I don’t know if anyone’s ever asked this before so I’m sorry if I missed it! But I was really curious about your general process? Do you do purely watercolor works or a mix of watercolor and then digital additions/edits? Of course only if you’re up to/willing to share! I’m trying to learn more in regards to watercolor and love your works so much!
I hope you have an amazing day!!
Hi!! Sorry it took me a moment!:D I am doing a bit of everything to be honest! I consider myself more of a mixed media artist! (Meaning different type of traditional and digital edits!) So some of my work is fully watercolor while other is mixed! For example, take this doodle of mine! Here's the freshly unadjusted scan:
Tumblr media
Then with color adjustement to correct what my scanner washed out:
Tumblr media
And then some light digital correction to make it a bit nicer!
Tumblr media
For pieces like this, I normally work with a base of watercolors and inks on top of a colored pencil lineart.
Tumblr media
Then I work in gouache and acrylic gouache for the part I want to "carve out" more. Then I finish everything with another layer of colored pencils on top to add more details and gradients, before scanning and touching up with digital. (sometimes I can go all out with digital edits and sometimes not at all! it depends on the piece!) For example here's one that was not retouched digitally at all beside correcting the washed out scan + watermark.
Tumblr media
Hope this helps!:D

☆ Color study ft. Izuku
Clip Studio Paint | July 17, 2024
Rendering after years of not doing it 😭 it came out pretty well I actually liked it a lot! No sketch no practice just trusting the process 😭 The laptop I used had the saturation SOOO low, when I finished it and opened the pic on my phone my eyes started bleeding 💀 had to edit it a thousand times so it looked normal.
Brushes used are just the csp defaults pencil & gouache ♡ need to adjust the pressure sensitivity bc I almost lost all my fingers doing this...
Might do another w Bakugou ♡

Art Study of Jesper (character from "Klaus").
This was referenced from a screencap from Animation Screencap.
For the background... let's just say that I overdid it. I even overdid the figure in this drawing. I know this pic was different from the original, even though it was referenced from the screencap. However, at least I did the best I could.
Anyway, enjoy.
Done with traditional art tools: drawing pencil (s), art markers, gouache, ink pens, Posca markers, and color pencils. Edited with GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP).

My DIY Art Degree
Tumblr media
Some people think there’s an arbitrary marker where you’re finally a self-taught artist, that you eventually reach a point where you’re done with your art education. But I think we spend our whole lives learning, so my goal for my 37th year on earth is to start being a committed self-teaching artist.
I have so many interests I want to improve and learn that I can’t predict what my progress or end result will look like, but some of the things I want to explore are:
Sketching and drawing
Coloring techniques and color theory
Painting with watercolor and gouache
Painting on the Procreate app
Creative Journaling
Handwriting, hand lettering, and calligraphy
So I dug up a bunch of books and videos to make up a curriculum and planned out my own DIY art degree to start learning them all!
Each month has its own focus:
Learning About Learning Art
Mark-making, Sketching, & Basic Shapes
Perspective
Figure Drawing & Anatomy
Gesture Drawing
Character Design
Color & Light
Composition
Landscapes & Environmental Design
Using Markers & Colored Pencils
Painting with Gouache & Watercolor
Digital Art
I don’t have a syllabus for the full year planned out yet, but here’s a rough draft of the materials and activities I want to try out for Quarter 1:

This is by no means a comprehensive education, but I feel like I came up with a good introduction to the things I’m interested in. I’m not going to learn everything about all of these topics in just a year, and I know I'm not going to get through all the resources I found.
I also want to make this process as cheap as possible, so I’m using a lot of free stuff from YouTube and my local libraries. Many of the resources came from radiorunner’s Curriculum for the Solo Artist and suggestions I found through the almighty social media algorithms.
If your libraries can’t get the books on order or Inter-Library Loan, or if you’d rather just buy them to keep, I’m including Amazon affiliate links. (Many can be found as PDFs through other free methods but I definitely don’t recommend looking for the books on Demonoid, Mobilism, or PDF Drive.)
What do you think I'm missing? What do you think is too extra?
Learning is a life-long process, so even though I gave myself a year to restart, it’s just that: my restart.

