Intellectually, I know that correcting people online isn't a worthwhile use of my time. Autistically,

Brazilian Miku is the kinda gal to write an in-depth 30 page long exquisitely formatted academic research paper about why Senna was the best to ever do it every time the "Who's the GOAT of F1?" question comes up The consequences of not agreeing with her methodology and conclusions are dire

I'm not saying that hypocrisy is never worth talking about, but whenever I see someone enter into some hot discourse with accusations of hypocrisy or double standards, I never take them seriously. Because essentially, this is the behavior of someone who doesn't actually have a real argument for their own position. They're just trying to get their opponents on the defensive and silence them with shame.

Actually, that's a thing I've been really annoyed in general about lately. No one sees nuance anymore. No one understands that people have different opinions that are totally valid, and they scorn people who disagree as bad, crazy, or stupid. It's a pathetic way to look at the world.
I see "dude" and "guys" as gender neutral and they don't? I must be a self misogynistic idiot who doesn't care about trans rights.
I see a classic piece of art like Duschamp's urinal or "Wuthering Heights" as dumb and unenjoyable? That must be because I'm uneducated and shallow. Nevermind that it's shallow to insist all classics must be flawless wonders, that "Wuthering Heights" and "Great Gatsby" are lengthy essays about misery, the hatred between rich and poor, adultery and death with no positive resolution, or that I can acknowledge that something can impact other people deeply whilst I still hate it.
I think the best way to deal with the Omelas Kid is to try and improve society from the inside and eventually improve the kid's conditions rather than give up and walk away? I must be a selfish, greedy person who cares about no one and wants the kid to suffer. Nevermind that walking away doesn't help the kid either, you're just being a coward and pretending the problem will solve itself, and nevermind that in the real world there's nowhere to run to that isn't a flawed human society already. We should be helping support each other and you argue about humanity not being worth it.
You might interpret something totally differently and have a different emotional impact. That doesn't make people who differ bad or stupid. I mean, I see the craziest takes on here. Someone told me before that little kids can't make art because art requires a college education and I was a psychopath for believing art is an expression of self that anyone could do.
Which, by the way, is why the Duschamp thing is art, I know it's art, I just hate it. Hate is one of the emotions Duschamp wanted to get from people. He made it to be a shock piece.
People say the only way to interpret media is counting every single little thing as a symbol, allegory, or metaphor. I get told that if something doesn't have that, it's a useless descriptor. Okay, so Tolkien describing the beauty of a place is useless then? Heidi describing the peace of the mountains is useless to you. Science fiction novels describing how their machinery works is useless to you. It might be the author describing them for the pure joy of it, but if it doesn't have a defining metaphor to it, you think it's worthless. Just because you interpret things differently doesn't mean I'm wrong for enjoying beauty.
You see Robert Frost's poem about coming home on a long day and think "miles to go before I sleep" is a metaphor, and I know he was just tired and wanted to go home. You see Picasso's Guernica and think it's an abstract expression of terror and human violence, I know it's a literal depiction of the Guernica genocide.
Stop making your opinion the superior Right one and saying whoever disagrees is Evil and Stupid. It's a narrow minded, shallow way to go through life. You need to appreciate the nuance, the kaleidoscope of different views of the world! You aren't the center of it and your thoughts aren't the only ones that matter.

You know literacy is dead when you preemptively address a point and the responses are people making that point you anticipated

There is a trend where people accuse others of media illiteracy are media illiterate themselves.

Sometimes you see people having a fight on the internet and one says “is this really the hill you want to die on” but like…they are the ones who have dug in four posts deep to defend this random-ass little hill.
It’s too small to get artillery up and too screened with trees to station snipers on and you are both here. There is no backup, no other parties to your quarrel, no orders or duty to keep you here. You are both white-knuckling your bayonets and preparing to die locked in an eternal grapple on this little limestone knob of a hill. Is he dying more than you, or you dying for more than him? My good creature, you are both dying every moment and you are both of you on that hill.

Happy STS! Is there an aspect of your WIP that you think will start internet arguments if it gets published? 🍿
I love this ask, thank you! If I get unlucky, then I'll have a lot of shipping wars, even though I'm doing polyamory for a reason lol. Oh gosh, but I think if I get lucky and enough people take my work seriously, I think my fictional ladies will be extremely controversial. My men are objectively as controversial, but I think my women will inevitably have more people vocally mad about them.
Lucienne is bisexual, bitchy, and loves sex -- which is already a combo that could get me #cancelled lol -- BUT ALSO she's afraid of intimacy because she was taught that all her worth is IN perceptions. And so, she is ONLY mask. When the mask breaks, she feels like there is nothing. This could definitely be construed and demonized as NPD. I think some people will see her as "the mean girl/bully" and I think others might see her as "Amaiguri excuses her toxicity because she's hot and traumatized" but I hope some people will see her for what she is: A complicated person who is DOING HER BEST and sometimes, that isn't very good.
Nesa SEEMS a little healthier because she knows how to parrot mental health advice and hypothetically understands conflict navigation. She uses all these powers to gain trust and then BAMPF! Betrayal. Well, specifically, she uses this for interrogationy purposes. Is this her job? Yes. But she also doesn't really feel bad about it.
Saravanya is a mess and some people will hate her just because she hates herself. Woof.
And, of course, Arlasaire.
Ah, my controversial little protagonist! I already foresee people accusing me of doing her disability wrong, despite my best efforts. I think some people won't understand how her trauma works so they'll assume I'm endorsing all the above controversial people because Arlasaire does -- but Arlasaire fawns as her trauma response. I also think some people will think she's over the top or overreacting to things because she's unemotionally regulated in a way that isn't sexy or palatable. I think people might see her faint East Asian-coding and say I'm playing into East Asian stereotypes. I think on the other hand, some people will say that she's terrible East Asian representation cuz she doesn't look or act "Asian enough". (Of course, I'm desperately trying to ensure none of my countries have a good one-to-one comparison to real life cultures and I'm not really trying to "represent" anything other than a diverse but realistic fantasy world.)
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to fret! Now I'm gonna go back to my emotionally challenging hole and pretend the public isn't perceiving me in it 🕳🛌🏻

Not your usual subject, but I had a Facebook (what else...) argument about this. It's about breastfeeding your baby in public. The guy said "we've climbed down from the tree, you should do that in private" and someone else said "we did climb down, so you should control yourself accordingly".
Unfortunately it's a world where it's for the safety of a women to cover herself, but in a theoretical world, where there comes no harm to women:

whenever i really want to start a fight on the internet that will lead to nothing useful, this song plays in my head and, most of the time, that's enough to talk me out of it
genuinely one of the more concrete impacts a piece of art has ever had on me

at this point, whenever i'm talking to someone online and it gets to the point where they're just getting unreasonable and insulting, my new tactic to disengage before it blows up into a full-blown argument is to say "anyway check out my music and my joyfriend's music" like this https://odiohi.me/pages/discography https://izuku.bandcamp.com
