Okay, what to say:

Why IS she like this? She's so excited to fix every problem that everyone else has, but when it comes to the problems that matter to her on a more personal level, she just ignores them whenever they aren't currently clawing her face open.

There's a prompt, she has a reason, but she is quite outwardly and borderline enthusiastically neglectful towards Catra.

And Catra sucks, and just wants to hurt her, but it's almost uncanny how Adora is so capable of ignoring it. We know that she cares, we've seen the whole series, so-- What's going on here?

Well, might be as simple as a trauma response. Forget the bad, ignore the good, because it hurts to remember that, too.

Might be a period of mania or practically shock where the less she thinks about her past the better.

I don't honestly fully know. Those are the options where Adora can do them and also be an unapologetically good person anyways.

The alternatives are she's trying really hard to NOT care that she left Catra behind. And failing. That this is a new start and what happened before just doesn't matter.

But then Catra would be right about something and let's face it Catra isn't right about anything

See this is her while she'd still cheat at board games like Quacks in Quedlinburg. Later she evolves and realizes that it's more fun if you win when you did it honestly

"How does this bitch keep tying everything into board games and goth chicks it's almost never relevant"

It's always relevant and you're made of straw

Scheming's a tough job when you're scheming against someone who knows you. All it takes is a little eye contact and my girl covers her belly-button so I can't suddenly stick my finger into it

Here's Adora's problem here, right? She plays by the rules, but she's loud, brash, and RESPECTS those rules. Like some kinda loser.

The easiest way to get AROUND any rule is to LOOK like you're respecting it. That's why you can walk into just about any staff area and nobody's gonna give a shit unless you have the confidence of a closeted sardine.

If Catra followed the rules she wouldn't still be here. Again, it's a fundamental difference from how these two characters have survived up to this point. The rules were made to keep people like Adora up, and people like Catra down. Most of them were probably made EXPLICITLY for that reason, because most of the rules they grew up under were likely made by Shadow Weaver.

Here we see the base traits of our characters outlining how they will plan and behave within the scenario we've put them in.

These characters are fleshed out and VIVID enough that we are at the point where writing them becomes easier, because you don't have to DECIDE what they do, it's clear to the writer what they would do in any given moment.

That is always the goal when writing a character. Once you get to that point, it becomes WAY easier, and WAY more fun.

Here's how we're doing things, right? We're gonna go one episode at a time, and I'm gonna give my thoughts whenever they come up. This is a train of thought type beat, alright? Unlike my usual grandstanding authorial and analytical self, this re-watch is purely for the rant factor. If you don't know me, and you just happened upon this thread because you like reading she-ra rewatches, hello. I'm a writer from Canada who found she-ra in 2025 and is currently on her sixth watch through. From that, hopefully you can discern that I like this show, even if I'm likely gonna criticize parts of it. We good to go? Good. We start with S01 E01.

RIGHT, THE SWORD PART 1! A zoom in, with an angelic singing being drowned out by digital bloopy fright zone vibes, and then Adora being a fuckin dweeb as her leitmotif plays in a decidedly crystiline synth-y tone.

Now, what do we learn from this? This, aside from one gripe I'll have more to speak on later, is an excellent introduction. With the music alone we're essentially taken from the beauty of the planet, the overwhelming dread of the fright zone, and then into a hopeful tune that isn't FREE from these sort of digital themes in the music, but is very defined and separate FROM them.

This isn't gonna be one of those things where I praise literally every single fuckin thing so keep your panties on, I'm not gonna full-on overanalyzing avatar this shit, but the most important parts of a story are the beginning and the ending.

Now, when I say that, I am speaking pragmatically. Every part of every story is important-- but when it comes to what people remember, what they love, what they never shut up about-- it's the start and the end. You need to nail the take-off and the landing, people will forget the turbulence from the rest of the trip.

Now, what does THIS bitch's intro tell us about her? Well, a lot, honestly. Most of what we know about Adora at this point is she plays by the rules, but she is a notably goofy person. She's goofy, but she's unwilling to goof-OFF too much.

And while we get a taste of the rivalry they have instantly, with "That's low, even for you." "You know nothing's too low for me~"

We instantly see that that is not the CORE of their relationship.

I'd like to praise the voice direction in this show for the first of many times here. The voice actors do amazing work in this, and the direction can be felt throughout.

"Come on, you look stupid hanging there" can obviously be a seen as a strange first line to show the warmth these two share, but the inflection from Catra's voice actor, AJ Mikalcha, makes it read as downright sweet.

Also don't get used to me using names of the crew besides ND Stevenson because I'm so awful with names I was still calling Catra Katara half the time on my second re-watch and I was like 90% of the way to realizing I kinned her at that point

Also don't make fun of me for kinning Catra there's no RESPONSE to people making fun of you for kinning Catra THAT DOESN'T MAKE YOU SEEM MORE LIKE FUCKING CATRA OKAY

Anyway, the following scene makes it clear that this is not a one-way dynamic. The two banter, and it's clear Adora knows how to get under Catra's skin and annoy her as well. This is notable in a few places MUCH further on, but it is a difference worth highlighting NOW.

Once Adora leaves, Catra's primary goal is still to get under her skin. She's angry about it, she's mean about it, but she's still just doing what she's always done. The relationship between the two doesn't actually change as much as the context does. I'd say the relationship itself doesn't change much until the final season, at a scene I'm sure I'll have a lot to say about.

