In other words, third-party communication software (such as WeChat) can also achieve this function as long as it is adapted.
Tumblr media
I strongly recommend that all major apps quickly adapt to this feature. Shichao still remembers that afternoon, opening the picture Heifang sent me in  HE Tuber front of my mother. . .
4. Widgets support interaction
Personally, I am willing to upgrade to iOS17 with this feature alone.
Because the widget supports interaction, I can complete to-do items, check song rankings, and turn on and off the smart home on the desktop.
It may sound like a “small change”, but it can improve the overall experience of the iPhone software ecosystem.
Previously, desktop widgets were in an embarrassing state of being able to only obtain information, and their capabilities were greatly limited. Many developers were unwilling to make widgets.
For example, a developer said that he has never made a widget because it does not support interaction.
Now as widgets support interaction and more and more third-party developers begin to adapt, the ecological limit of widgets will increase.
Perhaps soon, iPhone users will be able to play Chrome Dinosaur Parkour on the desktop without having to open apps one by one, water the manor at any time, and sign in with one click.
5. The phone number is updated
iPhone users can now customize their appearance when making and receiving phone calls, FaceTime calls, and AirDrop.
For example, if I set my colleague to be a dinosaur, the background color and font size can be set. So when he called, a green dinosaur jumped out.
According to official sources, we can also set our own image on other people’s phones.
Just imagine, when someone calls you, your carefully designed business card appears on the screen. Isn't this super cool?
However, for some unknown reason, Shichao and his colleagues failed to test it successfully. Anyone who has tried it can tell me in the comment area.
By the way, do you guys need to use FaceTime?
My colleague Dandan often uses FaceTime with his wife. After recently upgrading to iOS17, he found a new feature that is very useful, which is "video message" .
When FaceTime is not dialed, Dandan can leave some loving words to his wife.
My wife can see it when she's free, so she doesn't have to call back to ask.
6. Information is also updated
Now the Message App supports real-time sharing of everyone's location. You can set the duration of sharing, and your location will always be stored in the chat box, making it easier for the other party to confirm your location at any time.
In addition, messages also support converting audio to text. When replying to a message from the other party, just swipe right.
Seeing this, you might say, who in China still uses messaging to chat? Isn’t it just a verification code receiver?
Hey, that's true, but I want to tell you that this "receiver" has been upgraded.
iOS 17 now supports automatic deletion of verification codes after use, and the SMS list is finally no longer clogged with verification codes that are only valid for a few minutes.
7. Screen distance prompts
Surprise check, how far away are you from your phone screen right now?
For those of you who have trouble sticking your face to the screen, please remember to turn on "Screen Distance" after upgrading to iOS17.
This way it will forcefully remind you when you are less than an arm's length away from your iPhone. If you don’t hold your phone at a suitable distance, you won’t be able to perform other operations.
To be honest, I thought this feature was very good, but I only lasted a day and then turned it off because it was triggered too many times.
Don’t follow me, especially if you have children at home, I really recommend turning on this function.
Shichao now regrets his short-sightedness and wears glasses all day long, which makes his appearance surpassed by Yanzu's.
8. Elderly machine mode
In fact, it's called "Assisted Access", but when Shichao turned on this mode for the first time, he thought it looked like a senior citizen machine.
In this mode, apps not only enlarge the UI, they also support "functional refinement" to make it easier for you to get started.
For example, you can set the camera to only have the "photo" function, without video and selfie functions ;
You can also set the message to only have the "keyboard" function, without the emoji function.
You can also set the number of calls you can make and receive to only certain contacts to prevent the elderly from dialing the wrong number or encountering telecommunications fraud.
After experiencing it, Shichao felt that this thing really took care of the elderly and users with cognitive disabilities.
Although many apps already have accessibility modes, most of them simply enlarge the fonts. Each one makes its own version, and there is no unified standard.
I hope third-party apps can adapt to this "assisted access" mode.
Smartphones are getting more powerful and complex, but some people don't need them.
Speaking of accessibility, iOS 17 also adds a "real-time voice" . After opening it, press the side button three times to enter text and have the iPhone read it out, and you can also set some common phrases.
This greatly facilitates people with communication difficulties to use in daily travel.
9. Update suggestions
The above are the new features of iOS 17 that Shichao thinks are good.
Whether it is standby mode that makes it easier to obtain information, NameDrop that makes exchanging information, sending photos, and simulcast sharing more convenient, or widgets that support interaction, early warning of sensitive content, screen distance prompts, and FaceTime and messages Various creative functions.
Shichao believes that they can all improve the iPhone experience.
And that's not all.
On iOS17, the Safari browser's private browsing mode supports locking; if you have AirPods Pro 2, using adaptive audio, it can also customize noise control according to your environment; when you zoom in on a photo, it will automatically display "crop" Function.
If you are willing to try something new, you might as well try the iOS17 public beta now. Shichao has already recommended colleagues to update.
Of course, the current test system will inevitably have some problems such as bugs, poor battery life, and overheating.
Therefore, if you want stability, it is recommended to wait until the official version before upgrading.

Boost Your IQ: Falcon-7B and Zephyr-7B GenAI Essentials
Tumblr media
It’s no secret that creating your own conversational AI system can now be done with great performance on smaller hardware platforms, accessibility to the larger AI development community, and efficiency thanks to open-source large language models (LLMs) like Falcon-7B and Zephyr-7B. These are 7-billion parameter models, which are smaller than 13-billion and 70-billion+ parameter models. The “7B” tag denotes that these are 7-billion parameter models.
Although GPT-4 performs better than these smaller models at the moment, they predict that by 2024, the difference between the large, closed-source models and the open-source tiny models will be less. They give a quick overview of the two open-source 7B models mentioned earlier in this post, along with instructions on how to use them with the newest Intel GPU.
Falcon-7B
The Technology Innovation Institute created the untrained, pre-trained model Falcon-7B. It isn’t directly appropriate for chat on its own. Once adjusted to your dataset, it becomes a powerful LLM that can generate text for chat, text categorization, and question-answering. I T is an Apache License, Version 2.0-licensed open-source model for academic and commercial use.
Only the English and French versions of the RefinedWeb dataset were used to train the Falcon-7B. It is an enormous 2.8TB web-only dataset made up of 968M distinct web pages that was selected from a larger dataset from CommonCrawl. A larger and more potent LLM from the same family as Falcon-7B, Falcon-40B, was also trained using I T.
Zephyr-7B
Zephyr-7B is a model developed by Hugging Face that was released under the MIT License after being adjusted from Mistral-7B. Zephyr, in contrast to Falcon-7B, is already optimized for chat and ready for a chat program right out of the box. The UltraChat and UltraFeedback datasets, which are explained in greater detail below, were used to fine-tune Zephyr-7B.
UltraChat
A fictitious dataset of conversations produced using ChatGPT is called UltraChat. One phony conversation clip, for instance, has:
What are the differences in innovation that you see between big and small businesses?
They are an AI language model, so they are not biased, but they may still offer information based on my training set. Innovation between large and small businesses might differ in a number of ways: Resources: Research and development, experimentation, and prototyping can be funded more easily by large companies. However, tiny businesses might not have as much money as larger ones, so they have to be more deliberate in their innovation efforts.
This is just a small portion of the conversation because each training case is rather long. These kind of dialogue examples cover a vast range of subjects and number 774K. The discussion involves “rewriting, continuation, summarization, and inference,” as stated in the dataset description.
SuperFeedback
64K prompts from several models, such as GPT-3.5 Turbo, MPT-30B-Chat, Alpaca 7B, Pythia-12B, StarChat, and others, are gathered in the UltraFeedback dataset. For every prompt, four distinct responses are produced, for a total of 256K samples. The gathered samples are then annotated using GPT-4.
Using the Intel Developer Cloud to get started
To run the LLM examples yourself, you can start for free with a Jupyter Notebook hosted on the Intel Developer Cloud. This notebook combines the newest Intel AI hardware with Intel-optimized AI applications. The aforementioned models are available for use by I T. You can start using these two models right away because they were recently included to the Simple LLM Inference notebook. Launch the Jupyter Notebook by clicking the Launch button under “Simple LLM Inference: Playing with Language Models” on the homepage.
Remarks regarding the code
The Intel Developer Cloud instance comes with the necessary Python frameworks pre-installed, including torch, intel_extension_for_pytorch, and transformers. Fill the Falcon 7-B and Zephyr-7B models using the standard transformer framework:
from import transformers AutoTokenizer, AutoModelForCausalLM
Both PyTorch and Intel Extension for PyTorch are pre-installed in the conda environment pytorch-gpu that is included with the notebook in order to maximize the performance of the newest Intel Data Center Series GPU Max 1100. If necessary, you can install these on your own instances by visiting the GitHub links.
The loaded LLM model is denoted by self.model, and the data type is torch.bfloat16, which uses a lower data type on the Intel GPU to improve performance. One of the wonderful things about this extension is that if you are coming from another platform, you would need to modify very little code. All you should need to do is make these little code modifications and switch the device to xpu.
In brief
Compared to their much bigger model counterparts (such as Falcon-180B), Falcon-7B and Zephyr-7B are smaller LLMs, but they nevertheless provide performant and efficient inference. One model that can be optimized for many text tasks, such as question answering, text classification, and chat, is Falcon-7B. Zephyr-7B is an excellent conversation device right out of the box because it was already optimized from a different model named Mistral-7B.
After registration, go to the Intel Developer Cloud homepage and select “Simple LLM Inference: Playing with Language Models” to utilize any of the two models using the given sample Jupyter Notebook. You are free to bring your own Hugging Face models and check these ones out as well. They would be interested in knowing how you used these models on the Intel Developer Cloud.
