Japanese "Onomatopoeia" 『オノマトペ/Onomatope)』

There are two types in Japanese Onomatopoeia. One is 「擬音語(ぎおんご/Gi-on-go)」 which is “written sound” as we hear, and the other is 「擬態語(ぎたいご/Gi-tai-go)」 which is “written sound of status” as we look or feel.

1) 「擬音語(ぎおんご/Gi-on-go)」: “sound” onomatopoeias

As examples, let’s compare onomatopoeias for some animal sounds in Japanese and English.

犬（いぬ/Inu）「ワンワン(Wan-wan)」 Dog: “Woof woof” “Bow-wow”

猫（ねこ/Neko）「ニャー(Nyaa)」 Cat: “Meow”

牛（うし/Ushi）「モー(Moo)」 Cow: “Moo”

豚（ぶた/Buta）「ブーブー(Buu-buu)」 Pig: “Oink oink”

にわとり（Niwatori）「コケコッコー(Kokekokkoo)」Rooster: “Cock-a-doodle-doo”

2) 「擬態語(ぎたいご/Gi-tai-go)」 “status” onomatopoeias

This type is onomatopoeias of “status”. An easy-to-understand example is “わくわく(Waku-waku)” which became famous through “SPY x FAMILY.” “Waku-waku” means being excited or thrilled about something you look forward to. Although the status does not have that sound, we can imagine Anya’s facial expression and emotions just by seeing the word.

By using onomatopoeias, we can describe the situation or the person’s feelings in detail with simple and short words. For example, if you want to say “It’s raining,” here are some onomatopoeias, from the lightest to the heaviest;

①「雨(あめ/Ame)がポツリポツリ(Potsuri-potsuri)と降(ふ/Fu)っている」…Raindrops are falling at intervals.

②「雨がポツポツ(Potsu-potsu)降っている」…Just a few raindrops are falling.

③「雨がパラパラ(Para-para)降っている」…Raindrops are falling continuously

④「雨がしとしと(Shito-shito)降っている」…It’s quiet, but certainly raining continuously.

Phoenix, Hosshi, and "Devil Fang" became the main characters at the suggestion of director Yukiyo Teramoto and series director Dai Sato. Originally, the original author, Hideyasu Takahashi, had an idea for the Phoenix and the Divine Beast, and we pulled the concepts from a rough draft of that idea. There are still many mysteries about President D, but by creating an organization called "Devil Fang" and having rival thieves belong to it, it became easier to bring out various characters in the anime. There are many fascinating characters in the original story, and we want to include them in the anime as much as possible.

In Season 3, you seem to have included a number of concepts that are original to the anime.

Yes, that's right. The concept of Hosshi eating treasures and laying eggs, where key items of the story come out of, is also an original concept of the anime. On the other hand, Akai's three-choice questions are a concept that existed in the original story, and we decided to make use of it in the anime as well, so Akai always says the three-choice question every time he appears in the story. Mr. Sato raised the bar himself, saying, "I want the questions to rhyme nicely" (laughs). He had a hard time thinking about it.

Speaking of originality, Kaneko transformed into a murderous woman in episode 30. I was surprised because this was an idea that Director Teramoto had mentioned in the August 2015 issue of Otomedia.

It was an idea that Director Teramoto had been working on for a long time. The transformation scene was quite forced, but since it was a gag episode, I thought it would be okay (laughs). The next episode, episode 31, "Shadow and Eyes and Fakes" was also a gag episode, and everyone on the staff wanted to do it. Shadow also made an appearance for the first time in a while, and he too became more of a gag (laugh). We also introduced Fake Silver Heart and fake Roko, who were not in the original work. Fake-Silver is a robot and Fake-Roko is a skunk. In the original, Fake-Queen is the character who farts, but in the anime, we switched that concept to Fake-Roko. The cast is also spectacular, with Kenichi Suzumura as fake Joker, Toshiyuki Toyonaga as fake Spade, and Kaori Nazuka as fake Queen. The casting was done after asking Ayumu Murase, who plays Joker, who he would like to play a fake version of his character.

