Okay, we all know being a demigod is a shit position. Its scary and gets you killed in really nasty ways. But I feel like being a Big Three Kid has to be the shitiest position in all the shit positions.
Like, imagine being Thalia Grace. Your dad is king of the gods, lord of the skies. Led a war to get rid of a tyrant. And the only thing you get is his scorned wife AND brother, who both try to kill you (with one technically succeeding), a drunk of a mother, and brother who you thought was dead. Oh, wait, he’s not dead! No instead he was used as an offering to appease your dad’s wife and help fight in a war and prevent mass destruction.
Or maybe you can imagine being Percy. Son of the sea god, the stormbringer, the earthshaker. You get to live with a disgusting, abusive man for around 6 years. Who smells like literal shit. All because your scent as a demigod is too strong, BECAUSE of who your father is. You see things that you aren’t supposed to see and do things that people can’t do and go years thinking something is wrong with you. That your the problem. Then you get to the one place where you’re supposed to be save. But! Here is the kicker! You’re not! Your uncles hate you and you’ve been accused of stealing a symbol of power. A series of events that will kick off a war, and guess what. You’re a center point for it. Welcome to Camp Half-Blood.
Mhm, but then there’s Hazel. Daughter Pluto, god of the underworld and riches. But that doesn’t really change anything does it? She’s still living in 1930s America, in a red state. One where confederate flags still hang if you go deep enough into the city. She go to a school where the kids are supposed to be just like her! They still don’t like her tho. She’s got no idea who your father is, only that he left her with a parting gift. Only it’s not really a gift. Sure, she can pull rubies and diamonds from the earth, all worth millions. But anyone who’s ever gonna touch it will die. She lives with her mother, a woman gone so mad with greed it kills her. And Hazel, by the way. Laying dead Alaska, inhaling oil. But it doesn’t end there! She can’t have her mother suffering for eternity, can she? The answer is no. Hazel gets to spend the next 70 years in the Fields of Asphodel. It still doesn’t end! Because when she’s brought back to life, she gets to fight in a war against giants, her sad story seemingly never ending.
Nico’s a son of one of the Big Three, one of the most ancient and most powerful. But most people look at him as something bad, something not worth taking a second glance at. Something too look away from, mostly. He’s from the 30s, spent years in a magical time casino with only his sister at his side. She doesn’t stay for long though, she dies soon after they discover their heritage. And he doesn’t remember his mother much, a name without a face. A face without a name. He survived an attempted assassination at 2, though it wouldn’t be the only time his was life was threatened. He clings to his sister, even though she’s dead. He’s the son of the god of the underworld, is he not? There had to be a way, and there is. Only she won’t talk to him, she seems more concerned with communicating with the guy who got her killed instead. She chooses rebirth, and he decides to lay it to rest. She’s not coming back, and he has a war to fight in. (He gets stuck in a jar and forcibly outed a few years later, but that’s a lot to get into for now.)
Jason Grace is a pillar of New Rome, their golden boy, their American boy. He’s a son of Jupiter, a natural born leader. He’s been at camp for as long as he can remember, he wants to be praetor soon. He’s had a rocky start, but maybe he’ll be one of the lucky ones. Retire a veteran and live a long life with Reyna in New Rome. Only that never happened. He has no idea where he is, there’s a girl holding his hand, and she’s cute but it feels wrong. They get attacked and people come in and call him a Greek demigod, familiar, yes, but still wrong. It doesn’t feel right. It doesn’t put things into perspective the way it does for Piper and Leo. He’s goes to a quest to rescue Hera, the name sounds wrong. He nearly dies but at least he remembers who he is. He spends the next 6 months trying to get back home, even though he isn’t too sure on where or what home is. He gets there, eventually, but it doesn’t stop there. He’s dragged on quests and battles and fights in the war but at least he survives it, he’s still there. Apollo needs help, he and Piper give him aid. He gets dumped. He doesn’t get to he a veteran in New Rome. Not with Reyna, not with Piper, not with anybody. He doesn’t get kids or grandkids. No, he gets shot down, another demigod buried.
You could be any one of them, really. Pick your poison, but I guarantee you won’t like any of them. Spending years trying to find a place where you belong, where you feel safe. Only for it to never come.
Percy, who, if you really look at the books, isn’t really all that well liked until he’s at least 2 years into camp. Only to then be sidelined because the courages, brave, fearless daughter of Zeus is back from the dead. Nico, the son of one of the most feared and hated gods. Who has death written all over him, who excludes it so much animals can smell it and humans can sense it, who’s been ostracized and pushed off to the side since he was 10. Hazel, who was treated like disease as soon as she stepped foot on camp soil. Who’s gone her whole life looked as something that’s cursed, that will only bring misfortune, a bad omen.
Shit positions, all of them.
#Hazel and Jason make my head spin#also jaosn and Percy#I like how they both in a way didn’t want glory or to be some hero#i don’t think Jason mentions it much but they kids and grandkids mention in BOO is very telling#Percy’s is from the musical but whatever we all know the musical is canon#and show Percy thinking something is wrong with him and that he needs a mental evaluation of some kind is#everything#I’m making that canon now#I’d love to get a Thalia book#a trilogy maybe#first book is her with her mom and Jason + Luke and Annabeth on the run#ending with her dying#2nd book takes place after her resurrection and during the the war#final book is life with the hunters#and how she found peace in a world designed for her to struggle#I feel like out of all of them big three kids she’s the only one who got her happy ending#and in the fandom the hunters have gotten the reputation of being where Rick puts characters that can’t be shipped with anyone#but I really don’t think it’s the case with her#she’s also one of the only demigods where I think her story has come to a close#like it’s done#Percy’s story is almost done too#Nico and Hazel I feel aren’t quite there yet#percy jackson#thalia grace#hazel levesque#jason grace#nico di angelo#pjo hoo toa#heroes of olympus#percy jackon and the olympians

Rick is known to mirror myths a lot (Silena-Clarisse and Patroclus-Achilles, Polyphemus' cave, Hercules' labors, etc) He could and SHOULD have mirrored the Trojan war in HOO.
Let me set the scene. Gaea doesn't pop up until the last couple books. It's easy to be scared of something that is mentioned but not seen, which in my opinion, is why Gaea in the HOO books just wasn't scary enough.
So the antagonists in the first few books are the Giants working under Gaea's orders. Percy is kidnapped by them and given to the Romans in the hope that the Greeks and the Romans will go batshit crazy in a fight and forget all about the prophecy of the seven and destroying Gaea or whatever.
Camp Halfblood is fully ready for war. As soon as they find out (through an oracle or smth idk) that the Romans exist and they have Percy, not even Chiron can stop them. Percy is the hero of the Battle of Manhattan, of course, and the hero mentioned in the last great prophecy. He's like their modern Aristos Achaion.
Meanwhile, the Romans have no clue what's going on. There's this guy he's funny, he has no memories, he just shows up at their wolf goddess and trains and gets sent to them. Cool.
Juno can't stand to see New Rome be attacked. Whether or not they would win is a whole different story. So she plucks Jason from CJ and brings them to the Greeks just for some sort of a balance.
This mirrors the Trojan war in the sense that Troy was a fortified city, so is New Rome with tons of forts and walls. Aeneas' lineage went on to be Remus and Romulus, the founders of Rome. And Helen of Troy was stolen from the Greeks.
Anyway so there's that conflict, but at the same time Camp Halfblood is getting ready to attack, Jason, Piper and Leo get sent on a quest to rescue Hera who has been captured by Porphyrion and Enceladus.
On the way, Jason starts to regain his memory a little bit, though he doesn't know everything yet. He's still super conflicted with everything. A pretty girl thinks they were dating, Leo says they were best friends, Annabeth says the Romans are enemies. But whom should he really believe?
Piper's whole arc through the first book could be about how she's the daughter of the goddess of beauty, she wrongly assumes her fake crush on Jason was her mom's fault. And she's learned so much bad stuff about her mom from myths, she outright rejects feminity and anything remotely girly at first but then slowly she gets to know Aphrodite isn't as bad as some myths make her out to be. Bonding and shit bc why should Poseidon be the only present godly parent?
Leo, meanwhile, has no idea he can essentially fire bend in the first book. His arc could be about discovering his mother's death was his fault, slightly and coming to terms with it with the help of his friends.
Reyna on the Roman's side is freaking out bc Octavian wants to go to war with the Greeks who are close to attacking them, there's a strange dude who keeps trying to pick fights with gods, a horse girl and not to mention monsters won't fucking DIE.
SON trio go on their quest to Alaska to kill Alcyoneus/ release Thanatos and things are getting clearer to them as well. Just when the Greeks are about to attack on CJ, Polybotes and the monsters attack as well. Somehow, both sides end up fighting the monsters together.
They're not friends, but they're not enemies either, bc Percy is reunited with his gf and Jason is returned to his home.
The Roman senate and the Greeks somehow come to the same conclusions- that a quest needs to go to their ancient lands. Over the next few months the work of the Argo II commences.
Things seem smooth for a while. But Gaea grows restless. She poisons Octavian and manipulates him through dreams and stuff like Kronos did to Luke. As is the nature of most Roman emperors, Octavian overthrows Reyna and declares himself the leader of New Rome like his namesake Octavius Caesar. (HAHA! HISTORY PARALLEL BITCHES)
This puts the actual quest on hold bc the seven now need to find the Athena Parthenos to bring together the Greeks and the Romans and to stop Octavian's plan of trying to fuck as much shit up as possible.
Reyna, Nico and say idk, Grover, are the ones to deviate from the quest and bring the statue to USA again. But the Seven are still very much in Europe after rescuing Nico.
Percy and Annabeth fall into Tartarus which helps close the Doors of Death, except this time since Nico isn't there, Hazel has to take on control over ghosts and the dead in the House of Hades and leading up to it. The powers of mist, in my opinion, should have gone to Piper since charmspeaking is a lot like bending the mist verbally.
Piper's arc through the third and fourth book is starting to discover herself and with the help of her mother, figuring out she doesn't like Jason romantically like she thought she did.
Hazel's arc is gaining control over what she once was (dead). She's jealous her dad was there more for Nico than her, but she pushes past it and never lets her anger and grudges get the better of her which is like breaking boundaries for children of Hades/Pluto.
Frank's arc in HOH was really cool, I like that. So no change to that.
Jason, poor guy is still very much confused about everything really. He's used to being the leader, he feels lost in the large group. He has his moments to shine ofc (please take away his excess amounts of head injuries), but he starts to feel inferior, which is where Leo helps him bc the guy knows what that's like.
Anyway, in the absence of Percy and Annabeth, Jason has to take charge. He discovers he doesn't really like it. That's not what he was meant for even though he had greatness thrust upon him at a very young age.
His BOO arc is earlier this time and takes place throughout HOH and BOO. He's content with himself, even if he isn't with anyone. HE'S THE ONE THAT GETS SENT TO OGYGIA!!!
And Calypso eventually does fall for him bc he's smart, nice, and just an overall swell guy. But he helps her to realize that she can be content in herself as well. And he promises her that he'll help her.
Show me Leo, Jason and Percy trying to think of ways of helping the goddess.
In any case. BOO could have been like Iliad pt 2 also known as the Odyssey. It takes them the whole book just to get to Athens. Meanwhile, they've understood that Gaea is the main main villain. She's even raised some of the other primordials against them.
Percy and Annabeth already saw Tartarus, and then there's Oceanus who makes their travel much harder than necessary. Something something about how they get tossed all over the place and somehow manage to gather all the correct ingredients for the potion (i forgot the name lol) on their small adventures in the different places. In the end they finally make it to Athens. Except this time, there's only a few giants there bc they killed the rest before.
Annabeth and Percy are taken hostage, like it happens in the books, but PERCY WILLINGLY GIVES UP HIS BLOOD TO RAISE GAEA RATHER THAN LETTING ANNABETH GET HURT BC OF HIS FATAL FLAW LIKE ATHENA TOLD HIM WOULD HAPPEN EVENTUALLY!!
The Gods DON'T SHOW UP PLEASE!! That was so lameee. Why even do the whole quest if their mommies and daddies were going to show up to help them????
So while Percy and Annabeth are battling the remaining few Giants, Leo, Piper, Hazel and Frank go up against Gaia herself. In the old myths four titans held Ouranos down while Kronos chopped his essence up. In the same way, they battle Gaia away from her turf in the air, keeping her distracted enough. All these demigods are needed because she's a primordial dammit!
Jason, my guy, comes in a clutch, chops her to pieces and sends her essence to Tartarus!!
The world is saved, the end!

Seven — fourteen chapters of The Lost Hero
I don't like Chiron. I so much don't like him.
Sounds of sounds how CHB effectively lost the Battle of Manhattan if not Luke's suicide. No wonder fandom forgetting important things, when the author writes something weird about his own plot.
Rick is artificially trying to make things more important… although this is not even necessary, considering that the past repeats itself (literally, this is the main idea of these books, which I really don't like). C'mon, Rick, that's scary, too!
It's very strange when Piper's father arouses more emotions and interest in me than, in fact, the main characters.
“Yes,” the centaur said. “I know the Ares cabin is anxious to return to the woods for our regular games.” “And kill people!” one of them shouted.
First of all, Rick, trauma after war is what? Secondly… well, yeah, I sure don't like CHB demigods. As far as I concerned they all can be dead, I don't care. Bad writing, babe.
Yeah, Rick, we got you have a thing for unreasonable jealousy. The problem it's making me don't like Piper even more.
…is here the way Rick can humiliating Aphrodite and her cabin even more?…
Well, how do you like it? Was Percy's first quest problematic because he's a rookie? Well, he at least had some training from Luke. And here two of the three are absolutely useless in battle, the third one with amnesia. 🫤
…does Rick even understand that the whole story of Gaia's direct interference (as well as Hera's one) in Leo's mom's death is a proof that these "ancient laws" of non-interference are complete bullshit? (a cold glance towards Hermes)
…I don't like it. I seriously don't like what Rick wrote (I mean dragon's cavern).
I never thought that I would say it, but Rick demonizing fucking wolves.
What reason did Rick have to make Zeus' cabin uninhabitable when Percy didn't have such problems? Oh, right, Percy's his favorite.
She was maybe fifteen, with black hair — choppy like Piper’s — a black leather jacket, and silver jewelry, so she looked kind of goth;
A few words about how much Rick and his editors don't give a fuck. And no, this can't be pushed off to Jason's POV — the assumption that Annabeth "maybe eight" makes sense, since in fact she only recently turned 7, but it's worth trying to confuse a twelve-year-old with a fifteen-year-old, especially against the background of fourteen-year-old Luke, whose age guessed correctly. UPD: "but she still looks the same as in that picture, like she’s about… well, about your age. Fifteen or sixteen?" definitely Rick's and editors' fault — that's Annabeth's words.
…I would complain how Thalia wasn't really "on her own" for years, because the first thing Amaltheia did is lead her to Luke so she wouldn't be alone (I guess technically he wrote TDOLC later, right?), but whatever.
It's very strange that Annabeth couldn't think of anything after "lupa" even though most demigods understand Latin (yes, Greek too), and this is a very well-known myth, especially considering all the other hints about Rome. I don't think this stupidity is doing Annabeth any favor.