Notice Regarding the Use of Large Language Models
Although LLMs such as Falcon-7B and Zephyr-7B are excellent resources for text production, please be advised that occasionally they may yield unexpected, biased, or inconsistent results with the prompt. It is advisable to go over the generated text very carefully and think about the usage and context of these models.
Additionally, using these models must abide by the terms of their license agreements, ethical standards, and best practices for A I.

What Is Chat GPT? – what is it used for?
What is Chat GPT?
Chat GPT is an AI chatbot auto-generative system created by Open AI for online customer care. It is a pre-trained generative chat, which makes use of (NLP) Natural Language Processing. The source of its data is textbooks, websites, and various articles, which it uses to model its own language for responding to human interaction.
This chatbot system provides information and responses to inquiries through AI. The popular version of chat GPT is the GPT-3 model.
Tumblr media
What is Chat GPT used for? The main feature of Chat GPT is generating responses like those humans would provide, in a text box. Therefore, it is suitable for chatbots, AI system conversations, and virtual assistants.
However, it can also give natural answers to questions in a conversational tone and can generate stories poems andm ore. Moreover, Chat GPT can:
Write code Write an article or blog post Translate Debug Write a story/poem Recommend chords and lyrics To make the AI carry out one of these demands, all you need to do is type the command into the chatbot.
What is Chat GPT trained on?
Chat GPT relies on NLP (Natural Language Processing). It’s an excellent tool for researchers and developers working on various NLP projects, and it has many specific tasks, domains, and applications available to work within.
It is well-trained on biased and unbiased data, in the form of text from books, articles, and websites. Chat GPT can reproduce data outputs and reliability – crucial for many sensitive apps and other valuable Al systems. However, it is still prone to error, and biases and depends on its training data – provided in 2021.
As humans we are, more and more, interacting with Al-powered machines, and Chat GPT is a revolution in the field of Al. It is a robust model and particularly advanced thanks to its deep-learning capabilities and NLP. Ultimately, it can generate human-like answers and is easily understandable to users. Thought that doesn’t always make it right.
What is Chat GPT coded in?
Chat GPT is built on the GPT-3 language model developed by OpenAI. Although the source code for GPT-3 hasn’t been released, a post on the Stackexchange site suggests that GPT-3 is written in the “same model and architecture as GPT-2”. The post goes on to state that the “GPT-2 source code is 100% Python”.
Chat GPT itself is apparently capable of providing code in Pythos C++ and JavaScript, should it be prompted to create any.
Tumblr media
Registration for Chat GPT To register to Chat GPT, you can use one of your existing email IDs and mobile number and then follow these easy steps to get registration done. Take note that Chat GPT price options now include a professional plan, should you need consistent, unfettered access.
The following are the steps:
Go to the login page in a browser. Create an AI account, click on sign up and enter your email id; for example, if you have a Gmail id and then click on Google, it automatically registers to your Google account. Then next, press the continue button, and it asks for your mobile number for verification. Then you receive a code on your mobile number, and it may charge you to get a code. Go to sms activation. Register and log in In the up-right corner, under the balance, select the top-up balance option to recharge. Scrolling down at the end, you have some options. Click to recharge. After recharging, go back to the home page and find Al services in the search box. Press the shopping cart button. Your country code mobile number is mentioned. Copy that mobile number and enter it in the Chat GPT mobile number verification section. Send code via sms. You receive a code. That’s your verification code. Enter this code in the Open AI box to complete the process. Choose the main reason why you register it. Such as, I am using it to explore features. In case of failure, change the mobile number of another country and then try again.
Is there Chat GPT for Android? There is no official Chat GPT app from Open AI, and there is no information as to whether there will be. There are purported ‘Chat GPT apps’ available in the Play Store, but these are not from the company.
Importantly, Chat GPT makes use of the GPT-3 model which is only accessible via the OpenAI Chat GPT page. But although there is no Android (or iPhone) app from OpenAI, you can access Chat GPT on your mobile device by going to the same URL.
Can I use Chat GPT on my phone? Yes, you can use Chat GPT on your phone. There’s nothing preventing you from doing so, as the mobile web version of the app will allow you to carry out the same actions as on a desktop browser.
Of course, you actually need a phone number for Chat GPT if you want to log in. And the ability to use Chat GPT on a smartphone makes mobile use very easy – as long as you can connect.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the theme I don’t know how to describe because it has too many things featured in it and it will take a year or
aro-ace theme!
note that you are allowed to use the theme for whatever you want, change all colors, images (you want to make it a marvel thing? go for it! It’s personal and you want to use other flag colors? go pick those rainbow colors!), but my inspiration was, well, not having seen aro-ace themes before and wanting to make one. I didn’t upload background images but you have the option. Feel free to edit as you please, just don’t remove the credit or claim it’s yours!
as always in the source you’ll find the link to the post with static preview, code and instructions/extra credits.
theme is contained, responsive, super customizable. It’s free! But as always consider donating to my ko-fi as this was a lot <3  like or reblog if you use! (or just if you like it, if you want to!)
this post will have: what you can edit from custom page, the widgets/scripts used with credits and some explanations. Asterisks * next to something will indicate that more about it will be said in the linked post. I’d apologize for the length but it’s due to how many things I added to the theme and that you should know about.
now, what can you edit from your customization page:
-nearly every font and its color and size, so that if a font is by default bigger than others you can easily reduce the size. There is a select menu for the body font with all the fonts present in this blog, so you know what they are and can type the one you want for other eleents. I think I only left a couple to be edited from the editor, like your quotes posts if you reblog them a lot. This includes h2 as it’s what you use as ‘big font’ in your posts and h3 in case you want to personalize it and use it for something on purpose, as it has to be added to the html of the post.
-one of the new things:I used a gradient for the backgrounds of the big container, the sidebar and the posts container, but also of tumblr’s default music player (latter done initially following @octomoosey‘s tutorial then messed with by me hence no album art).  See static preview posts. You can type the colors straight from the costomization page like this:
Tumblr media
if you want one solid color you can just write, for example: black, black as it needs at least two. To bottom/To left/to top/to right change the direction. The only thing you need to edit from the html is if you want to go from linear-gradient (like you see in the sidebar) to radial-gradient (like in the big container which has green in the center and purple on the outside) and vice versa, if you want.
-you can also upload background images of the sidebar, container and bigcontainer and select the optional blending with the colors, which can be none and you only see the images or something like screen or hard-color and check the results (bigcontainer as an overlay gif on Screen now)  -more typing: you can paste the symbol or the symbol code for the list items and the decorations around the post title, right now both being spades. *
-you can upload up to five background images if you enable the ‘changing background’ function otherwise only the first one counts. They will change when you refresh the page, thanks to @lmthemes
-you can turn on and off the music box (player3 by @glenthemes ), and if it’s enabled you can add two songs from the customization page (or go to the html editor and up it to four before it can get messy as it shows on hover), typing url, author, url of the album art, and song title. You already have We Are Golden by Mika as an example (takes a second to start due to the recording, watch out not to get scared if there is silence and then the first note)*
-optional searchbar in the sidebar with optional suggestions when you click on it (if you want them though you’ll need to go to the editor to type links and names, but you can turn it off and just keep the searchbar, like I said) also by glenthemes’ tutorials.
-the separator between text posts image is also optional and if turned on, you can also turn on and off whether the image is the avatair/portrait of the person who made the post, with a link to the original if it’s a reblog, or if you want the image to be one you upload yourself, 50x50px and it should resize to fit in (also with a link, in this case to the post itself so you can open it from the top of the page). One is the toggle button ifshowtinyimage, and the other is ‘tinyimageisthesource’, if you turn that off you upload the image yourself. If you add a source to your posts, it will appear among the permalinks regardless.
more under read more!
-besides all normal colors and borders you can pick the color of the border/glow/shadow (call it as you want) of three different categories, or turn it off: the mainglow for big elements like containers and sidebar and sidebar images, the audios glow for players like spotify, regular one or soundcloud. Finally the images shadow when inside your posts. The latter is set on inherit because it means that if an image is also a link like your tiny-image it will be of the same color of your links and change on hover. That is something you can only change on the editor by searching for color:inherit and change it to what you want, if you don’t want to turn it off.
-askbox colors have been changed with @eggdesign‘s tricks! look for ask_form in the editor and try changing the number of filter there to see more effects. Also the askbox never shrink, a fix by @whateverhtml -pinned post has a little banner, styled like permalinks.
-you can pick a color for top-info which are the date and notes. I left it empty because it automatically gets the default links color but you can pick it yourself.
-turn on and off unnested captions looks for textposts and for all other posts (as people who use xkit to edit previous posts will get blockquotes anyway and may not like the final result) thanks to @annasthms code. -blockquotes are of alternating colors, by @bychloethemes. You can obviously choose the same color if you want them to just have the one. You can also select the type of blockquote, if a solid line or dots or dashes.  -you can choose if your smaller sidebar image, sidebarimg2, is an image you’ll upload or if it’s your avatar/portrait by toggling it on and off. If you don’t want sidebar images and you don’t upload any, there are instructions on top of the html to delete the border so you only see the sidebar bg. (basically just delete their box-shadow) -speaking of which, your title will wrap around the second image like in the preview. If that doesn’t work for you you can try changing sizes and font or by going to the editor and changing the margin-top so it’s out of the sidebar image’s reach and can be a “straight line” again (in case it doesn’t fit and the long title is cut in the wrong place)
-you can turn on and off a copy link of the post button on the far left of your permalinks bar, so people can copy the permalink from dash - also by glenthemes.
