Happy Fanart Friday and here’s my original portrait featuring Disney’s beloved version of J.M. Barrie’s famous sneaky pirate: Captain Hook! 🪝🏴‍☠️⚓️

I’ve been working on this since April but I had certain days to work on this portrait. As always, this piece is all mixed-media. I used matte paint, ink, and colored pencils. I drew Hook semi-realistically, kinda Pixar-like. ☺️👌 You get what I’m saying? Also I drew Captain Hook wearing his modern clothes from the new game “Disney Villains: Cursed Café” and I really love his outfit because he looks like theater teacher! 🧑‍🏫 🎭 Coincidentally, in the game, he is interested in creating an original theatrical play. Which is very fitting because I see it’s a nod to his Etonian days.

Oh, yes, according to J.M. Barrie, Hook went to Eton College which is why this devilishly dashing buccaneer is so academically smart! 👈😘

Not only I added the Etonian crest on his sweater, I also added the golden infinity brooch which is a symbol used to represent the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Warmly, that means that his current English voice actor, Corey Burton, is Autistic. Me, being diagnosed with Mild Autism, I totally respect and support one of my favorite voice artists from childhood greatly! And in my headcanon, James Bartholomew Hook is Autistic because I see it as a sweet tribute to Mr. Burton. 💛💛💛 Also this original artwork of mine is for every Hook fan including @not-wholly-unheroic!

Hook’s real name is James Morris Barrett. (Yes, the initials being the same as Barrie’s is intentional.) I know Disney has started using “James Bartholomew” since the Jake series started but this was my headcanon before that was really a thing and honestly I sort of consider Jake-verse it’s own separate thing.

Beyond the initials as a nod to Barrie, the name has other significance as well. James means “supplanter” and is a variant of Jacob which comes from the biblical Jacob who was technically the younger of two brothers but ended up basically stealing his brother’s firstborn status. Morris means “dark-skinned” or “Moorish.” And Barrett may either mean “trader/merchant” or “war-like/quarrelsome.” So as a whole, his name is basically “Dark Quarrelsome Replacement Son.”

“My” version of Hook is actually Peter’s (younger!) half-brother…though neither of them knows that for a long time. He is the boy asleep in the bed that Peter sees through the window who he believes has taken his place. In reality, baby James is the (biracial) result of one of his merchant father’s conquests while abroad who he brings back home with him after his biological mother passes away. It’s sort of an open secret that he is illegitimate but his new mother, still grieving Peter, takes to him right away despite him not being hers by blood. She doesn’t blame the child for his father’s mistakes and is just happy to have another little boy to love after Peter disappeared.

When he grows up, James drops the last name “Barrett,” refusing to have any association with his abusive father and goes instead by “James Morris” until eventually going by “Hook.”

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Bart pokes Kon in the chest, right in the center of his boob window. “Why would you puree Sonic? He’s my friend, and—hold on.” He examines his finger incredulously. “Is this… make-up? Did you put make-up on your tits?”

“Uh, yeah.” Kon raises an eyebrow, Spock-style. “You think I’m gonna be James Tiberius Kirk, Captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise, ‘Amok Time’ tiddy window edition, for Halloween, and I’m not putting glittery highlighter all over my tits? Please. Give me some credit.”

“Highlighting the tits is a classic move,” Cassie agrees. She’s got her lumberjack flannel unbuttoned quite low, and if she thinks she’s been slick about sending flirty selfies to Cissie, she’s got another think coming. “Time-honored and true. I did it, too.”

“Seriously?” Bart wrinkles his nose. “That’s wild.”

“You literally have a full face of Sonic the Hedgehog make-up on,” Tim points out.

“Yeah, but that’s my face. That’s where make-up is supposed to go.”

“C’mon, Bartholomew,” Cassie teases. “Think outside the box.” Her phone dings again, and she pulls it out of her bra to text Cissie back, a bright smile on her face. “Oh! Cissie wants a group pic of all of us. She’s right, I can’t believe I forgot to get one! Get in here, boys.”