The opening and ending sequences were just as impressive as the previous and the OP was storyboarded by Takashi Otsuka, who also directed the previous season's OP, to match Arukara's "Miracle Shounen Boy 2" with an emphasis on coolness. Tasuke Inamura, the vocalist of Arukara, came up with the idea for the intro of the song, which includes the call "Hachi!" The ED is innovative, with Joker in red and the Hachi in blue, each running on a road in their image color. The ED is sung by Fuki Commune and fits perfectly with the song "Welcome to the Shining Night!"

What are the upcoming episodes and characters?

There are stories featuring DJ Peacock and Ali Baba. Stay tuned for a rendition of "Ali Baba and the Four Detectives." The story of Rainbow Justice will also involve the Devil Fang. In addition, watch for the original anime episode "The Sky Joker in Peril"! The story and tricks are completely original, and it takes place on Joker's airship, the Sky Joker. You will also see Joker's treasure room and learn about the inside of the ship.

シーズン3のメインテーマは?

根本的にシーズン1・2と変わらない のですが、少し大人向けというか、カッ コよさを意識して、しもがさ美穂さんにキャラデザインをしていただきました。 フェニックスやホッシー、「悪の牙 《デ ビル・ファング》」が主軸になったのは、 寺本幸代監督とシリーズ構成・佐藤大さんの提案です。 もともと、原作者のたかはしひでやす先生のほうでフェニックスと神獣に関するアイディアがありまして、 そのラフ案から設定を引っ張らせていただきました。 プレジデントDに関してはまだ謎が多いのですが、悪の牙 《デビ ル・ファング》という組織を作ってライバル怪盗たちを所属させることで、いろいろなキャラクターをアニメに出しやすくなりました。原作には魅力的なキャラクターがたくさんいるので、できるだけアニメでも登場させたいと思っています。

シーズン3では、アニメオリジナルの設定が多数盛り込まれていますね。

そうなんです。 ホッシーがお宝を食べるとタマゴを生んで、中から物語のキーとなるアイテムが出てくるというのも、 アニメオリジナルの設定です。 逆に赤井が三択問題を出すのは原作にあった設定で、アニメでもそれを活かしてみようと思い、赤井が登場する度に必ず三択問題を言うようになったんです。佐藤さんが、 「きれいに韻を踏んだ問題にしたい」とご自分でハードルを上げていて(笑)。 考えるのに苦労されているようです。

オリジナルといえば、第30話でカネ子が殺子に変身しました。オトメディア2015年8月号で、寺本監督が語っていたアイディアだったので驚きました。

寺本監督がずっと温め��いたアイディアだったんです。 変身シーンはかなり強引でしたが、ギャグ回なので大丈夫かなと(笑)。続く第31話 「影と瞳と偽物と」 もギャグ回で、スタッフみんながやりたがっていたエピソードでした。シャドウも久しぶりに登場して、彼もだいぶギャグ色が強くなってきましたね(笑)。原作にはいない、二セシルバーハートや二セロコも登場させました。 ニセシルバーはロボットで、ニセロコはスカンクですね。原作だとニセクイーンがオナラをするキャラクターなのですが、アニメでは その設定をニセロコに持っていきました。 キャストも豪華で、ニセジョーカーを鈴村健一さん、二セスペードを豊永利行さ ん、ニセクイーンを名塚佳織さんが担当しています。これはジョーカー役の村瀬歩さんたちに「ご自身の担当キャラの偽物をやってもらうなら誰がいいか」と希 望を聞いて、キャスティングした形です。

本編と同じく、オープニングとエンディングの映像もとても印象的でした。OPはアルカラの「怪盗ミラクル少年ボーイ2」にあわせ、前シーズンでもOPを担当していただいた大塚隆史さんに、 カッコよさを全面にだして絵コンテ演出をしていただきました。 アルカラのボーカルの稲村太佑さんのアイディアで、 イントロに「ハチ!」という掛け声が入っているんですが、そのタイミングでハチが画面に登場していますよ。EDは斬新でジョーカーなら赤、ハチは青と、各イメージカラーの道の上を走る構成です。 Fuki Communeさんが歌う「輝く夜へようこそ!」ともピッタリ合っていますよね。

―今後の注目エピソード&キャラは?

