves musicals. he knows all of them also. in his head hes constantly screaming some lyric from fucking. Heathers or something

Hiii!!!! Would you be able to do some more headcanons about Wayne being autistic?? Specifically about sensory issues or literally anything else like that, my Wayne hyperfixation is eating me alive and finding someone (you) who also agrees that he’s autistic makes me want to explode with happiness!
helloo!!! um yes ALWAYS I love talking about autistic Wayne McCullough I love these request tytyty
ok so foreword: personally i do not have any major sensory issues that impact my life from day to day, i am awaree and relatively informed of the subject enough to have some headcanons and fact check them the best i can via the search engines but if any of this is like heinously implausible i apologise profusely and owe you like a sandwich or something
Wayne McCullough sensory issues headcanons herer we go
ok so
I think overall he's more hyposensitive than hypersensitive
specifically i think he's hyposensitive to olfactory, auditory and vestibular stimuli and a mix of hypo/hypersensitive to tactile stimuli and i will elaborate now
olfactory hyposensitivity is an under-responsiveness to smell so basically he does not experience that kind of stimuli in the same way or level as most do
it's why he smells things as like a way to interact with them its a sensory seeking thing
it also means he can't pick up on smells that are obvious for other people which normally isn't too inconvenient he does his hygiene things on a schedule anyway bc it's easier to remember
but it can get kind of annoying for del sometimes because he'll burn shit in the kitchen (once in a blue moon he's otherwise a very good cook) and he doesn't even KNOW that shit lingers
"...did you burn popcorn in the microwave again?"
"uh, yeah, how'd you know?"
auditory hyposensitivity basically the same thing but with sound
he's gotten into scuffles with neighbours for blasting music unreasonably loud at unreasonably early because he likes loud music but doesn't like the way headphones feel in or on his ears
yk those channels on your tv that are static and go HCGGCHSGJJKSKJAGFGJCBSK whenever you turn them on
as a little little kid like as a baby his parents would have him watch those to soothe him
and hey they TRIED with regular baby sensory programmes they had cable but he would cry and he would scream until they put his static back on and until they put it on (relatively) LOUD
it was more of a thing when he was little but he still doesn't respond to his name sometimes, particularly in a crowded environment to a voice he doesn't recognize
vestibular hyposensitivity basically the vestibular system has to do with balancing, movement, spatial awareness that kinda thing
clumsy as shit as a kid, has barely since recovered
several times he's started fights out by swinging and missing at a person and the initial embarrassment of the fuck up kind of works as good luck because it fuels him to win
and he does, every time,,
walks into walls
walks into tables, chairs
walks into people
you get it
when he was like 6 and being a little much and his dad needed a break he'd get him to see how many times he could spin around without getting dizzy
kept him entertained for a good half hour until he got distracted
and then tactile/touch stimuli is the only one he has trouble with really
this kinda goes for taste as well most of his hypersensitivities are with foods, but more often than not it's an issue he has with the texture
I touched on what i think some of his safe foods would be in my other autistic wayne hcs post but as for his foods that he absolutely cannot stand im gonna say
anything slimy or runny, any mushy fruit or vegetables, seafood, and apples (too cold and wet and weird against his teeth)
His main tactile trigger is around physical contact with other people but he is known to experience visceral repugnance towards an inanimate texture every once and a while
his dad tried sending him to a boy scouts thing when he was like 7
then on the first day he went into the backyard trying to find his son so he could actually get him to the darn place and had found little Wayne shirtless, lighter in hand, trying to burn his uniform because he didn't like the way it scratched
anyways physical contact is a weird one for him he's very conditional about it
like 90% of the time he hates it so much it's always such a shock to his system it feels BAD
but also it's like one of his top love languages
basically he hates unexpected touch 100% of the time, he hates touch from people he doesn't trust, and certain places on his body unless it's in a very specific context he will hate to be touched in
he prefers hard touch to light touch, but if it's in a favourable context and he's in an alright mood, he doesn't mind it so much either way
weirdly he never really had to talk to Del about that because whenever she holds his hand or grabs his arm to get his attention or anything like since they've known eachother she just GRABS
little weirdo
he could not breathe right with her on that bike
but anyways in the right context with the right person he finds touch to be sooooo comforting he craves it a lil
also introception/proprioception hyposensitivity issues
he does not feel or react to pain maybe as much as he should (canon)
he also doesn't really feel any physical indication of hunger, thirst, or heat until insane extents
he is dehydrated!!!
alright thats all ive got for now i hope that came out right and i hope you are having a scrumptious day tysm for the ask this was so funn
ps. sorry it took so long and is so long here's a sandwich
pps. i found out i have vestibular, tactile and auditory hyposensitivity during the making of this post

Humans Are Weird: Auditory Processing Disorder
Report # 306
Topic: Auditory Processing Disorder
APD: disorder of the auditory (hearing) system that causes a disruption in the way that an individual's brain understands what they are hearing.
