Trouble the Water Series by @themarydragon

Calm Waters Run Deep and The Quiet River Rages (along with the oneshot Remember the Spring) by @themarydragon are some of the first BotW fanfictions I encountered. The series just encapsulates Zelda’s POV during the series and these stories are cannon to me. I have reread this series multiple times and now can do so with these hardcover beauties.

These binds were heavily inspired by Taylor Swift and I went hard on the 'Zelda's Version' theme. For the covers I used the Midnights album cover as my initial design inspiration with the font and art combinations. For the typeset chapter headings I used the 'Taylors Version' font and line drawings of lilies to evoke silent princesses. I used lyrics from The Prophecy/The Archer for Calm Waters Run Deep as these are very pre-calamity Zelda coded to me, and then Sparks Fly/Peace for The Quiet River Rages as these really aligned with Zelda after she leaves the castle. These came together really beautifully in my mind and I love the final result.

I knew I wanted to do printed covers with art of Zelda on the cover and was looking for ages. The text blocks have been languishing on my shelf waiting for their covers to come since December 2024. When @eerna posted the amazing and thematically perfect before and after art I fell in love with the art and once I had permission to use the art, I couldn't make these covers fast enough. I am so glad I waited to make these covers. (So many thanks to @eerna for letting me use her gorgeous art in my covers once again!)

In terms of mistakes, casing as always was a bit of a nightmare. I had issues with my guillotine when I cut one of the text block slightly on the diagonal, rounded the spine and then had to unround the spine and fix my fuck up which I hope to never have to do again. It was better than printing a new text block but my gosh the stress. I also realised when I was uploading this I have used @themarydragon's Tumblr handle for the cover rather than MaryDragon which is her ao3 handle and used all inside of the books, but at this point I am going to have to live with that mistake!

9. Did you get into any new genres?

also yes! i think i've talked about it before, but i was reading 1-2 books a week for all four years of my undergrad, got super burnt out, and then had an unplanned reading hiatus after graduating. only in the last two-ish years have i really gotten back into reading (hence being so late to tfota :') and i feel like i'm simultaneously playing catch up with books i missed out on in that time + learning what i like to read now that i'm adult. as a teen i almost exclusively read ya fiction and fantasy, which is fine, but it's been fun to expand + grow beyond that

this year, i tried to read more creative nonfiction (cnf is.... my job, so it's hard to disassociate reading it from work, but i'm getting there). i specifically got really into ecological writing, which has added a lot of exciting titles to my tbr! i've also been trying out more adult fantasy and fiction, which i've really enjoyed. short story collections, autobiographies (hit and miss for me), lit fic, romance (i read my first emily henry!), historical cnf, and horror all get honorable mentions here, too.

all in all, a very exploratory reading year!

can you explain your art techniques a little bit further? I just saw your post about arcane helping you drop line art and stuff, and I wanted to understand better (as someone trying to get into digital art)

For the first 7 years of my digital art journey I imitated the comicbook-style art tutorials and techniques artists I liked used. This means that I would start out with a sketch, draw the lineart on another layer on top of the sketch, hide the sketch, use solid blocks of color on separate layers for the coloring, and add lighting effects on top of it all. I was never really happy with how it turned out, and I often felt like I shouldn't have gone past the colored sketch phase because the full render would lose so much life. I used pretty much the same brushes I use now, aside from some textured ones, but not to their full potential because they were painting brushes being used for flat shading. Here's a few examples of fully rendered stuff from 2020-2021:

Then, I realized I do NOT have to do things I don't wanna do, and I can totally remove any steps from the process that I wish! I experimented for a while until I settled on a new thing that worked for me. And so my current process is: draw a sketch, color it all on one layer (base colors), add light effects if needed, add another layer on top of everything, and paint until satisfied with the level of rendering. Then I add optional effects, such as fires or patterns. This means I leave the sketch layer visible, so I have to clean it and base colors with erasers as I work, but it enables me to preserve the sketchy energy. The "all rendering on one layer" approach frees my hand and I don't feel pressure to render everything separately and perfectly, which in turn, ironically, makes my art look more detailed because the eye compensates for unfinished bits. In addition, the line between a colored sketch and a fully rendered piece is much thinner, which means I don't have to commit to completing anything, and that is a big deal for an insecure person prone to artblocks. If I lose interest halfway through the lineart-and-blocks-of-color process, I am left with an unusable piece. If I do it halfway through the painting process, I get a charming, messy piece a la my recent Chappell Roan art (I left the armor unfinished, and yet it doesn't clash with the rest of the art). Here's a recreation I did to show what a big difference the different approach makes:

So why didn't I stop doing lineart sooner? I did try, but my attempts tried to replicate what I did when painting traditionally, instead of adjusting to my digital abilities, so it usually looked whack. I remember showing my friends the Rito Village piece back in 2019, which was painted based on a screenshot from the game, and one of them telling me "Don't go back to lineart!" I was like "YEAH I am NOT going back to lineart!!! I will keep painting!!!" Only to realize that painting landscapes with already stylized references and painting portraits were completely different. Here's a painting portrait from one of those trial and error attempts. Later I realized the mistake was working on TOP of the sketch, as I would have done for traditional work, instead of both below AND on top of it - after all, my intention was to preserve the life of the sketch, which was impossible when I couldn't even see it. I also didn't understand color values (or honestly, any color aspects) very well, resulting in some low-contrast, unappealing blobs.

