Scripted a 3 year slow burn in my Sleep Token Dr because I want those guys to Yearn for me. But that also means I will be Yearing for them too for 3 years.
We've all been in love with each other since just a few months into being a band but we're just. Too dumb to say anything. Each of us really will be thinking no one else is feeling the same.
Those cuddle piles are totally platonic and no one is having a crisis the entire time. Totally.

"DESPERATE EASY SLUT POOL" INCREASES MASSIVELY AS WOMEN'S LIBERATION AND EARNINGS EQUALITY MEANS THERE ARE FAR FEWER MEN FOR THEM TO MARRY UP
FROM G. ST GERMAINE, EQUALITY REPORTER IT APPEARS WOMEN just cannot win. Having achieved liberation, equality and increasing pay parity, it turns out it’s still a man’s world when it comes to mating. “Women have always tended to mate and marry up,” says relationship psychologist Dr Darina Enright-Bog, of the world-renowned Clitoris Institute in Vienna. “Unfortunately, as Western women increase…

Drawn after the Quick
(ie Drawn from Life)

Colored woodcut print by an unknown English artist, generally dated to 1540-1550, possibly depicting Irish kerns who fought for King Henry VIII at the siege of Boulogne in 1544.
All 6 of the men wear a léine (linen tunic) with an ionar (short jacket) over it, and the 4 on the left have a brat (wool mantle). The men have their léinte rucked up to knee length and secured at the waist with a belt or cord. The léinte have the wide hanging sleeves that are typical of 16th c. Gaelic fashion. They also have a deep center-front opening, a feature which matches Burgundian courtier Laurent Vital's description of clothing he saw during his 1518 visit to Kinsale, Co. Cork:
"Generally the men, women, and young girls wear their shirts open to the waist. Most young women and girls have their chests naked to the waist." (translation taken from a lecture by Katherine Bond)
The ionair in this print are very similar in cut to the ionar of the Kilcommon bog outfit. The hat worn by the man in the red ionar is also similar to the hat of the Kilcommon outfit.

The floral scroll design seen on some of the ionair was a popular embroidery motif in England during the 16th-early 17th centuries. It also shows up in 16th c. Irish art like St. Brigid's shoe shrine.
4 of the ionair and all of the visible scabbards have fringe on them. Fringe was a popular embellishment in 16th c. Ireland. The use of fringe is mentioned in several 16th and early 17th c. descriptions of Irish clothing. Fringes made of wool and fringes made of silk were imported into Ireland during the 16th c.
In spite the claim that it was drawn from life, this print includes some stylistic exaggeration. The sword blades are depicted as having a bulbous tip, which actual Irish ring-pommel swords are not. Compare the swords in the print to this extant 16th c. sword from Tully Lough, Co. Roscommon in the NMI:
The print is currently in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum. https://collections.ashmolean.org/object/737327

18th August 1773 saw Samuel Johnson and James Boswell set out on their three month tour of the Highlands and the Inner Hebrides.
Boswell enticed his famous English friend Samuel Johnson to accompany him on a tour through the highlands and western islands of Scotland.
James Boswell, 9th Laird of Auchinleck was a Scottish biographer, diarist, and lawyer, born in Edinburgh, like many young men he longed to visit the bright lights of London and in 1760 he deserted the family home to live in the English capital for a few months. It was during his second stay in 1762-63 that he met his literary hero and model, the poet, essayist and dictionary maker Dr. Samuel Johnson. In August 1763 Boswell embarked upon a 2½ year Grand Tour of Europe, during which he met many notable men and women, including Voltaire and Rousseau. On returning to Scotland he practised law as an advocate. During this time he made occasional visits London to spend time with Dr Johnson and others of his circle, including Oliver Goldsmith, Sir Joshua Reynolds and Edmund Burke. He was also on familiar terms with David Hume, Adam Smith and other leading figures of the Scottish Enlightenment.
