Thanks for the tag! This is such an interesting idea and I’ve enjoyed seeing all the responses. I had to do some digging to find my oldest art and turns out i don’t remember where much of it is and i guess i haven’t backed it up anywhere so as of now some of the oldest stuff i have is from 2017/18.
OLDEST ART I CAN FIND: 2017-18
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For a long time I considered myself as mostly a portrait artist. I loved drawing people's faces and had a fear and aversion to drawing full bodies. All of these are from 2018 (the black and white one might be 2017) but I wish I'd been able to find even older art than these because the skill jump was huge between high school and my first couple years in uni. In high school I never really used references when drawing and despite taking a ton of art classes I never really paid attention to the fundamentals so whatever I made would come out looking wonky. So fast forward to freshman year of uni and I really started taking that more seriously and I would find images I liked of celebrities and draw them as closely as I could. I was also dabbling in ballpoint pen drawings at the time but couldn't crack a proper technique until later.
I mainly did only traditional art until I got my first job after high school and could save up for an XP Pen drawing monitor and I started dabbling in digital art. I'd owned a pen tablet before from Wacom years before but it was also the kind that had no screen on it and I hated the experience of drawing on a blank slate but needing to keep my eyes on my laptop screen. It felt extremely unnatural so I only used it a few times and then gave up. So having a tablet with a screen directly on it opened up a whole new world for me but I really struggled with learning the ins and outs of digital art. I hated everything I was making but was determined to get better, and the most important thing was I knew I didn't want to go for the level of realism that I usually liked in traditional art. I liked doing cartoony stuff a lot too so I wanted to explore new styles through digital.
FIRST ART POSTED ONLINE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was difficult to find the actual first art I ever posted online! I have some ancient Deviant Art accounts that probably still have that old art but I don't have the login stuff anymore ;-; I started using instagram in 2012 but sort of don't use that account on the left anymore. Once Instagram implemented AI a couple years ago I sort of nuked it and ended up deleting most of my archive on that account. I mainly use that account to message irl friends. But my earliest art on IG was all straight from my sketchbooks and most of it was like chicken scratch. Very messy, unpolished, and rushed.
I've pretty much always done tons of fan art. I drew the Draco Malfoy thing in the middle for a Dramione fic I was writing at the time--this must have been 2016 or 17... I was/am obsessed with Kylo Ren (and reylo in general) so I drew him a ton. I also was working on my own OCs (the Knight lady in the second image at the top of this post). My art professors at uni kept pushing me to get out of my box and focus on more conceptual/non fan art stuff which I found terrifying. By this point I was growing more comfortable with digital art--in 2020 I (perhaps irresponsibly) used my pandemic stimulus check to buy an ipad and apple pencil and procreate and having a smaller, more portable tablet made it so much easier to practice more often and I think that's when digital art really started clicking for me even though it took a lot longer to actually start developing my own style. I made a second art account on instagram (with this current username) to post all my fanart in since one professor told me it might be unprofessional for me to host fan art on my "serious" art account.
MOST RECENT STUFF:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The top two are admittedly from 2021 but I was and still am super proud of that entire body of work. For my art major senior 'thesis' I had to develop a body of work and set it up in an exhibition at uni. I threw myself into that and by then had really managed to nail down a good ballpoint pen technique that satisfied what I wanted to portray in my art. This process involved layers and layers of delicate hatching with ballpoint pens and it ruined my eyesight and because each piece took me so long I was experiencing wrist pain often. The whole series was supposed to be about fear and madness, hence the super garish and intense colors and weird imagery. I made like 10 or so drawings like this but I haven't really made any more ballpoint stuff since. It just takes way too long and I burnt myself out severely just completing that body of work but I'm still really proud of it. Maybe I'll return to the pens one day...
As for the digital stuff, since I graduated uni I jumped headlong into further developing my digital body of work. Most of it still is admittedly fan art but nothing else has helped me grow quite like fan art so no issue there. I've made several short and long form comics and worked on more illustrative stuff. I have other/new OCs and ships that I draw quite often when I'm not making wrestling fan art and I try to push myself to keep going out of my comfort zone. I have always haaated drawing backgrounds or ornamental stuff but for the past while I've challenged myself to really give a shit and actually put in the effort and it's slowly paying off. I'm still not 100% satisfied with where I am now but compared to where I started I think it's pretty neat :')
Ok here's a little thing i thought would fun for any artists to show off their progress at learning art (plus I'm nosey🤭).
Show off the oldest drawings you did (or the oldest that you can still find), the first things you were confident enough to upload online, and your most recent drawings and talk about them and show off how much you've progressed :)
Tumblr media
Probably gonna end up missing some people, but I'm tagging a bunch of cool artists I follow/am mutuals with and am nosey to see how they started out, but no pressure :)
@fantasticalleigh, @thlayli-ra, @heelhausen, @stupidmarkzone, @2ndcitynightmare, @punk-o-ween, @normallypassingby, @tvheit, @seasonal-depression-of-punk
And if you wanna have a look at my old stuff, I've got it below =)
Oldest Drawings I Can Find
Of course, the first is an OC. Never did anything with her tho. Notice the lack of forehead and elbows, the arms that barely reach the hips, how indishtinguishable each part of the body is from one another. They're a perfectly smooth pole. and of course those wings. This is the first thing in my first proper sketchbook when I decided I was gonna start taking art more seriously. This would have been when i started secondary in 2014 at 11 years old. And I can't find anything from before that, since I never kept anything in a proper book/folder.
Second image is another of the first drawings in the book. It was my first closeup of a face, and also my first time drawing anime. I know I'm not the only artist who was desperate to learn to draw an anime-style as a kid. I remember doing this while on holiday, trying to follow an online tutorial, taking about 4 hours to get the outcome I did, and getting so frustrated that I couldn't get it to look right, that I was almost brought to tears. I'm pretty sure this was one of those "I'm never drawing again! >:(" moments, lol. Looking back, it was a pretty good first attempt. But I guess I was always a bit of a perfectionist, lol. Funnily enough, while I carried the anime eyes forward in my art style for years, to this day, I still can't draw a proper full anime style character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First Drawings I Uploaded Online
I put these on insta to show my mates from school. The first picture was an attempt at a close up face with the new brush markers i'd got for christmas. This was 2017 just before i turned 14. Pretty sure I copied the design from an art tutorial book, that was supposed to be hyper-realistic (another christmas present). But I just couldn't bring that to life so just did what I could. Also, first time I used a signature. My signature's very different nowadays cos it's based on my tumblr username and not me actual name. But yeah. I was tryna get more professional I guess.
Second pic is the first full body piece I uploaded a few days later. Again, used the drawing books trying to learn how to draw flowy clothes. Think it was a book about drawing anime clothes that I used for this (another christmas present). By this point, each body part could move seperately and had joints. Also note the anime eyes, cos my simpler-but-still-anime-inspired eyes were something I stuck with a long ass time. This was the style I drew most often, and could usually do without having references (but obviously for this drawing specifically, I had the reference for the clothes). Had a lot of trouble with perspective, so all my characters faced forward, and later they would always face a 3/4 angle. And they could never lean or reach forwards cos I just couldn't get that to look right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most Recent Pieces
The most most recent is on the left, being my most recent closeup of a face. Still has a cartoonish edge with the lineart but much more realistic. And I'm fucking with this semi-realistic look atm. Tbh I dunno if i'd have the patience for the tiny details in hyperrealism. Also, fun story, in 2021 when I was doing my a-levels, I did an art piece that we were free to do in any style we wanted, and my teacher saw mine and was like “I wish you’d done it as realism instead of a cartoon style :(“ but it was actually my best attempt at realism and she hadn’t even realised. So I dunno, maybe I’m not cut out for realism 😂😂 I like my style rn tho so who cares
Then I got my most recent drawing of a (almost) full body. I got joints and decent hands and proportions and more body details.
Also this last year is the first time I've really got into digital. I always used to just do pen and paper. I even got a cheap drawing tablet, but couldn't get used to drawing on one surface and the image being up on a seperate screen. So I could never get the lines right. I did draw on my old ipad for a while which was easier, but the stylus was one of those with the thick rubber ball on the end, rather than a fine nib. Again, I had trouble cos I couldn't tell where it would register the contact with the screen and draw the line, which made it hard to do details. I got a new ipad a little while back that supports apple pencil, so I got one for it. And it's so much easier now that I've got a fine nib and can see where I'm drawing. I'm in love with drawing digital atm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But yeah. That's how i've drawn over the years. Mental to see how much my style has changed and improved :) makes me feel better when I get frustrated with a drawnig and think I'm shit. Cos I know I'm getting better with each new drawing, even if it's only baby steps.

today's thoughts: Helena, the argumentative.
there's an interesting combination about her. she's the devil's advocate. philosophical, a centrist and, most dangerously, a true neutral. the way her brain works, she can compartmentalise and rationalise almost anything. she can twist and turn, and justify to absurd levels, but she'll hit the necessary criteria and good luck telling her off if she successfully mimics the system and its rules.
makes me think it'd be an interesting scenario. or even a nice pre-established relationship point. if someone were to be held accountable for a dubious act they committed (or maybe they are being set up). and if their "fate" was to be decided by a court or an entity, Hel might actually be uniquely qualified to argue on someone's behalf as a representative.

