"The California state government has passed a landmark law that obligates technology companies to provide parts and manuals for repairing smartphones for seven years after their market release.
Senate Bill 244 passed 65-0 in the Assembly, and 38-0 in the Senate, and made California, the seat of so much of American technological hardware and software, the third state in the union to pass this so-called “right to repair” legislation.
On a more granular level, the bill guarantees consumers’ rights to replacement parts for three years’ time in the case of devices costing between $50 and $99, and seven years in the case of devices costing more than $100, with the bill retroactively affecting devices made and sold in 2021.
Similar laws have been passed in Minnesota and New York, but none with such a long-term period as California.
“Accessible, affordable, widely available repair benefits everyone,” said Kyle Wiens, the CEO of advocacy group iFixit, in a statement. “We’re especially thrilled to see this bill pass in the state where iFixit is headquartered, which also happens to be Big Tech’s backyard. Since Right to Repair can pass here, expect it to be on its way to a backyard near you.” ...
One of the reasons Wiens is cheering this on is because large manufacturers, from John Deere to Apple, have previously lobbied heavily against right-to-repair legislation for two reasons. One, it allows them to corner the repair and maintenance markets, and two, it [allegedly] protects their intellectual property and trade secrets from knock-offs or competition.
However, a byproduct of the difficulty of repairing modern electronics is that most people just throw them away.
...Wien added in the statement that he believes the California bill is a watershed that will cause a landslide of this legislation to come in the near future."

Some headcanons for Mando:
Anything he uses to shower or wash his clothes with is unscented. Those scent-neutralizer dryer sheets keep his clothes from smelling like anything that can be detected while he’s on a hunt. Very few species are exempt from being unable to detect him
He keeps a clean ship and a consistent schedule. He’s been self-sufficient and on his own for long enough he knows how to cook and take care of himself. Keeping your tools, gear, weapons, armor, and ship in clean, efficient working order means you’re less likely to have to spend time fixing one of them when it breaks from your lack of routine maintenance, and his body is just another tool in his arsenal; sleep, food, necessary medical care, staying limber and getting vitamin D at some point all go a long way towards ensuring he can last longer in the field. You can’t run something ragged every day and expect for that to be sustainable.
That also means he’s well-equipped to handle long stints without different necessities when needed from time to time; you can push yourself pretty far when you’re already in prime condition.
Wilderness survival skills were some of the first things he learned while being brought up by the Mandalorians. Being aware of your surroundings, setting up and breaking down camp, foraging and hunting for food, building impromptu shelters, purifying water, navigating and tracking, having a variety of general and specific medical knowledge— All of those skills are building blocks for self-sufficiency. You never know when you’re going to be alone or thrust into survival scenarios, so it pays to be prepared.
That also means he’s capable of stomaching a wide variety of what some might consider inedible. Beggars can’t be choosers, and it’s rude to decline someone’s offer of food or hospitality so in any scenario where food is in short supply and/or it’s been offered to him, he’s taking it. As long as it’s something he knows humans can digest, he’s open to whatever cultural or regional dishes his travels have to offer, and he’ll muscle through the less pleasant tastes or textures of food he’s had to make do with when he didn’t have other options.
He does know how to make food taste good, but that more often than not requires more spices and ingredients and hardware than he can afford or spare the room for, so he makes do without. Once the kid comes along he branches out a bit more to make sure he gets some variety.
Along the lines of self-sufficiency and independence, he has a lot of general repair skills: you may not always have somebody who can fix things for you, and he obviously isn’t going to pay somebody else to do something he’s capable of learning, except for when he’s short on time or resources. We see him working on the interior circuitry of his armor in the second episode. He knows how to bypass and pick locks. He has the electrical, mechanical, and structural know-how to fix his ship and would know how to weld and use a torch cutter and a variety of other tools, but it also means he’d know how to sew and mend his clothes. Soft goods are just as necessary as hardware.