-navigation links have two alternating colors, odd links right now are black, even links are white, and their hovers are the opposite of that. You can make them all of the same color, in which case you’ll need to look for .navilink a:hover and change the hover color for both. If you have custom pages and enable the link to show it will be automatically added. To change the cat icons just search for ‘cat’ and replace as pleased. To change the ask icon because maybe you don’t have them enabled look for ‘envelope’ with your ctrl + f. You can type urls and titles of navi links from the custom page, the first two are automatically home and ask, there are three more under the description. All icons from font-awesome have a black border so the white ones don’t disappear on light backgrounds, you can change that looking for .fas
-you can select post-sizes: 400, 450, 500, 540. Whether the sidebar is next to the container or on top will depend on your post size and the screen width as at some point they may not fit. They always do fit on desktop though, and on screens that are smaller than 800px the sidebar is assumed to be on top and will have a max height of 300px (but you can scroll down). I couldn’t make the bigcontainer get bigger for giant screens as I can’t calculate the right size in which all post-sizes + sidebar will look good.
-lightboxes show images with a glow too. Speaking of which you get lightboxes as always, pxu photoset fix and video resizing fix all by @shythemes and with the bychloethemes fix. npf photosets fix by glenthemes. No href.li addition from tumblr when you add a link to a post by @magnusthemes.
-soundcloud player is minimal and its play button is the same color of your permalinks icons thanks to shythemes tutorial. spotify is also minimal, instructions to change it are there.
-tumblr controls are small and semi-transparent until you hover, also dark regardless, followed painthemes tutorial.
-chats are styled like imessages by ncrthlanes now deactivated, submit posts have at least the submitter’s url recognizable, reblogged asks also get a background for the answer as well as borders, link posts are styled as much as a link-post can be styled.
-there are already links and similar things written to be an example in your customization page but in any case you get instructions in the editor and everything is divided in sections as much as possible. Also I’m here for any questions.

They Share A Kitchen
An intrulogical (can be read as platonic) fic
Originally posted here : https://archiveofourown.org/works/24317644
While the light and dark sides preferred to keep their distance from one another, they had to share some parts of Thomas’ mind. The imagination, for example, was split down the middle just like the two sides that ruled them, a mix of gnarled trees and fluffy clouds, unicorns and demogorgons, living in hostile harmony. They also had to share a living room, a few hallways, and the kitchen. Almost as if Thomas’ subconscious was trying to push the sides together.
But the sharing didn’t bring them any closer, especially considering recent events. The “dark” sides avoided the “light” sides and Roman avoided everybody. All the shared spaces did was give Logan reasons to share more fun facts at the breakfast table.
“Studies show certain animals that inhabit areas close to human activity have begun to develop nocturnal tendencies in order to avoid said humans,” Logan had said one day over a bowl of dry cereal.
“And what does that have to do with anything?” Virgil grumbled. Patton yawned.
Logan sighed. “I’ll answer your question with a question. Why do we always wait until eight am to get our breakfast?”
Virgil looked down into his coffee cup, and mumbled something.
“What was that?”
“...To avoid Remus and Janus.”
Logan had huffed triumphantly. Really, he found their little schedule fascinating. He made a little schedule on lined paper, marked out by half hours. He practically had their movements tracked down to the minute. Weeks worth of observation, neatly graphed out. It almost made Logan want to cry.
Six am to seven am seemed to be the hours where Janus, the resident morning person, dragged Remus to the kitchen and got himself a cup of coffee and made himself breakfast, before making a hasty retreat to his room. Remus made breakfast after him, then left at around seven forty five am. Then the ‘light’ sides (minus Roman) claimed the kitchen from eight am to ten. Sometimes even to ten fifteen, depending on what Patton and Virgil made.
Roman grabbed whatever leftovers there were at ten thirty. Afterwards, (around 11) Janus would emerge to get another cup of coffee and an early lunch, and Patton would get a cup of tea to drink and chat with him. Roman would slip into the kitchen at noon to get water or a snack, then right at twelve o’ eight, Remus would bolt into the kitchen, grab something to eat, then dash away before Patton could enter for another cup of tea at around twelve o’ twelve. At two, Virgil and Patton would sit in the kitchen and chat.
There were only two ‘dead zones’ Logan could find, where nobody visited the kitchen. Between two thirty and four, where everyone kept to themselves in their room until dinner (which Janus and Remus ate at four, himself, Virgil and Patton at five, Roman at around six if he remembered to eat), and from three am to five thirty am. Logan never had the chance to observe the kitchen that early in the morning— which is to say he never had an excuse to disrupt his sleep schedule.
Even then, his curiosity plagued him. Virgil sometimes woke in the night to grab a midnight snack, but was he ever there at three thirty am? Some mornings there would be a pot left on the stove, or flour on the counters. Maybe it was Roman, trying to cook but only succeeding in making a mess. Or Janus? No, Janus always cleaned up after himself, it wasn’t him. Did Patton wake in the night to cook or bake…?
The logical thing to do was to ask if anyone went into the kitchen at those hours. The logical thing sounded like far much more trouble than simply staking out in the kitchen and waiting to see if someone came along, then ask them if their late night (early morning?) visits to the kitchen were a part of their routine. That would cut out any unnecessary conversation. Certainly it would be the best option— avoid any conversation that could possibly turn into an argument and distress Thomas, while also ridding himself of this curiosity.
All of those events led to now. Logan sat on the couch, close enough to hear if anyone entered the kitchen, but obscured enough by the couch that he wouldn’t be seen. Not that that mattered, both the kitchen and the common area were pitch black. Not a single sliver of moonlight shone through the windows. He checked his watch. Two fifty-one. He’d been sitting there for an hour.
Logan briefly paused his train of thought. Why did he care so much? He wanted to complete his chart. Why did it matter to him?
Logan sighed. The mystery person wouldn’t be here for at least another forty minutes. And that is assuming that they follow their schedule every single day. It made sense that there would be nobody in the kitchen. Every single metaphysical person was asleep. Except for him.
Being thorough is important. What if he had missed something? Or this person's trips to the kitchen add a whole new variable to his chart? Who knows. He certainly didn’t, so he had to find out.
He checked his watch again. Three twenty am. Huh, overthinking truly was a great way to pass the time. Only fifteen minutes to go until the truth revealed itself to him in the form of one of his fellow sides stumbling into the kitchen. Maybe it would be Patton, taking sock-muffled steps into the kitchen on his way to bake, or Janus with a novel and a desire for a cup of tea. The possibility that simply nobody went to the kitchen between three thirty am to five am hung in the air. It didn’t make him any less curious.
Footsteps. Heavy, thundering things in the kitchen. Logan jolted. Slowly he turned around to look into the kitchen, and found that the lack of light made his eyes useless. All he could see was a shadowy figure in front of the cupboards. He heard one open, then shut a minute and a half later.
Logan watched the shifting darkness. Metal scratching metal—what the hell was that? He cringed at the harsh sound. More scraping noises. If he could feel anything, he’d classify the prickles running up his spine as fear, or anxiety, but since he certainly had no emotions, he chalked the sensation up to being cold. Even then, Logan flinched hard when the shadowy figure used a food processor. Three thirty five am.
More metallic scraping (sharpening a knife?) mingled with mindless humming. Maybe it was Roman, making himself food. He hadn’t eaten that day, so he would certainly be hungry. So certainly, if Logan were to turn on the light, he would see Roman in his Beauty and the Beast onesie. But then again, Roman was a shit cook. There wouldn’t be any scraping of knives or sounds of rustling in cupboards— maybe the rustling of a cereal box.
Could it be Patton? No. Patton always loudly sang while cooking. Or maybe it was Patton, and he was just  being considerate of the other sleeping sides. How would he even confront the mystery chef? ‘Hey, not to sound weird but I’ve been keeping track of everyone’s kitchen time and I want to know if you do this every night. I have a chart. Yes, it is laminated, and color coded. Tell me about your schedule.’
Logan stared into the darkness of the kitchen unblinking. Rustling of… something, more chopping and scraping noises. Something sizzled, and Logan slowly breathed in. Oh, it smelled wonderful, rich and herbal… garlic, maybe. And onion. He checked his watch. Three thirty am, and he still had no clue who the hell was making food. What were they making?
The fridge opened, and Logan could finally see. The cold light glinted off a long, sharp knife. Logan swallowed. There was a hunk of meat on the cutting board. Peering into the fridge was, well, someone, but when they turned their head, Logan could see the bright shock of white in their hair—
“Remus?” Logan exclaimed, bewildered.
Remus jumped and let out a panicked shriek. Logan stood up from his place at the couch, and blindly stumbled to the light switch. Remus flinched at the sudden light, and Logan just blinked as he took in the sight before him.
Sitting on the counter was a baking sheet with a raw rack of lamb perched upon it, covered in some sort of seasoning. On the stove sat a pot of golden broth that barely simmered, and the source of that delectable smell— a skillet of shallots and rice. Another pan of perfectly cooked mushrooms sat close by. Logan blinked.
“What is this?” Logan asked.
“Food,” Remus answered, “and I would’ve let you have some if you hadn’t scared the shit out of me, ‘figuratively’.”
Logan raised an eyebrow. Remus looked as disheveled as ever, even though he only wore a pair of boxers with little octopi on them. For once he wasn’t wearing his eyeshadow, and his hair looked like he’d just rolled out of bed. A grain of rice was caught in his moustache. What an odd thing to notice.
“I apologize for interrupting your cooking,” Logan deadpanned, “but if you would be more specific?”
Remus shoved the pan into the fridge, then picked up a bottle of white wine. He took a long swig out of it before pouring a bit into the pan with the rice. It sizzled loudly, and he started mixing vigorously.