With the impending implementation of Project 2025, I suspect that AO3 will come under fire as well. And given that it’s a US based organisation, and the US has wedged itself somehow into every possible thing, I would also suspect that this will have global impacts. I cannot be certain of it - I’m certainly not an expert on political things and Trump remains, frankly, unpredictable - but I have personally found it’s more helpful to prepare beforehand than to scramble to keep myself afloat in the midst of a crisis. Knowing how important our favourite stories are to so many of us, here’s what I suggest:
Readers, I recommend you find your favourite stories again. Go all the way back in your bookmarks. Tell the authors you appreciate them, and you love their work. I think we could all use some nice words right now. If you want to keep the story, I recommend downloading it: here’s a guide on how to do so from the AO3 FAQ. I personally have wanted to take up bookbinding for a hot second; I might print off my favourite fics for myself and figure out how to bind them. The OTW also recommends downloading your favourites - see link below.
Authors, I recommend you keep your manuscripts. Download them onto an external flash drive and save them for a rainy day four or so years from now. Even the ones you don’t like are worth keeping - I guarantee you somebody else likes them even if you don’t. (I’m speaking to myself here, too.) Project 2025 has blatantly laid out a ban of pornography, and they will take that to mean whatever they want it to; I suggest you don’t even keep your fics on a Google drive if possible it’s definitely easier to keep them all online, trust me, I know, but so does the government. Corporations do not care about you: they will sell you out to whoever is willing to pay. Remember also to turn off AI scraping wherever possible, or better yet use sites that don’t engage in that behaviour.
For further reading from people more qualified than I, here’s the OTW’s statement on what their plans are so far.
I hope I’m wrong. I honestly would love nothing more. But more importantly, we will get through this. Humanity has told stories and put blorbos in situations for literal millennia. We’ll see the other side of this.

The main feature apps like this offer are QOL improvements like different layouts, fonts, reading statistics and timers, and the aforementioned download features that are already a part of Ao3.
And if you want to use an app for those features -- honestly, I don't see why not? But be aware that Ao3 supports user-created skins that can look like literally anything you want (and although you do have to know enough CSS to make a theme yourself, lots of fans out there make AO3 skins just for fun -- you just gotta talk to one of them to ask how to make the changes you'd prefer and most likely they're happy to help out) and there are userscripts that act as site extensions that provide all those features and more (with, again, people actively developing them that you can ask help from to write your own if you don't like any of the ones available)
If you don't want the hassle of finding this stuff out or talking to people to ask for these features, you do you I guess. But don't ever pay money for one of these apps, no matter what it does. If it's showing you adds, if it's asking you to buy it, DO NOT, they're asking you to pay for features other fans have already provided for free through other methods.
WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS
Tumblr media
WHO IS USING THIS
AN APP??? THEY HAVE A FUNCTIONING WEBSITE
THE LAST FUNCTIONING WEBSITE
#Like tbh I don't hate the idea of user-made Ao3 apps#But I also think it's not possible to do that on monetised platforms without going against the spirit of Ao3's rules#they don't let you directly link Kofi or Patreon#so an app having a tip button/ads/premium purchase version would also be out of the question for me#But that's me speaking from a place of someone who likes doing dev shit as a hobby#I honestly think that if I went on FD right now I could find a decent Ao3 reader app that *is* operating within the spirit of the rules#I assume there's more than one of us out there but you wouldn't find any of these apps on the damn App Store/ITunes#which have the sole purpose of making money#and making money off of fandom is against the principles of OTW as far as I've understood them#And I do think Ao3 could use some QOL features there in the main interface! I do!#And not all of them are stuff like a dark mode you can do with scrub code!#some of the features I mentioned above *are* pretty complicated to implement#So I see the appeal of apps like these especially for people who don't have a broad community of other fans#who don't maybe even know anyone who does themes or userscripts on the side#Who may not even know all the features of their *browsers* because they've grown up in an app-first ecosystem#(or have shit browsers like Chrome that try to be as app-like as possible)#And the people writing these apps see a niche. Because they see users of Ao3 not knowing how Ao3 works#(and maybe don't know how Ao3 works themselves)#and go “huh there's a need I could fulfill there huh?”#The problem isn't the creation of the tools themselves -- it's the monetisation of them#And I think it would be better to focus on communicating *that*#and not assuming technical competence#Like most people don't even RTFM#and even when they do they might not *know* what some of the things in the manual are#So going “why didn't you just [already implemented feature of Ao3]\[userscript]” means nothing to them#they don't know what a userscript is#They don't know *that* you can DIY this stuff let alone *how* to DIY this stuff#and condescendingly telling them “you should just [do something that is unfamiliar and sounds complicated]”#will only make them thing “okay. But if you're not gonna tell me how then an app someone *already made* for that is easier. So fuck you.”#*handwaves at those last points* to be clear this is not what I think OP or anyone in this thread is saying

Hi fellow adventurers!! A few weeks ago i caught wind of "Delicious in Dungeon". I'm not really an anime person, but I am a TTRPG, CRPG, and cooking person- . And holy shit. It is so good i  convinced my partner to binge read the whole thing. I'm caught up on dungeon meshi, the anime, and just yesterday i also finished dungeon meshi, the manga.
Its rare to come across a serialized story that is so thematically cohesive and knows its characters so well. All of the bonus content like the artbooks and monster tidbits are just the icing on top.
So, inspired by Ryōko Kui's writing and illustration I'm going to attempt to create a recipe for every single Delicious in Dungeon recipe!-
Today that means Huge Scorpion and Walking Mushroom hotpot is on the menu!
(As always you can find the cooking instructions and full ingredient list under the break-)
MY NAMES CROSS NOW LETS COOK LIKE ANIMALS
SO, “what goes in to a Huge Scorpion and Walking Mushroom hotpot?” YOU MIGHT ASKThis is one of the pricier dishes until we get to the kelpies and dragons of the menu-
Rock lobster tail
Porcini mushrooms
Shiitake mushrooms
Snow fungus
Small potatos
Fensi (glass noodles)
Water
OPTIONAL: your choice of dipping sauces
There was a crossover/promotional event in Shibuya which featured various realworld dishes from the series. They had one for Huge Scorpion and Walking Mushroom, but they used prawns.  while those cook better in a hotpot, they also didn't look enough like the scorpion for me, they also used udon noodles for the slime and a seaweed/kale(?) mixture for the algae. If you're looking for substitutes due to price or availability i would start with those ingredients.
AND, “what does a Huge Scorpion and Walking Mushroom hotpot taste like?” YOU MIGHT ASKI hope Senshi would forgive me for technically cooking the lobster outside the pot, once he tastes it.
Okay im always partial to veggies but wowowowowowowoowowowow the snow fungus and the mushrooms tasted soooooooooooo good in the lobster stock
A nice delicate layering of different flavors
Try to get a bite with the lobster meat and shiitake together, dip in butter then chili- trust me
Its up to you what texture you prefer if you want to put the noodles in at the end or put them in halfway through the meal. Either way dont go for eating those first as theyre very filling
I think this would pair well with a citrus drink, something light and clarifying
This would also pair well with being extremely high and hungry (if you feel safe cooking while inebriated lol) very calorically dense
For the trial run I did one lobster tail in the pot with everything else, and one lobster tail off to the side to be picked apart. The former is more in spirit with a hotpot, but it got rubbery as the meal went on and lost its nice taste. The latter may be a bit more work but all you have to do still is boil it and set it aside. I found it held up much better. It was also easier to get inside the shell.
. If you have hardshell maine lobster available, i think it would be superior to rock lobster (keep in mind crustaceans will get rubbery if cooked too long in the pot) . Green onions and/or lotus root would make excellent additions
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From getting the ingredients out to sitting down and eating, id say it took maybe 30 minutes max? It'd vary on how fast you can prep vegetables and get the various implements heated.
Hotpots are not something i do very often as i'm usually just feeding myself. I think thats why a hotpot makes perfect sense to start the series off. If you want to set the tone of "take care of yourself, eat food with others, and use what you have" (generally speaking) there is nothing more simplistic, flexible, and defeats-the-purpose-if-you-eat-it-alone than a hotpot. Gather around and let your friends bring ingredients to the pot if you want to fill your heart up extra full <3
I'm doing something different here because unlike previous recipes where i used a bunch of different sources and made my own recipe out of hodge-podging it, or just used another persons recipe entirely if they did it really well, i made this more whole-cloth based off of what i had available, what I could discover through research, and my existing knowledge. Instead of the recipe being 50/50 original, this one is more 20/80. So. I'll pass the final verdict off to you guys :D
What would you rate this recipe out of 10? (with 1 being food that makes one physically sick and 10 being food that gives one a lust for life again.) Did you love it, did you hate it? What're your thoughts on what I could do different, and what would you have done instead?
🐁 ORIGINAL RESIPPY TEXT BELOW 🐁
Ingredients:
2 Rock lobster tails
3 Porcini mushrooms
2 Shiitake mushrooms
Snow fungus (a good handful, should rehydrate in the hotpot)
2 Small waxy potatos
Fensi (glass noodles)
Water/lobster stock
Method:
Lightly rinse all of your vegetables beforehand and let them dry.
Vertically slice the porcini mushrooms. Cut off and dice the stems of the shiitake mushrooms. You can slice the tops if youd like.
Peel and cube the potatoes, roughly an inch each.
For the lobster tails; Boil a pot of salted water. Keep the shell on. Weigh the largest tail and add 1 minute of cooking time for every ounce of weight.
When done, strain the lobster from the water. Pour the water into your hotpot as the base. Serve the lobster on the side so people can pick the meat out to dip into the hotpot.
Bring the hotpot to a simmer. Add the potato cubes, snow fungus, mushrooms, and noodles.
OPTIONAL: this wasnt in the show, but its fun having sauces on the side :) i had oyster sauce, dry seasoned chili dip, melted butter, and soy sauce available