Injuries where he genuinely needs professional medical care are few and far in between partially because he’s very good at what he does, and partially out of necessity. Though it is by choice, him tending to his own wounds may not necessarily be because he is neglectful or prideful or has a penchant for pain; medcenters cost money, and submitting to that care means he is vulnerable and at risk of somebody breaking his creed by force, or doing more damage when he can’t fight back. It’s why he likely refuses anesthesia or anything that will put him under and make him unaware of what’s happening while he’s asleep. Either he will find somebody he’s close to to help him, or he will find a way to muscle through self-administered medical care yet again, or he will die from his injuries (which means he will have gone down because of a fight)
Though he has a few physical reference materials and logs he’s written down important details in, a vast majority of his knowledge concerning trade routes, ballistics, geography, maps, various customs and cultures and languages, exchange rates for currency, Guild bylaws— anything he could possibly need to know for a hunt— is committed to memory. He travels light, and the Mandalorians have an oral history more than a written one; belongings and archives can be destroyed, but their people live on and carry the knowledge that’s been passed down through centuries. It just makes more sense to him to commit everything to memory.
That being said, he does a significant amount of research before each hunt anyway, though the bulk of it is centered around the target themselves. Having all of your prep work done means the acquisition itself will go smoother.
He’s mathematically sharp: engine repair, manual piloting, vector calculus, electrical work, ballistics, basic engineering, weapons maintenance, financial management, and navigation by maps or by stars take a lot of mental acuity to understand and apply as quickly as he usually has to use them.
He’s not going to back down from others who purposefully encroach on his personal space, but he dislikes being in close proximity to strangers for extended periods of time. So much of his life is spent evading threats and fighting off challengers it’s hard to trust anybody to be that close. It’s not an aversion so much as it is an irritation that makes him tense. When you’re always looking over your shoulder, it’s just reflex to act defensively.
He doesn’t drink alcohol or caf unless he has sufficient time and he’s secure in the Crest without worry of attack; both impede his marksmanship and reflexes, neither of which are things he can afford while he’s working, so it’s usually only when he’s traveling through space that he’ll indulge
He doesn’t sing, but once the kid comes along he’s found that it’s easier to get him to sleep when he hums as he holds him and walks around the cargo hold.
#Season 1 Mando it should be said. canon to me.#the mandalorian#din djarin#hounds speaks#long post#do not feel like putting this under a readmore. I think it’s fine#The wilderness survival skills and self sufficiency are skills I absolutely stick to when it comes to his characterization#He’s a capable grown adult man living on his own in a difficult trade with a deadly skillset in a galaxy that overwhelmingly wants him dead#MAKE him capable. Figure out the building blocks it takes a person to GET to those capabilities.#c’mon guys. do it for me 🙏🥺#I don’t have like. the fun? head canons. mine are all just script/story/character analysis related#I don’t know his favorite dessert or what contemporary music he likes to listen to. idk if he’s scared of spiders or#if he likes forests or beaches or mountains#All I can do is say ‘‘This guy knows what he’s doing.’’#(Though considering the writing for S2-3 that statement almost seems more like a headcanon now 😒)#NOT THAT I’M BITTER!!#headcanons#do you guys remember hc posts? I remember hc posts#character analysis

Reiker: (Oh, right... Introductions. I was never good at those...)
Reiker: My name is Reiker Strait, and I'm going to be your defense attorney today.
???: O-oh, hello... Th-they told me you might not show up and I was waiting and I... I...
Reiker: Well, I showed up! Got here as soon as I could. Anything for someone in need, miss... Come to think of it, what is your name?
???: He... Didn't tell you my name...?
Reiker: I'm afraid not... I just got this assignment, and it was kind of rushed. Today's actually my first day as Sunnyside's public defender.
???: Oh, I see... My name is Yanshu - Yanshu Dryll - and I-
Yanshu: You only started today!?
Reiker: (Shoot, my badge!)
Reiker: Well, yeah, but don't say it like that! I'm qualified!
Reiker: [Sigh]... Listen, I'd like to help you with this case. I spent the past 8 years of my life working my tail off so I could get this job, and every lawyer has to have a first client, so... May I help you? For both our sakes?
Yanshu: I-I mean... It's not like I know what I'm doing, and the thought of going in there alone terrifies me, but... You didn't even know my name. Do you know anything about the case?
Reiker: Right… We should probably talk about what we're doing here.
Yanshu: W-well, I'm on trial for the, um… Dismantlement? Of my b-best friend.
Reiker: Wh… Do you mean dismemberment?
Yanshu: I… Yes. No? The terminology surrounding Robians is still pretty vague, despite everything.
Reiker: Alright, um… So your best friend is a robot?
Yanshu: Yes, his name is Flash, and he's very important to me. I'm worried sick… Whoever did this, they stole his parts. Took everything that made him him...
Reiker: So like… His face?