On the flip-side, Adora's goal when it comes to Catra is simply to fight her off. But that's not all there is. At points, it's clear that Adora holds some sort of REVERENCE for Catra, and while Catra is very capable of very mean things, don't get me wrong, Adora sees Catra as more of a threat than she realistically is.

At a few moments I'll point out she also relishes in getting under Catra's skin, but admittedly those are few and far between.

People have gone over this introduction billions of times, so I won't BORE you to death with it, but Shadow weaver's introduction does hint at a lot of what we'll learn later. I think it's very notable that while Shadow weaver brings a dark gloom that encompasses both our leads, her vile tendrils only dare to touch Catra. We learn the specifics of the dynamic these three have later, but it is a very unique and terrible situation to be the least favourite of an abusive guardian. Especially if you are repeatedly reminded of that fact.

I'm not gonna go over all the body language shit I've seen other text posts about it there's plenty of them a lot of focus in this show goes into tiny details where characters are constantly reacting to the world around them, and very rarely do we get lame stretches where anyone's face is just frozen and unflinching while they listen to someone else.

with all due respect to the setting at this point in time the bright moon rebellion is so pathetically anemic it's the two teens, some movie night lesbians, an immortal princess queen, and a bunch of fucking trees.

And you'd think the one carrying the team would be THE IMMORTAL PRINCESS QUEEN, BUT NO, ITS THE FUCKING TREES DOING ALL THE GOD DAMNED WORK

This introduction is fine. I don't particularly like it, nor have any strong feelings about it. It establishes the relationship between glimmer and her mother, but besides that it doesn't honestly do much. And don't come at me with "Uh, all it needs to do is establish that relationship?" Yeah, no shit, but we just had a better introduction to our other lead characters. And yes, those are the MAIN leads, the sort of heart of the show, but that doesn't mean that the other characters are unimportant. Glimmer's development later on is truly interesting, and Bow becomes a massively inspiring character. Fun jokey times are fine or whatever to show that they're immature and don't know the first thing about war, in contrast to our full-blown child soldiers raised from birth in the fright zone, but we really don't learn anything particularly INTERESTING about our best friend squad compadres in their intro, nor do we really see any of it until episode 2, to be frank.

This is something we don't actually see much of-- Catra has this ideal of being a conqueror, but it's very clear that she doesn't want that. Her threats are vapid and aimless-- She can enjoy some chaos, sure, but a shit-stirrer isn't gonna use that feces to build brick shithouses that they never intend to fall.

I think this should have been elaborated on more, personally. Catra is comically terrible with authority, and her plan, as stated later, is to wait it out until her and Adora are the ones calling the shots. But we don't really see what she thinks conquering even looks like, and it's not clear whether that's that she hasn't even imagined it and just likes evil words, or if she genuinely wants to rule with Adora as her Queen.

I gravitate towards the first, but that's partially because I wake up and post shit like "I want to destroy the world and rule its dust" and then forget I posted it when someone likes it 5 minutes later. If she do, in fact, as studies point toward, "be just like me fr," then I fully understand. If not, then I'd like to understand.

Fuckin dweeb pulling the "my mom doesn't want me hanging out with you anymore" card

HA! Ah, what a bitch. Anyway, she's lashing out, but it's also quite tragic. A lot of people seem to think Adora IS, in some way, a people pleaser, but in reality she just has such an ingrained and violent sense of justice that she wants to right every wrong she has ever and will ever come across. She believes her validity is tied to what she can provide to the world, and she's got a natural sense of charisma, so it's natural for someone who refuses to blend in and naturally tends to put people off like Catra to have this view of her.

In reality, Adora is just-- a good person. And people LIKE good people. She's not a good person with an asterisk-- a good person with terms and conditions-- someone who falls into the definition of a good person while feeling and being treated like something else. Catra is the "a tomato is a fruit" of good people. Adora is just, like, a 1 dollar costco hotdog of a woman. An inarguable good treading water on this earth, no matter how hard it tries to pull her under.

Imagine falling for a brat with mad hops, like a fucking 50 foot vertical, you say you're too tired to play their favourite board game and they go hang out on your neighbour's roof, couldn't be me. Get fucked I guess

Yeah this is sad. Empathy is very much a learned skill, and people who don't learn empathy don't GET happy FOR people. Catra's not a complete person yet. She's not ready to be. That doesn't happen for a really long time, during an exceptionally long manic spiral. We'll get there, calm down, don't think about how far away that is and how much I've already yammered on.

Anyway, if you find yourself getting jealous or annoyed instead of getting happy for people, consider empathy isn't what you thought it was, and that you might still need to work on yourself.

My feelings are that they are literally child soldiers who were likely raised sparring each-other.

I was raised sparring other children and I ended up fine! Not for war, for Karate. And I didn't end up fine. And neither did they. Anyway, my point isn't even specifically that because this is sci-fi fantasy it's ridiculous to hold real life standards to it, it's more-so that because it's sci-fi fantasy there's extenuating circumstances that are going to affect how these two characters treat each-other. I'll go into hotter takes later, I'm sure, and get people to send me plenty of death-threats, but I'm gonna go into the nuances of exactly what forms Catra's abuse takes, and how it differs given by the separate circumstances we're shown the two in throughout the show.

I think they serve the setting and are written well, I just subjectively am not a sucker for the way they be. Their friendship with Mara is cute tho

Hey guys, we need to talk. Because a certain little something in TMAGP 8 is causing what is genuinely the most toxic part of the Magpod fandom at large to once again rear its ugly head. So let's talk about podcast character appearance head canons, shall we?