Lancer Tactics dialogue layout crisis of faith
(from this month's backer update)
Every so often, I'll run into something in development that eats away at me until it pushes me to a crisis of faith and I have a breakdown, burn down a bunch of work, and build something better from the ashes. These are moments of transformation and we're almost always able to come out the other side with something much better than what we started with.
This all sounds very dramatic until you take a step back and see the issue in question is just, like, the layout of a menu. But if medieval priests were able to have schisms over angels on pins I can have strong feelings about graphic design, dammit!
This month's episode revolved around how we're doing character dialogue. For reference the plan was to do a standard 4-slot visual-novel talking heads layout. I call it a 4-slot because there's usually four positions that characters can stand; two on the left, two on the right:
Tumblr media
I had it ingame, and it was working. But... something felt off. Do you see the difference between every one of the above examples and this?
Tumblr media
It's all about perspective, baby.
Answer: all the character art in those examples are drawn at a slight angle so they can be flipped back and forth to be made like they're looking at each other.
Trying to do this with the perspective we chose early — straight on — makes for a chorus line of weirdos who are looking directly into your soul as they ostensibly chat with each other. Credulity is strained; the illusion of these puppets interacting in the same space is paper-thin.
(I was skeptical of choosing this perspective for this reason, but we ultimately went with it to make the customizable assets in the portrait maker easier to fit together)
We tried a bunch of different layouts, but they all at least one of these problems:
they'd stare into your soul while ostensibly directing comments elsewhere.
they felt like text messages; this would be fine if that's what we were going for, but we wanted something that could represent face-to-face conversations. (Tactical Breach Wizards was able to pull this style off because they had little 3D dioramas to go along with it)
or, most damning of all, they felt like zoom calls.
Tumblr media
So, my heart aflutter and spirit in want, I spent a day doing a research dive into various dialogue layouts (bless the Game UI Database!) to see if any other games had managed to pull this character art perspective off. I ended up with this massive non-chronological taxonomic tree:
Tumblr media
(fullsize here)
The type of layout that particularly caught my eye was this style where each character had their own little box. These layouts borrow a concept from comic books called "closure" where the space and time between characters are left blank. Freed from the constraints of trying to simulate a single space, these layouts allow the reader to fill in the blanks with something that feels more true-to-life than anything we'd be able to render ourselves.
Tumblr media
I was especially impressed with the dynamism of Tales of Symphonia and The World Ends With You; rather than sticking to single slots they would animate the entire panels moving around to indicate motion an relative position of characters.
So we threw out the old code and copied them. Here's what we've come up with:
Tumblr media
We'll be able to have portraits interact, like smacking each other (I felt like a kid hitting two action figures together, lol)
Tumblr media
We can also apply effects like princess-leia-holograms and full-screen "lighting" effects like warning banners:
Tumblr media
Carpenter and I came up with a number of arrangements that the portraits can smoothly transition between:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've also implemented support for choices during a dialogue, potentially leading to branching paths.
Tumblr media
Overall, I feel SO much better about this system than our initial designs. It might feel a little more cartoony, but I think we're making a cartoony game so that's not a problem.
Whew. We bit a lot off to chew with this project. I feel like I just made a second visual novel game engine inside of the first. Fingers crossed that it all ends up worth it.