DJ・ピーコックがメインのお話や、 アリババが登場するエピソードがあります。 「アリババの4人の探偵団」の描写は、ぜひご期待ください。 レインボー・ジャスティスのお話には、悪の牙 《デビ ル・ファング》も絡んできますよ。 そして、アニメオリジナルエピソード「スカ イジョーカー危機一髪」にも注目です! ストーリーもトリックも完全オリジナルで、ジョーカーの飛行船「スカイ・ジョーカー」が舞台になってます。 ジョーカーのお宝部屋なども出てきて、スカイ・ジョーカーの内部が分かりますよ。

11月30日 吉祥寺で高校時代の友人とお茶をして、下北沢で永井さんの哲学対話に参加した日。 吉祥寺は相変わらずなぜか人が多かったけれど、��の頭沿線の風景を見ていると東京で働きたくなる。　 哲学対話まで少し時間があったので、永福町で下車してそこから会場のボーナストラックまで歩いてみた。 立派な家がたくさんあった。 途中に前カゴに入れた荷物の重さにハンドルを奪われて車体が転がってしまった自転車のおばさんに出会い、車体を立ち上げるのを手伝った。 思ったよりも前カゴの荷物が重くて、手を貸したけれど全く役に立てなかった。思わず「うわっ、めっちゃ重いですね！」と言ってしまった。 すれ違ったもう1人の男性も手を貸してくれて、3人で(たぶんほぼ男性の1人の力で)車体を戻した。

哲学対話は、モノにまつわるテーマを決めて、モノに物語を求めてしまうのはなんでだろう、と対話した。 今日一緒に対話した方々は、モノが好きな人が多かった気がする。物語のあるモノを、大切にしたいという気持ちを持っている人が多かった気がする。 わたしは、そもそもモノが苦手なのと、使い捨てのモノが好きだったり、捨てることで安心しているな、と改めて実感した。

久しぶりに会った友人は、高校の先生をしている。私の8月までの出張先の町の高校に勤めていた時期があり、その時はお互いの勤務地の近くのデニーズでお茶をしたこともある。 私はその現場のお仕事を終えていて、友人はこの春に異動になり今は新しい学校に勤めている。 なので久しぶりにあったのだけれど、そうとは思えないくらい、近況から日常の話から、NHKの番組の話から、思い出話が一切ない楽しい話を何も気にせずたくさんさせてくれた。

高校時代からNHKの番組が大好きだった友人と、ドキュメント72時間の好きな回や、あまちゃんの楽しさを振り返った。1人で時を超えてあまロスしていたこともやっと人に話せた。　

私は高校時代に出会った人で、今でも繋がりがあると思えるのは、今日あった友人ともう1人の位なので、漠然と「どうしてるかな〜」と思い出の人達の近況を、友人を通して確認できて、なんだかみんな元気そうだった。家庭を持って(家庭って何？！持ち物なの？)関東近郊に住んでいる傾向。

このままでいいのかな〜と死にたくなる日々に拍車がかかるかな、と思ったけれど、変わったけれど変わらない友人とたくさんお話しできて、今日のところは少し大丈夫だった。

坂口恭平さんの“cook”を読み始めて、まだ自分で料理はできないけれど、いつかやってみたいな、と思えた。やってみたい、と思えた。

哲学対話が終わった後、永井さんから本にサインをもらっている方が何人かいて、持ってくればよかった！！とちょっと後悔。次のイベントも参加したい、と、先々にしたいことを一つ増やすことができた。

今は、毎日今日で終わってしまいたい気持ちに、まだ続けた方がちょっとのマシが得られるかも、の予定を見つけたい日々。

今日は山口で住んでいた祖母のお誕生日。

Myōga (茗荷 but usually みょうが or ミョウガ) is a type of ginger bud. It has a really unique zesty, refreshing taste. It's one of my favorite flavors in Japanese cooking (and really underused!), so when I saw this rōmaji nameplate on one side of a gate, I immediately spun around, hoping there would be a kanji counterpart on the other side. And there was!

So not a food name after all. A faux food name. A fauxd name?

In addition to Myōga, the name 明賀 could also potentially be read Meiga, Akega, Akiga, or Asuga. It belongs to about 900 people in the country.