Johnston and Boswell set off less than 30 years after the '45 Uprising, when whisky was still distilled illegally, roads were scarce and travel was by foot, bone-jangling carriage, horseback or over very turbulent seas in a rickety boat.
Their extraordinary journey to the Highlands and the Hebrides during an autumnal season of relentless rain and storms, took Johnson - plump, partially deaf and blind and who had rarely travelled outside of London - on a grand Scottish tour which led to two of the earliest travel books and paved the way for centuries of tourists who would also explore the nation’s wild islands and highland
While for the then 32-year-old Boswell there was a chance to witness Johnson up close for nearly three months, providing a wealth of material for his admired biography, Life of Samuel Johnson. The travel journal was a massive hit and a humorous account of their journey.
Boswell was Scots to his roots and is very defensive about the Scots and Scottishness, while Johnson has this very English take on it all. These two things fuel the humour, Johnson is like this English bulldog and Boswell is like a Scottish terrier. Together they are a hoot! Add to that the facts that as you would expect from a Scotsman, Boswell was a heavy drinker and Johnson was teetotal, which leads to all kinds of escapades. It’s like 18th century Laurel and Hardy.
Boswell, quoted their first conversation in the biography, Life of Samuel Johnson, saying: “Mr Johnson, I do indeed come from Scotland, but I cannot help it”. To which Johnson replied: “That, Sir, I find, is what a great many of your countrymen cannot help.”
It set the scene for a friendship driven by verbal sparring, with Johnson’s deprecating remarks about Scots robustly foiled by Boswell’s defence of homeland.
Their travels began in mid-August at Boyd’s Inn in Edinburgh, where the cleanliness dismayed Johnson. Boswell wrote: “He asked to have his lemonade made sweeter; upon which the waiter, with his greasy fingers, lifted a lump of sugar, and put it into it. The Doctor, in indignation, threw it out of the window”.
The pair then travelled up the east coast, stopping at St Andrews to indulge their interest in John Knox and Mary, Queen of Scots, Following the coast towards Aberdeenshire, a bit like today’s NC500 tourists plotting their route, they took an anti-clockwise course along the Moray Coast to Inverness and then to the Western Isles.
At times their journey resembled a lengthy pub crawl as they noted the quality of the inns and the food.
In Montrose, Johnson noted: “At our inn we did not find a reception such as we thought proportionate to the commercial importance of the place; but Mr Boswell desired me to observe the innkeeper was an Englishman, and I then defended him as well as I could.” Dundee, it was noted, was “dirty, despicable”. They even recorded their first taste of Arbroath smokies.
Having travelled through Glen Shiel, the pair arrived at the inn at Glenelg. Often praised today, Boswell and Johnson gave it the equivalent of a one-star TripAdvisor review. Having arrived “wearing and peevish”, they discovered “no meat, no milk, no bread, no eggs, no wine. We did not express much satisfaction.”
The Highland terrain posed even greater stress. Dangerous and often impassable except on foot, they were often in remote spots, miles from inns or shelter or ankle deep in a peat bog. Nevertheless, they trudged on through stormy weather and with Johnson often suffering from colds, increasing deafness and seasickness on the journeys between the islands.
The trip from Coll to Skye was undertaken during a vicious storm, with Boswell fretting over whether the boat might sink or explode, and troubled that he couldn’t understand the sailors’ Gaelic! Johnson was no great fan of the language, describing it as “the rude speech of a barbarous people, who had few thoughts to express, and were content, as they conceived grossly, to be grossly understood”.
But in Skye, they were delighted to meet Flora MacDonald, and slept in the same room that Bonnie Prince Charlie had slept in. “Both were over the moon because they were besotted with the story,” he wrote.
Don’t judge Johnson on his dislike of the Gaelic language though, the pair told of finding the Highlands still occupied by military garrisons, cleared by immigration and spoke of the suppression of Highland culture and oppression of the clans.
The isle of Raasay turned out to be a favourite spot, where the pair enjoyed the clan chief’s hospitality and a raucous ceilidh, with Boswell dancing a jig on the flat summit of Dun Caan. Both felt that in Raasay they had come close to authentic old Gaelic culture and way of life.