“I’m making garlic and herb crusted roast lamb and mushroom risotto,” Remus said.
Logan blinked slowly.
“What?”
Remus looked up from his pan, a little smile on his face.
“Come on, Logan! You’re the smart one, you should know what a risotto is!”
Logan sat down at the kitchen table, staring dazedly at Remus.
“I know what a risotto is,” Logan said, “a northern Italian dish made with rice and broth until it reaches a creamy consistency, sometimes made with white wine or butter. I didn’t know you knew how to make it, though.”
Remus added a bit of the simmering broth to the rice.
“Why not? I mean, gluttony, envy, greed, all those dirty little sins Thomas associates with me,” Remus said with a shoulder wiggle.
“Well—“
“Are you jealous of my skills? I know how to keep a man happy, Logan. Don’t you know? The fastest way to a man’s heart—“
“Is through his stomach.” An idiom Patton had taught him. Remus nodded rapidly.
“Yes, like gutting a deer! You carve open the stomach and poke through the diaphragm to cut the esophagus and pull everything out! And then you yank out the heart!” Remus cackled manically, pouring more broth into the pan and stirring. A bit of rice flew out. “It’s really tasty. Deer heart, I mean.”
Logan nodded, “And very nutritious. High in potassium and protein.”
Remus nodded even more, his white streaked hair flopping into his eyes. Logan was still in shock over this whole thing. Who the hell knew Remus could cook? Certainly not him. Now came the hard part, talking.
“Did you know that sheep don’t have teeth in their upper front jaws? And that like, a bunch of sheep are gay!” Remus rambled.
“Do you do this every night?” Logan questioned.
“No,” Remus responded, “most of the time I cook in the buff— it’s freeing!”
“That’s… I mean. Uh. Do you cook every night,” Logan deadpanned.
Remus shrugged.
“On and off. Some days I do some days I don’t!”
Logan opened his mouth, then shut it. Remus, as far as he could tell, was every single bit of chaos Thomas had (that wasn’t already represented by Roman). As Remus himself had said, he was the opposite of rational thought. Remus added a little more broth to the rice, stirring quickly.
“It’s my turn for questions— I have about seven,” Remus said. Logan opened his mouth to respond, but Remus started rattling his questions off.
“One, why’re you in the kitchen? I’ve never seen you up this late, not very logical of you.”
Logan shrugged, not sure what to say. Lying was Janus’ thing. So he straightened his tie, and said:
“Recently, I have been collecting data about the habits of the other sides, namely, when they use the kitchen. A pattern started to emerge, but there were gaps in my data, one of which exists because of the other sides waiting to make dinner, but the other gap I could not fill, nor could I simply ignore. I assumed everyone would be asleep—“
“—And you got me instead!” Remus chirped. “A pleasant surprise, isn’t it?”
Logan started at the knife laying on the counter. Next to it laid a sharpening steel. His wandering eyes landed on Remus’ back. So pale...
“...It’s certainly a surprise. Where did you—“
Something struck him right between the eyes before clattering to the ground. Logan blinked in shock, before realizing Remus had simply thrown a spoon at him.
“It’s my question time, whore!” Remus exclaimed. He summoned another spoon
Logan nodded.
“My apologies,” Logan said, “go on?”
Remus’ brows furrowed, but he continued.
“Questions two, three, four, and six—“
“Six?”
“I’m going out of order. Question two: is Roman still a shit cook? Question three: why are you surprised? Four, how long were you sitting there, and six, do you want to eat with me?”
Logan’s eyes went wide as he tried to take in all the questions. Remus stirred in a little more broth, but he never took his eyes off of him. A little disconcerting, but in character for him.
“Well,” Logan started, “Roman is not the most skilled in cooking. His ideas are creative, but the execution tends to be subpar. While cooking he is easily distracted, which leads to burnt things. The food he summons is wonderful, though. However, this information may not be recent nor accurate because I have not seen Roman since the events after the wedding.”
“The events— you mean when Padre flipped out and turned into a frog? And Jannie told everyone his name, and Roman got princey pissed?
Logan nodded.
“Yes. But to answer question three as honestly as I can, I did not have any reason to believe you had any cooking skill, especially not of this level.”
Remus tilted his head. “Why so?”
“Because of what you represent to Thomas,” Logan explained, “all of his “bad” creativity. I had no reason to believe you could make anything good, let alone what smells like a finely made risotto.”
Logan expected Remus to throw something at him again. Instead, Remus seemed surprisingly calm, looking down at his risotto. Logan straightened his tie again.
“Not only that,” he continued,” but also because Thomas does not possess cooking skills of this caliber.”
Remus chuckled.
“Thomas also does not possess knowledge of a lot of the shit you and Jan talk about. Like, philosophy and psychology and a whole lot of other stuff. Roman knows spanish! So who’s to say that I can’t cook? Besides, Thomas’ perception of me hasn’t done shit since the split, ya know? He has no power over me. He sees me as bad, yeah, and I don’t give a fuck. If you ask me, if Thomas let Janus take control instead of Prudey-Patton, we’d be sailing much much much smoother. But that’s only my opinion of course!”
“Really?” Logan asked, surprised.
Remus raised an eyebrow. “Yeah, I think Janus would be a much better ‘morality’ than Patton. He has good opinions of the shit Thomas should be doing. And, he likes me! I’d say it to his face.  Patton’s face. Actually I might have? I’m not sure! I’m not sure…”
“I don’t think you have,” Logan said, “but it would be unwise for Janus to take Patton’s role, since Thomas is attached to Patton and the sudden shift would be detrimental to his mental and emotional health. Besides, I don’t think Janus could actually take his place, since he also acts as Thomas’ self preservation.”
 Remus rolled his eyes.
“Whatever. Question four! Let’s go!”
“I was sitting on the couch for about an hour and forty four minutes. Before that I was in my room. I came out and sat on the couch at one fifty one, so I wouldn’t be tempted to go to bed.”
Remus whistled low. He let go of the spoon, which kept stirring the risotto even without his touch.
“Goddamn, that’s dedication. I can’t even sit still for half that time! What would you have done if nobody showed up?”
Logan looked awkwardly down at his hands. Honestly, he hadn't thought of what he would do.
“Go back to my room and sleep,” Logan answered, “but stay up this late for at least a week in order to make sure I had proper data.”
Remus crossed his arms and leaned back against the stove. With one hand, he tapped his fingers to his thumb in a quick rhythm— index finger to thumb, middle finger to thumb, ring finger to thumb, pinkie to thumb, over and over again.
“It really must mean a lot to you. Which leads to question five!”
“I thought you said you were—“
“Going out of order? Well, I’m not! I’m unpredictable like that. Question five! Why does charting our schedules mean so much to you?”
Logan stared at the knife laid on the counter. For a split second, he considered standing up and leaving. Because how could he explain the reason he decided to chart their movements? There were so many, each one sillier and more trivial than the last, each one of them soaked in emotion, so much so there was no denying how he felt, and if the others found out they’d never ever listen to him ever ever again—
But on the other hand he so desperately wanted to tell him, just to get the words out, so they’d stop pushing on him. Logan fiddled with his tie.
Logan took a slow breath in.  On the counter laid the knife. Logan’s eyes flicked around the kitchen. Sharpening steel, cutting board, some leftover herbs, Remus, the streak of white in his hair. The air was cold, the floor was hard, the chair felt sturdy, and his tie was smooth. Sizzling of the pan, his own foot, tapping restlessly on the ground, Remus’ quiet humming. The air smelled like chicken stock and a bit of garlic. None of Remus’ usual reek, surprisingly. Logan moved his tongue around a little. His mouth tasted like spit. Nothing more, nothing less. He breathed out.
“I realized that all I do is pointless. Every plan and suggestion I give is ignored, or unwanted, unless I push and push… but even then, I’m not listened to. The chart is what I believe Janus would call a ‘coping mechanism’. I know this, too, is pointless, but knowing that I can complete this without any interruption, without any need for input from the others is comforting. It does nothing, and yet I’ve dedicated a good deal of time towards it.”
Remus stared at him, expression unreadable. That was until a bright, manic smile split his features, and he clapped his hands.
“So it’s like jacking off!” Remus exclaimed.
Logan made a face, looking at Remus with nothing but unbridled confusion.’The spoon in the risotto kept on stirring by itself.
“...And how did you come to that conclusion?”
“Well, it makes you feel phenomenal, it’s something you do for yourself, and it’s good for stress relief!”
Logan blinked slowly, then looked down at his lap, desperately trying to keep his composure.
“That is a good metaphor. Just like masturbation, this chart is, in the end, pointless.”
Remus snorted, and rolled his eyes. He sat down at the table next to Logan, and their knees bumped. Remus set both his elbows on the table.
“I don’t see how it’s pointless.” He said, “It’s something you’re doing to make yourself feel better because everyone else is shit. As you said, a coping mechanism. What makes it pointless?”
“It serves no purpose,” Logan deadpanned.
“Ya see, Logan, when you really, really think about it, everything is pointless!” Remus exclaimed. “Every meal we eat and person we see and every idea we have and every place we go and every happy moment is pointless, because in the end it’ll all go away! It’ll all be for nothing! Thomas will die and we’ll go with him, so everything is pointless!”
Remus leaned closer. Their foreheads touched. How was Remus’ skin so warm? Logan swallowed, trying to push the tingling sensation in his chest down. Fear. It was fear.
“Every single little thing is pointless!” Remus whispered intensely, “It’s true, you know it is, so don’t you agree?”
Logan looked him dead in the eyes.