do you have any advice for those in the very early stages of thesis-writing? currently desperately clinging to the mantra of "shitty first drafts," et al
Unfortunately, there is no place where you will more whole-assedly have to embrace the "shitty first draft" mantra than in academic writing, especially in thesis writing, especially if this is your first-ish crack at an advanced and major piece of original research. I'm not sure if this is for an undergraduate senior thesis, a MA-level thesis, or (my true and heartfelt sympathies) a PhD dissertation, but the basic principles of it will remain the same. So there is that, at least. This means that yes, you will write something, you may even feel slightly proud of it, and then you will hand it into your supervisor and they will more or less kindly dismantle it. You have to train yourself to have a thick skin about this and not take it as a personal insult, and if your supervisor is remotely good at their job (not all of them are, alas) they will know how to be tactful about it and not make it feel like a direct and extensive commentary on your private worth as a person. But you will have to swallow it and do what you can, which can include -- if you're the one who has done the research and know that's how you want to present it and/or you are correct about it -- pushing back and having a conversation with them about how you think your original approach does work best. But that will come later. The first step is, yes, to mentally gird yourself to receive critical feedback on something that you have worked hard on, and to understand that no matter how much you grump and grumble and deservedly vent to your friends and so on, implementing the feedback will usually make your piece better and stronger. That is the benefit of working with a trained expert who knows what makes a good piece of research in your particular academic field, and while it doesn't get easier, per se, at least it gets familiar. Be not afraid, etc.
If you're in the writing stage, I assume that you've moved past the topic-selection and general-research stage, but allow me to plump once more the services of your friendly local university library. You can (or at least you can at mine and probably in any decently well-equipped research university) schedule a personal consultation with an expert librarian, who can give you tips on how to find relevant subject databases, create individual research guides (these might already be available on the university library website for classes/general topics), and otherwise level you up to Shockingly Competent Research Superhero. So if you're still looking for a few extra sources, or for someone else who might be reading this and is still in the "how the heck do I find appropriate and extensive scholarly literature for my thesis??" stage, please. Go become a Research Ninja. It's much easier when you have a minion doing half the work for you, but please do appreciate and make use of your university librarian. It's much more effective than haphazard Google Scholar or JSTOR searches hoping to turn up something vaguely relevant (though to be fair, we all do that too), and it's what your tuition dollars are paying for.
Next, please do remind yourself that you are not writing the whole thesis in one go, and to break it down into manageable chunks. It usually does make sense to write the whole thing semi-chronologically (i.e. introduction, lit review, chapter 1, chapter 2/3/4 etc, conclusion), because that allows you to develop your thoughts and make logical connections, and to build on one piece to develop the next. If you're constantly scrambling between chapters and zig-zagging back and forth as things occur to you, it will be harder to focus on any one thought or thread of research, and while you might get more raw output, it will not be as good and will require more correction and revision, so you're not actually hacking yourself into increased productivity. You should also internally structure your chapters in addition to organizing your overall thesis, so it makes sense to draw up a rough outline for section A, section B, section C within the body of a single chapter. This will make you think about why the segues are going in that order and what a reasonably intelligent reader, who nonetheless may not have the specialized knowledge that you are demonstrating for them, needs to move understandably from one section to the next.
Some academics I know like to do an extensive outline, dumping all their material into separate documents for each chapter/paper and kneading and massaging and poking it into a more refined shape, and if that works for you -- great! I'm more of the type that doesn't bother with a ton of secondary outlines or non-writing activity, since that can lead you away from actually writing, but if you need to see the fruit of your research all together in one place before you can start thinking about how it goes together, that is also absolutely the way that some people do it. Either way, to be a successful academic writer, you have to train yourself to approach academic writing in a very different way from fun writing. You do fun writing when you have free time and feel inspired and can glop a lot of words down at once, or at least some words. You do it electively and for distraction and when you want to, not to a set timeline or schedule, and alas, you can't do this for academic writing. You will have to sit your ass down and write even when you do not feel like writing, do not feel Magically Inspired, don't even want to look at the fucking thing, etc. I have had enough practice that I can turn on Academic Writing Brain, sit down, bang something out, sit down the next day and turn on Academic Editing Brain, go over it again, and send it off, but I have been in academia for uh, quite a while. The good news is that you can also automate yourself to be the same way, but the bad news is that it will take practice and genuine time invested in it.
As such, this means developing a writing schedule and sticking to it, and figuring out whether you work best going for several hours without an interruption, or if you set a timer, write for a certain time, then allow yourself to look at the internet/answer texts/fuck around on Tumblr, and then make yourself put down the distraction and go back to work for another set period of time. (I am admittedly horrible at putting my phone away when I should be doing something else, but learn ye from your wizened elders, etc.) You will have to figure out in which physical space you work best, which may not be a public coffee shop where you can likewise get distracted with doing other things/chatting to friends/screwing around on the internet/doomscrolling/peeking at AO3, and to try to be there as often as possible. It might be your carrel in the library, it might be your desk at home, it might be somewhere else on campus, but if you can place yourself in a setting that tells your brain it's time to work and not look at WhatsApp for the 1000th time in a row, that is also beneficial.
Finally, remember that you do not have to produce an absolutely world-beating, stunningly original, totally flawless and perfect piece, even in its final form. Lots of us write very shitty things when we're starting out (and some of us, uh, still write very shitty things as established academics), and you do not have to totally redefine your entire field of study or propose a groundbreaking theory that nobody has heard of or anything like that. A lot of academic work is small-scale and nuanced, filling in spaces on the margins of other things or responding or offering a new perspective on existing work, and it's best to think of it as a conversation between yourself and other scholars. They have said something and now you're saying something back. You don't need to be so brilliant that everyone goes ZOMGZ I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THAT BEFORE; by its nature that happens very rarely and is usually way out on a limb (extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, etc); you just need to continue the dialogue with a reasonably well-constructed and internally plausible piece. So if you think of it that way, and understand that a shitty first draft will usually develop into something that is good and valuable but not SHOCKING NEW REVELATION clickbait hype, you will take some of the pressure off yourself and be more able to shut up that perfectionist voice in your head. However, all of us have some degree of imposter syndrome and it never entirely goes away, so you'll have to manage that too. Etc etc as before, it doesn't vanish altogether, but it gets easier.
And last but not least, though I'm sure I don't have to say this: for the love of fuckin' god, do not use ChatGPT. Even the genuinely shittiest paper in the world that you still worked on researching, organizing, and writing with your own brain is better than that. Trust me.

Some dumb sims 3 updates/stuf
Or, how to develop severe brain damage in 10 easy steps.
Tumblr media
Sooo… This is going to be more of a blog post than anything of any real substance, more of a whinge with maybe a few teasers for some stuff I may or may not release (probably not). Feel free to skip if you're after hot tips or coherent writing.
Stutter "fixer"
Sooooo…. The sims 3 has some stutter issueeesss… Incredible discovery, I know! I started looking at remedying them with settings, found some hidden settings that help reduce some of the issues but that can only do so much when the game was made in 2009 for 2009 computers.
So I had a looky at some things I thought could be causing it, mainly WinAPI functions because that's the easier route (h-haha…), and started to try to "optimize" some of the more common ones:
ReadFile: Was the first, and looking at the sheer volume of like 12783972198 calls a milisecond every time you move the camera, I thought surely I can speed it up a little r-right. Not really. I tried all sorts of… interesting things, file caching in memory, implementing the overlapped flag (took ages), etc. Oh and the performance increase? Literally nothing. It's called weirdly from wherever it's called and so we must suffer.
Threads: So, I had a look at other areas that were potential targets for speedup, ran an actual profile and it showed a problem areas namely threads and some other stuff I don't remember. ZwWaitForMultipleObjects and WaitForSingleObject take up a lot of time, so I very poorly attempted to optimize them, adding some timeout optimizations (and a bunch of other failed attempts). Despite being the most insane, this actually worked, and I got like a 40% speed increase in a very very niche metric that did not noticeably effect the game one single bit. I plan to combine all my failures into a single script eventually, maybe once combined they'll do something…
Actual insanity - Memory IPC: Then I had an idea, everyone hates e12, why don't we shove the games memory into another process and that'll fix it. No brain moment. No clue what past me was thinking, for some reason I thought you could like, access another processes memory if it was spawned from it, but uhh.. no, that's not how things work… I tried a few other things in a similar vein but it just crashed and crashed, so for now I'm just gunna work on:
Alloc/free mee - Current insanity: Currently, I'm still working on VirtualAlloc and VirtualFree (which is what I was redirecting to another process), but more from an optimizing memory usage standpoint than a… whatever the IPC thing was. There's a lot of things to try, and I've had some luck in some areas and some abysmal failures in others. There's a few promising functions calling VirtualAlloc/Free that seem to be potentially pointing towards memory leaks (004e54d0), but I'm too dumb to investigate that. At the moment, I'm going mostly just gathering more logs which takes forever and hurts my brain real bad.. On testing there's like 180 allocs that we could probably yeet no problem, which is like 750mb saved… Maybe idk.
I have plenty of ideas for deduplication, memory pool implementations to reduce churn/fragmentation, shoving things aggressively into pagefiles if they're not being used, etc. etc. Basically, there's a lot of avenues to explore, and I feel like there's potential… though I've definitely said that before and been dead wrong so…
Tumblr media
Anyway, rambling over. I plan to release a dumb little renderer settings mod maybe-soon-ish that'll let you do dumb stuff that might be useful for reshade like turn shadows/drop shadows off and post processing off and on. I guess I could add max lots and other settings eventually too since they're static values.... Might also do a mythbusting post for some performance "tweak" stuff I see thrown around that isn't super accurate but I also don't want people to be angry at me so maybe not.
Sorry to whoever read all this, but also thanks :)