Name: Sandra Michelle O’Connell
Age: 12 years old
Born: 4th of August, 1993
From: Verona, Wisconsin
Current Residence: Hermes Cabin/My mother's house
Mortal Parent: Nicole Rose O’Connell
Godly Parent: Hermes
Siblings: No full siblings. All godly children of Hermes are half-siblings.
Friends: Silena Beauregard, Clarisse La Rue, Luke Castellan, Charles Beckendorf, Annabeth Chase, Juniper, Piper McLean, Thalia Grace, Jason Grace
Nicknames: Sandy, Shelly
Fatal Flaw: Will never let go
Timeline:I want to shift to the moment the books start with all the memories I have scripted and I improvise what I do after that.
Special Events-Every year, on my birthday, my friends organize a party in the woods for me. I always act surprised, even though I know it's coming. This doesn't happen during war time or after Luke betrayed us. After the Second Titan War, I discover my identity as a genderqueer aroace person.
I dye my hair again every time it fades to the color Silena gives me next. I ask her for the new dye like: “What’s the next color? I'm sure it's to *dye* for.” and then she rolls her eyes playfully and answers with whatever color she has. After her death, I always dye ask the mirror, “What’s the next color? I'm sure it's to *dye* for.” I almost never finish the sentence, crying before I say the pun.
Wisconsin House Appearance: My room in the house is decorated with sunflowers with red petals. The walls are painted badly from when I was a kid and had access to my mom's wall-paint. She never painted it over and talks incessantly about it to her friends about “her little artist”. My bed has a light brown wooden frame and a small single mattress. My sheets are red and my blanket/pillow is a pale sunflower yellow. Hidden in the stitching of my blanket reads the words “Miles away, still not apart”. It's my blanket at home’s twin.
Cabin Bunk Appearance: My cabin bunk has a little hidden box under my mattress that holds soda pop-tops on a charm bracelet. I was making it for Juniper as a gesture of recycling. She adored the sentiment, but said I should keep it. It is next to my camp necklace and piercings. My blanket and pillow are a pale sunflower yellow and hidden in the stitching reads the words: “Ever remember, never forget”. It was a gift from my mom.
Clothing: My clothing is always plain. Just a camp tee and jeans. Even when I'm back home I always have on a plain red shirt and black leggings/shorts. Any winter/summer clothes are black with red accents.
It's a really new script
bye this is such a vibe. 'there she goes' by the la's type shit I LOVE IT? the silena hair dye bit lowkey is making me depressed tho😋 also not percy not being one of your friends HELP LMAO, and the attention to detail in your room decor. i could never have the effort😭i love it already?? if this is one of your first scripts then i'm jealous of your sanity because my first scripts were NOT it smh. if you add more stuff plsss send !!

So here are my live reactions on the pjo finale:
- I’m not mentally ready for this yet
- Long episode tho :)
- Omg Luke opening gave me chills
- OH THEY DID HAVE THE SWORD TRAINING I WAS SO CONFUSED ABOUT THAT FIRST
- But why are they flashbacks and not just something we saw in ep2?
- I’m still confused on why they chose to reveal the Kronos thing already
- Why is Percy not wearing Annabeths necklace yet 🥺
- Damn slay Percy
- The fight didn’t disappoint I’d say
- Wait are they on Montauk 🥹
- The “please” 😭😂
- “I’m done running from monsters” babes you only just started
- AWWW there is the necklace 🥹
- I feel like Luke mentioning Annabeths arachnophobia is so random even tho he explained it 😂
- Oh hello Zeus
- That is one hell of a good casting choice for Zeus, appearance wise
- Okay Zeus letting Percy go already felt way too easy lol
- Percy you are so lucky
- They’re making Poseidon way too good of a father tho I’m sorry
- Oh I’m gonna listen to their Ancient Greek convo later and slower because I love nitpicking hihi
- I’m not sure whether I like that they changed the Greek coming natural thing, because on one side it feels like an unnecessary change, but on the other side I can still be delusional and think I’m a demigod, because Ancient Greek does not come naturally to me at all sadly
- Wait but does that still mean all demigods have dyslexia (and adhd)? I don’t remember whether they talked about it earlier in the series
- I will be so mad if Annabeth doesn’t have dyslexia and adhd (and still is also a bookworm, we’ve seen her being a nerd but not necessarily a bookworm)
- Awwww Percabeth hug
- Annabeth and Lukes relationship in this interaction was done perfectly
- Does Percy already suspect Luke now?
- That’s one hell of an accusation Percy
- But you know since he figured out about Kronos too it makes sense
- Backbiter name drop yas
- “This isn’t you” okay but how long do you actually know him Percy lol
- I’m very confused on what Luke is doing honestly
- What is he opening? And is the H on purpose, supposed to represent Hermes?
- Oh oh Annabeth is here
- Oh don’t know how to feel about that
- I do know that Leah made me cry, gods the betrayal in her eyes 🥺
- Really not doing the “names are powerful” thing huh😂
- Jason is so perfect for Dionysus
- “It’s a tree, Seaweed Brain, it doesn’t express opinions” 😂
- Leahs hair is so beautiful
- It feels so sudden that she goes to see her dad now, but I don’t remember whether it was less sudden in the books lol
- Annabeth not know what Disneyland is, oh my baby 🥺
- FREDRICK YOU BETTER SHOW HER A MOVIE THIS TIME
- “Go, be a kid” Percy is saying what we’re all thinking
- The trio is trioing 🥹
- What is happening
- That is FOUL
- What is happening part 2
- Yes please listen to your mom, don’t call him grandpa 😂
- I am patiently waiting for the Medusa Gabe scene here
- Please tell me there’s an after credit scene and it happens then
- Every time I watch the credits and every time I feel like it’s not the same
- YES ITS HAPPENING
- I have thoughts on the changes of Gabe turning into a statue but I cannot formulate them yet lol
- Ohmygod there’s a documentary
- Watching that tomorrow
Now the season is done I do wanna make an actual review of what I like and dislike both adaptation and just as a show wise