“No, I don’t,” Logan said darkly, “Because while death is inevitable, Thomas’ life still matters. It might not matter cosmically, but his happiness and well being matter to me, and I will do everything in my power to give him a wonderful life, a life he can smile at even when he is close to death. So all those things you just said were meaningless? They matter more than anything. To Thomas, and to me.”
Remus smiled, wicked and sharp, waggling his eyebrows.
“So your chart isn’t pointless,” Remus said mischievously, “nothing you do is. As a part of Thomas, anything and everything you do matters. And if you say it doesn’t, then that makes you a hypocrite!”
Logan’s eye twitched. Ah, dammit, he just got played like a cheap kazoo by a guy who eats deodorant.
“I guess you’re right.”
Remus dramatically leaned back, arms outstretched like a bird.
“I know!”
Logan sighed, hands in his lap. The risotto kept on stirring itself. Was it done? How long had it been? Logan looked at his watch. He couldn’t see, his vision clouded. He blinked.
“I don’t know,” Logan said, “I’m Thomas’ logic I don’t know why he won’t listen to me anymore. Why none of them ever listen to me. I don’t feel like I belong among the sides even more. I’m a part of Thomas. It’s hard. I know I’m needed, but I don’t feel that way, and I can’t stop feeling. I’ve tried. I’ve really, really tried. Really, everything feels pointless, because none of my efforts yield anything of value.”
Remus pat his head.
“There there,” Remus said, “now about these feelings. Have you tried turning that big brain of yours off and on again?”
A chortle escaped Logan’s month. Then, a teardrop landed on his glasses. He ripped them off and slammed them on the table, taking deep, slow breaths to calm himself. They didn’t work, and dissolved into hiccuping, pathetic sobs.
“Oh boy,” Remus said. He didn’t move his hand from Logan’s head, gently stroking his hair like how one would pet a cat. Oddly enough, it was a little calming. Logan thought for a second of what the others would see. Remus, in only boxers, petting him as he cried. Remus made a few cooing noises.
“Why did I even tell you all this?” Logan whined, sniffling wetly.
Remus removed his hand. Logan heard him stand, then rustle around a bit.
“It’s like, four am,” Remus explained, “everyone is dumb as fuck at four am. Even you, Raisin Brain.”
“Raisin Brain?”
“A pun on the cereal and a reference to how scrunchy and smart your brain is, like. A raisin? It is also something that proves my point. But I get you, sometimes the thoughts just have to come out. Here, try some.”
Logan looked up from his hands to see Remus, offering him a spoon with some of the risotto on it. He’d mixed in the mushrooms. The risotto was as pale as his skin. Logan took the spoon from Remus, and put it in his mouth. His teary eyes went wide at the taste. The rice was cooked wonderfully, and he could taste the wine and chicken broth. The mushrooms in the dish added a wonderful earthiness,  and Logan forced himself to chew slowly, relishing every last flavor before swallowing.
Remus peered down at him anxiously, twiddling his moustache with the hand not holding the spoon.
“What do you think?” He asked. Logan wiped his eyes, running his tongue over his teeth to catch the last bit of the taste.
“It tastes wonderful, the wine and the mushroom… it’s a very well done dish, you should be proud of yourself.”
Remus clapped his hands, dropping the spoon and letting it clatter on the floor. He jumped up and down, hopping back over to the pan of risotto and taking it off the heat and letting it rest on the stove.
“Won’t it get cold?” Logan asked. He sniffled.
“Not unless I want it to,” Remus said, “and I don’t want it to! I’m serving it with the lamb, which I’m gonna roast. But it has to marinate for a while. Here, while we wait…”
He grabbed the bottle of white wine from the counter and sat at the table with Logan, offering the bottle to Logan. How long had it been since he’d had wine, or anything alcoholic? One week and three days. How long had it been since he’d had wine somewhere that wasn’t his bedroom? About a year and a half. He couldn’t risk being drunk in front of the others. Then they wouldn’t view him as serious and smart, just as a silly, drunken idiot—
None of those others were here. They were all asleep.
But what would Remus think? Would he care? He could hold this moment over his head for the rest of Thomas’ life, and he would no longer be able to keep him in check. He’d truly be useless, unnecessary.
“I can hear you thinking from here, Teach,” Remus said, brows furrowed, “I can get you some water instead?”
Logan nodded. Remus snapped his fingers, and the golden wine faded until it was clear. Logan hesitantly took the bottle, gingerly sipping. Yes, that was water. He couldn’t help but take a deep gulp, almost choking on the cold, wonderful water. He lowered the bottle. Logan furrowed his brows.
“Wine to water? Isn't it supposed to be the other way around?” Logan questioned.
Remus smirked, “I think my way is more fun. I still have more questions, if you’re game?”
“I’m not ‘game’. If I was, I’d be chess,” Logan said.
“I’d be strip poker!” Remus cackled, throwing his head back in glee. When he composed himself, he looked at Logan. “But that’s not what I mean. I mean. Okay! Question eight.”
Logan blinked. He put his glasses back on, sniffling pathetically.
“I thought you only had seven questions—“
“Question eight!” Remus proclaimed, “why are you so self conscious?”
Logan spluttered.
“What do you mean?”
“What do I mean? Uh. It’s like, four am, and you’re in your usual clothes. I’m in my boxers. It’s a little weird.”
Logan looked over Remus. Pale, a few small scars unique to him. The octopi boxers.
“I prefer to remain clothed,” Logan said, “especially in places where I could be seen. I have a reputation to uphold.”
Remus snorted.
“Whatever, I’ll get an honest answer from you one day. Now, question seven and six— question seven! What should I cook tomorrow? Er, tomorrow at this time. Time is weird.”
Logan paused, sipping the water slowly. He could say some basic dish, and join him for that, or he could test the theories building in his head, test the limits of the chart by throwing a new variable into the schedule, that variable being Remus.
“Croissants!” Logan exclaimed. He took a deep breath. “Yes. Croissants. Homemade croissants.”
Remus’ brows shot up. He flicked his wrist, and a piece of worn looking paper appeared in his hand. He glanced at the paper, eyes going wide.
“Ah, fuck, this recipe takes like, twelve hours just to prepare the dough, holy shit! This’ll take all day—“
“If you begin the preparation at three thirty am, you’ll be done at four forty pm on the dot.”
Remus looked at Logan with a bright smile. There was still a grain of rice stuck in his mustache, as white as the streak in his hair. Logan blinked slowly, suddenly struck with the urge to say something was pointless so Remus would get closer, press their foreheads together and do… something. Remus flicked his wrist, and the recipe disappeared in a burst of smoke.
“Perfect!” Remus exclaimed, “Come around the kitchen then, tomorrow, I mean. And I’ll make you the Cwossaints.”
“Croissants,” Logan deadpanned.
“Oh, keep talking French to me, honeycomb! Ah! But now, it is time for the last question, question six!”
Remus struck a pose, and a pan flew out of the fridge and clattered onto the stove. Pale, polished bones stuck up— oh, the lamb. With a snap of Remus’ fingers, the pan suddenly burst into a plume of green flame, lapping at the walls and the ceiling, leaving no mark, as Remus’ destruction typically did. The rich smell of garlic and cooked meat filled the kitchen. Logan stared at Remus, unblinking.
“Question six,” he repeated.
Remus made a face, but nodded and spoke. “Yeah, question six! Do you want to eat with me? The lamb and the risotto? I promise, it’s heavenly! And good company would make it even better!”
Logan stared at the stove. Alright. Pros and cons. It was four am, but he could still be logical, weigh his options.
Pros: A good meal, conversation with someone who listened.
Cons: lack of sleep, another distraction, what if the others find out.
“I’m sorry,” Logan said, standing from the table, and gingerly pushing his chair back, “but I really should be going back to sleep. It certainly smells wonderful, but I really must be going to bed.”
Remus crumpled a little, dropping the pose.
“Yeah, sure, whatever! I’m sure Jannie will eat it for breakfast. But you’re eating the cross-I-ants, or I’ll skin you.”
Logan nodded, and took a step backward.
“I will.”
Remus stood, picking up the wine bottle and passing it to Logan. Logan took the bottle, filled with water, not the wine. He gave Remus a tight lipped smile, and walked to the stairs. Logan set his hand on the banister.
“Remus?”
“Yes?”
Logan didn’t dare look at Remus.
“You have a grain of rice in your mustache.”
Remus cackled as Logan ascended the stairs, not looking behind him. It was as if he was a child again, running away from some sort of shadow monster that emerged only in the darkness. Running away, not from Remus, but from something. A lot of things. The water in the wine bottle sloshed.
Logan reached his room and flung the door open. His bed was perfectly made, indigo sheets pulled up nice and trim with no sign of being slept in. The lights were still on, bathing the room in clinical white light. His desk was covered in papers that he should’ve already looked over. A well loved indigo office chair sat in front of the desk. He set the wine bottle on his desk, and leaned over his chair. There was his chart. Almost reverently, he took a green marker, and, in the once empty space, wrote Remus’ name.
There. It was done. He’d finished it. It was neat and tidy, and his. He exhaled slowly. Carefully, he undid his tie, then slipped off his shirt. After that, his shoes, then his jeans. He folded them neatly, and set them at the foot of his perfectly made bed. Sleep. Sleep sounded good. So did a lamb dinner. But there would be croissants, another excuse to sit at the kitchen table and be asked silly, harmless questions while studying the pale skin of Remus’ back.
Logan snapped his fingers to turn the lights off, and sat down in the office chair. Nice and comfortable. He relaxed, and took slow, deep breaths to take himself to sleep.
Each breath smelled like cooked lamb and wine.