Obediently, the three of them crowd into frame with her, squishing into each other’s space. Kon twists around with his plastic phaser in hand, winking at the camera in a classic boobs-‘n’-butt pose; Cassie rests her elbow on his shoulder and leans into him with a grin. Bart, with his spiked and spray-dyed blue hair, hooks his chin over Cassie’s shoulder and makes a show of grabbing for her axe; Tim, in his objectively hilarious sexy sheet ghost getup (a bedsheet with eyeholes that ends at his hips, paired with insanely high stiletto heels and fishnets) looms into frame next to Kon.

“Wait, wait, we can’t see your legs, Tim,” Cassie objects. “That’s the whole joke of it. Um… let’s see, how to angle this…”

“Hold still,” Kon suggests, shifting a little to free his other arm. “Rob, lean on me and—”

Tim, picking up what he’s putting down immediately, lets Kon support him with a hand at the small of his back, grins under his bedsheet—Kon can see the smile in his eyes—and kicks one leg up across Kon and Cassie. Bart helpfully grabs his ankle.

(And daaamn, do Tim’s legs look good in that getup. Hoo boy.)

“Oh, perfect.” Cassie beams. “Okay, three, two, one!”

She clicks a couple of rapid selfies against the haunted house wall behind them. They’re quite the motley crew—Sonic in a onesie, a lumberjack, Jim Kirk, and a sexy ghost—and the photos look ridiculous and whimsical, even in the dim scene lighting.

“Send me those, will you?” Kon asks as they all relax again. Tim lingers, leaning into Kon’s hand for a moment, and Kon smiles. “I gotta show Ma.”

By now I think most people have guessed their inspirations, so I'm happy to talk more about them and explain a bit for each one! I'll go one by one and share a little fun fact!

Yev Quispe is based on Yzma from the Emperor's New Groove! A fun fact is that Yev's signature spell is called “Creature Feature”, which allows him to temporarily turn someone into an animal of his choosing, though it's limited to one person at a time and larger animals require him to use more energy than a smaller one. His uncle is the botany professor at NRC!

Timothy O'Hare, mostly goes by Timmy, is based both on the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland and Thumper from Bambi! He has 9 younger sisters and 3 older sisters, and would regularly get beat up by them if he was rude to a girl. His signature spell is “Reverse the Clock” which allows him to turn time back by a few seconds, 10 at most, however he has to wait at least 30 minutes between each use due to the massive amount of blot he accumulates from use.

James Bartholomew is based on Captain Hook, though he has no hook (yet). He was raised at sea for most of his life among much older and crass sailors, so he has a hard time talking with others. His signature spell is “Hook, Line, and Sinker” which allows him to cast a barrier that “hooks” his opponent to his vicinity, up to a 5-foot radius; if they attempt to leave they will be dragged back like a fish on a hook. The farther they try to get away, the heavier their body will get.

Wynfred Salson is based on Winifred Sanderson from Hocus Pocus, but likes to go by Winnie. He's the eldest of the triplets and is extremely protective of them. He likes foraging and making his own potions from scratch, so he joined the Mountain Lovers Club to collect his own materials. He is very socially unaware and thinks he is the epitome of the ideal human, though most people are put off by him.

Marion Salson is based on Mary Sanderson from Hocus Pocus and is the shyest of the triplets. He's Winnie's shadow and idolizes his brother, and even tried switching clubs but was denied. He has a very acute sense of smell on par with beastmen, so he hates how perfumed Pomefiore is, as he'll get migraines from the smell. Marion would like to become a healer, like his mother, and volunteers in the infirmary as much as possible.

Silas Salson is based on Sarah Sanderson, though they like to go by Sy. Sy likes to dress up in both masculine and feminine clothes and sometimes will ask everyone to refer to them as he, she, or they, depending on how they feel day to day. They also like to eat bugs and will snatch a flying cockroach from the air and shove into their mouth to eat. They say it's because they like how the texture feels in their mouth. Sy is also an excellent singer and would like to study bardic magic.