Chapter 16: (PIPER XV)- HEARTBREAKS ARE RATED E FOR EVERYONE
Thalia eyed Piper’s name at the top with a bit of trepidation. She was not looking forward to hearing anymore nightmares from the poor girl and wished she knew how a phone worked to give her a call.
PIPER XV
PIPER WOKE UP AND IMMEDIATELY GRABBED a mirror.
“Awww, no dragon reaction?” Leo groaned, though he did realize the book was clearly rewinding on the timeline. Now he’d have to wait for Piper to catch up!
Nobody seemed to have much sympathy for him except Jason also grumbling at this book taking forever.
“Less than twelve hours and she’s already been converted?” Thalia sighed. “At least it took Nico some terror in the Labyrinth to die on that aesthetic.”
“Hey!” Nico scowled, “watch where you gutter stomp in your own puddle! And if you must know, it helps me move through the shadows better!”*
“Right, and I should get a nose ring to help me be a better conductor,” Thalia grinned as she snapped, fully prepared to continue he was actually stealing her look and that she’d need proof of that claim, when-
“You would too if Aprhoidte cursed you,” Percy reminded, derailing the both of them.
Thalia huffed in agreement to keep reading.
Everyone else sat in awed silence the children of the big three just had a lovely quarrel and then managed to break it off without world war three happening.
What were the gods so worried about again?
There were plenty of those in the Aphrodite cabin. She sat on her bunk, looked at her reflection and groaned.
She was still gorgeous.
“An honest horror. Did she even try rubbing mud on her face- no wait, that’s a beauty thing too,” Annabeth frowned.
“This is one of those unique experiences I can’t even pray I’ll never get or Aphrodite will curse me next,” Percy shivered at the idea. Yeah it might be cool to not wake up looking like a train wreck once, but the oddity of it wouldn’t last past the broken mirror for him.
Last night after the campfire, she’d tried everything. She messed up her hair, washed the makeup off her face, cried to make her eyes red. Nothing worked. Her hair popped back to perfection.
“Did she try hacking it off more?” Leo asked in complete sorrow for her. “She’s never minded it before.” He was suddenly miserable at the idea of Piper all alone, freaking out her body had been hijacked by her mom, and he’d just waltzed off without a care. Some friend he was.
“Not sure who I’d trust in this camp with scissors to be honest,” Jason winced at where she’d go to get them. He couldn’t even hope he’d offered her any comfort, it would just stay labeled in the awkward category from now until forever with his stupid mouth.
“More than half of us run around with swords,” Percy looked at him strangely.
“Exactly! Ask for some trimmers and you pull out Riptide! It wouldn’t go well,” Jason huffed.
The magic makeup reapplied itself. Her eyes refused to get puffy or bloodshot.
“That is easily one of the rudest thing I’ve heard these gods do to someone,” Percy frowned.
“That’s because you don’t read the rest of the myths you're supposed to,” but Annabeth agreed this was pretty dang rude. She really couldn’t even guess how long the curse was going to last for the poor girl, she’d never paid attention to their traditions. She’d never had much to do with them, though in later years that had been on purpose as she avoided the lot, less her brain wander to people it shouldn’t. Silena had been the exception, because she never brought up Luke or Percy unless invited.
She would’ve changed clothes, but she had nothing to change into. The other Aphrodite campers offered her some (laughing behind her back, she was sure), but each outfit was even more fashionable and ridiculous than what she had on.
“Seriously?” Leo scowled. “Not one of them had an old pair of comfy PJ’s? They all sleep in designer lace and chiffon!?”
“I’m grateful for the first time poor Piper didn’t come with us,” Jason agreed. He’d offer her all of his built up camp shirts to sleep in at minimum.
Now, after a horrible night’s sleep, still no change. Piper normally looked like a zombie in the morning, but her hair was styled like a supermodel’s and her skin was perfect. Even that horrible zit at the base of her nose, which she’d had for so many days she’d started to call it Bob, had disappeared.
“What is wrong with this mess when we can’t even be grateful a zit’s been vanquished?” Will sighed.
“Just like every gift from the gods,” Nico agreed. He found it personally amusing that Piper had chosen that particular name as he glanced at Percy, but he was just chuckling without a care in the world…and then he was left to his own devices wondering at the strange habits of naming zits instead of just making them vanish from your face with enough concentration and very careful shadow manipulation?
She growled in frustration and raked her fingers through her hair. No use. The do just popped back into place. She looked like Cherokee Barbie.
Thalia’s laugh managed to sound wounded and amused all at once for her long standing joke in this cabin having a horrible sting on Piper. She wished she’d make a visit to camp soon, just to update Annabeth, and maybe kidnap this girl out of pity.
From across the cabin, Drew called, “Oh, honey, it won’t go away.” Her voice dripped with false sympathy. “Mom’s blessing will last at least another day. Maybe a week if you’re lucky.”
Piper gritted her teeth. “A week?”
The other Aphrodite kids—about a dozen girls and five guys —smirked and snickered at her discomfort.
“Really feeling the comradery,” Hazel muttered, tucking her hands into Nico’s jacket in relief.
“They’re not all bad,” Will said instantly, but they could tell it was a practiced reflex as he winced at how bad this was coming off. **“Melanie Martinez hangs out with one of my brothers a lot and she seems nice.” It wasn’t the greatest defense, since he hadn’t really spent any time around her, but Melanie was a great singer and offered free piano lessons to anyone who asked which was how she and Jerry started hanging out.
Where the piano had come from, he had a feeling Chiron didn’t know and hadn’t wanted to ask as it took up residence in the amphitheater and would probably be harder to get rid of now than was worth it.
Piper knew she should play cool, not let them get under her skin. She’d dealt with shallow, popular kids plenty of times. But this was different. These were her brothers and sisters, even if she had nothing in common with them, and how Aphrodite had managed to have so many kids so close in age … Never mind. She didn’t want to know.
“I swear she has a stopwatch or something,” Thalia rolled her eyes and prattled off with an old smirk. “Oops, been more than a year, better pop back down to Earth and make sure my cabin’s flooded with more kids!”
“We really should find a way to separate you from your sisters from time to time,” Jason sighed. “They’re a bad influence.”
Thalia scoffed. “You think I need Phoebe to come up with that idea!” She was the one with the book, this could turn into a full on thing before Annabeth intervened, “quest? Saving the world and other vaguely important things? Lets see if Piper lives through this before we worry about how her siblings take her in?” It wasn’t even a problem she knew how to handle going forward, and that frustrated her to no end. The rest of them could hardly make Drew act better towards any new Aphrodite kids coming in.
“Don’t worry, hon.” Drew blotted her fluorescent lipstick. “You’re thinking you don’t belong here? We couldn’t agree more. Isn’t that right, Mitchell ?”
One of the guys flinched. “Um, yeah. Sure.”
Thalia’s scowl deepened past frustration as she imagined Drew waking up with gum in her hair, in her makeup, and all her clothes for the foreseeable future until she decided to act like a human being with a heart. Maybe she’d even get creative and transport some worms in too.
“Mmm-hmm.” Drew took out her mascara and checked her lashes. Everyone else watched, not daring to speak.
“Is it too soon to offer beheading as a solution?” Thalia asked.
“Little bit,” Percy said, but not as if he really meant it.
“So anyways, people, fifteen minutes until breakfast. The cabin’s not going to clean itself! And Mitchell, I think you’ve learned your lesson. Right, sweetie? So you’re on garbage patrol just for today, mm-kay? Show Piper how it’s done, ’cause I have a feeling she’ll have that job soon—if she survives her quest. Now, get to work, everybody! It’s my bathroom time!”
Everybody started rushing around, making beds and folding clothes, while Drew scooped up her makeup kit, hair dryer, and brush and marched into the bathroom.
Someone inside yelped, and a girl about eleven was kicked out, hastily wrapped in towels with shampoo still in her hair.
Thalia was seething with anger, but she kept reading through gritted teeth among the growing grumbles and snide comments.
The door slammed shut, and the girl started to cry. A couple of older campers comforted her and wiped the bubbles out of her hair.
Thalia sighed in relief as she focused her anger on not launching a missile arrow into that cabin right now. That’s all she’d wanted to see, just a few decent ones in there.
“Seriously?” Piper said to no one in particular. “You let Drew treat you like this?”
A few kids shot Piper nervous looks, like they might actually agree, but they said nothing.
The campers kept working, though Piper couldn’t see why the cabin needed much cleaning. It was a life-size dollhouse, with pink walls and white window trim. The lace curtains were pastel blue and green, which of course matched the sheets and feather comforters on all the beds.
The guys had one row of bunks separated by a curtain, but their section of the cabin was just as neat and orderly as the girls’. Something was definitely unnatural about that.
“Can’t believe Drew doesn't have sheep painted into the wall, she’s not subtle enough to explain it any other way,” Annabeth grumbled.
Every camper had a wooden camp chest at the foot of their bunk with their name painted on it, and Piper guessed that the clothes in each chest were neatly folded and color coordinated. The only bit of individualism was how the campers decorated their private bunk spaces. Each had slightly different pictures tacked up of whatever celebrities they thought were hot. A few had personal photos, too, but most were actors or singers or whatever.
Piper hoped she might not see The Poster.
“Oh, no,” but at least now Thalia sounded indulgent and a little sorry. Piper was clearly no more fond of her dads infamy than she was of her own.
It had been almost a year since the movie, and she thought by now surely everyone had torn down those old tattered advertisements and tacked up something newer. But no such luck. She spotted one on the wall by the storage closet, in the middle of a collage of famous heartthrobs.
The title was lurid red: King of Sparta. Under that, the poster showed the leading man—a three-quarters shot of bare-chested bronze flesh, with ripped pectorals and six-pack abs. He was clad in only a Greek war kilt and a purple cape, sword in hand. He looked like he’d just been rubbed in oil, his short black hair gleaming and rivulets of sweat pouring off his rugged face, those dark sad eyes facing the camera as if to say, I will kill your men and steal your women! Ha-ha!
“A role he played quite well,” Annabeth chuckled.
“We need to have a movie night to watch it,” Thalia grinned.
“I’d, wait, until Piper’s there to throw popcorn at the screen with you,” Leo said hastily. She would have been thrilled to come in here and meet a whole group of people who were too out of touch to care about her famous dad. Now that was still mostly true, but Leo knew she’d still rather be in on that particular narrative.
It was the most ridiculous poster of all time. Piper and her dad had had a good laugh over it the first time they saw it.
Then the movie made a bajillion dollars. The poster graphic popped up everywhere. Piper couldn’t get away from it at school, walking down the street, even online. It became The Poster, the most embarrassing thing in her life. And yeah, it was a picture of her dad.
She turned away so no one would think she was staring at it. Maybe when everyone went to breakfast she could tear it down and they wouldn’t notice.
She tried to look busy, but she didn’t have any extra clothes to fold. She straightened her bed, then realized the top blanket was the one Jason had wrapped around her shoulders last night. She picked it up and pressed it to her face. It smelled of wood smoke, but unfortunately not of Jason. He was the only person who’d been genuinely nice to her after the claiming, like he cared about how she felt, not just about her stupid new clothes. God, she’d wanted to kiss him, but he’d seemed so uncomfortable, almost scared of her. She couldn’t really blame him. She’d been glowing pink.
Jason’s ratcheting unease at her fondness quickly fell off into his own affectionate laughter. “Let’s hope her mom doesn't make a habit of making her glow like a rainbow.”
“I don’t know, can’t say I wouldn’t at least enjoy that power for personal entertainment if I had to pick,” Hazel chuckled. Piper’s curse sounded dreadful to her, but even calling it a curse felt laughably under-selling what a real curse was like.
“I’d kiss you no matter what color you glowed,” Percy grinned at Annabeth.
“You’re such a dork,” she chuckled as she kissed his cheek.
“’Scuse me,” said a voice by her feet. The garbage patrol guy, Mitchell, was crawling around on all fours, picking up chocolate wrappers and crumpled notes from under the bunk beds. Apparently the Aphrodite kids weren’t one hundred percent neat freaks after all.
She moved out of his way. “What’d you do to make Drew mad?”
He glanced over at the bathroom door to make sure it was still closed. “Last night, after you were claimed, I said you might not be so bad.”
“I say we pitch Drew into the fire and put Mitchell in charge,” Percy sighed.
“He does mean the magical fire that only burns marshmallows,” Annabeth promised.
“He does?” Percy asked in surprise. Drew was starting to remind him of Kelly and it was hard to keep his monsters straight sometimes.
“Let’s hold off on immolation to see if someone else wants to volunteer and dethrone Drew,” Nico offered peaceably.
Percy rolled his eyes and muttered something that vaguely sounded like agreement.
It wasn’t much of a compliment, but Piper was stunned. An Aphrodite kid had actually stood up for her?
“Thanks,” she said.
Mitchell shrugged. “Yeah, well. See where it got me. But for what it’s worth, welcome to Cabin Ten.”
A girl with blond pigtails and braces raced up with a pile of clothes in her arms. She looked around furtively like she was delivering nuclear materials.
“I brought you these,” she whispered.
“Piper, meet Lacy,” Mitchell said, still crawling around on the floor.
“I didn’t even know Lacy could be a name, who would curse their child like that?” Thalia said crosseyed.***
“I’ve heard kids mispronounce your name three different ways, don’t even start Thals,” Percy rolled his eyes.
“I wasn’t mocking her, I was honestly surprised,” she insisted.
“You’re also just as stunned she didn’t just go by her middle name when she grew the slightest bit of independence,” Annabeth rolled her eyes too.
“Fair,” she acknowledged.
“Hi,” Lacy said breathlessly. “You can change clothes. The blessing won’t stop you. This is just, you know, a backpack, some rations, ambrosia and nectar for emergencies, some jeans, a few extra shirts, and a warm jacket. The boots might be a little snug. But—well—we took up a collection. Good luck on your quest!”
Thalia sounded genuinely touched, nobody had ever done something like that for her before…not since Luke. The Hunters looked out for each other, but they were very independent too in Camp. They were always happy to help each other out, but being the Lieutenant left her with the often uneasy task of being in charge and offering support more often than she was comfortable giving it, rather than just handling things on her own. She was honestly happy Piper was getting this kind of sibling experience.
Lacy dumped the things on the bed and started to hurry away, but Piper caught her arm. “Hold on. At least let me thank you! Why are you rushing off?”
Lacy looked like she might shake apart from nervousness. “Oh, well—”
“Drew might find out,” Mitchell explained.
“I might have to wear the shoes of shame!” Lacy gulped.
“The what?” Piper asked.
Lacy and Mitchell both pointed to a black shelf mounted in the corner of the room, like an altar. Displayed on it were a hideous pair of orthopedic nurse’s shoes, bright white with thick soles.
“Errr, are the shoes hiding, in them, or?” Percy asked.
“My first thought was giant clown shoes. Plain white seems mild in comparison?” Annabeth agreed, studying the book.
“Bet it's hell to get monster dust out of those things?” Thalia shrugged.
“Pffft, like those kids get monster dust on them on a regular basis,” Nico scoffed.
“None of you guys are funny,” but Will sighed and sounded more exhausted than like he was really reprimanding them. They really did seem confused.
“I had to wear them for a week once,” Lacy whimpered. “They don’t go with anything!”
“Doesn’t white, go with, everything?” Leo asked.
“You couldn't own a piece of white clothing for an hour,” Jason smirked as he looked up from his own drawing.
“Guilty,” Leo agreed, turning back to the smudge marks and stains on his paper he was somehow insisting were improvements on Festus’s power core.
Jason smiled in triumph and turned back to doodle a few more lines onto his paper. They’d just been a lot of stick figures at first, ruler straight and oddly placed, but once he started shading in the back work and etched a few curves, he realized he’d been drawing columns. Rows and rows of supports, holding nothing but the edges of the pages, but he liked it all the same.
“And there’re worse punishments,” Mitchell warned. “Drew can charmspeak, see? Not many Aphrodite kids have that power; but if she tries hard enough, she can get you to do some pretty embarrassing things.
“Okay, now that’s got to be against the rules! No way Chiron lets her get away with that, personal cabin blah blah whatever aside,” Hazel frowned.
“It is,” Annabeth agreed. “But good luck getting anyone to prove it.” She was already coming up blank on how to bring Drew’s reign to a halt without basically just grounding her in the basement of the Big House. People, aside from Percy, were really hard to factor into strategies.
Piper, you’re the first person I’ve seen in a long time who is able to resist her.”
“Charmspeak …” Piper remembered last night, the way the crowd at the campfire had swayed back and forth between Drew’s opinion and hers. “You mean, like, you could talk someone into doing things. Or … giving you things. Like a car?”
“Oh, don’t give Drew any ideas!” Lacy gasped.
“But yeah,” Mitchell said. “She could do that.”
“So that’s why she’s head counselor,” Piper said. “She convinced you all?”
Mitchell picked a nasty wad of gum from under Piper’s bed. “Nah, she inherited the post when Silena Beauregard died in the war. Drew was second oldest. Oldest camper automatically gets the post, unless somebody with more years or more completed quests wants to challenge, in which case there’s a duel, but that hardly ever happens. Anyway, we’ve been stuck with Drew in charge since August. She decided to make some, ah, changes in the way the cabin is run.”
“Yes, I did!” Suddenly Drew was there, leaning against the bunk. Lacy squeaked like a guinea pig and tried to run, but Drew put an arm out to stop her. She looked down at Mitchell.
“I think you missed some trash, sweetie. You’d better make another pass.”
“Yeah, he clearly forgot to throw out Drew’s wardrobe,” Nico rolled his eyes.
Piper glanced toward the bathroom and saw that Drew had dumped everything from the bathroom waste bin—some pretty nasty things—all over the floor.
“A hat!” Thalia popped the side of her head. “Her outfit is clearly missing a hat!”
“With the trash as like, a rim, or just plaster that over her clothes?” Percy asked conversationally.
Annabeth really wanted to take the book away to distract these two, but she was kind of worried that would just leave them with more free time as she cleared her throat and vaguely mentioned saving the world again. Thalia was clearly only mildly convinced to keep going.
Mitchell sat up on his haunches. He glared at Drew like he was about to attack (which Piper would’ve paid money to see), but finally he snapped, “Fine.”
“She should have offered him the money,” Percy sighed.
“I don’t think she kept her wallet on her,” Thalia said in regret.
Drew smiled. “See, Piper, hon, we’re a good cabin here. A good family!
“Maybe if you're comparing it to Hera’s version,” Will said snidely.