Four days ago I was doing my monthly meeting with the electrical department, receiving updates on our monthly usage, needed parts, and checking up on general morale. (The transcript of that meeting is already turned in.) After the meeting we had refreshments and I discovered Lucy (previously mentioned in report #286) pouting in a corner. I inquired what was bothering her. She said, "The ship's head medic just diagnosed me with APD but he wasn't trained to treat it." I asked for further information on the condition. She listed several of her personal symptoms. "It means I don't always catch what people say. It feels like my brain doesn't want to listen. In one ear and out the other making me look stupid to however I talk to. It's connected to my misophonia, and the fact I was born really premature."
I was unsure how to comfort her so I made no effort. This seemed to work for Lucy kept speaking.
"And what's worse is there's nothing I can do! We don't have a speech therapist aboard or even any research materials! Its starting to affect my work performance. On top of decoding, hypersensitivity, and prosodic problems, I have integration issues which mean its really hard for me to focus on what people are saying when I'm doing something. Which freaking sucks when you're part of a team!" I had no clue what she was really talking about but gave her a hug (human gesture of enveloping one in your arms as a sign of comfort or safety), and she apologized for "venting" to me.
She then spoke on how her crew mates just thought she was "slow" or wasn't good at her job. They questioned if she was capable because she would follow directions incorrectly and she was worried she'd be replaced with someone "less problematic". I tried to assure her that I would help anyway I could on her behalf. Never again will I doubt a human's sincerity.
After some of my own personal research I have made a list of the different types and their definitions for your education on the subject:
Hypersensitivity – Hypersensitivity to sound is often diagnosed as misophonia or hyperacusis. Misophonia is when people have adverse physical reactions to sounds, such as becoming nauseated by the sound of chewing or slurping. Hyperacusis, on the other hand, is characterized by a sensitivity to sounds. For some, this means that white noise can be deafening, even causing physical pain.
Decoding – Decoding difficulties involve a lack of figuring out words that are spoken. They hear the sounds, but their brains do not process them as words.
Integration – Integration applies to those who struggle to do multiple things while listening. Such multi-tasking may be writing notes and listening, or having conversations while typing an email.
Prosodic – Prosodic refers to people who have trouble with tone, inflection, and implied meaning. A question and exclamation are processed identically in their brains. Their speech is also often monotone.
Organizational – Finally, organizational, or output, is often characterized by not recalling information in a specific order or having difficulty with noisy situations.
Honestly, Humans are so diverse and unpredictable. To think that different "problems" or " abnormalities " within their mind or body can lead to even more similar issues astounds me. They are so intricate in a way my species has never been. Despite the struggles that their disorders, and conditions being, I think it's strangely beautiful. Maybe that's just me, but I have a new appreciation for them.
I am requesting the presence of a speech therapist, whether physically or digitally, to be readily available to our crew. We must also add APD onto our medics research requirements. It is not an overly complicated subject to be fluent in. I also request that Lucy's diagnoses be added to her list of wrongful termination along with her gender, age, and race. No one should feel their position is at risk because of a disorder or disability. I also request that a written copy of daily instruction be printed for her if necessary. She is one of our best electricians and I mean to keep her employed here as long as she wants.

I feel like I've learned some new things about sensory processing disorder and how it manifests in me specifically recently. I don't see many people talk about the auditory aspect of SPD very often, but I think in my adult life it's the part that affects me the most. I'm very sensitive to sound and I had an experience this weekend that really made me think about it.
One of the smoke detectors in my house needed its batteries replaced, which wasn't something I'd ever done before. While I was figuring out how to dismount it from the ceiling to access the battery compartment, I accidentally triggered the TEST button and it started going off. Only for three extended beeps, but it was piercingly, painfully loud (as smoke detectors tend to be), and I was right next to it. It triggered me severely. It caused me a significant amount of pain and internal panic, and my body was stuck in fight-or-flight for quite a while afterwards.