Aspen Albamar is based on Morgana from the second Little Mermaid, though his name references her green skin. He tries to be composed, but it's quite easy to push his buttons and get him riled up, unintentional or not. He is a wonderful musician, but actually has trouble with magic, as he was a late bloomer. He's originally from the Arctics and moved to the Coral Sea very young,

Tony Lombardi is based on Undertow from the second Little Mermaid, and is extremely small for his type of merfolk, which is a tiger shark. He, unlike the rest of his mer peers, is really into flight class and surprisingly excels in it. It might come as little surprise, but Tony has a big ol' fat crush on Aspen and has since they were children, but has kept it on the down low. Despite his warnings that Jade most likely views him as a little brother, Tony will begrudgingly help Aspen in pursing him since it makes him happy.

Yaqub Fahim is based on Iago from Aladdin and is a parrot beastman. Yaqub is arguably the most level-headed of all the Ramshackle freshmen, and gets along with most if not all of his peers. He does not like Kalim and Jamil at all, as both are off-putting to him for different reasons, so he is not particularly attached to Scarabia as his dorm, so he prefers to stay in Ramshackle as long as possible.

Amara Goethel, also known as Nurse Goethel, is based on Mother Gothel from Tangled. She is in charge of the infirmary, but also teaches the health and wellness curriculum, which has classes that correspond with both science and health, so she works with Vargas and Crewel often. She has a very hot wife who is covered in tattoos and

I wanted to establish a cast of side characters to make up for the lack of the third years, so I decided that new freshman would be the best choice! A lot of their background and 'lore' won't be relevant in the main story, but I would like to write more about them in little side snippets!

Some of them will end up together or with an unnamed background character. Two technically have partners already, but one of them doesn't really count. Anyways this was fun thanks for asking about them, though I think I shared more than asked lol.

SOOOOO, potentially a new hc backstory to Hook based on chats with a friend and more research cause HISTORY~

Posting under the cut first just to make sure it makes sense and to get peoples thoughts (those who know the OG story I went for)

Raised in a noble, rich household, James Francis Bartholomew Jackson was set to inherit his father’s business as a London Merchant, who owned three merchant vessels and a grand wealth and home. In reality, James senior, his father, was not really his father. James was bore from his mother’s love to a lowly footman in their home and despite keeping it secret, the truth was known after James’s mother passed away at age 4 and to keep the scandal secret, his father sent James’s real father to his death.

No one else knew. Any confession his wife had written was thrown in the fire, his anger towards his wife and her lover extended to young James and yet without this boy, his wealth would dwindle to nothing and his legacy for nought and by now he could not rid himself of the bastard child. Especially he had built himself up to be the boy’s father. 

James would never remember his mother well and he would never know the truth about his real father until much later in his life. He never saw his real father. 

In 1664 a young 12 year old James went to sea, working as an apprentice to the quartermaster on board an East India Trading Company vessel. He sailed with the promise and a contract to the ship, to return home in no more than a years time to take on more of his duties as a heir to his father’s fortune and business (as well as to confirm his betrothal to a gentry girl.) 

However, he never returned to England. 

After sailing on the merchant ship for a year, James was called to enlist into the navy as part of the second anglo-dutch war, he took part in a battle against Dutch ships and saw many deaths and sinking from the mere age of 14 as an apprentice officer. 

As the Plague of London erupted, followed by the Great Fire of London, he was taken out of the navy along with many others as a means for the government to save money and soon rejoined another merchant ship. 

Hook sailed on a total of 5 different merchant ships for a grand total of 13 years after leaving the navy. The truth of his birthright came about through a letter. The letter stated that Hook was not set to inherit his father’s title, business or money, he was bankrupt and cast aside after the death of his father who confessed before death that James was not his son and he kept it secret to avoid the scandal.

The blow of the news was only overshadowed by the Officers and Captain on the ship he served who took it as a ‘kindness’ to not throw him overboard and stripped him of all rank, titles and honours. Treating him with evil distain for the rest of his voyage.

Until the year 1703, where at the age of 27, James took part in the mutiny of the ship and became a pirate Captain.

