🌿 How to draw simple grass for a game
Thank you kind asker I will make a tutorial below for grass. I'll do shrubs and trees in another one, because it's a different method and it got pretty long.
🌿 How to draw grass tiles: step-by-step
Each box is 16x16, the same size Stardew Valley uses. Make it tile (how to do it depends on your software) so we can see if our edges match up nicely.
Draw 1 simple blade of grass. Many options for shape but I like this one. Feel free to copy me directly
2. Give it a shadow. Wow !!!
3. Give it a highlight! OMG!
4. Add another grass
5. Do it over and over and over and over and over
Literally just do the same or similar blades of grass, give them all little shadows, highlight a few if you want and there you have it! So easy.
It looks really complicated like this, but its literally just a few steps, repeated over and over.
Many games use this technique and it would be perfectly serviceable for a base grass tile.
Personally, I prefer lower contrast grass. This tile will likely be used for large areas, so ideally you don't want it to be too busy or eye-burning to distract from the character.
🌿 I'll show you how to do a different type of grass now that is a little more complicated.
Midtone grass colour
2. Add some lighter and darker patches touching each other (not too high contrast!)
3. Use this shape (or your preferred, but this is how I did it) on the top edge of your patches. Colour them with the middle colour from each patch.
4. Do it again a lot (this is very tedious)
5. Add some highlights
6. Add some fun extra stuff
We're done! Have fun everyone, show me if you try it!

was going through my files and found this mini process thing I made for someone about my general grass painting process
posting it here to show everyone so it may possibly be helpful
*the round brush used is pretty much the default basic round brush you'd find in every art program
edit: whoops forgot to put this in original post, here's a note I made about drawing the grass tufts
#my art#original#background art#grass#art tutorial#art process#btw don’t take the grass tuft thing as like a hard rule#you def can space it out if you want if it looks better for your style

I made a video guide on restringing my jointed hands for my customers. BJD dolls, as well as jointed hands, should be restrung every now and then to keep the proper elastic tension. Mine should be strung in a not-so-traditional way, so you can restring your pair of Whispering Grass jointed hands on your own. The video is almost half an hour long, please see it on my Youtube

Month 5, day 30
Refined the wind animation a little bit! The trees still don't move as much as I want them to (there IS some movement in there, I swear!) but the grass and flowers are looking real nice :)
So! I've moved on! To trying to figure out Cinta's magic! Which means crashing multiple other tutorial into each other and hoping something works out lol

I love how you draw backgrounds and cat designs
Do you have any tips?
ok second part, backgrounds. this is going to like... be long and i'll put it all under a readmore but as a heads up - i'm really sorry that my tutorial is just this image:

ok so as a heads up - you should not make backgrounds like I do. I love backgrounds, they are my favorite thing to draw in the world and I want to get to drawing them RIGHT AWAY so I spend very little time on setting up a proper foundation. For this example, I'm using a page from chapter two that hasn't been posted yet.
Here's my initial sketch.
And that's the final page. If I were to hand this off to literally anyone I don't think they would be able to work off my thumbnail visually at all. But I'll try to walk you through my progress as I work off my very bad sketch foundation.
I put down a base color and then I usually do the line art sep. from it. The lion statue is on it's own layer so I can move it around. Yes, I usually layer top plant stuff on the lineart layer to create depth when I paint the plants underneath it. You should not do this.
Then I focus primarily on the mid ground and foreground and I included a little diagram of how I broke up that up in the drawing. For me, a good background is like an onion, it contains layers. Your background is composed of 3 to 4 "layers" - a background where my details and colors are less focused and more loose. The mid-ground is where you can start painting in your details, and it usually hosts the focal point, that's what draws the eye and then the foreground - that's closest to the viewer. I usually paint the foreground first, and then work backwards, but I also know a few people who do the opposite - working back to front because working back from front is how you do it when you traditionally paint.
Once you sort of understand the layers, you can start to play with how you frame your focal point. Below is sort of a wip background for a job I'm doing.
The foreground is now being used to block the mid ground, the bg is used to help sort of cup the focal point and mid-ground.
This is our final image (without a blue gradient slapped on top bc that;'s just how i shade. I just slap gradients on these bad boys.) I added another small layer just to focus on plant details and when I planned the lineart, I had left that huge open space bc I wanted a panel to represent Dewbelly's expression. UHM. I HOPE. THAT ALL MAKES SENSE.
#author notes#letters to pawstbox#not updates#GOD I HOPE THIS HELPED.#if you want like a plant or grass tutorial or smth i can try and help#good lord i did all that talking but did i really say anything?? who can sya

Hlavco presents:
How To Grass
"It's as tedious as you want it to be!"
Basically, you want to hide the flat lines at the bottom of each section to make the transition vague. The more overlap there is between each grass color, the better it tends to look.
You may want to split the grass between different work layers if you're considering adding characters or objects after the fact, because this stuff is a real pain to mess with once it's down.
While the random darks and lights of the grass look fine, you should also consider where the environmental light is when planning them out. See this drawing for example, there are more dark areas near the trees.
Bonus:
Quick'n'Dirty Treelines
"It gets the job done."

everyone was so harsh to alola it deserved so much better. like this region is so well designed and so pretty and the story is actually really fun? will never forgive everyone for what we did to her
#I started a sun nuzlocke and granted I’ve only just finished the melemele grand trial#and idk! I’m having a great time!#when I played it the first time I didn’t love it but I was also doing pretty bad at the time and had started being less into pokemon#there are reasons I understand being frustrated like the constant stop start of tutorials and cutscenes but also like?#maybe it’s that i know they’re coming and have accepted it but can’t you just like enjoy the ride? it’s a way more involved story I guess#like you get to talk to lillie and hau a bunch and see what they’re up to! feels more like actually going on a journey w your friends yknow#compared to idk sinnoh where you run into Barry occasionally or even bw where there are 3 parallel journeys which intersect#also think when I first played it I didn’t like the removal of megas. z moves as a concept. and the removal of national dex#and yeah all those things suck a little bit maybe I’m just more used to it now after galar+paldea#idk! but man alola itself is so cool it’s just so good#I rlly love the environments and the island setup and god alolan pokemon are so fun#the one thing I DO have beef abt is the relative paucity of grass types but it’s not even that bad. that’s a me thing bc i like grass types#(it would be unfair to judge alola on ice types especially given they’re kinda the best about it to that point bc of tapu village)#anyway I’m rambling but alola!!! alola my beloved I’m so sorry#this is my first time properly playing since it came out bc I didn’t wanna restart ultra/sun for the longest time#my original sun had all my ancient pokemon from the bank launch free trial. rip to my original black + x teams. and also the 2020 mythicals#ultra sun is my last original save file pre-switch so i am very reluctant to restart that. maybe one day. until then! sun <3#luke.txt

Vera and Zephyr, my oc duo of 'somewhat siblings' move around from town to town a lot. I like the bright overcast whiteblue of the sky of late fall.
#my art#my ocs#i kinda like the look of cell shading on top of complex backgrounds.. it's fresh looking#i followed a 'draw your own anime screenshot' tutorial for parts of this#perspective feels a little wonk#it never snows where my ocs live unless they go up into the mountains though i think in winter even their grass would be less green#maybe zeph would have to invest in long pants and a jacket haha he'd hate the cold.

Happy first of October! 🎃 Here's the process video from last week's painting: controlling the texture was definitely the biggest challenge here - had to use a lot of selections to keep it from becoming a mess 😵💫 Thanks again to Vaughn Meadows for the inspiration! 💖