Was experimenting with halftone effects after watching this video and it almost has spiderverse vibes honestly. I actually learned some neat things about why printers use CMYK instead of just CMY so I thought I'd share !!
So in our optimal little computer space, Cyan (0,255,255), Magenta (255,0,255) and Yellow (255,255,0) all multiplied together gives us a perfect black (0,0,0) Awesome! The issue is that ink colors irl arent exactly perfect like this, and color is a bit more complicated irl compared to how computers represent it, so they aren't the greatest at combining into black if they aren't those perfect CMY values:
Left: CMY
Right: CMYK
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(thats not even black, its a dark blue in the original image but dark colors just look so much richer)
An important step to make sure you arent doubling up on the black values though is to divide the image by it's own "value" (the max of all 3 color channels) that way the value is equal to 1 everywhere, and you're letting the black ink take care of the value on its own.
Left: CMY (normalized value)
Middle: K (black)
Right: Combined
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now obviously the grids of dots cant be aligned perfectly with each other because you'd just get a bunch of black dots in unwanted areas, but if the grids are misaligned, then some dots become more prominent than others which tints the whole image. This was an issue because older printing methods didn't have great accuracy and these grids were often misaligned.
Tumblr media
The solution was to rotate these grids such that they can move around freely while getting rid of that tint effect if they aren't perfectly aligned :D
(I have no idea how they came up with these angles but that might be something to look into in the future who knows)
Tumblr media
SPEAKING OF MISALIGNMENT
I wanted to implement that in my own filter to get some cool effects, and I discovered another reason CMYK is better than CMY for lots of stuff !!
With CMY, you're relying on the combination of 3 color channels to make the color black. This means if you have thin lines or just details in general, misalignment can make those details very fuzzy. Since CMYK uses a single color of ink to handle value, it reduces color fringing and improves clarity a lot even if you have the exact same misalignment as CMY!
Left: CMY
Right: You guessed it! CMYK
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(yes these comparisons have the exact same color misalignment, the only difference is using a fourth ink color for black)
ANYWAY I just thought there was a lot of cool information in this tiny little day project, I also just think it looks really neat and wanted to share what I learned :3c
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
EDITING BECAUSE THERE'S ONE MORE THING I WANTED TO ADD
So, I talked about how to get K in addition to CMY instead of just CMY, but how exactly do you separate CMY from an image in the first place?
Well, CMY is a subtractive color space, meaning the "absence of color" is white, compared to RGB where it's black. This makes sense because ofc ink is printed on white paper. You can use dot product to get the "similarity" between two vectors, and this can be used to separate RGB actually! Using the dot product of a color and red (255,0,0) will give you just the red values of the image. This is cool though because if we get the dot product of our image and the color cyan (0,255,255), we can get the cyan values from our image too! If we first divide our colors by their value to separate the value from them, then separate CMY using those dot product values, and using K for our final black color value, our individual color passes end up looking like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While it's called a "subtractive" color space, I find it more intuitive to treat white as the absence of color here, and then multiply all these passes together. It makes it much easier to understand how the colors are combined imo. Notice how cyan is the opposite of red: (255,0,0) vs (0,255,255) and magenta and yellow are the opposites of green and blue respectively! This means you can actually kinda get away with separating the RGB values and just inverting some stuff to optimize this, but this example is much more intuitive and readable so I won't go too deep into that. THANKS FOR READING I know it's a very long post but I hope people find it interesting! I try my best to explain things in a clear and concise way :3
Tumblr media
oh thank you I realized I should probably add an eyestrain tag

Do you have any tips for navigating ADHD? I don’t really know anything about it and was wondering if you possibly know any coping (?) skills for it ;-;
(I know I shouldn’t ask tumblr but might as well give it a shot)
Ouu IDK how much help I can offer because I am still VERY bad at navigating my ADHD some (most) days, but ! I'll do my best to list out some tips that have helped me, all of which you can implement with or without meds (though medication can absolutely make it easier to implement these tips, medication unfortunately isn't available to everyone , and those who are medicated can undoubtedly attest that they're unfortunately not a miracle fix-all drug, you still gotta do a lot of the work yourself sigh)
Put your phone further away from your bed so that in the morning you'll have to physically get out of bed to turn off your alarm (and at night you won't doomscroll before bed!) You do still have to force yourself to stay out of bed, but having some kind of morning routine can help you do that (putting on your slippers, making coffee, brushing your teeth, washing your face, etc etc.)
Break tasks down into smaller steps! So if you have a chore like "do the dishes", break it down into steps like "clean bowls" "clean spoons" etc. This will help it feel more manageable by allowing you to focus on individual aspects of the chore, more achievable because each step is a lot smaller, and more rewarding because you can identify progress in smaller, more tangible amounts.
If you struggle with hydrating, get some sugar-free fruit flavor packs for water. Turning water into sugar-free juice doesn't make it any less water! (and this logic can be applied to other food aversions - need to eat vegetables but hate eating them? Melt cheese on top of them or mix 'em into something you like! The nutrition is still there even if you have to disguise 'em.
Head full of tangled up thoughts? Write them down wherever you can. Can be in paragraph form, lists, etc. and it doesn't matter if you're writing in a physical journal or just in a Notepad file. The act of writing your thoughts down can help them feel less overwhelming and trapped inside your own head.
Don't put it down, put it away.
Just because you start a task doesn't mean you have to finish it all at once. Dishes piling up in the sink? Laundry needs to be done? Pick one thing you can do to progress that task and focus on that one thing, like cleaning a single cup or putting your socks in the hamper. Often times this can even trick your brain into motivating itself to complete the chore, because you've already started it so you may as well finish it. And if you can't, well, you still made more progress than not starting it at all!
When you get home, keep your shoes on if you can (or if you don't wanna track dirt and mud inside, switch to a pair of shoes that are clean). I find getting necessary chores done is easier when you're still dressed, get into your comfy clothes *after* they're finished.
Pick the path of least resistance, not the path you think will "overcome" your ADHD in ways you think will be acceptable to others. It's a disorder, you can't force your brain to operate like how you think a neurotypical person's brain works. If something isn't working for you, then find ways to achieve the goal in ways that will, even if it seems "silly". For me this looks like doing as many dishes as I can before my dinner is finished cooking (because I need clean dishes to eat anyways and I need *something* to pass the time while I wait lmao), or using Spongebob toothpaste because it tastes better than Colgate (I hate mint, bleh), or streaming when I need to get work done because it'll force me to focus for an audience. The goal is still achieved, even if it's not the way a neurotypical person might do it.
Be wary of apps and products that promise to "fix your ADHD". These are grandiose promises that can't actually achieve such a thing, as ADHD is a complex disorder that affects people in many different ways and is, again, a disorder. That said, there are apps that can be very helpful, but don't explicitly market themselves as fix-all's to ADHD. The apps I like to use most for managing my tasks and scattered thoughts are Obsidian, ToDoIst, Pomofocus, and Finch. Other than those, I just use Google Calendar for my scheduling because it can be integrated with other apps (and I can use it from both my desktop and phone), and if I'm away from my phone, I'll just scribble things onto note paper or whatever's accessible (like receipt paper when I'm at work lmao)
Be patient and kind with yourself. If being hard on yourself was the solution, it would have worked by now. Seriously, this one's hard to remember because a lot of people with ADHD (myself included) often feel a lot of shame towards themselves for not being able to "just do the thing", but ADHD is an executive functioning disorder, as well as a dopamine regulation disorder. Just like how you wouldn't shame someone in a wheelchair for not being able to use stairs, you shouldn't shame yourself for not being able to do things the "conventional" way, especially when those conventions were created by neurotypicals who don't live with the same hurdles we do. Celebrate all the small wins you can, forgive yourself when you fail, and look for any accommodations where you can find them, even if those accommodations are non-conforming.
Have a body double. This can be someone who's physically near you or even just an accountability buddy who you chat with and share progress with online. For example, Banshriek is not just my assistant, but someone who subconsciously helps keep me at least somewhat on track with Rekindled (even when I'm late on updates, I do still fail at keeping on track lmao) because now I have another person on the project who's both helping me finish new episodes but also wants to progress the story and release new episodes to y'all just as much as I do!
Set up blocks of time for specific things. When you wake up, open a Notepad file or even just write down on a scrap piece of paper what you wanna get done that day, and give it specific times to do those things. Oftentimes creating a list of just vague things to accomplish can do more harm than good, because it just winds up weighing down on us and we don't have any sort of realistic roadmap or sense of how long these tasks should take (and that can result in creating unrealistic expectations to build Rome in a day lmao). Adding in timeframes for each task helps you rationalize how much time you actually have to spend in a day, and prevents you from spending too much time on any one thing if you're at risk of doing so. For example, if I lay out my own day, I might write out something like "1 PM - 4 PM: Tattoo appointment" "5 PM - 6:30 PM: Dinner" "7 PM - 10 PM: Rekindled Page 2 flats" "11 PM - 12:30 AM: Video game break" "1 AM - 2:30 AM: Rekindled Page 2 flats and/or shading", etc. I keep the timeframes wide enough to allow for some overflow in case I underestimate how much time I really needed (but also, this means sometimes I overestimate it too, which gives me more time in the day to progress on to the next thing by getting the task done sooner than I expected!)
I have no miracle tips for this because it's still my biggest problem BUT - get more sleep. Seriously. I know our time blindness compels us to stay awake as long as we can to finish all the things we put off throughout the day, and because going to bed means "tomorrow" will happen and we'll have to go through all those unbearable routines to "get our day started" and all that junk, but for the love of god, get more sleep. You don't have to suddenly go to bed at 8 PM like some kind of old person, but try and go to bed even just a half hour earlier for the next few days. And then when you get used to that, go to bed a half hour earlier than that. Small changes create bigger and more consistent results. I know you really want to stay up to do whatever it is you're doing, but you and I both know that 5 hours of sleep each night isn't sustainable and it's not making you feel good because it's just creating that negative feedback loop of wishing you had gone to bed earlier and wishing you had gotten out of bed earlier and wishing you weren't so lethargic all the time and wishing you could have your mornings and afternoons back. Even medication doesn't magically fix this problem, you really do just gotta try and go to bed a little bit earlier, one night at a time.
Not a tip but a resource, How to ADHD is one of my favorite ADHD-related Youtube channels of all time, they do a great job at analyzing the unique struggles of ADHD and offering unique and ADHD-tailored solutions, like getting past the Wall of Awful or tackling the ADHD Tax.
Phew, that was a lot of tips! But I hope they help you or anyone else reading this. Ultimately how I navigate my life and symptoms are gonna vary from how you navigate yours, and I know that a LOT of these tips sound like the same tired bullshit a lot of neurotypicals tell us, but the reason why it's tired bullshit is because NT's tell us to do these things as if they're common sense and easy, but they're not for someone with ADHD. They are still helpful and in some cases necessary, but it's about learning how to approach them with an ADHD brain rather than trying to conform to them from the point of view of a neurotypical. It's not as easy as "just drink more water" and "get more sleep", but we can create our own ways of achieving these goals, whether it's adding raspberry flavor to our water or saving our favorite non-electronic hobbies (like knitting, playing instruments, etc.) for wind-down time before bed.
Sooo yeah! I hope that helps! It's currently 12:30 AM here so I'm gonna go work on Rekindled for another hour and a half or so, and then wind down for bed with some gaming uwu (I'm gonna try to get to bed by 4:00 AM tonight, I promise! I said it out loud here so now I'll do it for real >:0)