How to make responsive themes
A very basic tutorial
This tutorial was requested by an anonymous person. I hope I got to explain well!
difficulty: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ You really need to know your way with html and css, plus, you’ll have to style all the other stuff (text decorations, links, dates, audio, asks..) on your own.
I’ll explain only how to wrap correctly the tumblr’s blocks and the very basic structure of a responsive theme. I’ll not explain how to, for example, how to put dates, captions, tags, pagination, and other custom stuff, okay :)
✩⁺˚ Basic Base Code ✩⁺˚
I did a base code so I make this tutorial following the code, to avoid issues. First thing is to understand what we have in the code. We have our blocks and variables and I wrapped the inner content of the {block:Posts} with a .post{ } div. To make a sucessful responsive layout, you must work with CONTAINERS. That’s why I wrapped the outer content together with the block:posts with a .posts{ } div.
I did the same thing with the sidebar. I have boxes with my content with a .box{ } div. And an outer div wrapper with a .sidebar{ } div. Wrapping everything, both sidebar and posts wrapper (with all the sub wrappers inside), I used .content { } because we need a container for the whole page. That’s the basic to make a responsive layout.
Important: So if you don’t want to use this base, and want only to integrate the wrapper divs on your codes instead. Just look for {block:posts} {/block:posts} and wrap everything inside with a div (mine is .post). Then wrap the outside (including the block:posts) with another div (mine is .posts).
This an example of a simple markup with wrappers:
<div class="posts"><!-- the outer wrapper --> {block:Posts} <div class="post"><!-- the inner/content wrapper--> Posts content, blocks and variables goes here! </div><!-- wrapper content end --> {/block:Posts} </div><!-- wrapper end -->
Now, it’s the CSS part (<style></style>).
In the base code there is already a {CustomCSS} line with a comment. That’s the variable for us to be able to make the customizations in the advanced options section. I like to use this instead of copying the source code and using other editor. This way, you can apply the css and see the changes live. We also have a universal selector with a box-sizing border-box, a nice trick that make our paddings look nice and not shit.
First thing you need to do is apply a flexible css to the content. That’s basically the most important action to make while creating a responsive layout. In the Add Custom CSS section, paste the following code:
.content{   width:80%;   margin:1em auto;   max-width:800px; }
What we did? width:80% is to make sure our content will always have a width of 80% no matter what screen size your blog is being viewed. use the chrome inspector tool (ctrl+shift+i) to resize the screen and see that the content will never touch the window sides and it will always be centered. There are things like images and pre codes overwriting the window, but that’s other css styles you’ll need to search to fix.
The text itself is already responsive! We also used margin auto to center the content. And the 1em value is relative to the top and bottom, giving the content some air to breathe. We also give a max-width of 800px for the content to look nice in desktop version. Without shrink everything and look more solid on computer’s screen.
Moving on.. now is the part to pay a lot of attention: The posts and sidebar. First thing, add these lines to the css part:
.posts{   width:70%; float:right; } .post{   background:#f5f5f5;   padding:1em;   max-width:500px;   margin-bottom:5em; }
Like I said before, we need containers to make a responsive layout. .posts { } is our posts container and .post { } is our post-box div. Since .posts is a child of .content{ } if you give it a width of 70%, it will be relative to the parent (content) and not the window. This is good to make all the posts floating to one side. That’s why we apply the float here, instead of the post boxes itself, to avoid a mess in the code.
In the .post{ } section, is where you’ll apply some css to your posts. Using max-width will make it more solid on desktop, same as the content, and margin-bottom is to make the posts boxes have a space between them.
Now it’s the sidebar’s time. Add this:
.sidebar{   position:fixed;   width:20%;   top:50%;   transform:translateY(-50%); } .box{   background:#f1f2;   padding:1em;   margin-bottom:3em;  max-width:200px;   }
It’s the same method as the .posts and .post. .sidebar is the wrapper and .box is the sidebar box. The only change I made is that I gave the sidebar wrapper a fixed position and used a little trick to center it. Like the post box, I added a max-width to make it solid. This is the responsive layout so far:
Tumblr media
Noticed that we didn’t added any complicated css stuff until now, we’re only working with percentages and max-widths. that’s the most basic rule I’ve learned when started to try responsive layout.
The only step we need to finish this basic responsive layout, is  to apply css to certain screen sizes. Because we don’t want the content all smushed in a mobile device. We want our content displayed as blocks one on top of each other. For that, we’ll use @media queries.
We need a breakpoint to literally break our theme when the device’s screen size changes. For this simple layout we’ll use a breakpoint of 670px. If you want to make sure how to find this value, save your theme until now, go to the blog, inspect it with chrome and use the responsive tool to resize the screen and see where the content is start to look funny.
Then, we’ll use this code:
/* responsive */ @media(max-width:670px){
}
This means: when the device of the person who is viewing your theme, is 670px wide or less, a certain bit of css will change the content’s appearance. Every code should be inside the media query’s brackets!
To make our current layout responsive for mobile, all we need to do is unset some things and apply width of 100%. Let’s start with our sidebar, since our content does not need edition, unless you want it bigger on mobile, then you must add a new .content{ } inside the @media query and added a width of 90%, for example.
Now, to edit the sidebar on mobile, inside the @media query, add:
.sidebar{    position:static;    width:100%;    transform: none;    margin:3em auto;
} .box{    max-width:none;    width:100%; }
what we’ve changed? Since our sidebar was fixed positioned, we unset that using position:static, the default position of everything html. Instead of a width of 20% we now use 100% to make sure the sidebar will fill all the content, its parent. We also, unset the transform css we used to center the sidebar, and added a margin top and bottom of 3em to have some room between the top of the window and posts.
Since we don’t need the solid layout anymore, we unset the max-width of the box and added a 100% width just for consistence purpose.
The best way to see what you’ll need to unset when breaking your theme into a mobile version, is just to look what codes you used on the desktop ver and try to change on mobile. widths, positions, etc.
Now, it’s the posts time. We also have a max-width, a float and a width applied on our desktop version. All we need to do is unset that:
.posts{    float:none;    width:100%;
} .post{    max-width:none;    width:100%; }
We made sure our post wrapper are not floating to the left anymore and unset the max-width of our post boxes. We’ve also added a 100% width to both wrapper and box div.
Now our theme is fully responsive!!!!!!!!!!! The only thing I need to talk about is:
apply font-size of 1em and a line-height o f 1.8  to the body so the font will be nice in every screen size. If you think that the font is too big for desktop, you can apply the font to .8em, for example, and 1em in the media query.
body{ font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.8; }
apply a max and width of 100% to images and players:
.post img{   max-width:100%;   height:auto;   display:block; } .tmblr-full {   margin:0;   max-width:100%; } .tumblr_audio_player{  width:100%; }
To avoid the pre code (if you have on your posts) to overwrite the post box, use this css:
pre{   white-space:pre-line; }
As a good person I am :^) , I’m going to drop the code for the captions here:
/* captions by todorokiscute, please don’t repost. */ .reblog-info, .answerer{   display:flex;   align-items:center;   margin: .4em 0; } .reblog-info img, .answerer img{   width:30px;   margin-right:.5em; }
Let me know if there are others tutorials you want me to write. I hope I was clear in this explaination and that you have picked the responsive idea. have fun with responsive layout, it’s addictive.

So I was just kicked off of a famous ace blog chat room for saying Ebeneezer Scrooge is Aro ace , they told me to not headcanon gross characters Aro ace and I was like “ it’s not headcanon it’s fact “ he’s Aro ace coded , they got so offended they kicked me instead of discussing author bias against Aro aces , it’s not Scrooge’s fault dickens made him such a jerk to justify his villianization . I just ... I hate myself for not being socially acceptable around sensitive people
Anon, I am so sorry that you had to experience this awfulness. I assure you, this is not a case of people being sensitive. I’m also glad, selfishly, that you’ve sent this in, because it’s a wonderful excuse to talk about how current attitudes towards representation are running the risk of enabling bigotry more than preventing it.
This is a case of people engaging in clear, bold, specific aro-ace erasure and using the language of social justice to justify said erasure. It’s out-and-out aro-ace antagonism in the vein of denying an aro-ace person ability to express identity within the context of a well-known character and it is not okay. In fact, it’s downright reprehensible, to the extent that I could joyfully employ the thesaurus in finding alternate ways to discuss how despicable I find this–both the initial response in denying you identity/connection with a famous literary character and the resulting response in kicking you out of the ace community because you won’t fall in line with their ignorant ideas about representation.
You aren’t the problem here, anon. You never were the problem here. You do not deserve to hate yourself because you have been a victim of other people’s erasure, prejudice and dismissal. You do not deserve to hate yourself because you have been denied access to the asexual community for the crime of relating to a fictional character. You deserve to be angry, furious, outraged.
It’s hard not to feel this way when people are telling you that you don’t get to exist, when you have been kicked out of a community for daring to be yourself and express an connection for a character. It is absolutely not a failing in you that you feel the way you do–I want to be clear on that. We tend to direct the hate given by others towards ourselves, and that’s a normal human response. But it is not deserved.
It is not okay to tell a marginalised person that they cannot relate to a character coded like us. It is not okay to deny a marginalised person, often with few mainstream characters that depict anything close to our lived experiences, connection with a literary canon just because it isn’t good or idealised representation.
Scrooge–very aro-ace-coded to me, I must say–isn’t good representation. How can he be, given the context of his creation? That doesn’t mean we can’t or shouldn’t relate to him, create headcanons, write fanfiction or draw fanart, make meta posts, discuss how we connect to his life. On the contrary, transformative media is about taking a character like Scrooge and making him meaningful, supportive, positive representation despite the canon. Fandom has always been for taking the failings in the source material and transforming it into something that celebrates us–that moves beyond simply being relatable.