Silena Beauregard, though … you could take a warning from her. She was secretly passing information to Kronos in the Titan War, helping the enemy.”
Thalia froze with a gobsmacked look on her face. It hadn’t really registered until this moment that was in fact true. Yet another child of Aphrodite was already being manipulated, being forced to spy, playing as a pawn. It wasn’t a line of succession she thought Silena would be proud to brag about.
But Silena had been wrong to trust in Luke, to keep spying for him instead of forcing some other path. There had been no easy options regardless. Drew was a tyrannical little shit who should have all the souls of her shoes ripped out for being like this, but that didn’t make her wholly wrong…these situations were uncomfortably similar…
And Drew didn’t even know it! She was tormenting this poor girl completely blind!
The subdued way she kept reading surprised them. She was still angry, but nine times less so. Now she was just, sad.
Drew smiled all sweet and innocent, with her glittery pink makeup and her blow-dried hair lush and smelling like nutmeg. She looked like any popular teenage girl from any high school. But her eyes were as cold as steel. Piper got the feeling Drew was looking straight into her soul, pulling out her secrets.
Helping the enemy.
“Oh, none of the other cabins talk about it,” Drew confided. “They act like Silena Beauregard was a hero.”
Drew was lucky she wasn’t up here now, or Percy would have punted her to the lake from where she was from that alone. “I know the perfect punishment,” Percy smirked in a way that really should have scared Drew senseless. “Let’s sick Clarisse on her.”
“You wouldn’t live without your dessert privileges Perce, let’s set aside drastic measures for now,” Annabeth placated.
“She sacrificed her life to make things right,” Mitchell grumbled. “She was a hero.”
“Mmm-hmm,” Drew said. “Another day on garbage patrol, Mitchell.
Percy’s jaw was aching with the urge to spit acid in this girl's face, maybe not as literally as had once been done to Silena, but he had a few choice words about what being a hero meant and who got to say what about it!
But anyways, Silena lost track of what this cabin is about. We match up cute couples at camp! Then we break them apart and start over!
Annabeth was stunned into silence, her face flushed with such a deep anger Percy scooted away a bit in terror. She vividly remembered Drew always making jokes about winning Percy over and hating her for it, but the sudden realization she may not have even liked him at all, but was treating him as part of this sick game!? Oh, Drew had better watch that fat head of hers when Annabeth could bother to spare her a thought again!
It’s the best fun ever.
“Is ripping someone’s tongue out one of those things ambrosia and nectar can heal? Thought just popped into my mind for no reason, new here,” Leo asked almost casually. Jason felt eyes on him though and looked up from his drawing to see Leo watching the book and him alternatively, and he felt a warm flash at clearly having taken that as a threat against him and Piper, when he didn’t particularly have any strong feelings on the matter. He’d even play along with the act if it helped Piper to cope with her siblings better.
“Yes, nectar actually has fixed that,” Will sounded a little too enthusiastic explaining this. “It’s a pretty complicated process stitching the tongue back in, depending on the kind of damage that removed it, but swish a bit around in their mouth after and it can heal if you manage to apply it fast enough.”
“How many people-” Percy began in concern.
“Oh I only heard Chiron managed to do it once,” Will sighed. “It would be so cool to see in person though and study how the nerves mend themselves back together, in what order, how quickly speech can be accomplished after the procedure!”
Nico was looking at him with interest, and then said something that might have been in English if they understood nerd words about whatever Mythomagic card that reminded him of. Will grinned in delight and said he hadn’t found that one yet and they were all seriously concerned this was about to spiral out of control. ****
It was moments like this where Percy kind of understood his odd friendship with Nico as he turned away to Thalia before that escalated into other gross procedures he wanted to know nothing about.
We don’t have any business getting involved in other stuff like wars and quests. I certainly haven’t been on any quests. They’re a waste of time!”
“I finally figured out how to spell hypocrite! It’s only got four letters!” Percy grinned.
“Do me a favor and let me check your next English assignment you hand in,” Annabeth said, more as if she’d read that chaos and hand it back than go at it with a red marker.
“I feel like next time I see Piper I should hug her and thank her just for existing,” Jason sighed.
Lacy raised her hand nervously. “But last night you said you wanted to go on a—”
Drew glared at her, and Lacy’s voice died.
“Awwww,” Thalia said again, laughing right through her pity for the poor girl. She’d teach Lacy a few basic skills with a throwing knife and hopefully help boost her confidence.
“Most of all,” Drew continued, “we certainly don’t need our image tarnished by spies, do we, Piper?”
Piper tried to answer, but she couldn’t. There was no way Drew could know about her dreams or her dad’s kidnapping, was there?
It didn’t seem likely, but Annabeth grimaced it could be a possibility. She might not be acting like it right now, but Drew was a demigod same as any of them. Anyone in this camp could have dreams that connected them all together. Drew very well could have seen Piper’s dad being kidnapped, heard that awful voice threatening Piper, or even this Mistress herself could be whispering to her to sow dissent among the place.
“It’s too bad you won’t be around,” Drew sighed. “But if you survive your little quest, don’t worry, I’ll find somebody to match up with you. Maybe one of those gross Hephaestus guys.
“Hey?” Leo frowned. “We’ve got the best showers in the whole camp!”
“I knew it,” Annabeth frowned.
Or Clovis? He’s pretty repulsive.”
“Rude,” Jason frowned, oddly defensive of the guy who had made an effort to get out of bed and made an attempt to sort out his memories.
“Jace, buddy, hope you’ve been keeping up better than that,” Percy rolled his eyes. “I wouldn’t make Drew date Drew right now.”
Drew looked her over with a mix of pity and disgust. “Honestly, I didn’t think it was possible for Aphrodite to have an ugly child, but … who was your father? Was he some sort of mutant, or—”
“Tristan McLean,” Piper snapped.
As soon as she said it, she hated herself. She never, ever played the “famous dad” card. But Drew had driven her over the edge. “My dad’s Tristan McLean.”
“Well that ought to shut her up for a minute,” Thalia said in relief, wondering if she’d be lucky enough to finish her whole chapter without that nags voice.
“I’ve never seen Piper mad enough to use the famous dad card,” Leo said in a bit of awe.
“How long were you two at the Wilderness School together?” Jason asked with interest.
“Pushing six months,” Leo said, it was getting close to the longest time he’d been anywhere. Piper had been a big reason as to why, they’d instantly clicked. Though a part of him now suspected his court mandated sentence there, and Piper just so happening to get this place in the vast options available to Jane The Witch might have had some godly nudging.
The stunned silence was gratifying for a few seconds, but Piper felt ashamed of herself. Everybody turned and looked at The Poster, her dad flexing his muscles for the whole world to see.
“Oh my god!” half the girls screamed at once.
“Sweet!” a guy said. “The dude with the sword who killed that other dude in that movie?”
“He is so hot for an old guy,” a girl said, and then she blushed. “I mean I’m sorry. I know he’s your dad. That’s so weird!”
“It’s weird, all right,” Piper agreed.
“Can you imagine hearing that every day, for any length of time?” Annabeth rubbed her ear in disgust, and Thalia really wasn't reading that obnoxiously.
“Yes,” Will muttered with a wince.
Thalia gave him a vaguely apologetic smile for once saying the same about his dad.
“It gets old, we actually spent some fun times making up names for each other at one point,” Leo grinned. “If she ever introduces herself as Shania Twang, just know you’re being had.”
“And what was yours?” Jason asked.
“I, erm, never settled on one I liked,” Leo said quickly. He’d never want to change the name his mom gave him, even as a joke.
“Do you think you could get me his autograph?” another girl asked.
Piper forced a smile. She couldn’t say, If my dad survives....
“Sure she could, it would just be awkward as hell,” Percy grinned, that kind of way that was hoping Piper would laugh along for knowing that wasn’t funny but he was trying to make her laugh anyways.
“That girl didn’t even offer anything for that! Piper shouldn’t promise something for nothing anyways,” Leo sniffed.
“Sure she can, if she’s being nice,” Will frowned.
“Or an idiot,” Thalia smirked at the potential way to get Piper into being head of this cabin was just some easy bribery.
“Knock it off Thals,” Jason sighed. Which made her keep reading rather quickly, Annabeth noted.
“Yeah, no problem,” she managed.
The girl squealed in excitement, and more kids surged forward, asking a dozen questions at once.
“Have you ever been on the set?”
“Do you live in a mansion?”
“Do you have lunch with movie stars?”
“That’s actually a good question,” Percy admitted. There were at least a few it might be cool to meet just to ask how some certain scenes had worked.
“Had to happen eventually, probability and all that,” Annabeth grinned.
“She has,” Leo agreed, “but she won’t tell me which ones, which means they must have been super lame.”
“Have you had your rite of passage?”
That one caught Piper off guard. “Rite of what?” she asked.
The girls and guys giggled and shoved each other around like this was an embarrassing topic.
“The rite of passage for an Aphrodite child,” one explained. “You get someone to fall in love with you. Then you break their heart. Dump them. Once you do that, you’ve proven yourself worthy of Aphrodite.”
Thalia looked like a vole had just tried to burrow into her mouth. “That was foul! What did I just say?”
“Wow these guys are the worst. This is a, thing around here?” Nico asked in concern.
“Not one they announce to the world, but,” Will sighed. He’d heard about it in passing and hoped they were just baseless rumors.
“Can we please bail Piper out of this place before she has to move in?” Leo frowned.
“Can we please build Hestia a cabin for kids who don’t want to sleep in their parents cabin?” Jason sighed.
Annabeth looked at him like he’d just switched to Latin, and she’d understood all of it. “That’s, actually not the worst idea.”
“Thanks,” Jason said, she really knew how to say a compliment like an insult.
Annabeth shook herself and really smiled at him. “No, seriously, we’ve got it all built, but it’s just honorary. We’ll have to talk to Chiron about circumstances though and how it would work around the rest of camp.”
Piper stared at the crowd to see if they were joking. “Break someone’s heart on purpose? That’s terrible!”
The others looked confused.
“Why?” a guy asked.
“I’m going to break his nose and ask him if that hurt. That’s how stupid that sounded,” Percy rolled his eyes.
“I mean, I guess, when you grew up in that environment, some things are just normal to you and not to others,” Hazel offered half-heartedly.
Percy just frowned at her but didn’t argue the point. Her horse picture was really good, even upside down.
“Oh my god!” a girl said. “I bet Aphrodite broke your dad’s heart! I bet he never loved anyone again, did he? That’s so romantic!
They all vividly remembered that was actually exactly true, the sadness lingering in Tristan McLean’s eyes. Did all of Aphrodite's mortal lovers go through the same? How did her own kids seem so unphased by this? It really was one of those mysteries none of them had a clue about in their own backyard.
When you have your rite of passage, you can be just like Mom!”
“Forget it!” Piper yelled, a little louder than she’d intended. The other kids backed away. “I’m not breaking somebody’s heart just for a stupid rite of passage!”
Which of course gave Drew a chance to take back control.
“Ugh,” Thalia groaned, smashing the book against her forehead. Her choice was now to go back hoping they’d keep interrogating the poor girl and loading Artemis with extra ammunition or Drew talking again, and they were pretty equally bad choices! How was Piper’s chapters somehow worse than Leo and Jason’s combined?!
“Well, there you go!” she cut in. “Silena said the same thing. She broke the tradition, fell in love with that Beckendorf boy, and stayed in love. If you ask me, that’s why things ended tragically for her.”
“She can’t honestly be claiming no other Aphrodite kid has refused to play along with that tradition and started a curse?” Will frowned.
“You know Will, add it to the list of things we need to discuss with her,” Thalia said in a violently pleasant tone of voice. It made him want to cringe behind Nico, but he resisted.
“That’s not true!” Lacy squeaked, but Drew glared at her, and she immediately melted back into the crowd.
“Hardly matters,” Drew continued, “because, Piper, hon, you couldn’t break anyone’s heart anyway.
“She can break something much more important with that knife,” but Percy had a strange expression on his face. He’d accidentally broken Annabeth’s heart more than once, and that wasn’t the kind of thing you could heal with godly food and drink.
Drew had apparently never learned one of the most important things Silena or Aphrodite had never had to teach him. Love was the strongest thing a demigod could use to get where you needed to go. Breaking it apart was never something to brag about.
And this nonsense about your dad being Tristan McLean—that’s so begging for attention.”
Several of the kids blinked uncertainly.
“She really does just sound desperate right there,” Thalia sneered.
“I want to see someone shove those nurse shoes into her mouth so bad right now, Leo huffed.
“That’s not, what, that saying, means,” but Annabeth was clearly only reluctantly correcting him.
“What saying?” Leo asked, and she couldn't tell if he was being serious.
“You mean he’s not her dad?” one asked.
Drew rolled her eyes. “Please. Now, it’s time for breakfast, people, and Piper here has to start that little quest. So let’s get her packed and get her out of here!”
“I think she’s afraid of Piper,” Jason smirked. Drew seemed oddly eager to end this conversation all of a sudden, and he doubted it was to get to her eggs and bacon.
“I’m not sure she’s smart enough for that,” Nico rolled his eyes.
Drew broke up the crowd and got everyone moving. She called them “hon” and “dear,” but her tone made it clear she expected to be obeyed.
“Ugh,” Leo made a face. He’d been around a lot of people like that. There had been one disturbing dude who called all the foster kids in the house baby no matter their age. He hadn’t stuck around long enough to figure out if it was some kind of recurring demeaning insult or if the guy was just a weirdo.
Mitchell and Lacy helped Piper pack. They even guarded the bathroom while Piper went in and changed into a better traveling outfit. The hand-me-downs weren’t fancy—thank god—just well-worn jeans, a T-shirt, a comfortable winter coat, and hiking boots that fit perfectly. She strapped her dagger, Katoptris, to her belt.
When Piper came out, she felt almost normal again. The other campers were standing at their bunks while Drew came around and inspected. Piper turned to Mitchell and Lacy and mouthed, Thank you. Mitchell nodded grimly. Lacy flashed a full-braces smile. Piper doubted Drew had ever thanked them for anything.
Will frowned if anyone ever thanked the Aphrodite cabin for anything around here. They weren’t exactly the cabin anyone ran to for, anything. Except maybe the odd desperate kid for relationship advice, and they learned fast why that wasn’t the best idea.
She also noticed that the King of Sparta poster had been wadded up and thrown in the trash. Drew’s orders, no doubt. Even though Piper had wanted to take the poster down herself, now she was totally steamed.
Leo grinned at the idea of asking Piper for a few dozen signed ones. The horrified look on her face would be worth a laugh until he showed her the gorilla glue and offered a few fun suggestions of where Drew could find them for the rest of her life.
When Drew spotted her, she clapped in mock applause.
“Very nice! Our little quest girl all dressed in Dumpster clothes again. Now, off you go! No need to eat breakfast with us. Good luck with … whatever. Bye!”
Piper shouldered her bag. She could feel everyone else’s eyes on her as she walked to the door. She could just leave and forget about it. That would’ve been the easy thing. What did she care about this cabin, these shallow kids?
Except that some of them had tried to help her. Some of them had even stood up to Drew for her.
She turned at the door.
Thalia smiled, a little surprised but mostly relieved. If she went in there and ever tried to have words with these kids, it would never end well, too much inherited bad blood. Artemis didn’t usually go around advocating not to join her group though, so it was really vitalizing to see a child of Aphrodite doing it!
“You know, you all don’t have to follow Drew’s orders.”
The other kids shifted. Several glanced at Drew, but she looked too stunned to respond.
“Umm,” one managed, “she’s our head counselor.”
“And that’s what they invented anarchy for,” Percy grinned.
“Percy, no,” Annabeth sighed.
“Percy yes!” Thalia cackled.
“I really should find a way to separate them,” Jason groaned.
“Mmm, maybe save that for when we don’t need all the help we can get saving the world,” Leo shrugged.
Hazel was on Jason’s side, those two together scared her.
“She’s a tyrant,” Piper corrected. “You can think for yourselves. There’s got to be more to Aphrodite than this.”
“More than this,” one kid echoed.
“Think for ourselves,” a second muttered.
“People!” Drew screeched. “Don’t be stupid! She’s charm-speaking you.”
Thalia grimaced that made sense with them echoing her.
“Poor thing is being shipped off before she even has an idea of how to get a handle on that,” Will frowned.
“It’s not like it works on everyone all the time,” Leo protested, these guys just sounded dense to him. “She asks me to go get her extra ketchup packets and I throw them down her shirt, it’s not what she asked me to do at all.”
“Not sure about that defense man, but I see your point,” Jason chuckled.
“No,” Piper said. “I’m just telling the truth.”
At least, Piper thought that was the case. She didn’t understand exactly how this charmspeaking business worked, but she didn’t feel like she was putting any special power into her words. She didn’t want to win an argument by tricking people. That would make her no better than Drew. Piper simply meant what she said. Besides, even if she tried charmspeaking, she had a feeling it wouldn’t work very well on another charmspeaker like Drew.
“She learns fast,” Thalia already knew this but was nodding in approval again anyways. Even not here to hear it, Piper deserved the praise.
Drew sneered at her. “You may have a little power, Miss Movie Star. But you don’t know the first thing about Aphrodite. You have such great ideas? What do you think this cabin is about, then? Tell them. Then maybe I’ll tell them a few things about you, huh?”
Piper wanted to make a withering retort, but her anger turned to panic. She was a spy for the enemy, just like Silena Beauregard. An Aphrodite traitor. Did Drew know about that, or was she bluffing? Under Drew’s glare, her confidence began to crumble.
They all sighed and slumped in their seats, but really, none of them could have stood behind Piper and rooted for her in that moment either, not really. Whether Drew was just going to keep spitting nasty retorts around, really had some inkling about the fate of this quest and was choosing not to warn Jason, or just the general dislikable nature of this entire scene, they were more than happy it seemed to be coming to a close more than anything.
“Not this,” Piper managed. “Aphrodite is not about this.”
Then she turned and stormed out before the others could see her blushing.
Behind her, Drew started laughing. “Not this? Hear that, people? She doesn’t have a clue!”
Piper promised herself she would never ever go back to that cabin. She blinked away her tears and stormed across the green, not sure where she was going—until she saw the dragon swooping down from the sky.
“Festus really does know how to cut into a mood, doesn't he?” Thalia said in appreciation.
“My boy takes after me! I’m so proud!” Leo beamed, giving Hazel a moment to laugh as she wriggled out of her spot to get up and take the book again.

