hi! i love all the research you put into your posts. im looking for inspiration for some nomadic earth kingdom ocs. i want them to be inspired by the hakka chinese ethnic group, which is the background of one of my friends. but from what i understand, the hakka were pretty nomadic themselves and dont have as much recorded/photographed history as other ethnic groups from china. is there any way you could find some outfits or info on customs for us? thanks in advance!

Sure, I can do that. As far as Chinese subgroups go, I actually think they're one of the more well-documented ones because they've settled in so many different parts of the world.

Architecture

The most well-known aspect of Hakka culture is their architecture. Because they were displaced from their ancestral lands, they have historically been viewed as "outsiders" by their neighbors; the Chinese characters for Hakka (客家) literally mean "guest family". As a result, their architecture emphasizes protection and communal living.

These structures are known as tulou (土楼) or walled villages. The villages are organized around central courtyards meant for gatherings and events. Surrounding the courtyards are living spaces, ancestral halls, and shared facilities like wells & kitchens. They typically house around 800-1000 people.

Unsurprisingly, this style of architecture was employed by the Air Nomads, who were all about communal living and protecting themselves from the outside world.

Clothing

Historically, Hakka were known to often wear blue and black. Because their communities typically engaged in strenuous agriculture, darker colors were preferred as they were more stain resistant. Blue, specifically, was chosen because they often settled down in areas where indigo was readily available. The color blue is so closely intertwined with their culture that their traditional dress is often known as the "Hakka Blue Shirt", in reference to the long robes they wore.

The veiled hats that the women wear are called liangmao (涼帽), meaning "cooling hats". As the name implies, they provide shade to keep the head cool and the veils help to shield the face from insects.

Food

Both their history of migration and the demands of agricultural labor have shaped their cuisine. Hakka cuisine typically focuses on hearty, oily, and pickled ingredients.

The picture above showcases their most famous dishes. You can easily Google how to prepare them. I've had the Cambodian version of the stuffed bitter gourd and it's pretty good.

They're also famous for their fluffy rice muffins called bo ban (发粄) in Hakka. You can find Southeast Asian versions of these muffins at your local Vietnamese grocery store, where they're called bánh bò hấp or just bánh bò. They have a great texture and I snacked on them all the time as a kid.

Miscellaneous Fact

Because both Hakka men and women were expected to participate in agriculture, Hakka women never had to bind their feet.