I'm tagging this with the Magnus Archives, TMA and Magpod tags because I am absolutely calling all of you out, but if you don't want spoilers for The Magnus Protocol episode 8 then stop reading right now.

. Okay, so, Gerry exists in the TMAGP universe. He's happy (or at least acts cheerful). And some people have headcanoned this to mean that he is no longer goth, or at the very least isn't dying his hair black with bad box color. And other people have decided to get seriously agro over this. I have literally seen with my very own eyeballs someone call "un-gothing" Gerry a "hate crime" and calling the person they were talking to "gothphobic."

Let me make this absolutely clear for all of you: podcasts are a purely audio medium and unless a physical trait of theirs is explicitely stated, everyone's headcanon for how a character appears is valid. Goth TMAGP Gerry is valid. But also

Rainbow Goth TMAGP Gerry is valid. Pastel Goth TMAGP Gerry is valid.

Not Goth At All TMAGP Gerry is valid.

Bald Gerry who has actually gotten his brain cancer diagnosed in time and is getting treated for it is valid. Somebody's headcanon of a character that has no canonical description to them, or whose headcanon matches the few crumbs of canonical description we have but otherwise doesn't look the way you imagine them to, is not going to take away from your own headcanon of what a character looks like. If someone imagining or drawing a character looking a different way from how you imagine them looking somehow takes away from your enjoyment of the fandom or otherwise makes you feel like you need to barge in and tell them that they're Wrong and need to conform to your headcanon or else, that is a reflection on you, not them.

And this problem way predates TMAGP, let alone TMAGP 8. The only description we have of John is that he is in his early 30's and has prematurely greying hair.

If someone thinks he looks like the pastiest motherfucker to ever dwell in a basement, an extra-in-the-Adam's Family or Tim Burtan protagonist of a man, let them.

What's that? You want to tell them that John is BROWN and if they don't headcanon him looking that way they're WRONG and RACIST? Back away from the keyboard and go outside.

(Ironically, as someone who started getting grey hairs in my hair in my 20's myself, I'm pretty sure everyone's headcanon of John, with tiny little whisps of grey in his hair, is wrong, because if he was so grey that people were surprised to learn he was "a child of the 90's," he was probably full on salt-and-pepper when he was in his 20's.)

The only description we have for Martin is that he (man who canonically has the self esteem of a used doormat) describes himself as "not the smallest guy", Not-Sasha called him "roomy", Melanie is skinner than him, and Jonny said he imagined him as a "bigger guy" who would beat Alex in a physical fight. If someone decides to take this information and conclude that it means he's tall, broad and has muscle, rather than that he's overweight, fucking let them. If your first instinct to this is to run to your keyboard and call them "fatphobic" or otherwise bash them for it, I once again urge you to back away from your keyboard and go outside.

Someone headcanons Basira not wearing a headscarf? We have exactly 0 canonical physical description of her and the people who headcanon her as having one are basing that purely off of her name alone. Fucking let them. Someone headcanons Melanie and/ or Georgie as a skin color you don't agree with or a hairstyle you don't like? Fucking let them. As long as someone's headcanon of a character's description doesn't contradict the few canonical descriptions we have of a character, why do you care? Them having a different headcanon from you doesn't take away your right to imagine the characters looking however you like, anymore than it should take away their right to do the same. Someone headcanoning John as white (or Black, or Asian, or Mixed, or whatever) isn't going to make all of the fanart of John as brown with long hair suddenly disappear, nor the fanfiction describing him as such (although I do often wonder if the opposite is not true; is the fact that John looks the same in so much of the fanart I see on here really because of fandom "consensus", or is it because people are absolutely awful to anyone who draws him Different?). Someone headcanoning Martin as not fat isn't going to make the mountains of fanart of him as a fluffy little marshmallow vanish into the void (although I do remember hearing about someone getting bullied off the internet for daring to draw Martin as not fat). And someone headcanoning Gerry in TMAGP as not being goth isn't going to take away your preciouse goth TMAGP Gerry headcanon. That should be part of the fun of it, shouldn't it? Seeing what different images people have conjured in their heads of these characters we only get to experience with our ears, and celebrating the differences as well as the similarities? Why are we bullying people into conforming to one appearance of a character when no actual canonical appearance of them exists?

How he’d found the time they didn’t know, he always seemed to be doing just a little more than should be possible but they didn’t question it. 

Jazz seemed nervous as she plugged in her USB and accessed the power point on Ghosts and Liminality. The tidal page had a picture of Danny in his Phantom form standing with a group of others, a boy with gray skin and blond hair, a girl with green hair and skin, and a goth with purple eyes and a dark skinned boy who looked around Danny’s age, and Jazz with the title “Ghosts and Liminals!” 

The next slide had simple text: “What are they and How are they made?”

With each slide she read the text on the screen allowed and then added any context or anecdotes she thought of, or had prepared.