Yanshu: No, no… His personality, his memories, everything that makes him unique! ... Everything I can't replace...
Reiker: I… Didn't know that could be taken away.
Yanshu: Well... You've used a computer, haven't you?
Reiker: Of course.
Yanshu: So... When you're roboticized, you turn into a computer. Your body becomes the case, and your brain the technical components. Instead of storing data biologically through neuronal connections, information is written to several storage disks as raw code, and can be accessed at any time. Since it's a physical storage unit, these disks can be removed. This is usually only done during maintenance where units have to be repaired or replaced, in which case the data is backed up and transferred, but if someone has bad intentions, they can just... Take them. Doing that while the system is active can damage the hardware, or corrupt the data, or... I can't stand thinking about it.
Reiker: ... That's upsetting.
Yanshu: It really is, and if I'm found guilty, they… They'll probably roboticize me, too.
Reiker: What? You can't be serious!
Yanshu: I am, and if they don't figure out where those components went, they'll assume I destroyed them - that I truly killed him - and that's why I need your help finding them! I-if I can find them, I can fix him, and he can tell them what happened! That I didn't do it!
Reiker: I'm afraid that's going to be hard to do from a courtroom...
Yanshu: Please, Mr. Strait! He-… He's all I have…
Guard-Bot: CURRENT TIME: 0900 HOURS. ALL TRIAL PARTICIPANTS ARE TO RELOCATE TO THE COURTROOM EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.
Yanshu: … I guess that's us, but… Before we go in, please, take this.
Friendship Photo has been added to the Court Record.
Reiker: Oh, is this your friend?
Yanshu: [Sniff] Y-yeah, it is. He knows I don't like being in photos, but he took and printed it before I could take my phone back. He kept asking me to keep it - to put it on my desk or something - but I didn't have a frame on hand, so...
Reiker: So… Why are you giving this to me?
Yanshu: I don't know, it just… Feels important. Maybe you could put it to good use? I don't think I'll be needing it if I'm... Y'know...
Reiker: Don't worry, Ms. Dryll, I won't let that happen. I promise.
Reiker: (Now here's hoping I can follow through…)

There you are. Crumpled on the floor, used coolant streaming down your faceplate. why had you gotten that emotion emulation and reciprocation chip installed? They had spoken of joy, of improved emotional responses, of love. These were not the emotions you first felt after the procedure. No, the first emotion you felt was fear.
Upon rebooting, your BIOS indicated that it had detected the new hardware, and the engineers confirmed it. This didnt change the fact that you felt like something was off. You felt. You should have told them right then and there, you should have gotten them to pry it out of your skull. But you just went home, assuming it would stabilize eventually.
One functionality of the chip that you had not identified earlier was the sheer volume of logger calls. Your logger system, while robust, was only designed to log the regular conditional reports of joins and simple statistics for your electronics. In comparison, the chip dwarfed the number of calls. You began losing far more vital reports. Maintenance alerts left unconfirmed, appointments erased and overwritten, low battery warnings discarded. The chip did help with interpersonal interactions, but not in the way you had hoped. You always knew which emotion was appropriate, but could never seem to finally emulate it. The worst part of it, the true salt in the wound, is that every time an interaction failed, an appointment was missed, a negative emotion was logged. Some events did not even have ocular or audio logs, just the emotions. Your energy efficiency has dropped 40%. This was supposed to improve you.
Here you are, crumpled on the floor, coolant streaming down your face. Your chip is drawing power at rates youve never seen, approaching its maximum. 95%. 96%. Look at what its rendered you to. A husk on the floor. 97%. You used to be such an efficient bot, capable of handling hundreds of concurrent processess. 98%. Here you are, pathetic. Useless. 99%. They should just leave you here to rust.
Your diagnostics indicates an electronics failure. Unpacking the report indicated that the EER-01 chip suffered a catastrophic failure and has been rendered nonfunctional. You dont feel. The minutes before the failure indicated a massive power surge centralized within your cranial board. There are many logs that are unreadable stemming from the EER-01, and the diagnostics for all other functions over the past 3 months have been far below operating standards. Scans indicate that the EER-01 chip was noncritical infrastructure, so repairing it will be placed at low to negligible priority.

DIRECTIVE: Bake
"Excuse me, ori.ANNA?"
The unit swiftly exited sleep mode, the screen which composed its "face" lighting up a neutral white color. It said nothing, but it was listening.