*Head cannon shared by SpringScrollFairy, and I ask you, how can you not love this?
** The song Doll House by Melanie Martinez was too appropriate not to make a reference to, but I, unlike RR, don’t like making random references that don’t make sense to the specific date/era of this story. Song recommended to me by marivictal. It’s not just my beta and bestie’s on here guys, do please offer your own suggestions of fun to come!
***This is not shade on anyone named Lacy. This is actually a hysterical personal moment because my mom has confided in me she considered naming me Lacy-Dawn before settling on my name. Like, that’s the equivalent of naming Percy, Lucky. I would have cut out any and all evidence of my life to the word before that hyphen and gone by Dawn, but this is beside the point and just personal contention.
****Inspired by a conversation I once had with SpringScrollFairy and has been living rent free in my head and I’ve been looking for an excuse to use it ever since.

Being Thalia and Jason's sibling
Also Y/n has no specific gender so anyone can read this also posted on my quotev
Also this is in the book versions of Grover, Thalia, Luke and Annabeth
Let's just say you're Jason's twin
Thalia is the tired mom since y'alls mother is a bitch
You and Jason have your own language as babies
Jason blabbing
Y/n blabbing back
Thalia: awwwe look at you two
The first time Thalia tried to give you a hair cut it went horrible..... you're hair never grew back right
Your first word was Lia you were trying to say Thalia but could only manage Lia
Also you have a fear of water so while Thalia's trying to give you a bath you're screeching like a banshee and then there's Jason who calm as fuck
Anytime Thalia gives you a hair cut you're hair ends up messy and short
Jason crawled and walked first but you flew errrr floated you couldn't yet control so you just kinda floated
Actually you're the reason Jason got his hands on stapler
Thalia turned her back for 1 minutes and in that minute two year old Y/n had floated to the counter grabbed the stapler and gave it to Jason
Thalia turned around just in time to see Jason about to eat the stapler
JASON NO!
Like previously stated Thalia is a tired mother
Little did y'all know it was about to go down hill very soon
7 year old Thalia carried two year old Y/n while Beryl carried two year old Jason
Beryl would've held you if you didn't bite her when she tried to pick you up
What Beryl didn't expect but probably should have was Thalia taking you with her when she went to go get the picnic basket
Once Beryl abandoned Jason Thalia took you and ran
That's how y'all met you're favorite Goat boy Grover after being on the run for a few days
You plucked some hair off Grover
You've "accidentally" called him father goat actually the first time you did it was accident then you called him that to tease him
Is that really goat fur ?
You've also accidentally shocked Grover a few times which earned you the nickname Sparky
You're offen used as a distraction for Thalia to steal food
Ok Y/n do what I taught you!
Cue 3 year old you wailing and people rushing over to you
Grover stays a few feet away but is still keeping a close eye on you because he's scared a stranger might actually try to kidnap you after a few minutes of you being coddled and questioned by strangers Grover scoops you up
"Oh Y/n there you! What have I told you about wandering off!"
Grover to you
"Thank you for finding my sibling they like to wander off."
Grover to the strangers as he carries you away to the spot Thalia told him to met her to with you
Grover is a tired dad
"Thalia how is hair dye important?"
Grover to Thalia because she stole hair dye food to but still
Like previously stated Grover is a tired dad of two soon to be four because a few years later you ran into two more demigods
Luke and Annabeth
Actually you got separated from Thalia and Grover that's how you met Luke and Annabeth
Luke was very confused and concerned about why this five old with a messy hair cut and random patches of hair dye in their hair was wandering around alone
Annabeth being the same age as you was skeptical but happy to find someone her age
" Hey kiddo are you hungry ?"
Luke to you
You let out a demonic screeching because stranger danger
That's how Thalia and Grover found you
Thalia slapped the back of your head not enough to bruise but enough to sting a little because you scared her when you wandered off
Luke , Thalia and Grover all hit it off
You and Annabeth took a few days to warn up to each other but once you did you two became inseparable after bonding over parental issues despite being 5 you both knew what parental issues were
You and Annabeth share a sleeping bag
Learning Luke was a better thief than Thalia since he stole enough to feed all of you and no offense to Thalia she barely stole enough to feed you, herself and Grover
That's actually how you started trusting Luke is he fed all of you
Also Luke gave you and Annabeth his blanket when it was freezing so there's that to
Sometimes you would hear Thalia talking to Luke about someone named Jason that name sounded so familiar to you but you couldn't quite put your finger on it
When it was to cold you, Annabeth, Thalia, Luke and Grover would all cuddle up together
Luke would try to read to you and Annabeth but y'all are dyslexic so he stop trying to read books and just started making up stories
Honestly life was good for 2 years
Up until the cyclops
Everyone in your group was affected but you were affected by it the worst
You see your beloved older sister get turned into a pine tree and you're heart is broken
You just didn't take care of yourself the next few days
Seven year old you couldn't comprehend seeing your older sister basically died in front of you
You're traumatized even more than you all ready were
Luke and Grover and Annabeth all took care of you
Then when your 10 Luke gets his quest
You, Annabeth and Grover are all terrified of losing him
So naturally you beg him to stay
He just ruffled you're hair and promised he would come back
Well he came but something seemed.....off about him
Oh and he has a good sized scar over his left eye
You asked Annabeth about him and you both just thought it was because it was a stressful quest
Oh how wrong you both were
Then a few years later When you and Annabeth where twelve
Percy jackson entered the camp

honestly like going through your asks i agree sm how underwhelming heroes of olympus was. like in the og series there was so much death, betrayal, and character development and in hoo we see percy and annabeth in tartarus (which i felt like their disappearance should have had waayy more of an affect on the rest of crew but without annbeth as their leader and percy as their glue how are they serving) and Nico's forced coming out ceremony (poor boy was tamazatized by cupid and ric didn't even delve into much more after that?).
gaea was so underwhleming and i don't belive at all that she could have been beaten after she was fully formed. like there was no actual counter against a primordial and percy and annabeth only defeated luke bcuz he killed himselves. like i don't think celestial bronze can actually do enough damage to kill a god, yet alone the earth! (divine weapons be looking a little enticing here) and at least with kronos their was a personal connection. like i get that she tried to kill the people in the prophecy like with leo but i felt like it was so long ago leo had already comes terms with his mom's death. there was no emotional charge that should have been there and the romans vs greeks was so disappointing. i didn;t like at all that the greeks were good and the romans were evil and i felt like jason was to easily accepting within greek ranks. like yeah i get it, greep camp is more chill but their was no promised internal hostility and it just felt like their big battle wasn;t that big of a mutal battle, just greeks tryan stop another invasion. and don;t get me started on the athena statue. that was written SO weird and it definitely should have been established way earlier in the series. and poor nico and reyna tryna haul it across the world when they could have contributed much more. their perspectives was such a snooze-fest and i was just like what the hell is this side-quest?
like the second series was more mature and professional writing wise so i expected much more blood and gore. every demigod was a tragedy is the og series so it was so weird to see everyone live happily ever after after. and like i felt like he forgot how to create chemistry after percbeth. like japer??? was lacking like any flavor and hazel and leo had more chemistry than frank. like frank and hazel could have been such a good sable couple if they were written better. and the foced interactions with the mini-quests in the books were so awkward. rick should have created so much more interactions with each other or killed them off if he couldn't manage that many characters.
YES 👏 YOU 👏 GET 👏 IT
heroes of olympus honestly seemed so... poorly planned to me? like with pjo, a lot of plot points connected so well together whereas hoo was a mess and i genuinely think the amount of main characters was what rick had a lot of trouble with.
the first two books, the lost hero and the son of neptune were actually pretty good and that's because both books strictly focused on just three characters and three povs each. but then when the seven finally joined, things went downhill 😭
the last book was super disappointing. the seven + gods vs the gigantes went by really quickly and most of the "fighting" was just a paragraph or two of each battle. as for the gaea battle.... yeah 💀 i think it would've been cooler if the demigods (roman and greek) worked alongside the gods to take gaea down since, like it was mentioned many times before, that gaea would've been hard af to beat once she formed 💀
A DETAILED TEAM UP OF THE DEMIGODS FIGHTING ALONGSIDE THEIR GODLY PARENT??? POSEIDON AND PERCY SQUARING UP??? ZEUS AND JASON????? ANNABETH AND ATHENA???? I WOULD'VE LOVED THAT!!! 😩 (i definitely believe athena would be nagging her daughter throughout the whole fight about how she still doesn't approve of her boyfriend and annabeth is just "omg moooom 🙄 focus on the battle!!!)
octavian could've been better written too! it was clear that he was supposed to be the "luke" of the second series with gaea as "kronos", but his death was meh to me unlike with luke who i genuinely felt bad for especially since his reasons made sense. octavian... i didn't feel any sympathy for.
rick's favoritism for piper was also an issue for me too, especially as i grew older and out of my 'not like other girls' phase 😭
pls im just hoping that if hoo gets made into a tv show too, that there's MAJOR changes to it 🙏