By October 1773 they were in the Saracen Head Inn in Glasgow’s Gallowgate, revelling in a roaring coal fire and conversation with professors from Glasgow University.
The trip would come to a sorry end, however, at Boswell’s family’s Ayrshire home at Johnson and Boswell’s father had an enormous row; they were total opposites in religious and political beliefs,
Johnson was a kind of father figure to Boswell. He knew Boswell could be a bit out of hand, but he also knew he was a real literary talent.”
Johnson’s A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland, was published in 1775, followed a exactly decade later by Boswell’s The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson. Both wrote their own versions of their tour differently. They go to the same places but see things differently.

NO TIME TO DIE - Review

FOR SPOILER EYES ONLY...
James Bond versus Covid. In more ways than one.
After Connery, Bond movies were often a step behind what’s popular, whether it’s MOONRAKER ripping off STAR WARS or LICENCE TO KILL taking a page out of MIAMI VICE's book. With NO TIME TO DIE, however, the creative team is ahead of the zeitgeist... by a lot... pitting Bond against a major public health crisis, but also ROBOTS. It's coronavirus with an algorithm, and it was all scripted and filmed before the pandemic was a twinkle in our eyes.
This movie’s not in the same league as SKYFALL and CASINO ROYALE, but for most of its runtime, it’s a fun throwback to earlier 007 entries. That is, until it gets bogged down under the weight of its own self-imposed melodrama. And even then, I like it. I think I like it a lot. I can't decide whether to give it a 3.5 or 4-star rating, but most of my gripes stem from problems that took root in SPECTRE.
Sure, the ending could’ve used more of the slightly off kilter energy from the movie's first act. And I wouldn’t have minded an extra smidge of Ana de Armas thrown in there. She's fun and looks good with a machine gun (and since her character doesn't appear elsewhere, I have a feeling she was added in as a result of reshoots). In Craig's scenes with Armas and elsewhere in the film's first half, 007 has a lighter touch than pretty much any other Bond film Craig's headlined. And as a fan of the Roger Moore era, without the stodgy, campy flare of Moore's later years, I think Craig wears this semi-winking approach to Bond fairly well.
One thing I'm not a fan of is "fan service," but here, the homages to past Bond entries feel special. I couldn't get enough of that Hall of M's (although I would've loved a little glimpse of Bernard Lee's portrait... unless I missed it). I loved the tribute to DR. NO and other Connery/Lazenby installments in the opening credits, even if Billie Eilish's title track is a bit too low key and downbeat for what should be more bombastic –– this theme feels like someone took a tape recording of Adele's SKYFALL theme, slowed it down, and then let it soak for too long in Sam Smith's jacuzzi-of-sadness.
You know what? F*ck it. I love the ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE references, even if Madeleine Swann never truly seems like the love or second love of Bond’s life – again, I blame SPECTRE for that. And I also don't mind the repeated quoting of "We have all the time in the world." Besides, hearing Louis Armstrong sing at the end credits really elevated this movie, giving it a heart that Eilish's theme, while st-eilish (see what I did there?), doesn't really offer.
Even the villain's plot feels like a nod to ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, with NO TIME TO DIE's killer DNA-killing virus serving as a 21st-century, government funded, gain-of-function version of Blofeld's give-a-bunch-of-pretty-women-the-world's-most-contagious-sickness-disguised-as-high-end-allergy-treatment from OHMSS.
Ultimately, I like Bond’s fate. I know it feels a little DARK KNIGHT RISES-y, but they did the best they could after the sharp turn the franchise took with SPECTRE. Beyond some awkward plotting ("allow me to introduce James Bond's stepbrother, BLOFELD!"), throughout much of the past five films – Craig's Bond was often either betrayed or driven to seek personal, hellbent revenge. Yes, it's interesting when Bond is pushed too far, but Craig's Bond has quit, retired or experienced a fakeout death multiple times throughout his five-movie run. Connery didn't really retire (at least not on screen), Roger Moore rarely lost his temper and Timothy Dalton only got his killing license revoked once. When big moments like that happen multiple times per movie, as with Craig's, they dull the impact of what are intended to be the franchise's bigger twists.