Literally haven't posted in years so here's a picture of some folks from Arcane and a single one of Anya because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. The first two were without reference just for funsies. Sketches done with ancient dried out Stabilos (Jinx, Anya, and Vi are only Stabilo), color with ohuhu alcohol markers, black is acryla gouache. The graffiti is done with Gelly Roll Moonlights, shout-out to the orange one who decided he'd never been used and never would be.
Tumblr media
Some things I learned from this one:
* Daniel Smith Watercolor Ground can protect crappy paper from alcohol markers and make a somewhat toothy, impermeable surface that's excellent for blending. It does take 24-48 to dry completely. It WILL smudge water based media underneath. Not as bad if you swipe it on really fast (not recommended)
*Sakura has been saying for years that you just need to scribble with a jelly roll to fix it. I decided I wasn't giving it my all the previous times I'd tried, and used a full sized sketchbook page scribbling as hard as I could to get ink out. I also tried water, alcohol, and wd-40 to get the ink to flow. It did not. This was the last set of Gelly rolls I bought probably more than five years ago. I was angry because 2 of the pens I bought did not work when I bought them. They still don't work. I'm frustrated because they either work flawlessly and beautifully, or literally not at all.
* I already knew this one from previous mistakes but do NOT layer Gelly Roll over water based media (including regular gouache) unless you're ok with the colors possibly blending. They probably will. Hence, acryla gouache.
* I did something different for each portrait, so each one has some positives and negatives for me. My favorite in terms of quality is Ekko, which was done with an off-white colored pencil for the sketch. I think that worked best.
*Caitlyn's is a little disappointing to me because the lead-pencil shading looks like a five o'clock shadow. Good to remember for future.
*just fyi there's a bunch of other sketches that got covered up. You can see a bit of dog snoot up/right of Ekko. Just thought it was a fun little thing.
Edit: a bitch learned to use a break.

comparison
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(in addition to the previous post)
It's a lot of fun for me to make things like this. And to show others! to understand better my view at the characters
Ok, starting with ToneKai. They are my light,,, And they're so colorful and bright, aren't they! I like to think of all those fluff memories they make together. Tonegawa and Kaiji are the first characters who I paint a lot using gouache and I always try to make my drawings with them as colourful and vivid as possible
and I can't say the same about LawDo,,, even though I sometimes also enjoy thinking of them as a sweet couple they both aren't... They're angsty. Harsh.
I usually do not paint them but If I do, the paintings aren't colourful at all. Most of them are dull and gloomy.
So I really like them to be b/w and that's the main reason why almost every my lawdo picture is drawn using a simple pencil. But! As probably you can see Law's list is a lot more cooler than Doffy's. It's pretty obvious and cliched, that Law is cold and Doffy is hot but still. I like this difference between them. So I usually edit my photos to match this headcanon

Okay, so I decided to try making and posting fanart for the first time in like almost ever...It's not amazing but it's something I guess. *shrugs* I made this to use as a cover page for my Once-ler longfic, Visions of Greed (the title is going to go in the black space along the top). To make this I used watercolor, watercolor pencil, metallic colored pencil, and gouache for the background. The butterfly and daffodils at the top have a symbolic meaning. If you you read the story, you'll find out exactly what that meaning is.
Edit: A link to the masterpost for more info on the fic: https://www.tumblr.com/metallicbluemorpho/774125255283359744/vision-of-greed-a-once-ler-fanfiction-masterpost?source=share

Eggtober 10th 2023
Tumblr media
"Wisps": Hot and Sour Soup
(Clip Studio Paint, Gouache brush, Gouache Blender, some pencil brush detailing, circle tool for the bowl. 18 colors. About an hour.)
Cousin of the Egg Drop soup. I think the eggy wisps are properly referred to as "egg flowers" and that's cute as hell.
Anyway, hot and sour soup is that, only "what if we made it spicy and sour and also added more stuff?" One of my family's favorites. And a great way to eat tofu. Borderline vegan and tasty as hell. 10/10, would recommend.
Leaving it pleasantly warm for @lady-quen's breadbugs. Not hot. We don't want to cook the poor creatures. If a breadbug swims in your soup, does it become a dumpling bug? Or a noodle bug? We must explore this for science.
As always, proud to present many eggy dishes to @quezify on this lovely Eggtober. Enjoy!
Edit: Forgot the speedpaint. You can see I was really inspired by the blue of that bowl.