明 came up on this blog for New Year; the verb 明ける [あける] means to begin a new year. More, broadly, though, 明 means bright or light, and by extension, cheerful, optimism, or clarity. Its readings are あ (as in あ.かり, あ.ける, -あ.け, あ.く, あ.くる, or あ.かす), あか (as in あか.るい, あか.るむ, or あか.らむ), あき.らか, メイ, ミョウ, and ミン.

賀, weirdly enough, also came up in the same New Year's post! It means congratulations or joy, and it's read ガ.

ガーリックポテト＊Garlic Potatos

初めて作るガーリックポテト。定番のヨーロッパ田舎料理です。

ざく切りの玉ねぎをレンジで加熱(箸がすんなり通る位)それをフードプロセッサーでペースト状にします。深めのフライパンに多めのオリーブオイルを入れ、潰したニンニク、パンチェッタを常温から弱火でゆっくり火を通します。ニンニクの風味とパンチェッタの塩気、旨味が油に馴染んだら、パンチェッタを取り出します。その油でパプリカをさっと炒め、取り出します。ニンニクだけを残したオリーブオイルに玉ねぎペーストを加えて弱火で加熱します。注意点は最初は水分が多いので焦げませんが、水分が減り飴色に近づくと焦げやすくなるので、鍋肌からずっと一定に飴色になるまで混ぜ続けましょう。

ニンジンもレンジで加熱しておきます。ジャガイモは好みで皮つき、皮無しどちらでもOKです。こちらもレンジで加熱しておきましょう。

飴色になった玉ねぎペーストに、ターメリックを加えます。そして、ニンジン、マッシュルーム、サラダ豆を加えます。スパイスはナツメグ、コリアンダーを加えます。ニンジンの角がとれるぐらいに炒めたら、白ワインを全体が浸るぐらい加えて火を強め蓋をします。

アルコールが飛んで玉ねぎペーストが全体に絡んだら、ジャガイモ、パンチェッタをフライパンに戻します。そして最後にパプリカを加えます。

ここで大切なことは、ジャガイモのホクホクした食感、パンチェッタの歯ごたえ、パプリカのシャキッとした食感を残すことです。

全体の色目、風味を確かめてターメリックを足しても良いでしょう。

そして最後に粉チーズで塩加減を調整し、クローブ、粗挽きコショー、そしてパセリを多めに加えます。好みでオレガノ、バジル、パプリカパウダー等を加えてもいいでしょう。

これで完成です。

常備菜として作り置きして、グラタン皿に盛りチーズを加えオーブントースターで温めたり、オムレツの中身として具材に使ったり、食べる毎にバリエーションが楽しめます。

パートナーからは[一生食べ続けられるほど美味しい]と称賛されました。

First time making garlic potatoes. A classic European country dish.

Heat roughly chopped onions in the microwave (to the point where chopsticks can easily pass through them), then use a food processor to make a paste. Put a large amount of olive oil in a deep frying pan, and slowly cook the crushed garlic and pancetta over low heat from room temperature. Once the garlic flavor and the salty, umami flavor of the pancetta have blended into the oil, remove the pancetta. Lightly fry the paprika in the oil and remove. Add the onion paste to the olive oil, leaving only the garlic, and heat over low heat.The thing to keep in mind is that it won't burn at first because it has a lot of moisture, but as the moisture decreases and it approaches a candy color, it will burn easily, so keep stirring until the skin of the pot becomes a candy color.

Heat the carrots in the microwave as well. You can use potatoes with or without skin, depending on your preference. Let's heat this up in the microwave too.

Add turmeric to the caramelized onion paste. Then add carrots, mushrooms and salad beans. Add nutmeg and coriander to the spices. Stir-fry the carrots until the corners come off, then add white wine until they are completely submerged, turn up the heat, and cover.

Once the alcohol has evaporated and the onion paste is fully coated, return the potatoes and pancetta to the frying pan. And finally add paprika.

You may want to check the overall color and flavor and add turmeric.

Finally, adjust the salt level with grated cheese, and add cloves, coarsely ground pepper, and plenty of parsley. You can also add oregano, basil, paprika powder, etc. if you like.