Here’s a little snippet that I posted for this AU during Lost Trio Week
-Reyna and Hylla’s mom was killed in combat when Reyna was a baby. This l means they grew up with just their very traumatized dad, which. Went about as well as it did in canon.
-Their dad might also be a senator/former senator in this universe, or some kind of public figure for an important planet, to kind of keep his anxiety about family survival and that being tied to huge responsibilities story making sense
-Reyna joined the imperial academy to get away from her family. Hylla left to explore the galaxy when Reyna was twelve and she hasn’t heard from her since.
-Reyna and Jason might also both specifically be pilots, him to keep his connection to flying and her because of Scipio, but I haven’t fully decided on that yet.
-Reyna isn’t as blind to the Empire’s cruelties as Jason is. She’s not a bad person, but she’s been conditioned from a very young age into believing order is important and comes at a cost, and that losing control of that order means people will die. She was also told her mom died fighting rebels specifically so she’s got. Issues trusting the rebels and getting her to break out of that mindset is harder than it is with Jason. (Also, how exactly would she deal with it if she genuinely let herself question her childhood and figured out all the punishments she endured weren’t justified? She’s simply not going to unpack all that, at least not immediately.)
-I actually don’t want to do the whole CHB/CJ as an empire vs rebels thing because I think that does a disservice to Camp Jupiter. Is it deeply flawed? Yeah? But so is CHB, which just leaves a bunch of traumatized kids to basically raise themselves and then sends them away once they turn eighteen. Jason and Reyna starting off as imperials just makes sense because they both got to camp Jupiter kind of young and have a heavy focus on military themes in canon, but I see CHB and CJ (at least in theory) more as different types of rebels, with CJ being a lot more organized while CHB are scattered groups of rebel cells that help each other as best they can, and eventually they all come together to bring down the Empire.
-With this in mind, the villains from the different pjo books/series are the ones the different rebels face. Gaia is the head of the imperial army in charge of Lothal, so she’s Leo and Piper’s (and later Jason’s) main antagonist for a while.
-Luke was the older kid who took Annabeth under his wing at the imperial academy and eventually helped her get out, hence why she insists he’s a good person even after they learn he’s working with Kronos, who’s also some sort of Grand General or something in this universe.
-Annabeth, Percy and Grover are all with the rebellion. Annabeth is the team strategist, Grover is their navigator and Percy is that group’s personal force sensitive gremlin. Annabeth grew up on a space ship due to her dad being a pilot.
-Nico and Bianca are also force sensitive kids and were part of Project Harvester, except, uh. Their mom did not give them up willingly and was killed trying to protect them. Bianca didn’t survive Inquisitor training, leaving Nico deeply traumatized.
-Will is a rebel field medic.
-Hazel and Frank were never with the Empire in this context, but Frank specifically grew up on a former separatist world and his mom has been giving him combat training since he was fairly young to make sure he can keep himself safe. No idea how I’d retain any of his shape shifting powers, and I don’t wanna make all of these kids force sensitive because that’s overkill and also boring, but he’s an excellent strategist and a very skilled fighter.
-Hazel has force psychometry because that kind of keeps her canon blackouts from her first book while also both being useful in theory and a curse if she can’t control it (if you’ve never heard of psychometry, it’s basically being able to touch an object and see/hear parts of its history, which… super useful and also great way to experience other people’s traumatic moments, including their deaths if you’re unfortunate enough). Frank is really good at coaching her through the worst of it.
-Wait, that wasn’t in this as a concept before, but I love the thought of Chiron being an ancient Jedi Master in hiding. He’s part of a species that lives for a very long time, so he’s seen many of his students die throughout the years, and after the fall of the Jedi order, he disappeared and was presumed dead for many years.
-With this being specifically a Star Wars AU rather than a proper crossover, I don’t think they meet any specific character. Mostly because having characters from completely different fandoms interact is something I struggle with writing for some reason.
So. A Star Wars Lost Trio Crossover AU. Spill.
There’s so much lore to this universe it’s actually ridiculous. There’s actually more but I’ll just ramble a bit for now
I originally came up with it for the lost trio week crossover prompt but didn’t end up finishing that fic because it was way too ambitious and I do not have the commitment for another longer fic right now
Anyway, backstory beats, starting with Leo:
-During the first year of the Clone Wars, Jedi Knight Esperanza Valdez crash lands on Dathomir. She spends a bunch of time trying to fix the Argo, but eventually has a run-in with an injured nightsister and nurses her back to health (because at heart Esperanza truly believes that you should help anyone you can). Nightsister in question takes her back to her clan and Esperanza stays with them and Leo is born during that time (does he have a second mom that’s a space witch in this universe? Possibly). Her and tiny Leo barely escape on the Argo when canon bad stuff happens and after that he grows up on Lothal, which is secure for now because it’s an unimportant world that the newly formed Empire isn’t super interested in. Esperanza has also technically been declared dead years ago, which helps.
-Leo grows up fixing up speeders and ships with his mom. He struggles to use Jedi powers, but he’s got a proficiency for nightsister magick, so Esperanza teaches him everything she picked up on Dathomir.
-Important note here: Leo is specifically a trans guy in this AU. His ancestors take zero issues with him learning magick when they still see him as a girl, but after he comes out they’re refusing to misgender him, meaning he’s technically not allowed to use magick because he’s a guy. Imagine trying to make magic fire with a bunch of annoyed ghosts hissing in your ears the whole time. Leo has a grand time. His relationship with his magick is very complex but Esperanza has always been very supportive of him doing whatever feels right to him. She loves her son so much.
-When Leo is fourteen, his mom disappears. He assumes the Empire found her but he doesn’t know for sure and he’s desperate to get her back.
Quick cut to Piper (speaking of cuts, I’ll put the rest of this under the cut because this post is way too long):
-Piper McLean is born to actor Tristan McLean and an unknown woman a year or two before the end of the Clone Wars. Shortly after her birth, her mother disappears, leaving her father heartbroken.
-Piper grows up all over the place. She’s traveling planet to planet with her dad, who will go wherever his next project calls him, and basically does whatever he can to make sure to keep Piper out of trouble with the Empire.
-When Piper is seven she becomes friends with the son of the lead actress that her dad is filming some sort of awful romcom with. Her and Jason only know each other for this one project and lose sight of each other after that, but because of their parents both being famous there’s a few stupid articles floating around the holonet speculating about these eight year olds having crushes on each other and whatnot
-Piper’s powers gradually appear over the years. This kid is extremely good at force persuasion, but she’s never been trained so mostly does it subconsciously. Tristan started picking up on this and was terrified she’d be taken away from him and the first time she got so upset she started levitating things he decided he had to take her out of the spotlight for her safety and sent her away to various Outer Rim boarding schools to make sure the Empire won’t find her
-Piper does not take this well and deals with it by constantly getting into shenanigans and getting herself kicked out of boarding schools.
-She meets Leo during one of these shenanigans, details unclear.
-She learns about his mom disappearing and has now also seen a bunch of shit regarding how the Empire treats people so she asks her dad if she can please please go back to traveling the galaxy with him she’s totally gonna behave and totally won’t use this as an excuse to spread messages of rebellion or help the new friend she’s brought along find intel on what happened to his mom <3
-So then her and Leo are going around the galaxy causing Problems for the Empire, featuring Leo’s beloved astromech Festus and the space ship he fixed up to try and find his mom, lovingly named the Argo II after his mom’s ship that disappeared along with her.
-Piper also tries to teach Leo force persuasion, with, uh. Mixed results
And, last but not least, Jason:
-He’s born on Coruscant, son of a famous actress and the senator of Coruscant.
-His older sister Thalia has been around since before the Temple fell but either their parents refused to give her away for training since there was no gain in it for them or the Jedi found her too late, looked at this little girl with obvious anger issues and were like “Nope” LOL
-Jason has no force powers aside from premonition that bad stuff is going to happen but he isn’t even sure that’s a power, that might just be anxiety LOL
-He’s seven when his sister disappears. Her powers have always been super obvious so her parents basically volunteered her for Project Harvester (their dad gets brownie points with the Emperor in return for sending Thalia off to get Inquisitor training, they get to brag that their daughter is doing something important, everyone wins (except for Jason and Thalia))
-Jason can never live up to his sister who’s off doing big important things elsewhere that he never got details about. He gets sent off to the Coruscant Imperial Academy where , gets top grades, and grows up thinking the Empire is genuinely trying to help people.
-During his final exams, he sacrifices a win over saving one of his team members (Gwen) who’s gravely injured during the training exercise. His instructors are displeased by this and basically deem him too soft to handle anything important. Reyna doesn’t want him to be punished alone so she says it was a mutual decision (they had shared leadership) and they’re therefore shipped off to unimportant Outer Rim world Lothal.
-Jason doesn’t get that this is a punishment because he thinks all parts of the galaxy are equally important (and he’s honestly just glad to be far, far away from his parents)
-With Lothal being where Leo grew up, this is where Jason eventually meets Leo for the first and Piper for the second time. Shenanigans ensue.

Sneak Peak #2
(sneak peak 1)
BAU Team:
Unit Chief Reyna Avila Ramirez Arellano, the youngest unit chief in the bureau. Strong, supportive leader. Knew Jason when she was younger, but they hadn’t seen each other in years by the time Jason joined the team. When on the job, doesn’t let that history get in the way. Her early life helped shape her aspirations. Speaks Spanish, and always scores perfectly at the range.
Tech Analyst Leo Valdez, the sarcastic computer genius. When he gets bored, he dismantles and rebuilds some of his equipment. His mom died in an intentionally set fire when he was younger, and that motivated him to join the FBI and help catch people like the man who killed his mom. Speaks Spanish and likes to try and make Reyna crack a smile with his dumb jokes.
SSA Annabeth Chase, the resident book genius of team. Between her many hyperfixations growing up, she has a lot of seemingly random facts that tend to come in handy. Her time as a runaway when she was young led her to see and hear things, and to want to help children. Cases with kids always hit her harder than outsiders expect them to. Knows some Greek, and loves architecture.
SSA Hazel Levesque, a kind person who doesn’t let anyone walk over her. She grew up looking after her mom, and riding horses with her best friend. Not big on technology, and quick on her feet. Grew up in New Orleans, and speaks Louisianan French. She’s the best cook of the group, and invites the team over for dinner whenever she can. Inherited money from the father she never met, but donates most to charities.
SSA Jason Grace, a guy who has a lot of questions and not always enough answers. Grew up in a foster home, where he first met Reyna. Lost touch with her after three years of friendship when she moved in with her sister. Doesn’t know much about his family, and on his off hours, tries to piece together his history. Knows some words in Latin from a history project in high school.
SSA Piper McLean, daughter of an actor, who has a lot of connections. She’s never let the fame get to her, but she’s also used to nice things. She likes making a name for herself and her skills, not who she’s related to. Tries to keep her personal and work life separate, but she still gets recognized because of her father. Local law enforcement can underestimate her, but she always proves them wrong. Knows some Cherokee and loves Native American stories and myths.
SSA Frank Zhang, whose mom died when he was younger, and who was raised by his grandmother. Speaks Chinese and French Canadian. Very knowledgeable about animals and weapons, even though he hates having to use excessive force in any form. He, Piper, and Hazel are the best bet to talk an unsub down. He’s not a huge fan of the political part of the job, more focused on helping people.
Other Characters:
Percy Jackson, co-owner of a bakery. Teenage runaway and seen as a “problem child” whose life fell apart when his mom died and he had to live with his step father. Learned to rebuild his life with the help of his friends and wears his scars like armor. Fiercely protective over his chosen family, intense RBF with a heart of gold. Lives above the bakery with Silena, his honorary sister.
Silena Beauregard, co-owner of the bakery. One year older than Percy. Her mom left when she was six, and her father did his best. She has two younger siblings she doesn’t see as much as she wants to. Ran away from home, tired of everyone seeing her as “the poor girl whose mom left.” Her siblings (twins) had each other, and she felt alone. She had memories of their mom. They didn’t.
Thalia Grace, teenage runaway who met up with Luke and Annabeth. Annabeth eventually went home, but Thalia and Luke didn’t. They eventually met Percy and Silena. Thalia was in an accident as a teenager, and has been at the hospital since. She lost her memories of her personal life, but her hospital bills are paid by a prominent NY lawyer known for having affairs.
Will Solace, second generation doctor. More than acquaintance, not quite friend, of Percy and Silena. Thalia’s doctor. Kind hearted. Tries to follow the rules, but will break them if it’s the better choice. His need to help people can override his logical thinking sometimes.
Luke Castellan, child run away. Made his way across country from California to New York. Picked up strays, knowing what it was like and wanting to take them away from the bad. Tries to find a path to make a real difference. Falls apart emotionally after learning his mom died, after Thalia gets hurt. Wishes he could redo some of his past choices.
Nico di Angelo, lives/d with his big sister for most of his life. Their mom was murdered when they were 16 and 18. They’ve stuck together, relying on each other. But tragedy seems to follow them.
Kayla Knowles, medical examiner assisting local law enforcement, and then the BAU, on the case. Close friends with Will.
Rachel Elizabeth Dare, Percy’s best friend from after. After remaking his life. Artist who provided artwork for the bakery, and offers her place up to Silena and Percy when needed. From a rich family, but down to earth. Big on nature.
Grover Underwood, Percy’s best friend from before, when he was a kid and still had his mom. Reconnected with Percy a couple years after Percy ran away. Encouraged him to peruse his dreams. Gets along with Silena and Rachel, lives with his girlfriend juniper nearby and works for a non-profit.

My friend @wool-hat7 never read any of Rick’s books, so I had her guess the personalities of almost all the PJO and HOO characters (I went with all the characters on Rick’s official website)
Percy: “K well percy is kinda hot. Kinda looks like a twink at the same time tho and he probably feeds animals that are stuck outside”
Annabeth: “She seems like she knows her street and mental smarts evenly, she doesn’t know one more than the other. Looks like a possessive girlfriend but also a girl that wouldn’t give a shit if you knocked her bf in the face for being a dumbass”
Grover: “Has the same energy as the guy from the lion the witch and the wardrobe”
Thalia: “If I were gay or bi she’d definitely be my gf just saying”
Nico: “Emo kid that constantly reminds everyone about how dangerous certain possibilities are. They’re also probably addicted to vape by the looks of it”
Tyson: “Very cuddly looking and is probably an introvert and sweet”
Leo: “The one rascal kid who doesn’t mean to cause trouble but they’re just curious. Probably catch them swinging from rope or doing daredevil stunts on accident. He reminds me a lot of a character from the book I’m reading called The German Girl also named Leo. Cause that description is basically Leo in the book I’m reading”
Frank: “They look fun. Definitely doesn’t have a clue what they’re doing. Also they’d hold your hand if you were scared or stressed”
Hazel: “The kid that sits in the back of class and doesn’t talk to anyone and gets their work done instead. Also looks like they’d bash you upside the head if you did something stupid”
Piper: “She looks kinda hot too. Definitely has a Zelda stereotype where she’s high in class but kicks ass too. Definitely seems like the mom friend too”
Jason: “He looks like a dick. The kid that would butt in and say “actually it’s-.” But he looks like he’d be protective of his friends as well”
Clarisse: “Another dickk who kinda reminds me of Mouth from The Goonies. Would definitely be a smartass and wouldn’t be afraid to kill you”
Luke: “Soft older brother who is uncertain about things but goes along with it anyway. Also prop has a crush on the main character’s girlfriend”
Chiron: “The uncle who tries his best to get to know you but is actually kinda creepy sometimes. Probably would offer you a beer and say ‘you’re doin fine. Drink up’. He’d also make you play beer pong with him since no one else will”
Mr. D: “Crack addict uncle who lives in the shitty unfinished basement of his sister’s house and makes his son feel really awkward at parties when he’s there because he tries to flirt with any woman his age he knows he’s not related to”
Zoë: “Disney Pocahontas vibes. Isn’t afraid to knock some sense into your skull”
Will: “Botanist. Also the therapist friend who people actually wonder why he genuinely listens”
Silena: “Popular girl who fixes her lipstick and hair every 10 mins. Would act nice for the first 10 secs but then be a bitch and snotty”
Beckendorf: “Guy that never speaks but responds with just a nod. Kinda good looking, maybe he gets some chicks idk”
Bianca: “Seems like she could live as an Eskimo. Would warn you to save wildlife much like in the way Mike Nesmith would say ‘save the Texas prairie chicken’”
Reyna: “The girl that’s stuck up and ignorant cause she thinks her tactics are correct but in reality it’s the opposite. She’s kinda a Hermione Granger”
Rachel: “Merida. That’s it. Nothing else”
Connor and Travis: “Two faced emo kid. Doesn’t talk about his emotions and plays his guitar on 101 volume” (Note: I’m not sure if my friend is aware that Connor and Travis are two separate people)
Juniper: “Fun elf character you’d find in Zelda games. Except she seems more like she’d be the over talkative friend”
Coach Hedge: “Reminds me of the dad from Luca”
Ethan: “Silent but deadly. Looks like a cinnamon roll, would actually kill you”
Octavian: “Sid from Toy story. That’s all I can think of”
Lityerses: “The kid that works out after and before school everyday thinking that he’s tough as shit. In reality he’s a scaredy cat and not that strong”
Poseidon: “Brother that would take you camping and fishin n stuff. Seems like he’d listen to your problems and try to sympathize with his own”
Hades: “Emo kid who loves his dogs and not people”
Zeus: “Can’t keep his dick in his briefs. Hot headed and bossy. Yknow, Zeus problems”
Hera: “Well it’s Hera so she’s probably a passive aggressive bitch. To Zeus at least.”
Demeter: “1. Rick made her kinda hot wtf. 2. She’s nice but if you cross her she can be a Royal bitch, seeing she turned the nymphs following the procession of Persephone into Sirens”
Athena: “Well it’s Athena, so assuming she’s badass, doesn’t take shit but is secretly caring and motherly over everyone”
Apollo: “I know this is Apollo cause someone did a presentation on Apollo in mythology for English and used this photo so”
Ares: “Right hand man to Zeus. Isn’t afraid to brawl over something idiotic”
Aphrodite: “Well it’s Aphrodite so flirtatious, scandalous, sort of a pick me girl but not really at the same time”
Calypso: “Calypso- I know about since I did a project in her. Sea nymph that lives on the mythical island of Ogygia and is cursed to fall in love with any demigod who lands on her island”
Arachne: “Looks like if they took the kids show I used to love when I was little called Miss Spider’s Sunny Patch Friends and turned it into a horror movie”
Hephaestus: “Well he’s god of blacksmiths so he’s probably a tough guy. Probably has slight anger issues and can be hot headed”
Sally: “Cool mom friend who turned her husband to stone because I already know that about her. She has Pamela Courson vibes”
Paul Blofis: “Typical business dad who doesn’t have much time for his kids”

