Browsing through someone’s Jason Todd tag and can literally feel myself getting bummed out by his life/existence as a character

At this point, I don’t care if I’m appreciating this seemingly forever doomed character incorrectly, I’m clinging to happy/silly notions and also - I’m giving him the joy of having a friend/love interest that will never turn their back on him no matter what self destructive tendencies he has towards any relationship in his life

This friend is going to stick to him like a barnacle

That unfortunate isolation of his Robin days? She will walk to the manor on foot if she has to, the character besmirching from his family? She doesn’t like them anyway and will slap whatever idiot has the gall to say that shit to her face

Is she extremely loyal to her detriment? Has some sort of separation anxiety?? Maybe, but what’s a good character without some kind of flaw

Let him be possessive in that she is the one person that he got to keep in his life and is his alone, who is explicitly loyal to him and not Batman - her loyalty and affection isn’t determined by the line of morality he follows

She’ll follow him to hell if he asked type of thing

Jason was the first to grow a crush. It was hopeless, there was dramatic pining ala romantic period drama novel - it was adorable. Bruce was genuinely worried he couldn’t keep their vigilant identities secret ‘cause Robin always wound up a blushing flustered mess whenever she came into the picture - he was very relieved when Robin calmed down after a while

It becomes a whole complicated will-they-won’t-they thing ala unfortunate Jason vs Robin [This is far more innocent than his concerns about his place in Bruce’s life as Robin] before she started getting suspicious about the shared identity

Vanessa started getting a crush much later…..unfortunately shortly before Jason’s relationship with Bruce started to grow strained.

There’s a whole scene in my where Robin is brooding on the rooftop of his old apartment building. Conversations are had, her tentative confirmation of his identity and fear of him running away grew, and in a attempt to get him to stick around, she kissed him

It’s a very desperate/hopeless situation

Her family took what money they had and moved after Jason’s death, looking to get her professional help after a depression spiral

She has a younger sister named Naomi

She moved back to Gotham and lived with her uncle before graduating.

Subsequently started looking for trouble and fights to get into. Few of the Bats got involved a few times before it was Dick that clocked who she was

Tried inviting her over, you know, in a attempt to friendliness and catching up

She did not vibe with the manor’s current state of erasing any reminders of Jason

Definitely did not vibe with Bruce and his current…..Bruce-ness

She still remembers their last interaction in which she verbally flipped out on him and blamed him for everything at Jason’s funeral

And the unwanted visit to her room she got where he basically threatened her to keep her silence [Mind you, she only had an inkling of their secret] - just the idea of this spiraling grown man waiting for her 15 year old ass while her sister was sleeping on the top bunk still burns at her mind is a level of discomfort I wanted to add on top of Bruce’s violent/angry/suicidal behavior

She probably thought he was threatening her family’s livelihood or something - whether it was true or not will remains unclear to her

Gets into vigilantism. Sorry, no wild curls flowing free in the wind for her, she’s keeping her mane in a tight braid where it won’t become a nuisance. I’m basically giving her Jason’s hoodie/vest, muzzled face combo….. and brass knuckles

[I got the scene of Bucky Barnes whipping someone in the face with a heavy chain link stuck in my head and thought ‘Yes, this is her method: Grab a heavy object and beat someone with it’]

Vibes with Stephanie, her opinion of the Bats lessens even further with their shitty treatment of her and tries protecting Stephanie from the resulting short lived Robin tenure fallout

Jason coming back includes him basically stalking her to see how she was doing, grows very confused to find her living with her uncle [He’ll look into the family situation later] and just……sits on that rooftop across from her building and stares at her

It’s giving very reminiscing of an old crush curiosity, is it still there or is it not? He doesn’t give it further thought

This is a purely self indulgent scenario: She looks for him after his Joker/Batman confrontation. Them in her flimsy excuse of a safe house, her desperately cleaning away the bloody wound of his throat, anxiously reciting prayers - cut to scene of her quietly watching him let out his frustration and humiliation on her sad measly furniture.

Whether she pulls him into a hug or trying to help him come down from that breakdown is still up to consideration of whether or not Jason is the type to allow that kind of thing in this point of his life [Further pointers to his character are appreciated]

Can she say anything? Will her attempts to comfort him be met with animosity?? After all, what’s her affirmations of her continued friendship in the face of his father’s rejection?

Idk what he got up to after that confrontation, I assume he kept his head down and quietly continued with his business

Just another bit of canon history; when Talia was introduced, she and Dick were explicitly both college students. Like the ages of these characters are fluid and often depend on what the editorial wants at any given time. Dick and Bruce had a similar relationship as Steve and Bucky Barnes originally, but one got reconned into more equals and the other into more nuclear family, but it’s not like this happened organically. These are decisions made by creators and corporations (many of whom want to shut down queer speculation)

I think too, sometimes fandom gets so wrapped up in the fandom side of it that they forget the rest of the world. Inside of the comic community, Dick and Bruce’s relationship has always been up for debate…but inside the rest of the world, the idea that they are lovers wasn’t even a question. In the not so distant past, when being gay was openly derided, just mentioning Robin was to invoke queerness with people who didn’t care at all about comics. Treating the hard push from DC to consider them father and son explicitly as gospel is ignoring DC’s vested interest in promoting only the most carefully sanitized queerness and hiding anything that could provoke any kind of controversy. Corporations want queer characters to be left in a box until they can make money off queer communities, not characters that could threaten their straight male fans. Dick and Bruce are basically father and son! Bruce and Clark as basically (or in DKOS, biologically) brothers! Join us in “protecting” the characters that cishet white men spend money on!