With that in mind, throughout NO TIME TO DIE, characters like Rami Malek's Safin (Satan? Saffron???) and Madeleine Swann keep playing up a huge, forthcoming reveal. While the ultimate twist is a big deal for Bond, it's dulled in its delivery. I think that's because we know, based on previous Craig movies, that his films try to be – well – non-traditional Bond films. Each of Craig's entries have pulled out the dramatic stops in such a way that nearly every one of his installments could be considered Bond's “last.” And that stunted the impact of what NO TIME TO DIE, the “final” Bond film, could have and should have left on the audience.
But it’s still powerful. And comfortable. I really enjoyed that opening car chase. Here, the cinematography is nearly every bit as confident as the camera work in SKYFALL without all that jumpy QUANTUM-OF-SOLACE editing. And seeing these characters interact with each other, including Craig's interplay with newcomer Lashana Lynch, was easy and breezy.
Maybe that's the biggest compliment I can throw at this movie. It's a shame we're getting no more Bond films from the Craig Crew –– James and Moneypenny and Q and Tanner and M –– they all seem so chummy and comfortable together. Almost like they're all working together on the Impossible Mission Force. Almost.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, I thought Christmas only came once a year. With Craig, even in his lesser entries, we've got five. Five times the Christmas.
And while, with NO TIME TO DIE, it feels like we've run out of time – at 2 hours and 45 minutes – we had all the time in the world.

hey Nina! i really like how you explain hozier's songs and i was wondering if you could talk about what Run is about? no matter how much i listen to that one i just can't seem to get it :(
I do not blame you for having a hard time understanding Run. I also had trouble, until I saw a piece of Tumblr analysis that changed everything:
Run is about the colonization of Ireland.
You can read the original post here. The evidence is very compelling.
Basically, Hozier said that song was inspired by a James Joyce quote about how “Ireland is the sow that eats its farrow” - as in, a mother pig who eats her babies. There’s the line in the song “oh but the farrow knows / her hungry eyes, her ancient soul”, which seems to echo that quote. Therefore, the woman in this song is clearly meant to represent Ireland.
Other evidence hints to the woman specifically representing the land of Ireland – the fact that Hozier’s called the song “a love song between the sea and the land”, and the line “how she twisted the bog-man / when she married him”. That’s a reference to how bog bodies look all twisted and shriveled when they’re unearthed, and how many of them were presumed to have been ritual sacrifices to some kind of goddess of the land.
Now, since the land represents Ireland, all the lines about the sea become more complicated. Though the sea has “as many souls claimed as she”, he’s portrayed as an aggressor with “white hands to fondle and beat her” and as “the cause of every tear she’d ever weep”. Obviously, the sea does beat upon the land and cause it to run with water, but when you imagine that a personification of Ireland is being abused, well…given Irish history, it seems like you could be talking about more than waves hitting the Irish coastline.
If you look at those lyrics again, they can very easily be read as descriptions of a colonial power. The legacy of colonialism is alive and well in every formerly colonized country, to the point where some scholars argue that colonialism isn’t actually over. After all, many countries are still economically tied to their former colonizer, and still being exploited. You could certainly make the case that colonialism is the cause of every tear those countries weep.
It’s also fairly accurate to describe a colonizer as having white hands – and before you go, “wait, the Irish are also white!”, yes, that’s true according to modern standards but a) it was, historically, not always the case, and b) even if it was, the British colonized the Irish and then went on to use their white hands to beat people who are not-white. So, y’know, still a relevant detail.
I also think “to fondle and beat her” is also an interesting commentary on the way that colonizers treat the women in the countries they colonize – a combination of fetishization (“fondle”) and abuse (“beat”). I don’t know about the resonance with Ireland, but in terms of colonialism in general? lt’s definitely a thing I learned about doing my Women’s Studies degree.