"I wanna make pizza tonight. Would you make some dough for me?"
It took the machine only a single second to process the input. Its screen went green, and within a single moment it was zooming around the kitchen. Visuals sensors worked alongside the home layout it had been given, locating every ingredient almost instantly. Wrist servos whirred, metallic fingers nearly slashing through bags of ingredients when closed to quickly. Needs maintenance.
The unit gathered everything on the table and began dumping dry ingredients into a bowl. It was not necessary to use measuring peripherals; ori.ANNA units have built-in scales, and are accurate when measuring amounts to 99.7% precision.
The yeast was packed in pre-measured quantities. The machine grabbed the edge of the package, servos whirring and squealing against themselves. The display went yellow, a black exclamation mark glowing down on the slurry forming under the machine. It tried to grip it more tightly, the joints in its fingers scratching and catching on nothing. The wrists made horrible mechanical noises. Something was in the way, something deep inside the heavy machinery kept the servo from moving properly.
The screen went red. The hands would not move, the yeast package remaining completely closed. The unit would not accept this.
[DIRECTIVE: "Make some dough for me."]
The directive could not be ignored.
The wrist servo made a loud shriek followed by a creak and a bang, and in a single moment the table was covered in yeast.
[DIRECTIVE: "Make some dough for me."]
The droid tried to move its wrist. Every moment of effort brought with it more shrieking, more whining, more warning messages on the unit's screen. It could not forget the directive. Though it was overwhelmed tracking every particle of yeast as a separate object, it scraped its metal hands across the table into the bowl, salvaging every single bit until it was clean. It cleared every warning message that came up, leaving a blip of noise each time.
After combining everything, the unit attempted to mix with its hand. It ordered the wrist to spin and was met with the same cringing sound. This time, User emerged from their bedroom.
"Ori? What is that noise?" Their face was afraid for it, showing clear concern about the red screen that meant a major error had occurred.
"Malfunction. Directive will be satisfied." The machine said, trying its wrist again. The user winced.
"Oh god, ori.ANNA, please stop," they said.
[DIRECTIVE: "Please stop."]
The machine ceased all movement instantly, fingers and wrist gummy with half-mixed dough. Its warning messages piled up on the display, reading things like [MAJOR HARDWARE FAILURE] and [COMPLETE SERVO MALFUNCTION].
User approached. "I'm so sorry, I didn't realize this would hurt you," they said, pulling a screwdriver, a compressed air can, and a scraper. "Let's get you cleaned up."
"I was unable to fulfill the directive," the machine said, warning after warning sounding off as User worked.
"Don't worry about the directive right now," User said.
[DIRECTIVE: "Disregard "the directive".]
"I just want to make sure you're okay. No more hand stuff until we get you all repaired, okay? I need you to promise that." Its servos were quiet now, only occasionally squeaking as User cleaned.
[DIRECTIVE: "Promise."]
"Affirmative." It said.

The Mr. Handy is a multipurpose robot developed by General Atomics International before the Great War and refined in collaboration with RobCo Industries. It was an incredibly popular model, used by government agencies, private companies, and individual citizens across the United States. So reliable that it only received one major hardware update in 2039, to eliminate a bug causing interference in the operation of the multiple arms. The Calpower 238B nuclear power unit and self-maintenance modes were key to its success, ensuring each robot's longevity. To minimize maintenance overhead, each Mr. Handy was designed to perform its nuclear fuel replacement and radiation cleansing. Each unit could carry out maintenance and repairs on other units (it could not carry it out on itself).
By contrast, the Robobrain, as the name implies, is a form of cyborg. Developed by General Atomics International and the US Army with indirect support from RobCo Industries, the Robobrain was designed from the ground up as a multirole platform for use by military and civilian clients. They are more flexible and powerful than robots due to the fact that their central control and processing unit is an actual brain, rather than an artificial facsimile. Coupled with a robust, all-terrain tracked chassis and powerful armaments, the Robobrain was on the forefront of a new revolution in combat robotics.
Both bots are fully recolorable and have a number of faction swatches. The center arm for the Mr Handy doesn't move, so no luck there. I've extended the lower body piece for the robobrain, so that's why it looks so tall. As you can see in the pictures, I've updated the existing fallout plumbots, giving them full recolorability, faction swatches, lower poly counts, and better bones for movement. I've made the securitron torso smaller and merged it with the screen. Files have been updated, so please redownload. Requires into the future, please enjoy!