Soo, today it came to my mind this dream I had like a year ago. I remember I was reading something about Damian Wayne and the Bat-family, an his character really caught my attention so I did a bit of research and found out that there is not a lot of people who like him. And I get it, he is not precisely original or charismatic and his arcs are very weird. But something that I found very interesting was the fact that every single time he has a very tragic ending, like super dramatic. He's some short of sacrificial lamb, the only way he becomes a "true" hero is by sacrificing himself. Because, for some rason, there is no way he grows up as a happy, semi-stable, sensible person. I remember thinking that was really depressing, is like he is destined to be an unstable, unhappy kid forever.

I also remember comparing his situation with some other characters that had gone through a similar situation than him, like the other robins, Cass, Raven, Terra (the one from the animated series) and even Bucky Barnes (from the comics) and Natasha. One thing led to the other and I started wondering how different could be the life of Damian if he was on the Marvel universe, specially since they are experts on rescuing children from assassin's schools (Natasha and Bucky have done it at least twice each and there is a lot more arcs around it even in the MCU, if you ask me, a little too many times, I really hope we're done with that trope).

And then I fall asleep, I don't remember the whole dream now, but I remember two things clearly: 1) Natasha was in Gotham City and 2) she was friends with Alfred. When I woke up I tried to make sense to all the information and finally I came up with a story.

I had this on the back of my brain since last Christmas and I never came to anything more than just the idea. So I resolved to put this in here and see if someone else is willing to take this idea and make something with it. If not at least I'll get it out of my mind. So please don't judge me too harsh.

Here we go:

Valerie and Franklin Richards have combined their super-abilities to create some sort of spaceship that can jump to every multiverse. Fascinated with their discovery they want to make some sort of map of the multiverse. But soon they realize that only the two of them don't give avast to such a big task. They need explorers that can help them track record of every single universe, and they have to choose them carefully. One of the chosen ones is Natasha Romanoff, who's well known for her clean and discreet work, the spy, willing to take a break of her crazy life, accepts the invitation with enthusiasm. That's how she gets to land in Earth 2, there she meets a young Alfred and their friendship starts (they keep in touch somehow).

Time passes, and at some point Nat finds herself in Gotham city again, for business. She's staying with Alfred who introduces her to Bruce and Damian. At some moment she has a conversation with Bruce where she ends up revealing something about her past in the red room. He is very intrigued by that and starts asking som questions, but she is not very comfortable sharing more information with him, so he tells her about Damian, he's very worried for his kid's future, and doesn't know how to help the kid. She sympathizes with him, but is still reluctant to open about her past and tells him that the best he can do is to love his kid and show him he cares (very basic but helpful advice, I specifically recall this dialogue: "It's great you are trying to help, Bruce, but we are not a club of «reformed trained assassins», we are not precisely happy to find more people like us").

Bruce keeps thinking about that conversation and gets to the conclusion that Damian needs someone like Nat to guide him in his healing journey. So he goes to her and asks her a favor: to please help his son. Natasha is not very sure about getting involved, but after a long conversation with Alfred and Bruce, they decide to let Damian go with Nat to her universe for three days, she will show the kid her life and the life of other "reformed trained assassins".

So that's what happens, Bruce tells Damian he's going to learn new spy skills with a professional and then leaves him in Nat's hands. They travel to the Marvel universe and Damian learns that fate is not written and that he can have whatever life he wants.

Flipping Legacies, middle/end part of Chapter 8, yes this is out of order shush

Snacks are churros grabbed from a street vendor, mostly because they smelled divine while passing by. Natasha grabs enough for six, plus a few extra. Between the super soldiers, the immortals, and the growing children, someone will eat them, she’s sure.

Arms full of churros, she lets herself into the apartment and holds the door open for Nightwing. Drakov’s head pops up from the breakfast nook at the second set of footsteps.

“Drakov, Nightwing,” Natasha introduces shortly. “Nightwing, one of my first trainers and the only one left alive, Drakov, also known as the Winter Soldier or Bucky Barnes.”

Nightwing slows for a second and visibly winces. “...how is Captain America taking that?”

“Mm,” Natasha hums with a mouthful of churro, passing a bag to Drakov.

“Badly,” Drakov says dryly.

“He doesn’t know Drakov is here right now,” Natasha says.

Clint exits the bathroom and works his way down the hall. About halfway down the hall, he registers the vigilante that doesn’t live there and starts grinning.

Natasha raises an eyebrow.

Nightwing catches the look and turns around. Natasha edges her way around because she desperately wants to catch this entire interaction.