So yeah, my advice to any beginner digital artist is: experiment and figure out what works for you. Think about what makes you happy when creating, and build your process around it. Also, keep researching art theory and applying it to your work. Good luck to you and all other digital artists~

hmm to be honest i dont have all 9 main character references yet, bc im so particular about how i imagine them to look,, so far i have everyone apart from kai and wolf😭 i havent seen someone that looks how i imagine them on my pinterest yet :( but as for the others, i think ive posted a lot of them before but this is who i have so far :

oh also some of these characters have tweaks i make to the references when i draw them

i dont have an exact winter match so i use these two and kinda merge them

I love how in canon Channary is a HORRIBLE person and in fanon (or at least mine) she's also like a loving mum 😭

Like what we know is that she's cruel, bullies her sister. She abuses her servants, she wants to dominate earth, too. And of course, she's a terrible queen and dumb.

But in my head (though I don't ignore this) I'm like 💞she's a sweet loving mother to her baby💞. I mean, it's not NOT true, she seems pretty loving in fairest (Selene sleeps in her bedroom and she feeds her which isn't common in lunar royalty). I think she'd be... A good mom? I mean not quite, but she'd be loving and care more for her daughter than anything else.

Maybe that's why I love this eerna fanart sm it's like YES THAT'S THEM AND THEY'RE SO CUTE

yeah i agree with them being more funny after getting older in theory, but i believe holly just didn't approach it the right way. i found the whole snake conversation, knife wife thing and him complaining about boring meetings annoying because i've scrolled through so many fandom posts and seen stuff just like it and i was expecting hb to keep her characters how she wrote them instead of quoting fans. one line i did really like and felt so in character for jude was when she told oak to pick two out of all the things he wanted to do after coming back from the citadel. it was so simple but i thought it was hilarious because it was so natural and if she kept the comedy like this i would've def appreciated it way more and it would've absolutely flowed way better instead of feeling jammed in there. because yeah they passed their own conflicts but they're still high king and queen and going through multiple serious things at the same time. like they never really get past being in serious situations. i felt they were a bit too carefree taking in consideration the position they're still in.

in general it's like yes characters can change but you have to be so careful with how you show it. because hb crafted such amazing characters and if she keeps milking them she'll lose what everyone loved about them in the first place. i wasn't the biggest fan of tsh but i think it's so much better than tpt because she was building a fresh new plot with complex characters but she got stuck with wanting to please fans and rushed the ending and it lost it's complexity, moral debates, all the things that made tfota so great. then goes on to indirectly make everyone hate wren. like she's also a morally gray character with flaws that makes mistakes LIKE JUDE but you have to spend time redeeming her, actually showing her going through the motions but it was all skipped so jude and cardan could be part of the plot. i truly believe wren would be as loved as jude if she had kept the books in her pov.

i also agree with jude and cardan becoming side characters like roiben and severin as much as it hurts💔 but truly their story is over and ya gotta know when to end before it's ruined.

Hii wanted to bring this up to you because i love your tfota discussions(and other fandoms as well). i've noticed that a lot of the target audience for this series is very superficial and don't really appreciate and understand the series in its entirety but you always have great points.

so anywaysss with that being said. something that sort of made me side eye tpt a little was jude and cardan. obviously characters change overtime and i think the fact that jude and cardan sort of started to resemble each other in indirect ways is a nice little detail but i felt like some of their interactions were very unnatural. it felt like hb was feeding into how a lot of the audience sees them which isn't terrible but it feels the slightest bit out of character. like what did it for me specifically was in the end when jude excuses herself by saying she was going to go yell at people. i mean jude has always been very sarcastic and witty but it seemed weird for her to say that, it felt like one of those incorrect quotes. like yeah she probably would be yelling at people but would she really say that? like basically it's just very small things that seem like fan service more than intentional writing ya know? now don't get me wrong i love them and i shamelessly enjoyed all of their appearances i also think they were still pretty consistent as characters but it's basically that it seemed like things they said were only there to please the public which fed onto the whole superficial view the general audience has of them.

I get what you mean! For me it was that Jude "knife wife" line, and Cardan complaining about the snake thing. Knife-wife could have been funny if it was written smarter and not literally quoting a fandom meme. If we wanted to have a comedic moment where Cardan complains about something gross and Jude shuts him down, it could have been a new thing instead of an event that happened ages ago that we've seen on-page. It reads like a parody, the self aware "haha"s are so awkward. HOWEVER. In theory I wouldn't mind them being written as funnier than they used to be. Like you said, they are a decade older than the last time we've seen them, and they've solved most of the issues that made them not want to joke around during the trilogy. And it's also amusing bc HB said she had problems figuring out what an almost-thirty-years-old Cardan would be like, so the fact that she settled on "clown uncle" is hilarious.

Which leads me to my main problem with it: The things that make them fun aged-up epilogue versions of themselves also make them worse main characters. Jude and Cardan in their late 20s are by default much less interesting than Jude and Cardan in the middle of their young adult angst unsolved trauma roller coaster. They should join Roiben and Severin in the lineup of side characters that are still plot relevant, but no longer the center of attention, which would make their shallower presentation less noticeable.