Just One Date
Summary: You're a Military Doctor attached to the 212, and you've come to consider Commander Cody as a friend. Turns out, that he sees you a little bit more.
Pairing: Commander Cody x F!Reader
Word Count: 1333
Warnings: Cody makes suggestive jokes, and gets whacked with pillows and has a hand slapped over his mouth for it.
Tagging: @trixie2023 @n0vqni
A/N: HAPPY 2224 Day! I came up with this idea at 5:30 this morning when I originally woke up and when I remembered what today was. There might, possibly, be a sequel where the date actually happens. It depends on people's reactions to this one.
Tumblr media
You’ve been a civilian employee to the GAR since you were old enough to enlist. The military wasn’t exactly your “dream” career, but it got you away from your incredibly toxic family, and it paid you to go to medical school.
And, really, at the time the odds of there actually being a war was slim to non-existent.
Jokes on you, the war started 6 months after you graduated and you found yourself bouncing from military base to military base, before finally getting assigned to The Negotiator, under General Obi-Wan Kenobi and Commander Cody.
The Commander is everything you’ve ever wanted in a Senior Officer, respectful and professional when the situation calls for it, but more than happy to share jokes with you when you’re not working.
The General, however, is a walking migraine.
At this point, you’re beginning to think that your job would be easier if you were assigned to literally any other battalion.
“General Kenobi,” You say as you pinch the bridge of your nose, “Did you, perhaps, skip your basic first aid lessons as a child?”
Helix, working on Commander Cody at the bed behind you, doesn’t bother to muffle his laughter, but you tune him out with the ease of long practice, instead pinning your General with an accusing glare.
“Well,” General Kenobi rubs his chin thoughtfully, “I was a very busy padawan-”
“So, perhaps, you skipped the basic first aid classes that say when you get stabbed, do not remove the stabbing implement?” You interrupt.
“Well, I wouldn’t say that I skipped the lessons-” He demures.
“And your reasoning for ignoring Commander Cody’s very reasonable order to not remove the knife from your thigh?” You ask.
“...uh…I was in shock?”
You smile. It’s a nice smile, and you’re pleased to see General Kenobi slump on the hospital bed, “Well, since you ignored your Commanders very reasonable, and correct, order. You’re going to spend the next three days in a bacta tank.”
“I don’t think you’re allowed to use bacta tanks as a punishment.” General Kenobi says thoughtfully.
“I don’t think you’re in any position to argue with me.” You counter with a roll of your eyes. “Relax, General. It’s not a punishment. You’re more injured than you look. And maybe you can get some sleep if I drug you enough.”
General Kenobi sputters, “Commander! Are you hearing this?”
“Hm? What? I’m not listening.” Cody says with a sly smirk.
“Well, there you have it. The Commander’s on my side.” You say brightly, as you spin to grab a syringe of the sedative that was especially formulated for Jedi. “Good night, General.”
“This is mutiny,” General Kenobi says with a frown.
“Yes, yes. I know.” You inject the liquid into his IV, “We’ll see you in a couple of days.” The older man slowly drifts off to sleep, and you pass the General over to the men who can get him into a bacta tank easier than you.
And then you spin on your heel and move over to Commander Cody, who’s laying on his hospital bed very peacefully, a small grin playing on his lips. “What’s wrong with you?” You ask, as you grab his file and scan it.
“Well, I was blown up, mesh’la.” Commander Cody says blandly.
“Well, that was silly of you. Why would you do something like that?”
“I woke up this morning and thought, ‘how can I make my medics pull their hair out today?’ and decided that getting blown up was the best way to go about it.”
You smother your laugh and glance at him, “One of these days Helix is actually going to kill you.”
“But you’ll protect me won’t you?”
“Of course.” You wink at him, “Everyone knows I’m the scary one.” You scan his record for a moment, and then favor him with a smile, “Aside from some bumps and bruises, you look totally fine.”
He grins at you, “So you like how I look, do you?”
You sigh, “Commander, that joke got old within a week of working with any of you.”
Cody just laughs and sits up, “Come on, Doc. I won’t tell. We both know that I’m the most handsome.”
“One of these days,” You counter as you set your hands on your hips, “I’m going to buy a box of chocolates and address it to ‘the most handsome man in the 212’ just to see who wins.”
“Aww, mesh’la, you don’t have to buy me chocolates.”
“Ooh, someone’s cocky.”
“You have no idea.” He flashes a boyish grin, “I could show you, if you like.”
You squint at him, “What?”
“Just how cocky I am.” Cody clarifies with a sly grin.
Your jaw drops and your face burns, before you grab the thin pillow and smack him with it, “Behave!”
Cody laughs, as he fends off the pillow, “What? I just repeated what you said. It’s not my fault that your brain lives in the gutter.”
“Rude. Rude!” You huff, “I changed my mind, I’m not going to protect you from Helix. RIP Commander Cody. I knew you well.”
“C’mon mesh’la,” He teases, “Having a dirty mind is a boon. Well, I think. Especially if it’s dirty about me.” Cody reaches out and lightly grips your hips, tugging you closer.
You scowl at him, though it’s really more of a pout, “You know, there are almost 2 million men identical to you-”
“Yeah, yeah. But you don’t have dirty thoughts about them.” Cody replies confidently.
“You’re so sure of that?”
“Yup.”
You shake your head, “Come on, Commander. You’re hardly a mind-reader.”
“I don’t have to be. I see how you look at me.” He says with a smirk.
“And how do I look at you?” You ask sarcastically.
Cody’s smirk grows into an amused grin, “Like you wanna drag me into a supply closet and ri-” You slam your hands over his mouth.
“Okay! Thank you!” You yelp, your face burning. “Why do people think you’re the mature one?” You bemoan.
“Because I play the part well,” He says smugly, his voice muffled by your hand.
“Can I remove my hand or are you still going to try and embarrass me?” You ask.
“I like it when you get all embarrassed, it’s cute.” Cody replies before he pulls your hands away from his mouth, and then presses them to the bed next to him without releasing them.
“Hm, you seem to have forgotten to release my hands.” You say dryly.
“I didn’t forget. I did it on purpose.” He says, his dark eyes scanning your face.
“And why would you do that?”
“Go on a date with me.” Cody says.
You blink at him, startled. “I beg your pardon?”
“One date,” He clarifies, “That’s all I’m asking for.”
“Commander-”
“Cody.” He interrupts, his gaze serious, “One night. Let me show you how good we could be together.”
You avert your gaze for a second, and you know that he can feel your heart racing with how he’s holding your hands still. “Commander, we’re not going to be returning to Coruscant for several months-”
“Cody, and I don’t care. I can woo you even on the Negotiator. Give me a chance.”
“And if we don’t go well together at the end of the night? What then?”
“We’re going to be great,” Cody counters, “But, if,” He rolls his eyes, “For some reason, we don’t work out, then nothing will change.”
“Com-”
He tugs your wrists so that you topple against him, “Cody. My name isn’t that hard, is it?”
“...Cody.” You finally say with a sigh, though there’s a small smile playing on your lips, “I suppose, since you’re so eager, I can agree to a single night.”
“There's going to be more than one.” Cody says confidently.
You hum thoughtfully, “Prove it.”
He grins at you boyishly, “I can do that. I already have the whole thing planned.”
“...How?” You ask, exasperated.
“I’m very good at what I do.” He replies smugly.