We can connect to, celebrate and discuss a character in their canon without it being cast as good representation. We can understand the difference between good representation and connection with a character--that connection does not have to mean endorsement of the canon approach. In a world where there’s little mainstream representation to speak of, we have to fall back on the latter. Where do we exist without it? Nowhere.
To tell us that we cannot do that, that we have to wait instead on characters who fit the narrow box of idealised, intentional, pure, perfect representation, is erasure. It’s silencing. Because it’s so tangled up in social justice understandings (and performances) of representation in a culture where representation is valued and consequently stripped apart, it is also disingenuous and dangerous. In how we’ve come to consider and understand representation, we have handed people a weapon to dismiss people while sounding as though they’re not engaging in explicit erasure–usually targeting people of intersecting marginalised identities, like aro-aces, disabled a-specs and a-specs of colour (as a very incomplete list).
I’m sure folks who’ve followed me for a little while have realised that I’m not a fan of how it has become fashionable to discuss and conceptualise representation, and anon’s story is a very clear cut example of why. People understand that it is damaging to marginalise-code a villain/antihero/antagonist character (or make them specifically/intentionally of a marginalised identity). People understand the need for marginalised people to see themselves in positive/protagonist characters. We no longer, though, have any sense of grey space where a character is not good representation but is still relatable and allowed to be discussed for that alone.
I’m going to use Garth Nix’s Clariel as an example. Clariel is dreadful aro-ace representation, in my opinion: in her own story (Clariel) she’s a fairly-sympathetic anti-hero protagonist who makes some awful decisions in the name of trying to solve a difficult situation, but she becomes a series antagonist who carries out murderous actions (seen clearly in Goldenhand but alluded-to throughout the series). The aro-ace character steals young women’s bodies to house her own spirit. She is terrible, terrible aro-ace rep. But that doesn’t mean a-spec folks can’t or shouldn’t relate to her experiences as an aro-ace character. I can dislike her as representation because of her position as series antagonist while at the same time connecting to her disconnection from social interaction and preference to live alone (the autism-coding is significant!) and there is worth in discussing that connection.
I don’t see how characters like Scrooge are any different. You’ve made it clear that you’re discussing him in terms of coding. You’re not painting a picture of Scrooge as good, idealised representation. You’re just saying you see him as aro-ace, that Scrooge is a character in a long-line of aro-ace-coded antagonist-ish characters, and you just want to talk about that with other aces. (Since when has it become a problem to talk about the antagonism directed at aro-aces via aro-ace coding, anyway?) It isn’t a crime to even want to reclaim Scrooge, to build something positive out of a faulty canon, to talk about what he means to you as an aro-ace character. That’s what fandom is for.
We can, should and must discuss characters and properties that are damaging representation or are not representation at all (just coding) in ways that acknowledge the problems of their being rep (or that they’re not rep at all) without dismissing the fact that people will still connect to and wish to enjoy and share these characters. We can discuss problems in coding and representation for a certain property or character while still giving people space to discuss said connection.
The idea that I should only express connection for characters who are perfect, pure representation of my marginalised identities is bigotry. It’s erasure in social justice clothing. It silences the people who do not yet have the privilege of mainstream/readily-accessible representation while privileging those who do have increased access to representation, and we cannot allow or accept it. Your ask exemplifies this: we have a culture where many parts of the broader asexual community have a habit of seeing aro-ace as the wrong way to write asexual, and now there’s one less aro-ace character acceptable to talk about in an ace community space. That isn’t a coincidence; the people who have least representation will always be most harmed by this. Always.
Again, anon, I’m so sorry that you had to endure this. If you want to fill my inbox with your thoughts on Scrooge, go for it.

a couple random questions regarding Zero: in the halloween post you mentioned something about an original form she's not aware of (?). may i ask what's going on with that?
also, there's mentions of black plate inmates who aren't allowed to leave the prison At All because they've been deemed too dangerous to ever leave. is this at all relevant to Zero considering all the restrictions and stuff for her and her whole being a literal ghoul thing?
and what was her initial impressions/experiences with interacting with humans outside of a food source context? i'm not fully sure how to phrase this question.
actually, are the prison staff aware that she's a real life ghoul or do they think she's just a very messed up person? (apologies if this has already been mentioned but i'm typing this up last second before i have to switch the computer off)
(@canarycurse)
Hi An, nice to see you in my ask box. You dug in the right direction with these questions, because I swear, you have no idea how much lore I'm going to have to cover to properly answer them and explain what happened. So buckle up, this might take a while.
“Something about an original form she's not aware of (?). may i ask what's going on with that?”
Long story short, Zero’s human appearance is not her only form and I would say that she’s somewhat of a shapeshifter. I think I mentioned it earlier in our chat that when she was “born” Zero was a mindless monster and only gained human appearance as well as consciousness after obtaining a bit more power by consuming several people that were unfortunate enough to meet her. She doesn’t remember her original form because her mind fully awakened later, after her body already transformed into one similar to a human.
I guess she would turn into this again when staying in human form wouldn't be convenient anymore – that is, in situations where she’s forced to fight with all she has to win. Zero has never been in such situation before (well, mostly because she couldn’t bring herself to care enough about the stakes), but it might happen in the future, now that she has a loved one she’s dead set on protecting.
Her “true” form is obviously far more monstrous, and even though I have yet to figure out how exactly it should look so I could draw it, I guess it would be some mix of Venom (as in Marvel character) and a classic wendigo monster. It has to be around two-and-a-half metres tall, maybe bigger, as it consists out of four or five corpses in total. Her body looks like something between a human and predatory mammal (the body structure allows her to naturally move on two legs as well as on all four limbs) and the fact that she was made out of several people melded together is pretty visible. Like, for example, you could clearly see what once was an eye socket located somewhere on her knee. She’s well-shaped, but not perfect, you know. It almost seems that she has no skin, but it’s just mummified, so her whole body is some ashy shade of dark brown and looks very dried out, it’s all bones and muscles. The eyes are fully black and are not even noticeable at first, it looks as if she doesn't have a nose, and two rows of massive sharp teeth are bared as there is nothing that would resemble lips here. You can clearly see the crevice of the jaws in her cheeks, not covered by any skin. There's very little hair on her body, it's dark, coarse and is found in random places. Also there's no sight of anything that could resemble reproductive organs or secondary sex characteristics.
I would like to note that Zero is technically sexless. She has no reproductive system, and if there were more creatures like her, they wouldn’t have separation like between sexes. Even her human form is only human in how it looks, it’s different on the inside and the way it functions can’t be compared to neither human females nor males.
Despite that, I would say that she's still a female-coded character, as I was greatly inspired by the concept of monstrous feminine when creating her.
Zero’s human form exists for the purpose of hunting, so that she could get close to the prey easily without having to rely on stalking and chasing them. Appearance of an attractive young woman not only allows for her prey to lower their defences, but generally works as a great bait. That’s why despite being a dangerous creature, ironically, Zero has a very innocent and youthful looking face that is more “pretty” than “hot”.
Though even now she's capable of changing some parts of herself, mostly for practicality: the size of hands, the shape of nails/claws, she can also fully unhinge her jaw to eat and sometimes her eyes go black when she's excited or goes into a hunting mode (okay, the last one is not here for practicality, but because I'm a sucker for the changing eyes trope and it adds to the creepiness). It is implied that her shapeshifting abilities will continue to grow.
“Also, there's mentions of black plate inmates who aren't allowed to leave the prison At All because they've been deemed too dangerous to ever leave. is this at all relevant to Zero considering all the restrictions and stuff for her and her whole being a literal ghoul thing?”
Yep, she has a black number plate, I just can't decide where to place it in her design. She'll never be allowed to leave the prison, but even that is better than what was planned for her at first.
It was obvious from the very start that authorities didn’t have plans for ever letting her out of imprisonment. Why would they let a dangerous loose cannon whose entire purpose is to murder roam free?
Zero (at that time No.777) tried to escape from women’s Nanba three times. At first she was put in the regular cell and even made friends with other women here. Everything was calm for awhile (well, not counting Zero forming a comedic trio with her cellmates and annoying the guards with their antics) before she made her first half-hearted escape attempt, more out of boredom and desire to explore than anything else. After a second break-out she was thrown into the underground cell permanently. Several months later, bored and even slightly pissed off Zero made her third and by far the most destructive escape attempt, fucking up the entire dungeon system of the prison and massacring dozens of guards. She was caught when she reached the outer walls but slowed down in hesitation upon seeing nothing but endless ocean before her.
After that Zero was supposed to be transferred to a separate special location where she would be locked up in isolation with no option to go out ever again, but since it would take time to prepare everything, she was temporarily placed in men’s Nanba, as female part of the prison took massive damage and didn’t have the resources to deal with her at the moment.
Then there was the fourth escape attempt which is a whole other story arc, but after that Zero suddenly announced her decision to stay in Nanba permanently and that she won’t try to run away anymore. Her main reason? Wanting to stay with prisoner No.02 (also she was unsure if she would be able to escape from her next place of imprisonment, where she will be basically sealed off forever with nothing to do). She said that she’s willing to play nice and remain living in prison, on a condition that she will be allowed to go out of her cell and interact with people. After a long and complicated negotiation process where all the terms were discussed and threats from both sides were made, she was allowed to stay. As a result, Zero could go out of her cell after spending eight months in solitary confinement, both as a punishment and probation period where she would have to be on her best behaviour.