I am excited to get to wrap up my story "your beauty never ever scared me" on Ao3 by the end of the year. I created this banner procrastinating writing the newest chapter lolol and was pleasantly surprised by its results enough to post it here :) Keep your eyes peeled for its addition as the new story banner!
Materials to make: gouache, water color, and coloring pencil and the photo editing app Snapseed for the text :))

what program and brushes do you use to draw?
clip studio paint, I use version 1.10.5 and I have no idea how old it is but I'm used to it and don't feel like upgrading. I've already given out some brush information here (lines) and here (colors), however at some point I switched from using csp's "tapered pen" to "textured pen" for lines, which I'll be honest might have been a complete accident. here's the settings for that
Tumblr media
(I have it at a larger size right now obviously, that probably won't be your default for lines)
I've also been using the gouache and realistic watercolor "rough wash" brushes for coloring more often (see below).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WORD TO THE WISE: I use a bunch of different brushes, textures, etc with some awareness of what "works" from experience but often from completely random messing around, because it's more fun for me to do it that way and I think it yields more creative results. I'll give this info out when people ask but I encourage you to figure some things out yourself, don't be scared to mess around like a toddler with finger paints. namely if you download a bunch of free textures off the csp assets store and fuck with those it can produce a slightly cooler image than before (I use these CMYK halftones by daisydoodles a lot, although I'm definitely using them wrong lol)
Tumblr media
also worth noting sometimes I'll take a traditional piece and go over it digitally, I recommend doing this because sometimes you just can't capture the same visual effect with purely digital brushes. idk why.
it's pretty easy to take a clear enough picture and touch it up a bit to get lines to work with- I do this by 1. jacking saturation all the way down 2. messing with brightness/contrast until the white matches the white canvas and there's minimal shadows 3. converting brightness to opacity 4. using the "sharpen" filter on it a couple of times until I get it looking nice enough to edit. (this works better if you edit the picture a little on your phone in advance)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I haven't finished this piece yet obviously but it should look something like the second pic, then you can find some brushes that look pencil-y enough and use them on a transparent setting to erase the sketchy parts, or don't. whatever works for you.

I recently, in collaboration with my source, archived their collection of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko (安彦 良和)'s concept art for the cancelled 1990s Sunrise adaptation of Fabre's Book of Insects. To view the archives as well as some history on their background, visit below!
Website backup - https://t.co/9sjYoKkMBP
MEGA - https://t.co/bCGWGWCQZf
Internet Archive -https://t.co/FLOwznWKfD
History:
I was graciously allowed to document, clean and archive these illustrations created by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko during the early to mid 1990s by their original owner. I have been in conversation with the owner on Twitter for over two years now after they sent an open request to the community to identify the nature of these works and to help them locate any and all information about them. After touching base, we began our conversations, though the trail often ran cold.
To this date, the current definitive information on these pieces is as follows: Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, while still employed actively by Sunrise's animation department in the early 1990s, created these pieces for an internally held contest to decide who would be in charge of character design for Sunrise's adaptation of Jean Henri Fabre's eponymous text. The dates of the contest are not known, though based on the illustration quality, I can personally say that these are very indicative of Yasuhiko's early 1990s hand and manner of rendering. This would place them in a window between 1990 to 1995 before he made a genuine departure from animation to focus on his work with manga.
Yasuhiko's animation credits, while ending in the early 1990s with F91 Gundam, did not totally cease. The 1990s proved to be a unique time in which Yasuhiko took major forays into character design work for titles such as Super Atragon, Assault Suits Valken II, and Chikyū SOS Soreike Kororin. However, the proposal for Fabre never took off and it became a phantom work, never to see the light of day again until my source was given these items.
These are pencil and watercolor/gouache renderings of the original character designs for not only the protagonist Fabre, but an additional 13 other characters drafted. Each drawing measures 25 cm in height and 20 cm in width (9 x 7 inches), and the character names and their related roles are glued on from clippings made in a word processor. under the character drawings. In addition, since all the characters are numbered from 1 to 13, it is believed that Each drawing is very careful and detailed, and Yasuhiko's specialty full-color watercolor technique and character creation can be seen on each item. These are believed to be the entirety of the lineup as each one is numbered 1-13.
Yoshikazu Yasuhiko himself mentioned the animation of Fabre's Book of Insects in his lecture "Anime and Gundam in the 1970s" held at Hiroshima City University on August 3, 2008. Its existence is also known by his official biographer and interviewer Makoto Ishii. I, too, knew of their existence though only though asking Makoto via Twitter alongside my source, who was told in turn that these works were forgotten by Yasuhiko as well. However, since these works disappeared at the planning stage, they were never mentioned in any books such as "The Complete Works of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko" or "My Back Pages".
Since there are basically no materials left for the anime since it was canceled at the early planning stage, these works haven't seen the public eye. These pieces were preserved in museum glass and carefully stored for years and were photographed by me. I edited them to match their true color and dimensions as I don't have them physically on hand (they are now going to auction in commemoration of the opening of the "Yasuhiko Yoshikazu, the Artist" exhibition in Hyogo).