Made of ectoplasmic energy and obsession

Made either:

when someone dies with strong enough desires

An idea gains enough traction to take on a life of its own

Immutable concepts and gods

Must be allowed to indulge in obsessions or they will cease to exist

All have basic abilities such as flight, intangibility, invisibility, and minor shape shifting

On top of basic abilities most will have additional powers based on their obsessions

Immortal unless killed 

Love to fight

Liminals

Made when a human is exposed to high levels of ectoplasm for prolonged periods of time

Have some ghostly traits 

Ghostly traits vary person to person

Less susceptible to human illness and injury

“The ghosts on the picture are Kitty and Johnny, we’ve had problems with them but would consider them friends now. They’re the ghosts of two humans who died, but there are others, Vortext for instance is the ghost of Storms. Those ghosts who come from ideas are called ‘neverborns’. There seem to be almost an infinite number of ghosts, however not all of them are interested in having anything to do with us so we tend to get the same faces showing up a lot in Amity.

“I don’t know how many liminals there are. I thought they might be new with my parents' research but as I look into it more I think there are more natural sources of ectoplasm then my parents thought.” Jazz explained before going to transition to the next slide.

“I have a question-” Bruce started before Jazz hushed him. 

“Wait till the end please! I might answer it without you having to ask,” She scolded, and he felt very much like a schoolboy again as his children snickered.

Ghost biology 

Ghosts do not have any recognizable organs or bones

The only solid part of their being is their Core which is the source of their ectoplasm 

Any injury to a ghosts form not done directly to their core is considered minor and will heal

A healthy ghost is fully capable of mending any damage including removed limbs in a matter of hours or days depending on extent of the injury

All injuries not including the Core are considered minor 

Ghosts are considered young for at least the first hundred years of their existence and are often not considered adults until nearly 500

A caveat to this is ghosts are heavily driven by emotion and will often be the age they feel they are allowing ghosts to mature much more quickly, or more slowly

When this is the case ghosts are treated as the age they present and behave

Ghosts reproduce by shaping ectoplasm and Wanting a child badly enough

“Believe me it was incredibly scary the first time I saw Danny in his ghost form have something go right through his stomach. It took him a long time to convince me it wasn’t a big deal and it barely hurt. He does have to make sure he repairs the damage Before turning human again though or the damage can transfer over and I don’t need to tell you a hole in the gut is a lot more serious for humans!

“If I’m honest I only know ghosts that have stayed younger then they really are, for instance Youngblood who’s a few hundred years old and could be well on his way to adulthood if he wanted but has remained a child. I assume it can go the other way though, if a ghost is very mature for their age.”

Ectoplasm 

Ectoplasm is the energy that makes up all ghosts and the Ghost Zone itself. All ghosts can feed on the ectoplasm around them as well as produce their own by indulging in obsessions. The ghosts Cores produce the ectoplasm like a brain produces neurochemicals when exposed to the right stimulation.

Ectoplasm is a powerful source of energy but unstable. When it is stabilized into an ecto-crystal it is more stable and can be used as a power source safely by ghosts and liminals.

“Most ectoplasm is green like you see in the pictures. But it isn’t the only colour, some other ghosts produce different colours and it is highly tied to what emotion drives them. When it’s pure it usually smells like petracore but it can get pretty foul.”

What are Obsessions

Every ghost has one or more obsessions

They can be very literal things such as boxes, or ideas and emotions such as Love

In rarer cases they may have dual obsessions

Unlike for humans obsessions are very healthy for ghosts

Ghosts need to indulge their obsessions

Sometimes the way ghosts indulge their obsessions might seem evil, however it is almost always just amoral 

Obsessions shape every part of a ghost from their powers to thier physical appearance, to befriend a ghost you Must understand and aid their obsession

In very extreme circumstances a ghosts obsession may shift, sometimes this is healthy, more often it is a result of extreme trauma

“With my interest in psychology this was sort of hard for me to accept. From the outside the way ghosts obsess seems really unhealthy but it’s what gives them life. When not allowed to indulge in their obsessions ghosts will dysregulate and go to extreme lengths to try and get their obsession, if that doesn’t work they either go dormant if their core is still healthy enough or they will melt. 

“Ghosts change their obsessions very rarely, I’ve heard of it happening as they heal. For instance once a ghost has gotten revenge for themselves, if that was their obsession, their obsession might shift to avenging other people, or even protecting them so they don’t need to be avenged.”

“I have down that the ghosts are a monarchy, and technically that is true but the current Ghost King was a tyrant who was locked away thousands of years ago. I’m sure as soon as someone shows up who’s powerful enough to beat him his court will be happy to pick up where they left off with a better King, or queen, though I don’t think the title has to change based on gender.

Liminals

“Most of the people Danny and I know are liminals. I don’t want to talk about them in case they don’t want to be outed so I’ll talk about myself and my parents. We all had prolonged exposure after all. My ears are pointed,” She said brushing her hair back so they could see them, “And Danny is a little more then liminal but even in human form he has fangs. 

“My parents didn’t realize it but they could to the point they could subsist on their obsession without needing to eat or sleep as often as a regular human would. About a year ago I started developing the ability to tap into and feel other peoples emotions, I can feed on them a little too but I try not to because the Worst ghost we met did that and I don’t want to be anything like her.”

“I have a feeling the section about liminals will be familiar to a bunch of you. I know Damian is liminal though I don’t know how he was exposed to ectoplasm and some of you,” Her eyes skirted across Tim and Bruce. “Are toeing the line. You’ll probably notice Damian and Danny getting really close, and they might get in some really vicious looking fights. I promise Danny is playing at least.”

The family was left silent for a moment, Bruce knew he was thinking about Jason. Who had died, been exposed to.. What certainly seemed to be something like Lazarus water and come back, obsessive, aggressive, and emotional. He wished he’d had this powerpoint a long time ago. It helped understand Damian too but mostly he was thinking about Jason. He needed to reach out again, maybe meeting Danny would be good for Jason?