Sue her. She’s a spy. Nosy is literally her job description.

Nightwing beams. It’s the only proper word for it.

Clint launches himself at the vigilante, and what follows can only be described as a casual roughhouse. It’d be deadly for most anyone else facing either of them. It’s fast, full strength, and utterly silent.

They break apart as fast as they started, grinning, neither out of breath. They’re both grinning like loons.

“Churro?” Nightwing offers.

“Fuck yes,” Clint says.

This is a normal interaction. Alright. Natasha is not asking.

“I gotta know,” Drakov says, amused. “How long have you two known each other?”

Clint smirks, a bit. Oh. Oh no. Bozhe moy.

“Your call, my dude,” Clint says. “I’m not the one with a secret identity.”

Natasha honestly forgot that no one but her and JARVIS had put everything together to then threaten Batman in the daytime.

“I’ve known him,” Nightwing says, with a deliberateness that speaks volumes, “for longer than Batman’s had Robin.”

Natasha very carefully does not choke. Clint does.

She pounds him on the back while watching Drakov, whose eyebrows have nearly hit his hairline.

“You do realize that you can’t be saying that to just anyone, right?” Drakov says.

“He was trained by Batman,” Natasha says dryly. “I’m pretty sure that’s a challenge to say, come discover my secret identity, I dare you.”

Nightwing laughs. “If Clint reported my involvement with his mission, I’ll eat Batman’s cowl after a bad night.”

“Of course I fucking didn’t,” Clint coughed out. “I would have been laughed right back into jail if I reported a fucking nine year old doing anything but flips on a trampoline.”

Natasha exchanges a look of resigned horror with Drakov. Her own words from the previous morning haunt her: Imagine if Clint couldn’t turn off the assassin like us. So lethal, so graceful, so talented, so obvious. So ripe for HYDRA’s picking, way back in 1996. Imagine if Clint didn’t have Coulson as a handler, who was notorious for going back for his agents no matter what and had the Director of SHIELD’s ear.

Coulson would have believed Clint. Which meant Coulson was not his handler.

Oops. Agent Barton had a tragic accident on a mission. We have to bury an empty casket, her own words echo back at her again.

“Where was your handler.” The words basically fall out of her mouth without permission.

Clint does a double take at her. She doesn’t know what she looks like, but based on the fact that she’s swiftly relieved of everything she might drop, she must look like she’s about to pass out.

“I ditched him,” Clint admits, grabbing her by the shoulders and shoving her into a chair. “Considering I later wound up killing the guy they sent me to protect, I’m okay with that mark on my record. Unfortunate failure is better than intentional sabotage.”

That old Winter Soldier has had his fun, but he’s a little too feisty.

Nightwing quirks a smile at her. It looks rueful. “However bad you think it is, I can guarantee it was worse.”

“Dick,” Clint hisses. Natasha knows it’s his name. It’s said as an insult.

Natasha buries her head in her arms. “How close did you come to being serumed up and brainwashed into doing some shadowy underground totalitarian government’s bidding?”

Nightwing rocks back on his heels. “Actually, you’re right on the money. How did you do that?”

Natasha pops her head up so fast her eyesight can’t compensate. “You. Don’t talk.”

She grabs Clint. “Where the fuck was Coulson, and why didn’t you refuse a handler that would deliberately fail to catch you?”

Clint looks like he’s doing complicated math in his head and he’s losing track of the numbers. “I’m definitely missing something,” he finally says.

“She’s talking about the fact that if the Black Widow was willing to run with a normal human, and have the normal human not be dead weight, then the normal human would be utterly spectacular as a super soldier,” Drakov says levelly.

He’s just. Like. Us. But he’d be better if he was serumed up and had all five senses fully working.

Clint and Nightwing exchange a glance. She knows that glance. That’s a, wow, shit was even more fucked than I originally thought it was glance.

“Oh my god,” she says faintly.

“—we’ll be—I’m sorry, what was that?”

“They did.”

“What?”

“They revived the Court of Owls,” Nightwing says patiently. “And Batman and I took care of them. Again.”

“Oh, well--”

“And so did Robin, again.”

Natasha looks at Drakov despairingly.

Clint opens his mouth and shuts it. He looks at the ceiling and mutters something Natasha doesn’t quite catch, but makes Drakov snort.

Nightwing has a smile on his face that’s a threat. It lingers in the corners of his mouth, around the edges of his domino. It’s a smile that Coulson would be envious of. “Gotham’s a little...much for the Mainlanders. But Clint’s welcome to run with the Bats anytime. Birds of a feather flock together, right? Especially the ones that get stalked to be brainwashed assassins.”

Natasha puts her head back onto the table and gives quiet thanks that even Hydra wasn’t willing to fuck around with Gotham’s brand of crazy.

She pushes back from the table and stands up. “You crazy kids have fun. Drakov, don’t enable them. I’m going for a run.”

“Bye!” Nightwing calls after her. “Don’t forget a rebreather!”

She shakes one as she escapes out the door in response. Get her out of here. Now.