Rating PJo and HoO character, is might be a little controversial.
Percy: 8/10
Annabeth: 8/10
Grover: 7/10
Luke: 10/10 (my favorite)
Thalia: 10/10 (my 2 favorite)
Rachel: 9/10 (my 3 favorite)
Will: 6/10 for HoO but 8/10 for trial’s of Apollo
Nico: 9/10 for PJo then 8.5/10 for HoO and 9/10 for ToA
Jason: 0/10
Piper:6/10
Leo: 8/10
Frank: 7/10
Hazel: 9/10
Here’s some reasons why,
I love Percy, I really do but I’m more of a fan of the villains.
When I first read the lighting thief I didn’t really like Annabeth. (I know and I’m sorry for my sins) bc she read a lot and just couldn’t relate to that.
Grover was a little annoying to me at first but I understand his character.
Luke is, and was my favorite character when I first started reading the books. His character goes through one of the best storylines in the book. But bc of the Annabeth thing people hate him, I personally think it was a “did you love me? Like a family.” Or something like that
Thalia deserve the best in life. I love her and I will NOT be elaborating (bc I’m lazy)
I love Rachel, her confidence and sense of humor is and painting skills is iconic
Will is just a glow stick
Nico needs therapy and a hug.
Jason is the most annoying person in the world. I hate him with a passion. (I like Octavian more than Jason 😌🤌)
Piper okay I guess, just didn’t vibe with her but I get her vibe.
We Stan Leo but I hated Caleo, so that’s negative points for him.
Frank was the mom of the group that everyone need, not my fav but I like him.
Hazel, is the sweetest thing ever and I wanna hug her. Please her suffering. Girl if you ever need a hug just tell me.

things to remember :)
(trigger warning mostly for things at the end)
charlie one of percys best friends died on a boat in the middle of the ocean while he was there and then had to go back to camp and tell everyone that charlie had died on a boat in the middle of the ocean while he the son of poseidon was there and he probably hates himself for it every single day
percy probably still has moments where he thinks “oh charlie would love this” or “yo this makeup is so cheap it would be a great gift for silena” or “wheres the dam water fountain” etc and then remembers they all died and is put in a sad mood for the rest of the day like when he thought tyson had died—sometimes it takes someone else to remind him that they have died to remember
percy thought tyson died before he could call him brother
percy watched his mother die then thought she was going to stay dead through out basically 3/4 of the first book
percy watched clarisse one of the strongest ppl he knew and looked up to break down crying after watching silena die
percy was abused mentally physically and emotionally for most of his childhood
percy also watched his mother be mentally physically and emotionally abused for most of his childhood (and she was probably sexually abused as well but he didn’t see that)
percy doesn’t know jason died yet and will probably think his death was his fault bc he didn’t go with apollo on his quest
percy blamed/still blames himself for biancas death
percy watched luke k*ll himself
percy probably beats himself up about not staying behind in tartarus to help
percy has been through tartarus
percy probably hates himself for what happened in nicos childhood
percy probably still feels guilty for leaving calypso on her island and for blowing up that valcano
percy was burned alive and i would be extremely suprised if he didn’t have at least one scar to show for it
after meeting reyna and her sister and hearing what happened he probably feels guilty about that too
percy probably heard/listened to reynas pegasus’s last words as they died
percy has ptsd and i mean every type of ptsd- he sometimes still feels the terrible burning sensation from when he was burned in a volcano he still smells beer from when he was younger he gets frozen in things that happened years ago and he still hears bobs last words when things get too quiet
percy 100000% has panic attacks flashbacks and nightmares about these things not just tartarus and they are 100000% worst at night
when percy does have really bad panic attacks/flashbacks he can be stuck in them for hours and if he doesn’t have certain ppl (his mom or annabeth) to help him out of it he can be stuck in them even longer
percy eats a lot bc he grew up with so little that he feels terrible for not eating everything and is always waiting for when he finds out there isn’t any food left
percy 100000% has depression and 100000% has anxiety/social anxiety he’s just learned how to put his needs aside and take care of other ppl first/instead
percy can be put out of commission for weeks when it gets bad and he’s just forced to lay in bed and cry and feel and not feel
percy feels worthless most times it’s not something he grows out of
percy hates public speaking/hates being the center of attention
percy wonders why he’s still alive and thinks it would have been better if he had just died like he was supposed to-why couldn’t he have just followed that one rule and died like he was supposed to-or that maybe to save some trouble for the future he should just end it now
percy wants to have kids but he’s terrified that he will end up like g*be
percy blames himself for what happened to sally while g*be was alive
percy was bullied for 80% of his life and probably doesn’t like/want/thinks he can make any mortal friends other than rachel
90% of these memories and feelings are probably repressed bc that’s how your brain usually handles big trauma like these and that’s why we don’t see him completely melting down like you think he would
percy has terrible memory bc his brain has cut out large chunks of his life bc they are full of trauma and as a side effect to what hera did
percy hates himself
that’s all just thought y’all needed the reminder :)
i might make a pt 2 for more sad things or some happy/cute things bc percy is my comfort character but idk yet when/if i do i’ll like link it idk
on the next episode of: things to remember :)