“So uhhh, ya, that’s the end of the powerpoint?” Jazz said, shifting from foot to foot in the awkward silence. “Any questions?”

A/N: I didn't want to leave Lilia out of the series even though I only write platonic relationships with him, so I wrote about his ideal friend instead. Enjoy!

Malleus' ideal type would be...

Someone who playfully teases him. Malleus can be quite a tease himself, and enjoys seeing people squirm under his playful eyes. While he knows how it feels to be at the receiving end of that treatment thanks to Lilia, he'd still get surprised if you reciprocate.

Someone who can see beauty in the desolate. Being the goth king-to-be that he is, Malleus' tastes tend to gravitate towards darker aesthetics: abandoned buldings, antiques, vintage paintings and furniture, gargoyles... He can't help but be slightly upset when people mistake a grotesque for a gargoyle, but he's amazed when you correct them before he gets to.

Someone who can enjoy grand gestures. It's possible it is a byproduct of him being a prince, but Malleus and words such as "subtle" or "small" are from different worlds. He just wants to shower you with the best offerings to show his attention. Maybe his desire to put valuables with you is because dragons tend to hoard treasure?

Someone who isn't afraid to call him out on things. Malleus is many things: powerful, wise, capable and kind. But he's also stubborn, prideful and has a tendency to do things first and ask later. When he unintentionally crosses your boundaries, tell him. When he plans to do something before asking, tell him. Don't be his yes man. He'll respect you immensely for calling him out. After all, you ability to treat him like any other student is what drew him to you in the first place.

Lilia's ideal friend would be...

Someone who appreciates cooking. Lilia is a creative person, and it really shows in his cooking (for better or for worse). While eating his food is... a bit of a challenge, your interest would not go unnoticed. Who knows, maybe enough interest would have him allow you join him for a cooking session! A perfect opportunity to stop him from being too creative.

Someone who can take his jokes and pranks. What can I say, Lilia loves having a good laugh, even if sometimes comes at the expense of pulling a prank or two. While harmless, his pranks can be annoying. Take them on as a challenge, and you'll never find your slippers again, or you will have all of your mugs laid on your kitchen floor face down once every 17 mornings. Depends on you if you find that fun or not.

Someone who gets along with Silver and Malleus. His sons are his pride and joy, no matter what. While Lilia knows that sometimes people just don't fit well together, he can recognise effort when he sees it. If you want that spot at the dinner table, you have to get along with his family first.

Someone who can still love the world, despite any hardships. Lilia has lived on this earth for long and faced heartbreak after heartbreak, uncertainty and grief. His healing is not over, and that's okay. He'll appreciate you talking to him about how the would doesn't suck that badly after all.

Sebek's ideal type would be...

Someone who respects Malleus and Lilia. If you want any chance of even getting along with Sebek, you have to pay your respects to two of the people he respects the most. While you don't have to kiss the ground they walk on, a few nods of approval during Sebek's endless speeches about their glory and superiority would not go unnoticed.

Someone who likes praising him. I'm not saying Sebek is easily swayed by praise, but he'd be joyous to hear how well he's doing. He's a dedicated guard with perfect scores at school and a will strong enough to move mountains. While the praise directed at him would be something he's not really accustomed to, he'd stop trying to redirect the praise towards Malleus soon enough.

Someone who challenges him. Sebek is not the most agreeable person, but he's always open to learning and improving himself. He's just very, very stubborn. You don't have to dismantle his whole ideology about humans or anything like that. Instead, just give him the puzzle pieces: he'll enjoy the challenge to figure out your thought process while trying to prove you wrong. Whatever the outcome is, Sebek will always come out of the other side with a newfound respect for you.

Someone who can teach him how to be gentle. Yes, Sebek is loud, extra and arrogant. But, above all, he wants to do right by his loved ones. If you can teach him how to come from a place of compassion and genuine goodwill instead of having him default on his aggresive demeanor, he'd be quite amazed with you. His job was never to be kind and gentle, but he can still be those things while protecting the people around him. He'll treasure everything you'll teach him, and he'll hold you in his heart close to his idols.

Silver's ideal type would be...

Someone who respects Malleus and Lilia. While Silver is not the type to sing their praises during every moment of the day, he respects his liege and his father more than anything. He can't have someone disrespect two of the most important people in his life. It's the bare minimum for him if you want him to pay you any mind.

Someone who is earnest. Silver is a kind and sweet boy. His help and advice are always genuine. His dedication to protect the people he loves come from a desire to pay back the goodwill of the people in his life. He might not notice when people don't have the most genuine intentions, but he can tell when you are a nice person, especially to the people around him. His wariness will quickly dwindle, and he will warm up to you in no time.

Someone who knows when to nudge him awake and when to let him sleep. Silver dislikes how often he falls asleep during the day, and has a lot of guilt from not being to stay awake. He really takes note of how people react when he falls asleep near them or when they wake him up. Even though he still feels very helpless against his curse, if you still treat him just the same then he'd feel the littlest bit less guilty about it.

Someone who shows him he's enough. Above all else, Silver believes in paying back the kindness he has received from the world. He works very hard, harder than needed. Sometimes he needs to be sat down and told that he is doing enough. He is enough. It will not change his hard working nature overnight, but acknowledging his efforts sure makes him feel like he's going in the right direction.