The chorus of the song is in first person, while the verses are this third person tale, which says to me that they aren’t about the same people. My reading is that the narrator of the song is thinking out loud about how this historical story impacts their relationship. Perhaps their love is rare and covered-up because it crosses this historical divide. Running to each other would make their lungs bleed because of the distance between them – metaphorically or physically.
TL;DR: Hozier made a song that uses layers of metaphors to say “Fuck the British”. Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone!

[[ Greater Moonsea Map by cuiilv. From the creator via Candlekeep:
Just want to share a map that I have been working on for a few years. It started out as a map of the Moonsea, the Ride and most of Vaasa in the early 1380s DR, but slowly grew to cover more and more land, until it included all of Damara, Impiltur, the Vast, the Dalelands, Sembia, Cormyr and large portions of Anauroch and the Great Glacier as well, before I finally forced myself to stop.
The map itself is very much inspired by Mike Schley's works, but I have tried to make it different enough to not be mistaken for the original.
All locations have been taken from official sourcebooks, magazines, articles, adventures, games, novels, short stories, and directly from designer (mostly Ed Greenwood and George Krashos here at Candlekeep). So everything should be canon (depending a bit on how inclusive your definition of canon is).
Note: This awesome map is HUGE and VERY DETAILED. It’s also thoroughly researched by the creator. I’m saving a copy of all the references they used, for the unlikely chance that this information will disappear from Candlekeep. ]]
cuiilv:
Here is a list of references for 1869 of the 1872 names that appear in the map. They are listed exactly as they appear on the map, so Kingdom of Impiltur is found under K, not I. All alternative/historical names are listed in a separate category with ( ) around the name, exactly they way they appear in the map. The reference is a reference (in some rare cases two references), not necessarily the best one.

Hey !! Have you seen how many posts Matthew Modine has posted about Stranger things and almost always with the theme of ‘finding’ or ‘watching’ the kids !?! I’m super stoked to him being in S3 !!!! Anyway what are your thoughts as you are top analyser for these kind of things !!!
Aw, thanks :). Yeah, I already talked about this pretty extensively (since he was posting hints before the s3 trailer even came out). Here’s a post of where I talked about it - at the bottom of the post it also has links to other posts I did, showing even more evidence that will Will becoming number 12, here .
I’ve talked about it a lot already, but I’ll try to summarize everything and give you the cliff notes version (without getting to bogged down into all the details/evidence) XD. Essentially everything Mathhew Modine (Dr Brenner) has posted, confirmed my suspisions.
Dr Brenner didn’t die in s1, proof here, he’s simply operating in the shadows and still is in charge. I just started reading the Dr Brenner prequel novel (Suspicious Minds) where he says he can tell just by looking at someone whether they are likely to have “potential” i.e powers (hmm… maybe that’s a power in itself?). So my assumption is Brenner was suspicious that any 12 year old boy survived a week in an environment that his colleagues described as having “toxic air”, and a place where full-grown men were killed almost instantly in. Him and other scientists are observing Will and recording him on camera in his sessions to see if Will has ‘potential’. Think about it, since when did therapists take blood pressure, draw blood samples , do weight/ height measurements, and monitor brain activity and record it all on video for ptsd treatment?! And all these tests are implied to happen at every visit! . A gif set I made here of it showing how it’s identical to how they treated El here. (I just started reading the book and Dr B also took blood samples and blood pressure of the adults he suspected had potential too)! And unlike El’s brain wave tests, Will’s are printed out (implying they are probably later being sent away to Brenner). He’s a lab rat to them, plain and simple. And the second they know for certain Will has powers he’ll be taken- Hawkins lab/ the government and Dr. Brenner are playing the long-game with Will (and will kidnap both Will and El at the end of s3).We probably won’t see him in s3 (if so very briefly), and we’ll only see him in s4. I already have many theories and a general outline for what s4 will entail, but I’ll write a whole synopsis of s4 after July 4th. I don’t want to spoil too much of s4 before s3 has even aired, let’s just say it’ll be the darkest most f-ed up season in the series…
And for those who haven’t realized Will has had powers since s1 ep 1, here’s a link to literally every post I’ve made about Will having powers cause there’s SO MUCH EVIDENCE here.