Note
were you expecting the fact that the swap to Twine would apparently come with a hike in the perceived difficulty of the game (even if the actual stat checks stayed the same) It just feels harder now, and thats really interesting to me
I both expected and didn't expect, for different reasons! Here's the breakdown of my thought process:
Stat checks and requirements stayed the same. Ergo, difficulty should not inherently change.
We switched from fairmath to straight numbers. (In actuality, this change took place a few years ago, at least in the ChoiceScript alpha version.) So instead of doing things in percentages, it's now just +1 or +2 or +3 intelligence.
This change theoretically makes the game far easier in some senses, at least overall. In fairmath, stat increases are extremely generous the farther away you are from 100, but become minimal or nonexistent the stronger you become. So people could be racking up 3% increases to Trouble's relationship or to Silver Tongue with every single response, but if they were already at a high value in these stats, they might not actually be seeing any changes at all, because the percentages were too small to change anything! By the time people got to Chapter 7, they'd be training in magic on their days off and would be "wasting" that time because they'd see, like, a +1 increase instead of a steady, consistent number like +10 across the board each time. This was particularly noticeable in companion relationships, because you could choose to spend time with Blade at 90%, and for the whole interlude, your relationship might not change at all (because a choice would have to give you +10% to Blade to net you even a single point, if your relationship was already at 90%)! This also played hell on playtesting in general, because a Blademancer could be noticing this difficulty while someone who made different choices and had a more neutral relationship to Blade wouldn't notice or report it at all.
Therefore, making the stat increases straight integers should make hitting the unchanged stat checks and requirements much easier, more predictable, and more straightforward. In fact, I had to implement some caps in order to prevent people from getting like 55 Nerves of Steel from the Prologue alone, lol.
Caveat #1: I wasn't aware of a bug in the previous alpha version that allowed people to train in magic or physique twice on one day off. This led to a phenomenon that I'm always wary of when dealing with the alpha build: in implementing too many cheats, shortcuts, or easy ways to achieve certain paths for the sake of playtesting or bug hunting--methods which aren't supposed to be in the final version of the game--people may become used to certain alpha-only gameplay experiences and will find the final product more difficult than they remembered. Confusion then ensues. In the case of this double-magic-training, that was an unintentional bug and not something I deliberately implemented (that I remember), but it essentially led to the same scenario, where people were effectively doubling their magic from the get-go in the old version and can't now. I think this is largely why the Twine build feels more "difficult."
Caveat #2: The Twine build also probably feels more difficult because code-diving is less transparent and straightforward. Also, new things always have a different feel, which I think contributes to the perceived difficulty!
Caveat #3: In switching to straight integers instead of fairmath, which favors players in the beginning and increases difficulty at the end, the beginning of the game may then feel harder for people who are used to the old way. This should really only apply to people who played the public demo, since again, we wiped out fairmath from the alpha build in--2022? But it's still a consideration. I consider Shepherds of Haven an interesting maverick when it comes to this, as for story reasons, it actually makes the most sense for MC to face more difficulty in the beginning of the game, because they haven't been able to use their magic openly for essentially their entire lives and have been stymied and limited by the Autarchy's laws. The more they settle into being a Shepherd, the more their power and experience exponentially increases, and they start to get a taste of how easy things would have been for them if they'd been allowed to develop their abilities freely from a young age. This is part of the tragedy of the state of their world at the current moment and an intended part and feeling of the plot. Someone who was allowed to swim every day after school, get a membership to a diving gym, compete openly in swimming tournaments and marathons, and take summer vacations to the sea is going to fare far better in even a casual race than someone who either had to secretly learn about swimming through reading stolen books about it, had a non-athlete tutor who could only teach them secretly in a backyard pond, or even attended a secret swimming school in a decommissioned high school auditorium where getting caught swimming meant getting shot for trespassing. Also, they have to face the Faceless Lords right away--canonically some of the strong demons in existence--so it is intended for fledgling MC to find the beginning phase of their Shepherd journey to be rather difficult and trying rather than forgiving. The Words are there to ease that experience--they are the game's "Get out of Jail" card--but I do acknowledge it's an unconventional, inverse experience for players who are used to the beginning part of games going from easy -> difficult rather than the other way around!
Hope that all makes sense!

ATTENTION ALL PERSONNEL!
Tumblr media
ATTENTION ALL PERSONNEL! The M*A*S*H fanfiction community has been approved! actually it was approved two weeks ago but i was on vacation
This community is open to any and all fans of M*A*S*H fic. Whether you're a writer, a reader, or a total newbie, this space is for you! You can talk about fics you've loved, ask for advice about a sticky plot point in your latest WIP, ask for recommendations for a ship you like, share an AO3 link to your latest fic, or share snippets from your work; the world is your oyster!
>> LINK <<
(As of 6.21.2024, communities don't let you generate an invite link yet, so just like/reply to this post if you want an invitation! This post will be updated with a proper invitation link once that feature is implemented.)
RULES (May be subject to change, but probably not that much change, lol.)
Be nice. Duh. Any bigotry or unkind behavior will not be tolerated. Welcome everyone with open arms and open hearts, and be ready to make new connections.
18+ only. Go nuts. Show nuts. Whatever.
No gory or sexually explicit images. Most of these go against tumblr's TOS, and we don't want the community to get deleted.
Keep things on topic. We're joining this community to talk about fic, so let's make sure we keep our posts fic-related! General discussions about M*A*S*H are fun, but not what this community is intended for.
If you don't like something, scroll past. We all like different things, and that's what makes the world interesting. If someone shares a fic that isn't to your tastes, you don't have to read it. Leaving a rude comment on anybody's post will get you kicked. (If you're concerned that somebody is posting bigoted or hateful material, let me know, but I honestly don't anticipate this being an issue at this time.)
Use read mores for long posts or NSFW material. This makes navigating the dash easier, and helps prevent people from getting jumpscared by lovingly detailed descriptions of oral sex on the subway, something that has of course never happened to me.
Tagging or using content notes for your writing is encouraged. This is the best way to find your audience. People who aren't interested in a particular subject can skip over, and you'll also be able to draw in the people who are enthusiastically interested! If you think a particular topic might be especially sensitive, a read more is never a bad idea.
Only give concrit (constructive criticism) when asked. This is a somewhat contentious topic in fandom as a whole, so we're keeping it simple and asking that members don't give criticism on fic posts unless the author specifically requests it.
And one final note:
Small groups and communities can easily become cliquish. Few things feel worse than joining a group, hoping to find like-minded people, only to find yourself surrounded by what feels like an impenetrable friend group with no interest in talking to you. Nobody wants to feel alone in a crowd.
So when you join this group, don't just talk to people you already know. That defeats the point of joining this kind of community, anyway! Make an effort to talk to someone new. Leave a gushing comment about a stranger's fic excerpt. Tag someone who you think has a really cool interpretation of a character you like. Reply to a post that hasn't gotten any attention. Include people who seem a little shy. Be open and friendly and welcoming.