Yknow I think people over-hate any of the generations other than g1 but I will say that there’s something that’s never discussed that would be a legitimately valid reason for disliking later generations

TD is fundamentally a commedia dell'arte, which is an old style of play but mostly it is this thing below

Total drama g1 put a bunch of modern stock characters you would see in teenage shows— the loner goth, the alpha bitch, the dumb blonde, the punk badboy— and put them all in a camp setting to get eliminated. Not all of the stock characters were as immediately popular or prevalent (Heather’s alpha bitch is a lot more common than Courtney’s type a) but they were all recognizable enough. Which means you don’t really have to see how these characters act to know what they’re like, for the most part, and therefore you can kinda just get right into the drama. Which is great because (in my opinion) the appeal of the show is sticking these well-established teen show tropes in a somewhat unconventional sandbox and figuring out how they’d interact with each other.

Not all of the stock characters are created equally either— Gwen’s “loner goth” trope gives her some expected personality traits (sarcastic, misanthropic, judgmental of “preppier” types) whereas Justin’s “the hot one” trope doesn’t— but that’s why the elimination is so useful. Shallow tropes you don’t really know how to characterize and have interact with others in an interesting way just get booted. And, if these shallow tropes come back, like Justin did, you can just attach whatever character traits would be useful to keep the plot going. (I’m not saying it’s satisfying but if it works, it works, ig).

But then they eventually need to get rid of their cast and make a new one. And they already used up so many clear and iconic tropes. So now it’s a real head scratcher trying to come up with more. They manage to come up with some, though they’re much less prevalent— indie girls, would-be mystical types (Dawn is basically a tiktok witch in an era tiktok doesn’t exist), comedically sheltered nerdy kids— but just as many of the characters they come up with aren’t that. Instead of the geek or the homeschooled kid you get characters that lie a lot for no discernible reason or a guy who doesn’t talk but is good at inventing robots. Sure, about half the cast still has its stock characters but the other half is the writers just throwing whatever they feel like into the show.

And by Pahkitew? They’re completely out. All they have even resembling stock characters is parodies and tropes that aren’t character-specific (like Jasmine being Australian and therefore badass or some shit). If g2 is half commedia dell'arte, half nonsense then g3 is all nonsense.

A problem g1 doesn’t have. And this isn’t me saying that g2 or g3 are bad because of this, but they are different shows. And because they’re different, it makes sense why one would like one but not the other.

12 Traits to Give Your FMC That Are GUARANTEED to Make Her More Interesting!

She has an unlikely set of skills: Stick her with a set of skills or talents that might not pair well with her occupation or personality. Maybe she's a hellish warrior who's a beast at knitting. Maybe she's a wallflower with a four-octave singing voice. The combinations are really endless, and this is a great and easy way to inject some extra charm into her.

She doesn't exactly conform to societal norm views: And I mean this more than just not adhering to traditional gender roles. Maybe, in the scope of your world, she has a set of views that many might consider unorthodox, or maybe she's just a little more "off the wall" with her opinions than the other characters around her.

Identity crisis, identity crisis, identity crisis: Have her balance different roles that seem like they have no business mixing together. Have her face a trial that makes her question everything. Have her wrestle with the skeletons in her closet (literally or figuratively, whatever you think fits her situation better). Not only will this help make her more relatable, but its a great way to give her some internal strife.

She doesn't know who to support: Is she stuck in between two warring families? Or, maybe the will of her superior vs. the will of her beloved? Whatever the struggle is, giving her a sense of uncertainty around who to support can go a long way in terms of her own conflict and keeping reader interest.

A strong sense of justice goes a long way: I LOVE a girl who has a strong moral compass. Give us the girl who's up in arms about serving justice in the way she believe is right. Bonus points if she will do absolutely anything and everything to defend her ideals. Extra bonus points if her sense of justice doesn't exactly seem "kosher" on paper...

...or maybe it's ever changing: But, on the flip side of that, a more flimsy sense of justice--one that almost appears to change with the tide or time of day--can also pique some interest. This is more than just plain grey morality; this is morality that can flip for any reason.

Traits that don't seem to match up: Like the skills suggestion, this encompasses general personality traits rather than skills. Give us the fiercely independent woman that absolutely craves human touch, or the high IQ genius who has no sense of emotional intelligence, or the fearless leader who wants nothing more than to fall to the background. You can really go nuts here, too!

She's obsessed with SOMETHING: Whether its an obsession or an addiction, this is something I feel like I don't see a lot of in female characters. It could be a substance, or a person, or even a concept. Bonus points if she compromises whatever she might be doing to touch on this obsession. Drive it home for us, writer.

Double life, maybe?: Whether its metaphorical or totally literal, this trait is a great way to dig down to her depths and tack on some intrigue with her character. Is she really hiding a secret identity? Or is she trying to reconcile two contrasting parts of herself?

She's confident in her femininity: Look, I love me a woman who defies gender norms and goes against the grain of femininity, but in that regard, I feel like there isn't enough writing about characters who embrace it. That doesn't always have to be falling into gender roles, but maybe she's really in tune with her nurturing side. Maybe she's the picture of grace. Maybe she just really likes dolling herself up and looking pretty. There's nothing wrong having any of these traits, so having her be confident in them could be a breath of fresh air!

She knows her tastes and she knows them well: Is she goth? Is she coquette? Is she all glam? However she rolls, she knows how she wants to look, and she sure as shit embraces it in her overall aesthetic.