For 10 years, James was known as both ‘Mutiny Red’ and ‘Scarlet Jim’ (Jas to his friends) and sailed across the world plundering, stealing and ransacking other ships, getting away with it at times for being hired as Privateers, escaping or disguising themselves. 

Then, one day, himself and his crew were struck by an horrendous and strange storm. When Hook awoke, he was amongst the wreckage of his ship in a new world, where the sky, the sea and the people were so different and magical…. The Never Realm.

Rescued and taken in by a man named Mr Smee, James and the members of his surviving crew rebuilt the ship and discovered the island ‘Neverland’ where he came across an orphan boy who didn’t seem to age…

The rest is history.

The Hook Family Names (AU)

Captain Hook is born James Bartholomew Orion Jones. His last name is really Jones not Hook however after he loses his hand he embraces the name Hook. His children continue to use the name Hook even after they come to Auradon. James is the name of his maternal grandfather while Bartholomew is the name of his paternal grandfather. Orion is the hunter constellation foreshadowing his hunting of Peter Pan.

Harriet is born Harriet Vela Bellatrix Hook. Harriet was the name of Hook's mother who dies long before Harriet was born. In connection to the second star, I like to think hook really loved stars and constellations which he learnt from his paternal grandmother. Vela from the Argo Avis constellation (considered the pirate constellation) which was divided into Carina (the keel), Puppis (the poop deck or stern) and Vela (the sails). Bellatrix is for the 3rd brightest star in the sky which is also considered the warrior star.

Harry is born Harrison Sirius Canopus James Hook. Harrison to honour hooks mother again. Sirius is the brightest star in the sky and in my mind Hook's father's name. Canopus is the second brightest star in the sky. James obviously is for Hook's first name.

CJ is born Calista Jane Carina Hook. Calista was Hook's paternal grandmother's name. Jane was for himself once more as Jane is often considered the female version of James. Carina is for the constellation Carina (The Keels)

Hazel is born Calliope Cassiopeia Puppis Polaris Hook. Hazel is a nickname that stuck. Calliope comes from the Greek Muse Calliope. Cassiopeia comes from the lady of the chair constellation. Puppis is unfortunate but he wanted to complete the pirate constellation. Hazel likes to forget its apart of her name. Polaris comes from the star in the ursa minor constellation. Pirates has to calculate their position they had to recognise celestial bodies like the sun, moon and particular stars including Polaris, Rigel and Procyon which is here Polaris comes from.

Captain Hook has nicknames for his kids related to their celestial| Greek names. Harriet (My warrior), Harry (My brightest Star), CJ (My beauty, in Greek Mythology Calista or Calisto was a huntress loved by Zeus and turned into ursa major) and Hazel (My Muse or my North Star)

Cada uma daquelas crianças sob seu poder e vontade, restringidas a uma liberdade que eles achavam ter conquistado pelo seu relapso. O sorriso de Hook diminuía pela risada involuntária, a quebra do personagem construído sem querer. E de pensar... A memória dos anos passados, dos fracassos... Da quase morte com o crocodilo, de ser feito de trouxa, de perder quase tudo, da quase morte pelo crocodilo de novo. A mandíbula fechou, os olhos brilhando com raiva. Dessa vez não tinha...

Vou interromper a narração exclusiva desse Capitão para resumir, certo? Rapaz, esse pirata ganhou na loteria da sorte e reverteu a história para um conto de fadas próprio. A cereja do bolo foi o glamour, magia que transforma o gancho numa mão tão funcional que ele acaba esquecendo ser de mentira. Gancho é pai de navio, amante e defensor de álcool em todas as horas e aficionado em calçados e cintos de pele de crocodilo.

Captain Hook

Captain James Bartholomew "Hook" is the main antagonist of J.M. Barrie's 1904 play, Peter Pan. He abandoned the high seas just to get revenge on Peter Pan for feeding the crocodile his severed hand, which gave him his pirate name of an iron 'Hook'.

Hook is a symbol of the decline of British power during Queen Elizabeth's time, and he also represents manliness. His appearance is based on King Charles II and different mentions of historical Captain Cooks.