*Also just want to remind all my subscribers that if you want to read all the St theories I’ve written or reblogged about, just go to my blog’s search bar and type in “stranger things theory” to see if I already talked about it there. I love getting your messages :) . I get that there’s a lot of posts, and it would take a while to read through all of them, so if you’re not sure if I’ve already answered it … I’m just saying I’m more likely to respond to questions I’ve already answered if you give me your username cause then I’ll just send you a private message about it . And if the question hasn’t been answered and you specify you want to stay anonymous- I could just take a pic of the question (blur out your name) and post a response. But if you feel more comfortable still writing anonymously (or publicly) I respect that . And I still encourage loads of questions!

aeo’s guide to RP
Hey guys!
I’ve been roleplaying for the better half of my life, and I had the thought today, ‘you know what? It could be cool to make a thing about RPing that may help new RPers or young people learn more about it.’ So I made this. Read if you feel like it ^^ (FYI, this is all for text-based online RP things. Tabletop RPs are not part of this article.)
So, what is RP? I’ve always defined roleplay as ‘collaborative storytelling.’ You take control of a character that you invent, and write what your character will do in a situation with another individual.
Writing a book by yourself is sometimes difficult, because you have to rely solely on yourself, your own life experience, and your own resources. When you write a book with others, it’s a lot different. Your RP partners bring in their own interests and experiences. There is also the layer of mystery- you can’t predict what they will write next, which makes waiting for the next post exciting.
So if you have an original character you want to introduce to the world, RP is a great way to stretch your creative muscles and become a better writer before you try to tackle writing novels or making comics.
How do you RP? There are many ways to find a community of like-minded storytellers. First, you have to figure out what kind of RP you want to do. There are RP groups for fandoms, furries, original universes, and more! If you’re really interested in something, chances are, there is an RP community out there somewhere. This is the most important thing to understand: you should try to interact with others first rather than expecting them to find you. Most people are always extremely grateful and excited for the attention, and they will very likely return the favor. If you have anxiety, that’s ok- TONS of RPers struggle with anxiety, and I haven’t met a single person who has ever been upset or displeased to be approached by someone for RP. You will delight them, they will feel good to be included! 1. You can join an instant messaging RP such as a Discord group. (It’s sometimes more difficult to find these unless you already follow a lot of RP groups and have a lot of friends interested in RP. Post about it on your blog, see if anyone in your friend group is in one!) 2. You can create an RP blog on Tumblr. In order to find people to interact with, you will probably have to interact with other RP blogs first. The way I did it on my TF2 RP blog is to send messages to other blogs, draw the characters of every person that followed me or interacted with me, and tag my RP posts #tf2 rp. People LOVE drawings and direct interactions. 3. You can search for an RP forum to join. One of my go-to places is the RPG Directory: http://rpg-directory.com/ Sometimes, simply googling for something like “pokemon forum RP” helps, too!
4. You can join a MMORPG RP community. Most big-name MMOs have dedicated RP groups on their RP servers. For example, if you wanted to join ESO’s RP scene, check out the ESO RP forum to make connections before you jump into the game. People are usually very friendly and helpful for new RPers and will help you settle in to the community. Here’s some things to help you pick the game that’s right for you (from the list of games I have personally experienced RP): FFXIV ($15 Monthly Sub): https://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/ WoW ($15 Monthly Sub): https://us.battle.net/forums/en/wow/1182815/ ESO (Pay Once, Play Forever): https://www.eso-rp.com/ LotrO (Free to Play!): https://www.lotro.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?539-Laurelin-EN-RP Wildstar (Free to Play!): https://www.wildstar-roleplay.com/
(As a note, Free to Play RP servers tend to be a bit more come-and-go; the subscription-based games tend to have more player retention. If you want to make long term connections, be sure to get friend requests from people you’ve enjoyed writing with, as they might not stick around forever!)