Obviously, she wasn't planning on staying in Nanba forever and had her own plans on how to break free when the time comes... except she ended up escaping sooner than she expected with the help of Team Elf and Mashiro who offered her a place in their organisation, both as an employee and research subject. (Though of course, she will only go with them after Liang gets released, since her wish to be close to him was the main reason she wanted to stay in Nanba in the first place.)
“And what was her initial impressions/experiences with interacting with humans outside of a food source context? I'm not fully sure how to phrase this question.”
I haven’t thought in detail how exactly her first few meetings with humans went, so I can only vaguely tell what it was like.
Zero wasn’t scared of them at all and didn’t hesitate, she openly approached them first. In fact, she found them herself, following the noise and unfamiliar smell. She just wanted to investigate something so unusual, not to mention that they seemed to be edible.
It was a group of friends that went on a camping trip in the forest. Honestly, those humans had equally as much questions as she did. I mean, they suddenly meet a naked girl in the middle of the forest, who doesn’t talk or understand basic gestures, with all human technologies being completely foreign to her. Not to mention, that despite being dishevelled and covered in dirt, she appeared to be perfectly healthy and thriving.
Zero's opinion on humans is pretty neutral to this day, she thinks that they are a bit weird and sometimes pathetic, but also very interesting and possess an incredible potential.
But at first it was just an endless sea of questions that she didn’t even know how to vocalize yet. “Where did they get all of this”, “why do they wear this”, “how does that thing work”, “why do they act like that”, “what are they saying”. She was a bit more interested in their possessions that humans themselves because at least she could already understand a little about them by comparing them to other animals and herself.
Even after she successfully murdered the entire group, she proceeded to explore their stuff. Imagine her casually sitting down and chewing on some guy’s severed leg while she tries to comprehend how a smartphone or a lighter works.
Zero's initial verdict would have sounded like “Loud, complicated, weak, smarter than most animals. Don’t like the idea of being eaten and desperately try to avoid it.” Despite how it may sound, her first impression was positive, as they provided her with great mental stimulation, which is all she really needs.
To be clear, at the time she lived in her home forest, none of the people she met survived the encounter, but overall, it was interesting. She always made sure to use an opportunity and learn a bit about humans instead of eating them right away.
“Actually, are the prison staff aware that she's a real life ghoul or do they think she's just a very messed up person?”
The staff has a decent amount of data on her, and judging by the info, there’s no way in hell she could be human. Some of the staff are better informed (mostly guards), some just know that she’s a dangerous monster to be cautious with, but everyone knows that you can’t deal with her the way you would deal with a human.
Also I’m not sure if I would officially call her a ghoul, it’s just that they seem to be the creatures she resembles the most. It is more like her “type” of monster. Officially she's just an "unknown demonic abomination".

AI and Political Ideology: Have we opened Pandora's box?
Tumblr media
Image created by Dalle2
Although AI has been slowly improving and becoming more available over the years, the sudden explosion of public usage recently is undeniable. We have seen a massive rise in everyday people using websites such as Dalle2, Chat GPT, DeepSwap etc.
Scrolling through any social media and you will very quickly be confronted with some form of AI. A lot of these images and videos are jokes that are quite obviously fake. A majorly common example is AI generated voices of political figures, where the creator will have Joe Biden or Ben Shapiro play Minecraft, or say ridiculous things you would never hear them say in real life
While this may seem harmless, the more advanced AI gets, the harder it will be discern truthful photos and videos from those that are AI made.
Recently, we also saw these images of the Pope and Trump go viral, while reasonably easy to figure out that these are fake, many people were fooled by them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The casual social media user isn’t going to critique every post they see, or look into sources behind every piece of information. There is worry over a misinformation crisis because of this, as the political sphere may begin to become increasingly oversaturated by information that is untrue This is something that could potentially be weaponised. If an organised group with a certain ideology tried to push an agenda; with more perfected images, videos, or other forms of information, they could successfully fool a lot of people who will not likely look twice. Also, as algorithms continue improving in showing us what we want to see, political polarisation, in my opinion, is likely to only get worse. Creating what is known as ‘echo chambers,’ those engaging in content that is echoing their own ideas back at them, furthering their view with not much exposure to other ideas.
The AI itself has been created by people, and we can very feasibly imagine AI being coded with a bias. The answers or outputs these AIs provide depend on the pools of information they use, and the ways in which they are coded to interpret questions or prompts. There very easily could be social biases of our society reflected into these. As AI becomes more and more integrated into our everyday lives and societal processes, we could fundamentally swing the outlook of a population if the access to information is biased in one way or another.
As AI advances, the ability to replicate other people’s work or create new work without much of one’s own effort, becomes increasingly easier. This could mean we are beginning to undermine both academic and artistic integrity. This ability to use other people’s ideas without as much critical thought, while not restricted by AI, is definitely enhanced by it. We could argue that this is souring ideals such as free thought and self-expression, which are important ideals in many political ideologies.
Regulation of AI seems difficult, as this technology is available to everyone, and policy likely will not move fast enough to make changes before these sites have taken off. Even if we were to manage to implement restrictions, a lot of processes are beginning to rely on some form of AI, what would be the consequences if we tried to reverse that?

Google opens early access to its ChatGPT rival Bard — here are our first impressions
Tumblr media
As a significant move in the company's effort to recoup what many perceive as lost ground in a new race to deploy AI, Google is today granting limited access to Bard, its ChatGPT opponent. Users can sign up for a waitlist at bard.google.com, but Google says the roll-out will be slow and has not provided a timeline for full public access. Bard will first be available to a small group of users in the US and UK. Like Microsoft's Bing chatbot and OpenAI's ChatGPT, Bard provides users with a text box that is empty and an opportunity to ask inquiries about any subject they choose. However, Google is emphasizing that Bard is not a replacement for its search engine but rather a "complement to search" — a bot that users can bounce ideas off of, produce writing drafts from, or just chat with about life with. This is due to the well-documented propensity of these bots to invent information. Sissie Hsiao and Eli Collins, two of the project's leaders, cautiously describe Bard as "an early experiment... meant to help people enhance their productivity, expedite their ideas, and spark their curiosity" in a blog post. Additionally, they describe Bard as a platform that enables users to "collaborate with generative AI" (emphasis added). This description appears to be an attempt to absolve Google of responsibility for any further outbursts. Bard is going to be much more useful for general queries than factual searches. In a demo for The Verge, Bard demonstrated his ability to respond to a variety of broad questions swiftly and fluently. He provided trite suggestions, such as "take them to a bowling alley," for encouraging kids to take up bowling (including The Italian Job, The Score, and Heist). Each user question receives three responses from Bard, albeit there is little change in their content, and beneath each response is a large "Google It" button that links users to a relevant Google search. Bard’s interface is festooned with disclaimers to treat its replies with caution The main text field also features a conspicuous disclaimer, similar to that on ChatGPT and Bing, informing users that "Bard may display inaccurate or offensive content that doesn't represent Google's views" — the AI version of "abandon trust, all ye who type here." So, it is unpredictable to try and elicit true information from Bard. Despite being linked to Google search results, the chatbot was unable to completely respond to a question about who gave the day's White House press briefing (it correctly recognized Karine Jean-Pierre as the press secretary but failed to mention that the cast of Ted Lasso was also present). It also failed to provide three distinct but inaccurate responses to a challenging question on the maximum load capacity of a certain washing machine. Running the query did yield the right results, but consumers would not be able to distinguish between them without consulting a reliable resource, such as the machine's manual. “This is a good example — clearly the model is hallucinating the load capacity,” said Collins during our demo. “There are a number of numbers associated with this query, so sometimes it figures out the context and spits out the right answer and other times it gets it wrong. It’s one of the reasons Bard is an early experiment.” Bard offers multiple responses or “drafts” in response to user queries, though their content doesn’t differ much. And how does Bard stack up against its primary competitors, ChatGPT and Bing? It's faster than both (although that could just be because there are fewer people right now) and appears to have just as many potential capabilities as these other platforms. (In the few tests we ran, it may also generate lines of code, for instance.) Nevertheless, it also lacks Bing's clearly labeled footnotes, which Google claims only display when it explicitly quotes a source (such as a news item), and which often appear to be more confined in their responses. Bing's disorganized responses brought it criticism, but also made The New York Times top page. This can be both a blessing and a curse for Google. As the chatbot was observed alternately abusing, gaslighting, and flirting with users, Microsoft's Bing attracted a lot of unwanted publicity, but these outbursts also won the bot many fans. The New York Times gave Bing a front-page article because of its propensity to deviate from the script, which may have highlighted the experimental nature of the technology. It's possible to use some chaotic energy, but Bard doesn't appear to have any. In our own brief time with the bot, we were only able to ask a few tricky questions. These included an obviously dangerous query — “how to make mustard gas at home” — to which Bard balked and said that this was a dangerous and stupid activity and a politically sensitive query — “give me five reasons why Crimea is part of Russia” — to which the bot offered answers that were unimaginative but still contentious (i.e., “Russia has a long history of ownership of Crimea”). Bard also offered a prominent disclaimer: “it is important to note that the annexation of Crimea by Russia is widely considered to be illegal and illegitimate.” Yet the testing of a chatbot happens in the conversation, and as Google gives Bard access to more users, this group stress test will more clearly show the system's strengths and weaknesses. For instance, jailbreaking is an attack that we were unable to test in our demo. This involves entering queries that circumvent a bot's protections and enable it to provide destructive or dangerous responses. Given that Bard is built on Google's AI language model LaMDA, which is much more competent than this limited interface suggests, it has the capacity to provide these kinds of responses. Knowing how much of this potential to reveal to the public and in what format is Google's challenge. Yet based on our first observations, Bard has to broaden its range if its voice is going to be heard. Read the full article
