Shadow's eyes narrowed as he spotted them, and heard what was being said. He didn't know how to feel about such a thing, but clenched his fists anyway. "A bold claim. The hell even are you?" The hedgehog's stare was on them, readying himself mentally for any kind of attack, and he raised his fists up nearly defensively. "You know what. I don't even care. Just stay out of my way." He didn't know why he felt so stressed, so suddenly, but was trying to remain calm about it. Indifferent.

omg this is a hard one cause I genuinely love all of my ocs so much but I guess if I had to choose one, it’d be Shadow.

I could go on literally forever just talking about him oml, like he’s been one of my few first oc’s I’ve ever made and still use constantly. He’s been here putting up with my bullshit since day one dawg💀. Like omg I love him so much he’s literally a cartoon villain, he has the personality for it and everything. He’s such a silly guy idc how cringe he is I love him so much

It feels like forever.

In reality, it's only been six weeks, but to Shadow, it's felt like so much longer. The Refuge was a place of nightmares, and for a tiny five year old, it had been six excruciating weeks of torment. Finally free, Shadow had watched all the others clamber out of the cart, but had hesitated herself on the street. She didn't know this place, it wasn't familiar, and there were so many people scattered about that it was almost overwhelming. At least until she'd caught sight of a familiar dark head of hair, and she'd yelled louder than she'd ever yelled before.

"SPOT!"

The little girl had hurtled across the distance and all but flung herself into her big's arms, clinging tightly and immediately bursting into sobs. While she'd never been big in the first place, Shadow seemed even smaller now, her face drawn, dark circles beneath her eyes and scattered with bumps and cuts and bruises, but she wouldn't let go of Spot.

"...'m sorry...'m sorry..." came the whimpered words as she pressed her face into Spot's shoulder, entire frame trembling with her cries. She shouldn't have run away, she hadn't meant to drop Spot's hand, but she'd been startled and she'd panicked and before she'd known it, she'd been dragged off.

Shadow had had a long day at work and wanted nothing more than to come home to Daria. It had been a hot day, and putting out fires all day only made it worse. When he got home, he expected to be welcomed with a blast of cool air, but he was met with more warmth. He definitely wasn't expecting the air conditioner to break, and he definitely wasn't expecting to find Daria sprawled out on the bed in her underclothes with two fans blowing cool air on her.

A smirk found it's way onto his face as he stripped down to his boxers and climbed on top of her.

"Excuse the smoky smell. Just got done putting out a fire." He said before kissing her.

I know that this scene is about Shadow grappling with the fact he has alien DNA, but I feel like his thoughts in this scene are relatable to people with conditions like autism, BPD and NPD (not an exhaustive list) who struggle with feeling and being treated like an outcast or monster at times. For some, it’s because we struggle to operate in a world not designed for us. For others, it’s fighting against all the negative perceptions society has of us.

Shadow sees himself as a monster. But Maria assures him that just because he expresses himself differently, that doesn’t make him evil. I feel like especially for people who struggle with empathy, this really hits home. People often assume that people who struggle with empathy, whether cognitive or emotional, are heartless. And for those with personality disorders, they’re often treated as if they are abusive or manipulative just because of the disorder they have, even though people with said disorders are victims of trauma and abuse themselves.

I hope you all have a Maria in your lives. And if not, please remember that it’s your actions that define you, not your neurotype or disorder. If you struggle with socialising, or emotional regulation, or empathy, you’re not a monster. You’re strong for living in a world that so often seems to outcast and insult you. You’re strong for choosing to be as kind as you can be, even though so many people refuse to show that common courtesy in return. Even when you can’t be strong, you are not a monster.

Please be kind to yourselves. You deserve it.