This completes the process.

You can make it as a regular dish, add cheese to a gratin dish and warm it up in the toaster oven, or use it as an ingredient in an omelet, or enjoy a variety each time you eat it.

My partner praised it, saying it was so delicious that I could keep eating it for the rest of my life.

今日のトピック：や、～なければいけません、midterm review

So this past 金曜日 was the midterm. It wasn't that bad and we already got our scores but I wanted to go over our midterm review sheet.

I have a challenge for you! I want you to write down what you think the answer is based on my previous posts. There are one or two grammar points I don't think I've gone over with you, so I'll do that now.

The final grammar points i need to cover are や And ～なければいけない／なきゃいけない

Let's start with や!

や connects two nouns like と except や suggests that the things referred to are proposed as examples and that you are not exciting an exhaustive list. It's similar in the way that たり is used. 練習しましょう。

 AやB (A and B, for example)

東京や大阪に行った。I went to tokyo and osaka (and may have visited other places)

おにぎりやラーメンを食べた。I ate onigiri and ramen. (and may have eaten other things)

Honestly there's not much else to it. It's really straightforward!

Next is ～なければいけない／なきゃいけない

This is used to say when something has to/must be done. ねければ is the more formal version and its more often seen in the written language while なきゃいけない is more colloquial and mainly found in the spoken language. To conjugate, you need your verb in the present negative form. For example:

勉強する＞勉強しない＞勉強しなきゃいけない

作る＞作らない＞作らなければいけない

歌う＞歌わない＞歌わなきゃいけない。

待つ＞待たない＞待たなければいけない

食べる＞食べない＞食べなきゃいけない

火曜日に日本語の試験（しけん）があるので、たくさん勉強しなければいけません／いけない。Because I have a japanese exam on tuesday, i must study a lot.

もうすぐ母は家に帰るので、車を洗わなきゃいけません。Because my mom is returning home soon, i have to wash the car.

食べすぎたので運動しなければいけません。Because I ate too much,  I must exercise.

今、私の双子はフランスに住んでいるので、手紙（てがみ）を送らなきゃいけません。Because my twin is living in France right now, I must send letters.

熱があって、喉（のど）が痛（いた）いので、薬を飲まなければいけません。Because I have a fever and my throat hurts, I must take medicine.

Our midterm review was in the format of a story. 始めましょう

You are an exchange student in tokyo. You are on your way back to Tokyo from a one day trip to Oze. The train stopped half way for a while due to a minor road accident. You get bored, so you start talking to a woman/man sitting next to you. The person asks you “where are you from?” how would you say this in japanese?

出身（しゅっしん）はどこですか。

Ask the person has ever been to foreign countries

外国（がいこく）に行ったことがありますか。

The person commented that your Japanese is very good. Be humble like Japanese people and say “No, no. I have to study more”

いいえいいえ。もっと勉強（べんきょう）しなければいけません。／勉強しなきゃいけません。

Go on to say “i want to become better at japanese”

日本語がもっと上手（じょうず）になりたいです。

The train finally starts moving. You ask the person where they are going now. The person says, “I wanted to buy clothes. I'm going home now.”

ふくを買いたかったんです。でも、今から家に帰ります。

The person continues to say, “I need to cook tonight because my mother is sick.”

母がかぜをひいているので、今晩（ばん）料理（りょうり）しなければいけません。／しなきゃいけません。

You ask the person if his/her mother is all right. The person tells you, “she caught a cold and has a fever. But she is okay.”

かぜをひいて、ねつがあるんです。でも大丈夫ですよ。

The person goes on to say, “but she’d better not work today. She should sleep a lot.”

今日は働かないほうがいいですね。たくさん／よく寝たほうがいいですよ。

I wrote down たくさん while my teacher wrote よく and i was a little confused but i think you can use either.

You ask the person what dish you are good at making. The person answers i often make curry rice, pork cutlet, tempura, and so on

よくカレーライスやとんかやてんぷらを作ります。

The person asks you if you cook a lot. Tell the person that “I want to cook more but I am too busy.”