As briefly explored in this post, Vi's "enforcer arc" could've gone plenty of different ways- including not at all. This actually gave me another idea, though it kind of takes some fiddling and setup.
Basing a bit of this idea once more off of @srslylini proposing the possibility of Vi becoming some kind of important figure in Zaun, I think it'd be interesting to see Vi becoming something Piltover sees as an "enforcer", but for Zaun instead. This is somewhat related to this post, though it doesn't necessarily have to be to work.
Basically, if Zaun is trying to become independent, just demanding it isn't going to work, as seen in the entirety of the show. They'd need some serious stuff up their sleeves.
Obviously they have Jinx, and even Ekko, but as established in my previous post delving into the revolution-arc-that-wasn't, Jinx really isn't the activist type. And also, strong and smart as she is, there's only one of her. She'd need assistance, even if she DID have a change of heart. (This could lead into Vi and Jinx's slow reconciliation as sisters, as well as tie into season 1's themes about cycles and their fathers and how they can't achieve anything if they don't work together, etc. But I've already discussed this in the previous post.)
In a version of Arcane in which Zaun is politically fractured instead of the relative monolith it gets presented as, Vi, as probably Vander's most recognizable child, might receive some level of (unasked for) political support from people who essentially want a new Vander. Jinx and Ekko (and possibly Sevika) might also have factions of varying sizes as well.
The thing is, they're all being supported for different reasons. Jinx's main followers are seen as "blue haired radicals" (lol) who want war, Sevika's as people who want familiarity/think she can control the Chem-Barons or Jinx, Ekko's as people who're probably tired of fighting and just want peace/are hoping he has better solutions than shimmer and gangs, etc., and Vi, as I said, has people who want another Vander, who want the relative security and quiet of that era back. In other words, they each mean something different to people. And in order to make their reluctant alliance work, they'll each have to embody this "persona"/symbolism to some extent, at least to the public.
So maybe, in line with the perception of her being the "new Vander", the next "Hound of the Underground", Vi (possibly with new gauntlets, courtesy of Jinx - shoutout @blog-i-hate-friday) takes on a "protector" type image for Zaun? Jinx is the rage/spirit of rebellion, Ekko (and his cool ass tree) is the hope, Sevika's the brains that runs their messy operation, and Vi is the defender. To Piltover, they're seen as Zaun's "council". Overdramatized stories of them repaints their stations in ways the Piltovans deem more "palatable" and "civilized", with Vi as their "chief enforcer", as she and her crew are in charge of keeping actual Piltovan enforcers off of Zaun's soil and generally protecting their fellow Zaunites. Jinx spends more time making gadgets than she does blowing stuff up, but the mark she left on Piltover makes the image of the "loose canon" impossible to shake. Ekko is more worried about implementing water filtration systems or running the Firelights- who often patrol with Vi's people- to be "terrorizing" Piltover, but they still think the Firelights were responsible for Progress Day. Perhaps he becomes, in their eyes, something of a cult leader (after all, they call him the Boy Savior, he who inspires so much hope- this must be for a reason, right?). Sevika is nothing like Silco- but it makes it easier for the Piltovans to pretend she is, than to accept that a wine aunt and her team of traumatized barely-adults are running circles around them.
Eventually, in some possible future in which Zaun's demands are finally accepted- that is how Piltover will address them, aligning with their League Champion titles (though they do not have the guts to refer to Jinx as the Loose Canon to her or her allies' faces).

I really enjoy how despite being a separated au (especially one where 25% of the turtles are chronically lonely and the other 75% are genocidal) it's way more silly than it is angsty. I really enjoy how you capture the spirit and essence of Rise itself.
That being said, is there a part of the au that you find particularly angsty, or is it all shenanigans and fluff in your mind?
LMAO yeah as much as I like angst, I usually tend to default to making things silly goofy, I dunno why but I find it way easier to do when it comes to my storystelling.
That being said, I've been saving up most of the angst for the movie events. I'm not sure how dark I'll make it, compared to some stories I've seen in this fandom it'll be far from the angstiest stuff. Actually it might have a similar tone to the actual movie lol. The moment where Donnie shields Mikey from the Krang's attack is angstier mostly becuase I decided to make it more graphic than in canon........ Also uh ya'll remember that anon that brought up the possibility of that being the scene where Donnie loses his arm? Initially I didn't plan using that concept but like... man I haven't been able to stop thinking about that I honestly might implement it in the story 😭 Both Donnie and Mikey are absolutely going through it during the invasion, Mikey being trapped in the Prison Dimension is obviously not gonna be very silly happy times either. If I ever get around to showing the events of the bad future timeline then that's also gonna be angstier.
Aside from that though, it's still gonna stay mostly lighthearted. Again, I love angst but I always feel kinda kinda awkward creating more serious and darker stories myself? I do also very much enjoy creating more comedic stories, which is also a big reason why I'm doing it for the AU.

Nezu is way too suspicious.
His Quirk allows him to cause chain reactions, a fact explicitly stated by Midnight, who also made sure to remind us that he holds a grudge against humans. We don’t know the full extent of his abilities, but we do know that his foresight is extensive—so much so that he planned specific routes for Kaminari and Mina to take during a crisis. That suggests his influence is incredibly far-reaching.
And Midnight? The only UA staff member who isn’t around anymore. Suspicious.
Now, let’s talk about Nezu’s involvement in key events:
1. The USJ Attack
• He’s one of the few who knew about AM’s Quirk, its limitations, and how little time he had left.
• Nezu deliberately held up All Might, making him even later to the attack than he was already going to be.
• If Nezu wasn’t directly involved in setting up the attack, he at the very least played a role in ensuring AM wouldn’t be there in time to prevent it.
2. The Successor Plot
• Nezu was part of the selection process for AM’s successor, encouraging him to choose a UA student before Deku even entered the picture.
• He personally voted for Deku’s acceptance into the Hero Course.
• He knew Deku and Katsuki were from the same middle school, likely remembered them from the sludge incident(which was in the paper) and saw that they some of the highest scores in separate categories.
• Then, he placed them in the same class and observed their very complicated relationship firsthand.
3. The Sports Festival & Its Consequences
• He allowed Katsuki to be tied up on live in an event that replaced the Olympics in popularity.
• Which directly led to him gaining the League of Villains’ interest.
• At the same time, this put Katsuki on Jeanist’s radar—setting up a future mentor-student relationship.
• All of this put even more pressure on Katsuki, forcing him to prove himself.
4. The Training Camp
• Nezu was one of the very few people who knew the camp’s secret location
Possibly even picked the location
Was in charge of many pros would be there.
Was vastly easier to kidnap Katsuki in this setting rather than the other failed attempts
AM conveniently wasn’t present.
(Frankly I think these play a big role than one student leaking the location)
5. Katsuki’s rescue and AM’s Retirement
• led directly to AM refacing AFO instead of the LOV
He then burnt out the last embers of his power, forcing him to retire.
• This intensified Katsuki’s suspicions about AM and Deku, making him dig deeper into their relationship.
• The guilt lessened Katsuki’s performance during the Provisional License Exam, which he failed—leaving him out of the work studies.
6. The Ripple Effects on Katsuki & Deku
• Because Katsuki wasn’t eligible for work studies, he missed Deku’s battle with Chisaki.
• This fight also cemented Deku’s personal investment in Eri, and reinforced his need to break rules for the sake of others.
• Deku’s actions, in turn, saved UA’s reputation by overshadowing another potential scandal.
6. The Long-Term Setup
• Jeanist was taken out of commission during Katsuki’s rescue, freeing him up for later.
• Nezu actively discouraged his staff from searching for a traitor among them.
• He finally implemented the UA dorm system, something he had been advocating for but never acted on—until now.
• He reassured AM that if nothing suspicious happened after the students moved into the dorms, then there was nothing to worry about.
7. The Final Stage: The War Arc & Beyond
• By the time of the war, Katsuki had matured emotionally and was able to fight alongside Deku for the first time in a villain attack.
• He had also become even more deeply connected to Deku, setting the stage for their intertwined fates.
8. Nezu’s Endgame?
And here’s what fucks me up the most—Nezu easily agreed to let the students ambush Endeavor and hunt Deku down.
It was never even a question whether that was in his power, Uraraka knew it would be, so it’s just common knowledge? 🤨
But how does he have the power to do that, like imagine being one of the leaders heading off a fascist uprising and your sons hs principal demands you come in and you have to because you used to go to school there???
And then UA becomes the shelter during the war, but it doesn’t come as like government mandate, it’s Nezus choice something he does as a concerned and caring individual
In the end nearly everyone who rebuilds society is a UA alumni, and Deku, the face of the war, now works there!!
So society has an intense gratitude to UA for holding them during the war, an intense admiration for producing all these heros, and there’s apparently a rule/law(?) that you are beholden to your old principles meetings even when the worlds ending 💀
Nezu owns society and he planned it!!!