She's a leader...and an imperfect one at that: Yes, this is a dig at the classic "Strong Female Lead." The fact of the matter is that even the best leaders are imperfect, so if your FMC finds herself at the front of a rebellion or an organization, really emphasizing her imperfections can give her some nuance that doesn't make her seem totally and completely untouchable.

Small Gameplay Rules Update! 🔄

So I've made a new rule for teenagers to do with style phases that is influenced by their traits:

I've been experimenting with having more emo / goth / hippie teens recently and wanted to create a full list of options that I could refer to

I did this because I like the idea that teenagers go through an awkward stage before they find their personal style as young adults - I hope this gameplay makes teens feel like much more of a unique life stage! Often they just feel like an extension of YAs to me

If anyone has any suggestions of other phases I should add let me know! I just came up with these stereotypical ones off the top of my head

That's all, I know some of you guys like to follow my gameplay rules, so I wanted to announce this as an update :)

Psst Ckret...Do you also write x reader headcanons? If so, then for which fandoms?

I don't. They kinda squick me out, sorry.

As a reader, it makes me uncomfortable to imagine myself inserted in a fictional setting—I'm just the voyeur watching what the characters do, I don't wanna be part of the action.

And as a writer, it makes me uncomfortable to create because of the constraints: there's an element of obligatory wish fulfillment to the genre, which means no matter what I actually think about the characters' characterization, I have to contort the characterization to fit what the asker wants, or else I'd be kind of a dick wouldn't I.

(ex: if there's a character who's a Tree Person whose family was incinerated by Fire People and now he canonically has an unquenchable burning hatred of Fire People and somebody sends an ask like "how would this character react to a reader who's a nice Fire Person who feels bad about his family's deaths? 🥺" then what the asker wants to hear is "this character will be surprised to meet such a kind Fire Person and learn to let go of hate thanks to them" or something, but what I'd probably really believe is "reader's gonna have to do a helluva lot more than be 'nice' if they don't want character to murder them in the middle of the night with a bucket of cold water." But that would be rude of me. That's not what the x reader genre is for. But I'm not gonna write something I think is OOC just because I know the asker wants to hear it.)

Plus, aside from the pre-assigned traits ("what about a reader who's goth?" "what about a short & fat reader?" "what about a reader who plays the same video game as character?" "what about a reader who's kind of a grumpy asshole but cares for the character?" ) the expectation is to keep the reader insert character as bland & non-specific as possible to maximize the amount of people who can picture themselves in that role. And I don't do well with that. I need to get deep in a character's head, and "aside from XYZ trait you've gotta make this character as average as possible" is by necessity pretty shallow. You can't give reader an in-depth backstory or anything.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the genre itself—perfecting the art of uninhibited wish-fulfillment that satisfies the desires of as many readers as possible is a noble profession that requires a specialized writing skillset. But it's not the genre for me.

If you wanna ask me about any of my headcanons or thoughts on scenarios & characters in a non "x reader"/non-self-inserty-wish-fulfilly capacity, I'm happy to do that. As long as there isn't the like, expectation that I'll provide a certain kind of answer.

How to tell a story with your character’s outfit

1) think about the ‘why’ of their style

You might put them in a flannel shirt and boots because that fits the vibe you’re going for, but why do they wear it? Not everything has to be super intentional, sometimes people just wear what they like/was accessible to them, but it can be a good thing to consider. If they dress for a specific subculture (punk, goth, etc) why are they drawn to it? What aspect of it is appealing to them? Same with pretty much any other style of clothes. Sometimes it might be more due to location or context, do they live somewhere that’s hot/cold? Sunny/rainy? Are they financially well off? Did the styles of their family or friends rub off on them? Some of this might seem unnecessary or trite, but thinking of it through their eyes/experience instead of purely aesthetic or arbitrary choices can help ground it in a sense of realism and make it feel like an extension of who the character is.

2) diversify

A lot of the time I think writers will get caught giving characters variations of either what they themselves wear, or a handful of specific styles/clothes that they like. This can get redundant and limit how much you can express about a character through the outfit. If you struggle with ideas, pay attention to what people around you wear, people in shows, clothing isles in stores, etc.

3) add little details that tell us something about the character

Small details can help a story be immersive, and help with some more subtle storytelling. However, do note that a single detail on its own might not speak specifically to the trait you’re thinking of. Ill fitted clothes could indicate carelessness, frugality, hand-me-downs, obliviousness, etc. On its own it might be somewhat generic, but within the context of everything else about your character it can fit in nicely to paint a picture. Get creative with these little details, and really think of what they could help say about your character. Mismatched shoelaces, how exactly they wear different articles of clothing (buttoned up/not, wrinkled, etc), whether they wear their watch with the watch-face on the top or bottom of their wrist, whether the frames of their glasses are thin and light or thick and durable, whether their boots are clean and shined or dirty and scuffed, etc.

4) think of what vibe/image the overall outfit has

When you describe the character, a small handful of traits/things should pop out at them. I would advise against being too all over the place with it, if you’re trying to use the outfit to tell your reader twenty different things about your character through one outfit, most of them are going to be lost and the overall first impression of your character is going to be muddled. Figure out what you want to come across first and primarily for your character, other details will slowly come out over time. First impressions are important!