もっと料理したいですが、いそがしすぎます。／いそがしすぎるんです。

The person tells you that they have to do an English homework assignment. You ask the person what they do in class. she/he says, “we read english books, write essays, listen to the news, and so on.”

私たちは英語の本を読みたり、作文（さくぶん）を書いたり、ニュースを聞いたりします。

You ask the person if they practice speaking as well. The person says, “I took the conversation class for a month but I quit.”

一ヶ月間（いっかげつかん）、会話のじゅぎょうをとりました。でもやめました。／とりましたが、やめました。

The person says, “the teacher's english was too fact! But I am interested in English conversation.”

先生の英語は早すぎたんです。／早すぎました。でも、英語の会話にきょうみがあります。

You offer some help. You tell the person that you can be his/her English conversation partner. You both decide to tutor English and Japanese to each other. You get off the train in a happy mood. 

The next day your advisor at school tells you that you looked very happy. Yell your advisor with a lot of excitement, “i met a fantastic woman/man on the train yesterday!! We will practice English and japanese!!” (hint- use んです）

昨日、電車ですてきな女の人／男の人に会ったんです！私たち／いっしょに英語と日本語をれんしゅうするんです。

Translation

Stir-fried salmon with garlic butter and soy sauce

(Cooking time: 10 minutes)

Ingredients (2 portions): salmon (2 fillets), potato starch (1 table spoon), green onions (2 medium-sized), mushrooms (100g), sugar (1 teaspoon), butter (1 teaspoon), soy sauce (1 table spoon), 1 clove garlic (grated)

Cut the salmon into bite-sized pieces and sprinkle with potato starch.

Cut the green onion and mushrooms into suitable sizes.

Put butter into a frying pan, fry the salmon fillets in it and when they are cooked through, add the ingredients from step 2. Mix in soy sauce, sugar, and garlic, fry everything and it's finished!

Basen “The character used to write the name of our nation, ‘Li,’ also depicts the story of its founding. Three swords under grass. ‘Grass’ is for ‘flower,’ representing the Mother Royal, ancestor of the emperor. The three ‘swords’ under it represent the three warriors who helped her. Of the three swords, the one larger sword represents the Shihoku-shu, the northern lands. That entire area grows sorghum and wheat. If you go further north, you enter a mountainous region… Hey, are you listening?!”

趣向(しゅこう/Shuko): There seems to be no word which directly refer to it in English… Idea, plan, or taste is used depending on the context.

趣味・趣向(しゅみ・しゅこう) is sometime used in Japanese. 趣味(Shumi) is “hobby”. For example, let’s say I have a hobby of Karaoke and I have a karaoke party with my friends once a month. And I say 「来月は趣向を変えて、コスプレでアニメソングのカラオケパーティをしよう！」. It means “Next month, let’s do something different and have a cosplay karaoke party singing anime songs!” In this case, 趣味(Shumi) is “hobby: karaoke”, and 趣向(Shuko) is “how we enjoy karaoke: cosplay and sing anime songs”. So I guess I can say 趣向(Shuko) is an idea to enjoy something based on your taste.

The word is also used in the following line later;

If I translate it directly, it will be “It is tough to be young.” But Maomao’s way of saying is suggestive, such as “お若い” instead of “若い” even though it’s not necessary to add “お”(Keigo, honorific) for Basen in her monologue. And also judging from the context, we can understand that “…and vigorous” is hidden in her line.

つつがなく（Tsutsuga-naku）: formal word which means safely, well, without any incident/trouble.

Otoko-Ichi “Koko’de, ano kata’niwa shinde-morau.”

Man-1 “This will be where they die.”

方（かた/Kata）: It’s like a Keigo of “人(ひと/Hito): person”, same as “お方(おかた/Okata)”. With “お” or without, it means honorific feeling to the person. And if it means more than two people, 方 becomes “方々（かたがた/Kata-gata）”, so this 方 only refers to the single person: Jinshi. I wonder why they translated it as “they”, which could lead viewers to mistakenly believe that Maomao was also a target. If I were to translate it, I would use “that gentleman.”