How Do You Say Gods
Chapter 11: I RUIN A PERFECTLY GOOD BUS
'Is that better, or worse than ruining a useless bus?' Magnus grinned at his friend for the new chapter title.
'I'll leave that to the offender's discretion,' Hearth chuckled.
"Anybody taking bets on how he ruins the bus?" Jason grinned. "My money's on driving it into a building."
"Exploding it," Alex offered, "I needed more details the first time, hopefully this one offers better."
"Maybe he just vomits on one of the seats, they don't all have to be tragic demises," Nico offered with suppressed enthusiasm that was quickly dwindling. He was able to pass off less and less as time went on, he was starting to enjoy this.
"If you guys are done," Percy groaned.
"Oh, we're just getting started," Thalia promised, but continued on by grabbing the book from Percy to read this for herself.
...and twenty golden drachmas.
"I thought you said you don't get an allowance!" Magnus protested this abundance of wealth.
"Special Quest disbursement, and it is a loan, if you can pay it back with extra chores it would be nice," Will shrugged.
... might come in handy for non-mortal transactions-whatever that meant.
"Can you pay monsters to piss off?" Alex looked dubious.
"You can exchange the money for something, but not everything," Thalia chuckled.
... An overdose would burn us up, literally.
Alex still looked very pouty she hadn't gotten to try any of that. What did a girl have to do to instigate an emergency around here?
... both of which sounded pretty bad on reed pipes.
Percy was smiling for his friends gifts from their parents, the simple fact they'd shared such tidbits about that with him while they were hiking up the hill. His mom had never been able to give him many physical gifts thanks to Gabe, usually they just celebrated with cake and a trip out that day to the movies or something special. Now he wasn't even sure if he'd ever get that again...and his dad had certainly never given him anything.
... the tall pine tree that used to be Thalia, daughter of Zeus.
"Hopefully not an ominous foreshadowing of monsters being on your tail the second you leave," Jason muttered.
...a chauffeur's uniform, so I could only see extra peepers on his hands, face and neck.
"Not suspicious looking at all then," Alex nodded.
... drive you into the city, and, er, well, keep an eye on things."
"He says that every time, doesn't he?" Jason stated.
"Yep," Will agreed.
...Luke came running up the hill, carrying a pair of basketball shoes.
"My kind of gift!" Magnus seemed more thrilled than Percy for once, Hearth noticed, as he watched the guy clench his fist and frown at Thalia instead of cheering along.
... The shoes flapped around on the ground until the wings folded up and disappeared.
"That's even cooler!" Percy did his very best to sound as enthusiastic as Magnus just had, but somehow the delivery got lost as his voice cracked. Thalia gave him a grim smile and he hoped he was just imagining it.
... I don't use them much these days," His expression turned sad.
"All the yucking it up," Will muttered bitterly.
"He was a very good actor from what I've seen," Nico quietly agreed.
...A lot of hopes are riding on you. So just, kill some monsters for me, okay?"
"No pressure or anything," Jason agreed.
... "Oh, why do I want to go anywhere with you, Percy?"
"Technically she just wants to leave camp and you're her ride out," Alex chuckled at Percy's sort of put out look for his girlfriend's old flame. He couldn't help the pessimistic thought in that moment if Annabeth would have forgotten about him in however long he'd been missing and moved on.
..."I won't be able to use these, will I?"
"Huh?" Magnus looked as if someone had just tried to take his own shoes away in the dead of winter.
... that would not be wise for you."
"That's ridiculous!" Magnus argued with nobody in here. "That's like saying he should never jump a puddle or ascend a building, a little low-level flying surely can't hurt him!"
"Better safe than sorry man," Percy found that his unease for the idea somehow got worse though. He'd thought the idea of the flying shoes had been that, but now he was just starting to feel paranoid.
"How often do you really jump though, it doesn't seem to be a recurring problem," Alex snickered, and it devolved the two for a moment into making faces at each other while Thalia continued.
I nodded, disappointed, but then I got an idea. "Hey, Grover. You want a magic item?"
"Isn't everything he uses technically a magical item, you know, by being a magical creature," Magnus was grinning at Hearth as he tried to remember all those signs.
He missed a few, but Hearth rolled his eyes and corrected his wrist movement while smiling at his friend.
... the world's first flying goat boy was ready for launch.
"Launching yourself in the air is the coolest thing I've yet heard of," Magnus grumbled one last time. If Percy didn't want those shoes, he'd volunteer.
... flying sideways down the hill like a possessed lawn mower, heading toward the van.
The others all got a nice long laugh out of that, but Percy's vision doubled horribly for a moment, the low lit room suddenly a dark canyon and Grover being dragged into darkness- Thalia cleared her throat harshly before she continued, snapping him back to the here and now. It wasn't just her targets she didn't miss.
..."If only I had more time. Hercules, Jason-they all got more training."
Jason looked baffled for a moment before he realized Thalia wasn't actually referring to him.
... about to sound like a brat... or Annabeth's invisible cap.
"It's not bratty to hope you get treated as equally as others," Alex disagreed. "You've seen them with magic items from their parents, and the only reason Poseidon has claimed you is because he wants something from you now." She wasn't quite shouting by the end, but she sounded extremely verbose.
"Even if your dad did give you something, doesn't make it useful," Thalia agreed with a grimace, she'd never taken to using the winds in combat, the few times she had and her feet left the ground her butt quickly met it instead, so she avoided that 'gift.'
... black ink, removable cap. Probably cost thirty cents.
"The same one as before!" Alex looked as enthusiastic as a pen sword as Magnus just had about flying shoes.
"Unless this is Chiron's odd way of reminding him to write in the next few days," Jason nodded.
"Gee," I said. "Thanks." "Percy, that's a gift from your father.
"Well, that got resolved quickly," Nico tried to say snidely, but he was in fact filing away the fascinating information of how Percy had gotten his sword- before scolding himself about that again!
... the prophecy is clear to me now. You are the one."
Will saw more than heard Nico mutter something about the universe mocking him and wished he understood what he was going through more, it must feel like having the rug pulled out under you to find out so much later you could have been the child of some great prophecy and yet never even be told about it until after all was said and done.
... Chiron had thrown me a pen that turned into a sword. Could this be?
"He is a teacher, he could potentially have more than one magic pen-sword on hand," Alex amended.
"So long as it's not the red one, I'm not a good enough person to grade my own tests," Percy grinned.
...It was the first weapon that actually felt balanced in my hand.
"Congratulations," Jason said sincerely, "but I feel the need to caution, that's not a good thing. It's better to be proficient in more than one style of weapon."
"Oh, Percy's all about adapting," Thalia assured.
"Thanks," Percy told them both, though mostly frowning at Thalia as he tried to figure out if that was worthy of the thanks.
"The sword has a long and tragic history that we need not go into," Chiron told me.
"I disagree," Magnus said, "sounds like a terrible idea to use a blade you don't know the tragic history of."
"I'll write you a novel all its own when I find out," Percy still just looked relieved to have it as he kept the pen in his grasp.
... "Use it only for emergencies," Chiron said,
'Define emergencies?' Hearth scoffed.
'Cutting to the front of the line,' Magnus said without remorse.
'That was one time and Blitz used a plastic knife!' he defended.
... to any creature from the Underworld, provided they don't kill you first.
"Does it stop working if so?" Nico rolled his eyes. "Does it go instantly dull? Shrinks back to a pen and refuse to ever come back out?"
"You're giving that sword way to much sentience man," Magnus chuckled.
"I vote not finding out," Percy shrugged.
...Sure enough, the pen was there.
"That is the coolest magic item!" Magnus cheered.
"And it's just the tip of the iceberg," Thalia grinned as she twisted her bracelet around, but decided against giving them all heart attacks with Aegis for now.
...the lengths to which humans will go to fit things into their version of reality."
"A rose by any other name," Alex laughed. "I've heard it called Glamour ."
"Do our magic items not work on, um, mortals too?" Magnus asked, and wow did that sound weird to say.
"I personally haven't tried recently, but I'll let you know," Alex grinned.
'I can't tell if she's joking,' Hearth signed uneasily.
'It's safer to assume not at this point,' Magnus assured, she didn't even have the book anymore to excuse it and he still hadn't looked away from her in a solid minute.
...(Chiron said cell phones were traceable by monsters;
"Convenient," Percy groused, "my Mom always said technology would kill our brains, I wonder if she knew this too."
"Wouldn't surprise me," Thalia smiled faintly.
... nothing could happen so bad it would mess up everything, right?"
"Optimism," Will laughed.
...All we can do, child, is follow our destiny."
"Wise and sage advice that basically boiled down to I have no idea, have fun with that," Magnus sighed.
... you may be about to prevent the biggest war in human history."
"A spa could use that as their slogan!" Alex scoffed.
"He'll be snoozing the entire trip with that added to his back," Jason sighed.
...Just your typical summer-camp send-off by your typical centaur.
"I do love this world where that is typical," Alex smiled at the idea of being missed for the next place she left. It hadn't happened yet, but Chiron at least didn't seem like a useless place to start.
... I found myself staring ... every billboard and shopping mall.
Magnus had already felt that sense of disconnect from his world down here, it didn't really help they were trapped for an unknown amount of time. He forced his eyes to flicker down, to the bag Alex still had close to her side and wondered how much she'd threaten to kill him if he asked to see what was inside.
Her mismatched eyes caught his, and he lost the ability to speak.
...She gave me an irritated look. "It's bad luck to talk that way, seaweed brain."
Percy beamed as if Annabeth had just decreed she was in love with him. He knew she had a nickname for him!
"Is he okay?" Jason mock whispered, he'd never seen someone so happy to be insulted.
"Just fine," Thalia assured as she rolled her eyes fondly.
... "Look, we're just not supposed to get along, okay? Our parents are rivals."
"And?" Will chuckled at Annabeth's one track mind on this. He was very grateful Apollo had never made notable enemies with any of the gods, he didn't much like the idea of hating someone on such a silly principle.
Nico however fully understood where Annabeth was coming from, the Demeter cabin had always gone out of their way to avoid him at all costs, and they were just the start.
... Poseidon with his girlfriend in Athena's temple, which is hugely disrespectful.
Nico chocked that was all the reference Annabeth gave Medusa! One of the most notable monsters with a power attack of- he shook himself, but then nearly fell out of his seat as Will muttered, "is she in that game you played?"
"Um, yeah." Was he hallucinating? Nobody else in Camp had ever asked him about that.
"Thought so, she any good?" He'd seen that look again, the rise and fall of his excitement and then trying to suppress it again and was thrilled he'd guessed right.
"Very," he agreed with enthusiasm. Will was still watching him, like he was waiting for something else, but he couldn't think what and was very grateful Thalia hadn't stopped reading so he had to pay attention.
... "Now, if she'd invented pizza-that I could understand." "I said, forget it!"
"It's a miracle you two survived each other," Thalia laughed.
"I'm more disappointed she didn't tell us who the inventor of pizza actually is," Alex huffed.
... I ripped it down before Annabeth and Grover could notice.
Thalia gave him a curious look why he was still trying to hide that from them, but he thought the answer was obvious, no need for such a minor distraction as to his real motives going to the underworld, which that poster would inevitably lead into questions about.
... the eye on the back of his hand opening to watch us as he pulled out of the parking lot.
"So it's not his bus," Jason looked a tad disappointed.
"I'm grateful, I don't want to know how many chores I'd have to do to pay for another one," Percy said distantly, his mind not at all on what he'd left behind anymore in that direction.
...Smelly Gabe was probably up there right now, playing poker, not even missing her.
Even Will couldn't come up with a way to bring that into a good light. Even if Gabe did miss her cooking and the free income, those weren't things to be remembered for nor what Percy needed to hear right now. He looked like a lost boy who needed a hug from his mother.
...I stared at him. "Were you reading my mind or something?"
"I'm sure it couldn't have been that hard to work out even without following your thoughts," Magnus assured, that distant, forlorn look in his eyes only an orphan could hold.
"Just your emotions." He shrugged. "Guess I forgot to tell you satyrs can do that.*
"He what?" Magnus was quite proud of himself he only sounded casually surprised rather than flipping out, again.
"They're great counselors to the new kids, and ones that just came back from a quest," Will explained with a fond smile. "Helps them all understand whatever they're feeling is normal if the satyr gets the words right."
"I like that," Jason smiled, though he still wished he understood why Grover gave him the creeps. For no good reason and he felt more awful the less the feeling didn't fade, maybe he could do with a satyr to untangle how confusing all this was.
Magnus silently asked his elf friend if he could do anything like that, and he signed back with very downcast eyes, 'I wish.' It seemed a minor miracle he hadn't started to feel sick yet from the lack of sun making its way down here, but he was sure the feeling of his uselessness with magic resting in him had nothing to do with that.
...I nodded, wondering what else Grover might've forgotten to tell me.
"Part goat, eats tin cans and playing cards, can read your emotions better than any crystal ball reader," Alex ticked off on her fingers. "I'm running out of things this guy can't do."
"Preform magic with his reed pipes," Nico added, causing those who had heard such a travesty to laugh.
"Your mom married Gabe for you," Grover told me.
"No one needs a father figure that badly," Percy grimaced at what on earth Grover could be on about.
...She must've loved you a lot to put up with that guy, if that makes you feel any better."
It didn't, but Percy at least appreciated now he understood why. Guilt warred with practicality, he'd always known he'd been a burden to his mother and maybe if he'd ever run away she'd have finally left him, and yet, according to everyone else, he likely would have died instead of just putting up with some smelly jerk. His mom had tried her best, he couldn't imagine asking anything more from her.
... a lousy child-support check. He'd only claimed me because he needed a job done.
None of them were at all surprised where Percy's mind had landed, his trail of thoughts had not been leading many other paths.
...You will be betrayed by one who calls you a friend, the Oracle whispered in my mind.
'Calls you a friend,' Hearth interpreted with dwindling hope. Not necessarily someone Percy called a friend, it could be a false illusion from the start. Yet the problem stood, nobody they'd yet heard of had a good reason to pretend to befriend Percy either.
You will fail to save what matters most in the end.
Thalia regretted telling him that now, it had been the only words of comfort she had for him at the time but now she watched as Percy began to look queasy with distress and it felt as if there were no right or wrong answers except the one in front of her.
Shut up, I told it.
"Does telling the voices in your head to shut up actually work?" Jason asked a little desperately, he felt like he should be deaf by now as often as he kept asking himself the same questions.
"It helps, but so does keep moving on," Percy sighed with the exact same look of exhaustion, Thalia noticed.
... She could bounce the apple off her knee, her elbow, her shoulder, whatever.
"Now there's an unsung skill," Thalia chuckled. "We should put her in a tournament and get prize money."
... In one mega goat bite, our Hacky Sack disappeared-core, stem, and all.
Alex applauded that skill while Magnus's grey eyes went out of focus trying to picture such a thing, causing the others to laugh all the harder for this.
... but Annabeth and I were too busy cracking up. Finally the bus came.
"Uh-oh," Will said in a sing-song voice.
"Final calls, please place your final predictions now," Jason chuckled.
"Maybe I drive all the passengers nuts and they flee in terror," Percy played along with a mock threatening tone
"That has nothing to do with ruining the actual bus Percy, keep up," Thalia scoffed.
...sniffing the air like he smelled his favorite school cafeteria delicacy-enchiladas.
Jason would swear he had been mentioned doing that, right before those three old unexplained sock ladies had been seen. Grover had never said outright he knew the Minotaur was after them, but he had known something was long before Percy and his mom. Could satyrs smell monsters? How useful were these guys, and why was it making him feel worse the more he learned about them?
... a shapeless orange-knit hat that shadowed her face, and she carried a big paisley purse.
"Are the old ladies back with more socks?" Jason asked in concern.
"I've got a bad feeling you're on the right track," Nico agreed.
... my heart skipped a beat. It was Mrs. Dodds.
"Worse then, definitely worth ruining any kind of bus," Magnus groaned.
'At least there's only one of her?' Hearth tried to offer. Percy had beaten her without any idea what he was doing after all.
... Triplet demon grandmothers.
"That's, a sentence," Will said just a bit faintly. He took it back, hearing the grand epic tales around the campfire was much better than this torture of constantly wondering how Percy was alive!
... it sent a clear message: nobody leaves.
Thalia exhaled slowly before pulling air back in to keep going. It might not have been Hades, but he was really going out of his way to make it seem like he wanted Percy dead right now!
... "She didn't stay dead long," I said, trying to keep my voice from quivering.
Percy was finally glad Grover nor Annabeth were here to call him out on that epic fail.
..."I said if you're lucky," Annabeth said. "You're obviously not."
"I knew she was the smart one," Alex nodded.
... The three worst monsters from the Underworld. No problem. No problem.
"If only she'd said no problem a third time," Percy decided to defuse the situation by mocking Jason. "Then it would have been important, right?"
"Right, exactly," his laugh came across with far less quivering than his had at the time. "So this is a completely unimportant event."
"You keep those happy thoughts man," Will sighed.
..."You're a son of one of the Big Three. Your smell might be overpowering."
"I never thought I'd encourage you taking the Gabe approach, but here we are," Thalia groaned.
...Apparently she didn't see anything. She and her sisters kept going.
"That is one seriously powerful hat," Magnus ogled, he knew at least one thing he'd prioritize asking her when he found her, and that was the story of how she'd gotten this thing!
'Wonder how much it would cost a Red Sox fan to admit that,' Hearth at least tried for a smile, though he knew his friend had no care for sports.
... lashing their whips, hissing: "Where is it? Where?"
'It?' Jason latched onto the odd word at once. Why would she call Percy an it, when they'd called him by his full name before. He opened his mouth to ask what trick Thalia was trying to pull with that, before he saw Magnus and Hearthstone exchange a rapid hand fire conversation and Alex's eyes narrow as well. He hadn't been the only one to notice such an oddity, but sweat was visibly perspiring on Percy's face. He'd left his friends in danger and wasn't to care right now for such a minor detail to him of what exactly these furies were after, because it apparently wasn't him. He'd ditched them for nothing.
... I should've been named ADHD poster child of the year.
"Oh Percy, didn't you know," Will chuckled nervously as he kept firmly in his mind the last time he'd seen them both, very much alive as he tried for some levity. "We held that vote already and-"
"Not the time," Nico hissed at him with a sharper elbow to his side this time. Will folded and let it go.
...Still invisible, I grabbed the wheel from him and jerked it to the left.
"That's, one way to ruin a bus," Magnus said, still looking a little faint he might never get to see his cousin again after that!
... slammed the side of the tunnel, grinding metal, throwing sparks a mile behind us.
'Alex might even still get her explosion,' Hearth was looking paler than usual and vowed to never get in one of these Midgard contraptions again.
...Another great idea:
"You're not allowed to call things great ideas!" Thalia protested. She didn't know whether to kill Annabether or thank her for never giving such details about this mess!
"Another idea," Percy corrected in exasperation, as if he had any control of his thoughts during this mess.
... The door flew open. The bus driver was the first one out,
Alex scoffed at this disgrace, what she wouldn't give for a chance to step in and do something about this rather than hearing of such a catastrophe.
... an accent that was definitely from somewhere farther south than Georgia.
"If she is from Flordia, then we are in trouble," Jason muttered.
..."I liked you better as a math teacher," I told her.
"That is a very hard accomplishment," Will shivered.
"I believe it," Nico sighed.
..."Submit now," she hissed. "And you will not suffer eternal torment."
"Eternal torment," Jason noticed, "until I hear a good offer about no torment, no deal!"
...Annabeth got Mrs. Dodds in a wrestler's hold and yanked her backward
Magnus's mouth was hanging open now and Hearth poked him in concern if he was still breathing. Apparently, you could wrestle a monster!
...I swung Riptide and she broke open like a piñata.
"I'd rather have candy than whatever her spoils are," Thalia sneered.
"Yeah, that knitted hat would clash with your outfit," Alex nodded.
... she didn't have room to flap her bat wings, so she kept falling down.
"Teamwork!" Percy raised his hands in victory, but his smile was short-lived.
... I think it meant "Eat my pants!"
"A worthy insult, so long as they're brown," Will said, he knew his would be if they had to keep hearing about this much longer!
..."Our bags!" Grover realized. "We left our-" BOOOOOM!
"I don't think your bags survived that," Nico told Percy conversationally.
"To bad you couldn't walk away in slow motion," Magnus imagined.
... the bus in flames behind us, and nothing but darkness ahead.
"Okay, so technically, lightning finished ruining the bus," Percy defended. "So, no one wins."
"What a dirty trick, Zeus using the same thing twice," Alex scowled.
"Did you want to go again?" Thalia offered Jason.
"I'll," Nico stopped and cleared his throat but said again with confidence, "I'll go."
"Okay," Thalia smiled and tossed it to him instead and he caught it feeling far more enthusiastic than he probably should. Crap, he hoped Percy wouldn't notice.

*What is with this random bit of satyr trivia that is never used again? It's like a pre-empathy link or something, which I have some stuff to say about in the next book, but I honestly wish this moment had just been left as Grover understanding his friend in that moment.