This has happened many times in my life, being triggered by unexpected loud sounds. I feel like every other aspect of SPD has evened out to some degree from childhood to adulthood for me, but the auditory side is still horrifically sensitive (though to be fair, as a kid I was terrified of flushing toilets because they hurt my ears. I've thankfully grown past that now).
Even beyond the pain and panic of triggers, I feel like the most frustrating part of auditory SPD is that people who aren't hypersensitive often don't take it seriously. They can't fathom everyday sounds causing pain for me. And it's such a unique and specific kind of pain that it's really hard to describe, which furthers people's assumptions that I'm making it up. The best way I can describe it is that it's a pain that takes out all of my other senses and my ability to think immediately. My vision goes blurry and I literally cannot form a coherent thought besides "GET AWAY" to save my life.

hii! I would like to ask some headcanons for yuto, ryoga and bae on how they would react to a f!mc who has tactile and auditory hypersensitivity? unfortunately she can't go to a paralive concert in person so she settles for watching them by video :'')...my most personal request xd thank youu and take care *hug*
Allen Sugasano:
Allen tried not to over exaggerate when it came to your condition but he truly couldn’t imagine not being able to be surrounded by music in the way that only concerts could provide. He doesn’t know if it would have the same effect for him personally to only watch videos of performances but for you, it seemed to be a way to support him that was also considerate of your condition. He made sure to send you the highest quality videos, even sending you the lyrics in case you had to turn down the volume from the videos as well so you could still hear what BAE was singing about.
Anne Faulkner:
Anne can always picture you in the crowd supporting them, telling you not to worry about being able to attend personally. They would always pick what was best for you over anything, and the fact you had an alternative way to support them made them feeling extra appreciated. They couldn’t voice this enough, head on your shoulder as you watched their performance and bopped your head along with the beat. They thought you were too cute with how enamored you’d get while watching them perform.
Hajun Yeon:
It does mean a great deal to Hajun that you seek out BAE’s performances despite being unable to attend their concerts, though he’ll never show how deep that appreciation runs. He’ll try to subtly watch your reactions to their performances without making it clear he’s trying to see your feelings on them, mostly pleased by how you seemed to enjoy the concert like you were there despite having to watch after the fact.
Ryoga Tosa:
Ryoga does not want you to push your limits for him. He even felt a little guilty even if it was your decision to come see him live, but there’s relief when you find a way to support him without hurting yourself. He doesn’t think it makes it any less important to watch him through a video verse in person, especially considering most of your interactions have to be from afar for now. The times you do get to be together in person are better spent alone, where you can have all his attention and a moment of peace rather than a roaring crowd standing between you.
Yuto Inukai:
Yuto would be fine with you not watching him on stage at all, as he never knows what impression he might give off to you when he's not fully 'himself'. He would even watch the videos of his performances with you, sweating a bit as he wondered what switch flipped whenever he stepped on stage with the others. Seeing you look so happy was enough to wipe away his confusing thoughts, the smile on your face enough to motivate him for the next hundred years.

Snippet below the cut!!!⬇️⬇️⬇️
The next time one of the youngest bunny siblings traipsed into Donnie’s lab, it was not at all within the parameters of any scenario that he had anticipated.
Mari came slinking in so quietly, even his sensitive hearing aids almost failed to pick up the sound. Her padded steps were so soft and careful, it was as if she didn’t even want to hear her own footfalls. He could even go so far as to say that she was as silent as any ninja, although Donnie knew the Miyamoto clan had no training in that style.
When his sensors did pick up on her presence, she was almost already right behind him.
He swiveled in his chair abruptly. She froze mid-stride. Her ears were trembling and her eyes were rimmed with red.
He knew practically nothing about the younger bunny twin, due to the fact that he hardly interacted with her. With minimal data, all he could tell for sure was that she was extraordinarily introverted, and for some reason enjoyed Raph’s tea parties. Why she would be coming to him unannounced, he had no idea.
“What’s the matter with you?” Donnie asked.
“You’re not sick,” said Donnie.
He tugged his goggles down over his eyes and activated a quick scan. It revealed an elevated heart rate, minor congestion in her sinuses, and some light inflammation in her corneas. Nothing that indicated illness.
