#I enjoyed this process So MUCH #And what a process it was. In one wip Solas looked a little bit too beat up... to balance the line of disheveled and on the brink of death #Is a delicate line #And painting these floating stones was such a joy! Good practice too as I don't often draw spacious and atmospheric scenes #I should do it more often. I was inspired by the concept art of Dai and datv. The amount of stories you can tell with the colors! LOVE #I tried a new technique for painting the skin and it was challenging. I layered transparent colors over a black and white shadow sketch.#A technique usually kept for oilpainting but it translated surprisingly well in digital media #And side note. Aren't these the wettest eyes of Thedas? #poorly drawn mdzs #mdzs #mianmian #nie mingjue #jin guangyao #JGY is nothing but outwardly calm and carrying on his duties as the chair for the meeting #but in that small pause after Nie Mingjue commemorates Mianmian for leaving...you can feel the tension.#Because Nie Mingjue comes from a place of privilege. He's always been in a position where his legitimacy and political standing-#-were never challenged. He didn't have to fight for respect. He was born into this world respected.#For people like Mianmian and JGY who clawed their way up from the bottom...this is a huge deal.#Truth be told I have a lot of things to say about what it means and feels to be in a position where leaving is messy.#There are times where the situation is bad but to leave means that those years of your life will have been for nothing.#That all the other suffering incurred will be fruitless. So you just *keep going*. Because it *has* to be worth it.#Because going back to what you were before is even more terrifying than the hell you are boiling in.#My concrete example for this is post-grad academia.#Because that cohort will have spent over a decade pursuing a goal and leaving means...well...it means throwing away those years.#It means losing (likely nearly all) your connections. It means going into debt you'll never pay off.#It means putting up with some pretty heinous abuse from your supervisor because what are you suppose to do? Leave?#Leaving is for those with the privilege to have options.#And even if you do have options...#Ultimately we would rather love the pain we know than risk the unknown. Hoping it's worth it one day.#With that mindset established; never say JGY should have just left like Mianmian. He couldn't. This was what he dedicated his life to.#He never had the option. Even if it seemed like he did - no he did not. He never conceived this ending ever happening for himself.

2025's ides of march illustration!

I've been doing one a year since the 2022 presidential election*, so. you know! keeping up with the thematic tradition. sometimes politicians compare themselves to caesar crossing the rubicon and you just gotta. process that. do an annual re read of a bunch of different literature that use the ides as their stage. go through commentary on dante's divine comedy. watch a production of julius caesar. for unrelated reasons, ofc.

(*other countries besides america have elections)

it's also funny how people will debate whether or not the optimates/conspirators/whatever were ungrateful assholes in my inbox whenever I post one of these, like the ides of march hasn't been a well established narrative that people have been using to explore other stuff for centuries. take it to an academic conference! we have empire and autocracy and absolutely batshit press conferences to discuss!!

Laois from Dungeon Meshi legit feels like someone said the generic blond main character guy in a fantasy story can never actually be an interesting character in his own right and Ryoko Kui went, “Oh, bet?”

#dungeon meshi #delicious in dungeon #laios touden #I first saw him and thought oh no generic blond Everyman #this is usually the most boring character #and wow Laois is anything BUT boring like I started watching for Senshi #but by the end Laois is one of the most fascinating characters #which is a major feat for a character who has to be the hero and carry the plot to pull off #just speaking as a writer often your hero is stuck Doing the Plot so doesn’t get as many interesting quirks #but Laois just shows that making even the hero be weird as hell and want something is always a winning formula #imo the creator of the story saw it as a challenge to make him actually interesting and SUCCEEDED

This is so shanks coded to me. Like he just keeps losing people and he never learns how to deal with it. So much so that he becomes the abandoning parent. He literally knows nothing else all he has as a frame of reference is all the adult figures in his life leaving him and telling him it is for the best. So why exactly wouldn’t he believe that the best way to love someone is by letting go?

He does it to Luffy, he does it to Uta and in some ways he does it to Buggy and Mihawk too. Because he never just asks them to stay. He lets Buggy run out of his life even though it was pretty obvious that Buggy wanted Shanks to fight for this to take a stand a real one on a conviction for once and he…doesn’t, he just lets buggy leave.

And then he hitches his wagon to the most flighty (dude is literally a bird motif 😭) mother fucker he can find. he lets Mihawk wander in and out of his life as he pleases regardless of what is best for either of them. Because maybe Mihawk has nothing better to do 👀. Maybe he would say yes now if Shanks asks. but Shanks would rather die than ask, would cut off his other arm before he even attempted to “clip Mihawk’s wings”

And that’s like the truth of it. Shanks has been abandoned by every person that has ever loved him besides his crew and he knows they will never leave him. But Maybe he just wants someone to stay not because they call him captain.

#shanks is the quintessential abandoned child syndrome #that grows into the leave them before they can leave you adult #except he does it in a nice way and because he does genuinely think he is helping them make the best decisions for their lives #which as shown with uta and Luffy is a pretty big hit or a disastrous miss #you can pry shanks and his abandonment issues out of my cold dead hands #honestly this is kind of #shuggy #because I do think Buggy wanted shanks to put up more of a fight to keep them together #the same way he wanted him to go after the one piece #buggy and shanks arrested development at 15 #mishanks #shanks and his abandonment issues entering a bar and choosing to attach himself to the one person most likely to just up and leave at dawn #is so funny to me #because truly that is such a daddy issues move 😭#but honestly maybe I do think Mihawk would have agreeded (petulantly maybe) if Shanks had just asked #Hell he’s in cross guild and all crocodile had to do was make a phone call #but they also have the divorce that Mihawk’s not completely over which complicates things #god I need to see the interact in canon 😭#shanks unable to form a stable relationship with someone he didn’t adopt into his crew challenge impossible #buggy the clown #shanks #red haired pirates #red haired shanks #red hair shanks #akagami no shanks #mihawk and shanks #buggy x shanks #uta one piece #monkey d. luffy #one piece

Turns out, Sir Pentious is the only one who actually knows where Alastor lives. Not even Vox does. And Sir Pentious just...never questioned it. He didn't even realize he was the only privy to this knowledge, he just does shit without explanation (that's what Alastor likes about him :3)

Everyone else kinda assumed Alastor just lived under a bridge or a bog before he lived at the hotel. He just popped up one day and never left.