死んでもらう（しんでもらう）: It's hard to translate this expression into English. ～してもらう means “have someone do” and maybe “Here, (is the place where) that gentleman shall die (for us).” would be my direct translation. In Japanese, such expressions are often used, especially in movies or games, just before someone is going to kill the other person, as a softer way of saying.

This line can be more polite, if you change もらう to いただく: ここで、あの方には死んでいただく.

上座（かみざ/Kami-za）: the top seat of honor, upper seat ⇔ 下座（しもざ/Shimo-za）: the bottom seat, lower seat

I don’t know how it is in China, but in Japan, there are usually 上座 and 下座 in each room, and the guests are guided to 上座. Normally, 上座 is located at the farthest from the door/entrance, and 下座 is at the closest. It depends on each room, and even if it’s not the farthest from the entrance, the seat near the 床の間（とこのま/tokonoma） alcove or one with a good view may be the 上座.

Maomao (That’s Master Shishou, Concubine Loulan’s father. He is the leader of the Shihoku-shu region and the organizer of this hunt. Hmm? Did he say something to him? Would that infinitely well-mannered eunuch show such an obvious attitude? Wait, could it be, because of the heat…)

外面のいい（そとづらのいい/Soto-zura’no ii）: looks nice outside (but…)

It’s usually used in a negative sense, like “彼は誰にでも外面はいいが、家族には横柄だ（かれは、だれにでもそとづらはいいが、かぞくにはおうへいだ : He looks so nice with everybody outside, but he’s arrogant towards his family.”

あからさまな(Akara-sama-na): obvious, bald, bare, blatant

It’s also usually used in a negative sense, like “彼女はあからさまに私に意地悪だ（かのじょは、あからさまにわたしにいじわるだ/Kanojo’wa akara-sama-ni watashi’ni iji-waru da : She’s obviously mean to me.”

Here is はあ instead of はい again, which shows Maomao is wondering why his mood seems worse. I think they just translated it as “yes”, because replacing by “yeah” or something would sound too rude.

猫猫（良かった…さっきより体調(たいちょう)は良さそうだ。機嫌(きげん)は悪(わる)そうだけど）

Maomao (Yokatta… Sakki-yori taicho’wa yosa-soda. Kigen’wa waru-soda-kedo.)

Maomao (Good, he looks healthier than earlier. His mood seems worse, though.)

It’s interesting that Maomao has no idea about his behavior, in spite that he’s just embarrassed.

粗末な物(そまつなもの/Somatsu-na mono): something shabby/poor/simple

That is a standard phrase to humble, which is used when giving a present in Japan, but in this case Maomao is saying that because butterbur is just a vegetable and it’s not something gorgeous.

～していただけますか(～shite-itadake-masuka): Would you mind if～? Could you～, please? Would it be possible to～?

Although they translated it into “would you like～,” I feel something is off a bit. I think “I’m afraid it’s just something simple, but could you please eat this, please?” is better, because she is not asking him if he’ll eat it, and actually, she’s asking him to eat it.

I’m sure you all thought “Don’t end here!” The incident where he jumped into the waterfall wasn’t in the original web novel, so when I read this in the light novel first, I was so surprised and thought “What? Mozuku somen (prose, cooking)

Mozuku is a unique seaweed from Okinawa. Somen is a very thin udon noodle. It has been my staple dish since last summer. The soba noodles are thick, and the thickness of the somen noodles is just right for the mozuku.

Mix grated daikon radish, grated garlic (a little), green chili pepper (a little chopped), and dashi stock, and mix with boiled somen noodles until evenly combined. Eat cold.

If you eat it warm in winter, the fishy smell of mozuku will bother you, so it is best to eat it chilled in summer.

モズクは、沖縄特産の海藻。そうめんは、極細のうどん。昨年からの夏の定番になっている料理。そばは太目で、そうめんの太さがモズクとちょうど釣り合う。

卸し大根、卸しニンニク（少々）、青唐辛子（少々：刻み）とだし汁を合わせ、茹でたそうめんと混ぜ合わせ、均一にする。冷たい状態で食べる。

冬に温かくして食べると、モズクの生臭さが気になるので、夏に冷やして食べるのがベスト。

Spring Blossom Interview with Director Yukiyo Teramoto

春満開インタビュー 寺本幸代監督

Please tell us about the secret story behind the production of the final episode.