Apparently, that was the wrong thing to say. Her eyes welled, and she swiped them with the heel of her hand. “Yes I am. I need something…to fix me.”
“Fix what?”
“You make potions like mystics, right? Ishi-nii-san said so. And you made him better.”
Donnie resisted the urge to criticize her comparison of his science to the backward mysticism her culture subscribed to. “Your brother has quantifiable symptoms that can be tempered with the right admixture of medications. But I can’t create medicine for vague or nonexistent problems, so if you want something, explain it properly.”
She hesitated, and for a moment looked as if she might just turn and leave. Instead she said, slowly, “Riko was humming again. And when I told her to stop she got mad and called me stupid again.”
Donnie cocked an eyebrow. “It’s not stupid to ask someone else to allay their noise pollution.”
“But only simple people have to have quiet to concentrate. I’m not supposed to get so annoyed when Riko sings or makes noise.” Mari twisted the lacing on her tunic between her fingers. “Usually I don’t mind too much, but…today I was mean and I asked her to be quiet anyway.”
Donnie cocked an eyebrow. “Why is that mean?”
“Because she wasn’t even very loud like she is sometimes. But it still made my ears hurt and my head fuzzy and my tummy all shaky.”
“Oh. That.” Donnie swiveled the goggles back up to the top of his head.
“Can you make it better?”
“Of course not.”
He spoke little too quickly and bluntly, based on the absolutely crestfallen look that overtook her.
Donnie added, “But only because there’s nothing to fix. Aversion to auditory stimulation isn’t an illness that you take medicine for.”
He knew what it was like to feel overstimulated. And he’d read enough medical journals to understand sensory issues and how to handle them. It didn’t mean that Mari was deficient, just that she was more sensitive than most. She needed quiet and privacy more than noise and social interaction.
He watched as her eyes began to fill again. Oh, Hawking. Of course no one had ever explained this to her. From what he heard, the clan’s so-called ‘healers’ hadn’t even bothered to treat Usagi’s wounds when he was a child for fear it would hinder the mystic tattoos. With that level of incompetence, Donnie was surprised him and his siblings had survived for as long as they did.
“Auditory hypersensitivity isn’t uncommon,” said Donnie. “Adaptability is optimal in someone your age, and it’s just a matter of mitigating the stimulation to a tolerable level and practicing coping strategies for moments when extenuation is impossible.”
Mari blinked.
Donnie sighed. “Your body doesn’t like loud noises. That’s okay. You’re not sick, and you’re not stupid.”
“But Riko likes loud noises. And being busy. And being around lots of other people all the time…”
“So?” said Donnie. “Twins can be different.”
Her face fell, and he wondered what the problem was. He and Leo had never really been alike. He'd thought that sort of thing when it came to siblings and twins was obvious.
“Here.” Donnie tugged the headset loose from around his ears and plopped them onto her head. One quick twist adjusted the headband and tucked the speakers in close to her ears.
In true Donnie fashion, he hadn’t been able to resist enhancing his hearings aids to adjust volume and filter background noises. He spun the dial to what was essentially a ‘sound-canceling’ setting, and the fins retracted. (Strange to have that option for someone who was nearly deaf, but versatility was inestimable.)
Mari’s eyes widened.
“Quieter, right?” asked Donnie.
She nodded.
Donnie tapped a button that would emit a low wash of white noise. He watched with satisfaction as Mari’s shoulders relaxed and the faintest of smiles threatened to break through.
“Better?” Donnie couldn’t hear his own voice, much less her answer, but he could easily surmise what her vigorous nod meant.
“Stay here where I can see you.” He pointed to a nearby stool. “And if you break those I will make myself new ones out of your ears.”
She smiled and nodded again. Probably couldn’t hear a word he was saying. Perfect.
He turned back to his desk and flipped to a blank page in his sketchbook to begin the basic design. It wasn’t a staggering challenge, but recreating his tech to fit a rabbit yokai and grow with her would provide an interesting afternoon project. It should occupy him for a few hours, at least, and the way Mari immediately hopped onto the nearest swiveling stool and snagged a book on the evolutionary processes of insects told him she could entertain herself quietly for however long it took.
He would make hers smaller and lighter, of course. Fitted so they wouldn’t even be noticeable once they were in place, hidden under the tufts of fur around her ears.
He didn’t bother to ask what color she wanted.
How fortuitous that she already wore purple.