RP flows differently depending on your medium. Instant messaging generally tends to be more fast paced, but results in shorter posts with less descriptions and exposition. Forum RP tends to be much slower paced, but posts are more detailed and lengthy with lots of exposition. MMO RP tends to be incredibly fast paced, but with very little exposition and description, focusing almost entirely on character actions and dialogue (as the video game environment already provides the visual, reducing the need for description). Pick a pacing that is right for you! For me, forums are currently easiest, because my life is busy and I don’t have to be online all the time to have a good story. What are the rules of RP?
A lot of people will say, “the 3 main things you need to avoid are ‘godmoding’, ‘powerplaying’, and ‘metagaming.’ “Godmoding” is taking control of someone else’s character without their consent. In RP, it’s important to write only your own character during interactions. “Powerplaying” is bending the story around your own will. Such as: writing your character as if they are impervious and can easily take over the world with their unlimited power. (For example, your partner’s character is angry with your character and throws a punch at them. Your character avoids the punch effortlessly, grabs the attacker’s hand, breaks it, then tosses them through a window.) “Metagaming” is giving your character knowledge that you have, but your character does not have. (For example, someone told you about the contents of their character’s secret journal out of character, but your character did not read that journal, you should not assume your character knows that information.)
However, I would say these are only symptoms of one simple issue: lack of consent.
Before doing something that could change the story in a significant way, simply ask the people you are RPing with if it is OK with them.
So, I would boil down the ‘most important RP rule’ as simply one rule: the Rule of Consent. It doesn’t just apply to mature topics. It applies to everything.
Communication is key! Chances are, people will be OK with accommodating your vision for the story, or helping you come up with a way to make it work. Before doing something extreme like instigating violence, coming across sensitive information, or introducing a significant conflict, simply communicate your ideas out-of-character to your partners before pursuing it. You will have a much better experience if you simply communicate!
Are there RP taboos I should avoid? How do I stay safe if I want to RP but I’m a minor?
This is a bit of a touchier topic, but the rule of thumb is: If it’s gonna be weird and hard to talk about in person, in real life, and out-of-character, chances are, it’s going to be weird and hard to approach in an RP context. Many people RP as an escape from real-world drama and difficulties; don’t bog down their fantasy with the sorts of things they may be trying to avoid. Go back to the Rule of RP: Consent. Make sure your partner will be comfortable with exploring heavier, taboo topics in their fiction and storytelling. TL;DR- Some people don’t like Game of Thrones. Some people don’t want their RP environment to turn into Game of Thrones. Some people enjoy writing about heavier, ‘adult’ material, but don’t assume everyone does. Try to assume your partner is a minor unless they tell you otherwise. (Obvious exception being, if you explicitly joined an 18+ forum, community, guild, etc. The admins of said community should be doing their best to enforce that everyone joining is 18+.)
Don’t be creepy. RP is a hobby, community storytelling, and should be fun for everyone.
If it stops being fun for you, tell your partner it is not fun. You are not obligated to RP with someone who makes you unhappy or uncomfortable. It is a hobby. If you’re worried that they won’t be your friend anymore if you stop RPing with them, ask yourself if that is because they are manipulating you. A real friend will not make you feel trapped.
And if you are a minor, make sure that you stay safe. Don’t join an 18+ community. Don’t ever give someone your personal information, even if they seem like your friend. It’s very easy to get emotionally invested in the stories you tell through RP, but predators are very good at manipulation. View RP as a creative outlet. Look for an RP community that is right for you, and surround yourself with like-minded people.
Practice emotionally distancing yourself from the content of your stories. It’s good and fun to get invested, but don’t become so invested in the story that it induces anxiety, stress, or makes it hard for you to focus on your real life responsibilities. If something is causing you anxiety, panic episodes, or difficulty sleeping and focusing, listen to your body. It’s telling you something isn’t right. Talk about it with someone you trust, and start distancing yourself from the RP.