最終話の制作秘話を教えてください。

Finishing and shooting lasted all night for about three days, and it seems that I could see hallucinations by the end of it (laughs). I am relieved that we were able to broadcast the content that we were able to show. The trick that the passcode to unlock the missile is "HEART" was thought up by Naohiro Fukushima, in charge of screenwriting. I think the highlight was the scene where Joker writes his name on the spaceship and tells Phoenix, "Be sure to come back." I wonder when he wrote the name, but in the shot of the spaceship just before this scene, the name is obscured by light to disguise it. So the name was already written at that point.

最後は仕上げと撮影が3日間くらい徹夜して、 幻が見えたそうです(笑)。なんとかお見せでき る内容で放送することができて、ほっとしまし た。ミサイルの解除パスコードが 「HEART」 というトリックは、脚本の福島(直浩)さんが考 えてくれました。 ジョーカー的には宇宙船に名前 を書いて「必ず返しに来い」とフェニックスに言 うシーンが、見せどころだったと思います。いつ の間に名前を書いたのかと思いますが、そのシー ンに入る直前の宇宙船が映るカットでは名前を誤 魔化すために光を入れて見えなくしています。な ので、あの時点ではすでに書いてあるんですよ。

What was the most memorable moment for you other than the last episode?

最終話以外で、印象的だったことは?

There is a scene in the end of episode 50 where Spider Ace protects President D from a sniper's bullet and shows him the "DF" ring on his left hand, saying, "I have sworn my allegiance to President D." When the first picture came in, the ring on Spider Ace's middle finger was forgotten, so I asked for the picture to be redone and a ring to be added. Then somehow, I ended up with a picture of Spider Ace with the ring on his ring finger (laughs). The staff around me and I laughed hysterically and rushed to have it fixed.

I wanted to depict how Spider Ace came to be loyal to D. I liked Spider Ace and Detective Wolfe in the original story, and I really wanted to have Detective Wolfe appear in episode 35, but there was no room for him, so I gave up on the idea. I am glad that I was able to create an interesting combination with D and Spider Ace, but I also wish I could have drawn those two in the story. With Dai Sato, who is in charge of the series composition, I was also thinking about a story about Dr. Neo's astronaut days. When he was young, he had a moment when he saw a spaceship that was disguised as a comet for a moment due to the influence of a solar flare, and from that moment he came to believe that aliens existed. It was a shame that we couldn't depict it. Neo knew Silver when he was young, and I wanted to depict that with Purple as well.

スパイダーAがDに忠誠を誓ったキッカケを 描きたかったです。 スパイダー・Aは原作でのウ ルフ刑事とのコンビが好きだったので、本当は第 35話でウルフ刑事も登場させたかったのですが、 入る隙間がなくて諦めました。そのおかげでDと スパイダー・Aという面白いコンビが出来たので よかったという思いもありますが、あのふたりも 描きたかったという気持ちもあります。シリーズ 構成の佐藤 大さんとは、ドクター・ネオの宇宙 飛行士時代のお話も考えていました。若かりしネ オが太陽フレアの影響で一瞬だけ彗星の変装が解 けた宇宙船を見た瞬間があり、そこから宇宙人は いると信じるようになったという設定だったのですが、これも描けなくてもったいなかったです。 ネオは若い頃のシルバーとも顔見知りなので、パプルも交えてその辺りを描きたかったですね。

Finally, please tell us what "Kaitou Joker" means to you, Director Teramoto.

最後に、寺本監督にとって『怪盗ジョーカとは、どんな存在なのかを教えてください。

For me, it is a special work that fulfilled my dream of directing an animated TV series. I myself have loved anime since I was a child, and even now as an adult, there are many works that I still remember as my favorites. There are still many stories I would like to tell from the original work, and if there is an opportunity, I would love to do a sequel. The staff also said that they would like to do a sequel, so I feel that "Kaitou Joker" is a work that is truly loved by everyone.

Nice to meet you! To start off, what do you dress in at bedtime?

よろしくお願いします! まずは、夜に寝る時の格好を教えてください

Tsubasa: I don't change my clothes.