5) leave something for the imagination (or at least for later on in the story)

Mystery is alluring. A reader wants to be intrigued by a character, for details to unravel over time instead of being told everything from the beginning. Sometimes it can be useful to seed something to find out about the character later, or at least something that would only be given depth later. Maybe there is an element of their outfit that feels out of place with the rest, and the reader only finds out later in the story that it was a gift. Or a character who is always hauling around a backpack has a fear of being caught off-guard/underprepared which only slowly becomes evident as the story progresses.

This is something that can be done with a ton of different elements in a story, from characteristics, quirks, dialogue, reactions, etc, with attire just being an additional avenue.

6) parallel and contrast different character’s outfits

This one is pretty self evident, you can use it to demonstrate two characters have very different lifestyles, personality traits, backstory, etc, or to parallel where they are similar. Is one messy, another tidy? Two siblings have the same inclination towards frugality from their shared past? Bright and flashy versus dull tones? Practical versus stylish? Etc etc. I find it especially useful to compare very different characters, or to contrast more similar characters.

For final notes, take everything here with a grain of salt. This is what works for me and what I enjoy in reading. Pick and choose whatever you like, and discard anything if it doesn’t fit with your goal or writing style. Writing advice isn’t hard and fast rules, it’s a craft that everyone does in their own way. Hi. You know what I wanna see in the new Tomodachi Life? Of course you do. I've been cooking this list for ten years.

Mii Customization

A makeup system similar to Miitopia's, if not the exact same one, is essential. While I personally still want my Miis to look like Miis, it feels pretty crucial to have those kinds of makeup options even for just Miis. Being able to share them is also a must. Bonus if we get tattoos.

It seems like we're getting new hairstyles, with an option to use an ombre gradient on them. I want them to go nuts. Different bangs options for certain hairstyles. Different ponytail/pigtail options. All kinds of different textures and styles. Anime-esque styles. Realistic styles. Textured hairstyles. Ahoge options like in Miitopia. Let me go apeshit.

Speaking of... Fantasy skintones. Customizable skintones, eye colors, and makeup colors. The skintones is a must for me, but I'm sure there are people out there who would LOVE to have that option too, to get their skintone just right, but also the skintones of their OCs and favorite characters.

Separated tops, bottoms, shoes, socks, hats, glasses, accessories, a la Miitomo, with more ability to customize their appearances. Bonus option: Allow people to make their own shirts and hoodies and such like in Animal Crossing, with a hub where you can share your creations with others. Bonus 2x if it uses the Miitopia makeup system and you can do all kinds of shapes.

Mii Personalities and Interactions

Traits a la Sims. The MBTI-based sliders were fine, but I want to mix and match traits, and I want those traits to mean something. I want those traits to heavily influence how a Mii reacts to situations, and not just influence their pose and funky things they say.

Memories. I want Miis to remember the fights they had, the good times and the bad (within reason), also like Sims. I want those memories to influence their relationships.

I need these motherfuckers to have cliques and friend groups and as complex of social lives as Nintendo can make them. I want to be able to make a graph of my Mii's relationships. And I want some influence over it, not just RNG. I personally don't want a TON of influence but I want some.

Yeah of course make them gay as shit. I'm not stupid of course I want gay Miis and queer Miis. I saw someone suggest opting out of relationships and babies and such and that's a damn fine idea too.

Not just traits, but preferences you can set. Likes the color red. Dislikes the smell of lemons. Loves horses. Dislikes corn. Likes goth clothes. Dislikes preppy outfits. Stuff like that.

Gameplay

I want to decorate each individual Mii apartment like in Animal Crossing. I want people to go apeshit nuts with furniture and whatnot. Complex builds. Some pre-determined rooms or room bases would be nice, and even just "you can put this thing in this room slot" would be fine too. Bonus if you can customize colors.

More group activities for Miis. More minigames and such. I actually haven't considered this one as much because I liked what we had and most of my desires are fine-tuning Miis, and we clearly already got it so the little guys can wander around outside.

But if they can wander outside I'd love more locations, more building types, more hangouts, more things to do.

Basically I need this to be the perfect ant farm of all the shit I like.

kalim with a goth!reader (romantic)

this is mostly based off the fashion and cosmetic aspects of it instead of personality traits most commonly assumed that a goth person would have.

•honestly it’s a visual shock to a lot of the students attending NRC. A girl dressed in all dark colors, heavy makeup, and just an overall intimidating look to her with a guy that’s pretty much the literal embodiment of the sun? crazy.

•Kalim, however, adores this about your relationship. he loves the dynamic it forms and just how different you are. he’s attracted to your confidence and openness, he likes that you dress the way you dress, and that you choose to continue it even if many of the other people at that school just don’t really understand it.

•he notices your fashion and likes to buy you silver jewelry because it’s just what he sees you wear most often. it’s a small sentiment but it can mean a lot to a person. not to mention, if he sees anything remotely bat or spider like, you best believe he’s buying it for you; it can become quite cluttered with all the decor and little trinkets he’s gotten you so make sure you have plenty of space.

•the one thing he likes most of all is your makeup. he’ll sit there next to you and watch every line you draw on your face with eyeliner and how elegantly you apply it with a beaming smile. he may not want to wear it himself all the time but he’d definitely let you do his makeup when you wanted to (maybe just to feel your hands on his cheeks as you guide his face side to side but he still enjoys it nonetheless). in the shelter of your own rooms, he’ll beg you to kiss his face with a deep red or black lipstick on just so he can relish in the sight of your lips imprinted on his brown skin.