RP is for fun! Always remember that. Everyone you RP with should respect that it is for fun, and not something to lose sleep over!
I’m having trouble finding RP partners, getting people to stay interested in my story, or staying interested in it myself. What do I do?
I’ve found that the best way to stay invested and get people interested in your story is to give your character a very strong, attainable goal. Here is an example of a “difficult to RP” character concept. Tim the Traveller is mute. He goes around the world looking for people to help, because he’s a very powerful magic healer. He has no family and no home. People have trouble communicating with him because he can’t talk. But he does his best to help. This character is difficult to RP with because he places the onus of every interaction on the other person. He is involving himself in their stories, but he has no personal goals or challenges to explore, himself. Plus, being mute, it makes it more difficult for him to carry on lengthy conversations with the people he encounters. This character concept can be done in a fun and effective way, but I’d say it is a challenge for someone who is just starting out. Let’s see what we can do to make Tim the Traveller a bit easier to RP with. Tim the Traveller suffered severe burns all over him from an incident when he was a child: a criminal set fire to his parent’s house, killing his father. He is searching the world for where the arsonist fled to. He only has a loose trail of breadcrumbs to follow in his quest for revenge and must constantly search for more information and change trajectories. He attempts to help those he comes across during his travels, but always takes his opportunity to press people for more information, describing the arsonist and praying desperately that he will find a trace of the man that killed his father. This sort of idea of a plot allows you to communicate to your RP partners OOC what your character’s goals are, give them information that they might help your character continue his quest, and in turn, your character also has opportunities to help them with their own goals at the same time. One RP I’ve done in the past that was fun was a case of a grave robber. My character was an incredibly poor street rat-turned-detective, and he was approached with an unusual case: a grave was dug up by a necromancer, the body tampered with, but it was placed back in the grave and the perpetrator was nowhere to be seen. My character was strongly motivated to find the perpetrator because he needed the reward money to take care of his adopted son. With limited information concerning the plot, my character travelled all over the city asking everyone he encountered for whatever information they might have regarding the tampered grave. This allowed me to involve a lot of people in the community and allowed my GM to construct opportunities for those involved to find more evidence, and developed into a very rich and interesting story.
A passive character is harder to RP with. An active character makes things happen.
A wallflower RP character can be fun to play in some circumstances, but without an attainable goal, involving others in your story will be harder. Give them goals and motivations, communicate with your RP partners, and see what sorts of stories can be told!
My RP never goes anywhere. I write starters/approach people, but every interaction I have with people doesn’t ever result in anything. What am I doing wrong? I have found, in my RP experience, your connections will feel more in-depth and your RP more rewarding if you try and see how your character and your friend’s character can develop and change over time. This requires some thinking, plotting, and openness to new ideas. It also requires challenging yourself to write lengthier posts for your partner.
For interesting interactions that go deeper than simple introductions and “how’s the weather” RP, it is beneficial to try and include a few things in your starter post or scene. For me, I like to come up with 3 things to include for every starter I write.
1. A clearly defined setting. Like, what’s the time of day? Is it indoors or outdoors? In a city? Somewhere private? Etc.
2. A motive. Why is your character doing what he’s doing right now? What does he want in the scene right now? If he’s just standing around doing nothing, your RP partner has nothing to latch on to. In some way, what he’s doing should tie back to a goal.
3. A connection to your RP partner’s character in some way. Why is their character, specifically, involved in the scene? Know your partner, and try to learn about your partner’s character’s goals. See if both of your characters’ goals can converge.
If you have trouble coming up with an idea for your RP partner, it’s always nice to message them OOC see what you can plot together. If you approach, rather than be approached, and ask questions and try to plot, you will find you have a much easier time easing into RP with them, and you might make a new friend too!
And that’s it for now! The TL;DR to all this is: 1. Follow the Rule of Consent! 2. Give your character goals and motivations! 3. Learn about your partner’s character and actively involve them! If you have additional questions or want to know where I RP at, feel free to send me a message :D
