Non-verbal ≠ non-speaking
The idea was simple, change the perspective by ending the usage of “non-verbal” and move to “non-speaking” by that taking away the stigma that those who’re said to be non-verbal experience. Simple, no problem on the horizon… right? Non-verbal/nonverbal is a term used for people who communicate through means other than words, which is a concept especially common on the autism spectrum. For years,…

Badeshi: Only three people speak this 'extinct' language
By Zafar Syed, February 2018

Would you like to learn a few words of a language only three people in the world speak?
Badeshi used to be spoken widely in a remote snow-clad valley, deep in the mountains of northern Pakistan.
But it is now considered extinct.
Ethnologue, which lists all of the world's languages, says it has had no known speakers for three or more generations.
But in the Bishigram Valley, we found three old men who can still speak in Badeshi (you can hear them in the video at the link).
"A generation ago, Badeshi was spoken in the entire village", says Rahim Gul. He doesn't know how old he is, but looks over 70.
"But then we brought women from other villages [for marriage] who spoke Torwali language. Their children spoke in their mother tongue, so our language started dying out."
Torwali is the dominant language in the area, which is itself under pressure from Pashto, but has pushed Badeshi to the brink in this valley.
"Now our children and their children speak Torwali," said Said Gul, Rahim Gul's first cousin. "So who should we speak our own language with?"

Said Gul also doesn't know his own age. When he said he was 40, somebody corrected him. "It's more like 80!" Said Gul quickly shot back, "No, may be 50, but not 80!"
There are no job opportunities in the area, so these men have spent a lot of time in touristy Swat District, where they have picked up the Pashto language, and that is mainly how they communicate.
Because of a lack of opportunities to use Badeshi, over the decades even these three men have started forgetting the language.
While they were talking in Badeshi, Rahim Gul and Said Gul regularly forgot a word or two, and could only remember after prodding from the others.
Rahim Gul has a son, who has five children of his own, but all of them speak Torwali.
"My mother was a Torwali speaker, so my parents didn't speak any Badeshi in the house. I didn't get a chance to pick it up in childhood. I know a few words, but don't know the language. All my children speak Torwali.
"I do regret it, but now that I'm 32 there is no chance I can learn Badeshi. I'm very sad at the prospect that this language will die out with my father."

Sagar Zaman is a linguist affiliated with the Forum for Language Initiative, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to the promotion and preservation of endangered languages of Pakistan.
"I travelled to this valley three times, but the inhabitants were reluctant to speak this language in front of me," he says.
"Other linguists and I were able to collect a hundred or so words which suggested that this language belongs to Indo-Aryan sub family of languages."
Zaman Sagar says Torwali and Pashto speakers look down upon Badeshi, so there is a stigma attached to speaking it.
Perhaps it's too late to save Badeshi, but at the very least, you can learn a few words to keep the memory of the language alive:
Meen naao Rahim Gul thi - My name is Rahim Gul
Meen Badeshi jibe aasa - I speak Badeshi
Theen haal khale thi? - How do you do?
May grot khekti - I have eaten
Ishu kaale heem kam ikthi - There is not much snowfall this year

The many terms of pop psych and how they are all flawed
Narcissistic abuse, coined by an Isreali to get lessened prison sentence. Claiming he had narcissism and was self hating and claimed those with npd do not exist as real people, only reflections. Having no true self. And unable to heal. And believes those with npd in relationships always view the other person as a mother (none of this is backed by science).
And promoted retraumatizing npd people and anyone else with ptsd for "therapy"
"Psychopath": has always only been a legal term. The 2 factor model was found to have various problems including many wildly different disorders to the point of irrelavance and only used to give worse prison sentences all while trying to stop any research on it because kept finding problems. (And its been shown people can actually be encouraged to do bad things because not aspd)
"Porn addiction" when ted bundy was arrested, he claimed he just looked at more and more severe porn and that led him to do those actions. As a defense for lower sentence. He was vanilla and follow up studies found no correlation. However christian groups used this to try to take down porn. Porn addiction was found to be unrelated to how sexist, how often look at porn, how much, how extreme. Just how self hating you are.
Maslows hierarchy. Found to be wrong across different cultures, people, time in life, situation. And was created by someone that believed psychology should never include mentally ill in studies and was anti vaccines cause he was a eugenicists that believed they would save lives.
Love languages. Baptist minister with no psychology knowledge that created it to try to convince his wife to sleep with him more.
Mbti. Created by authors with no psychology knowledge who were bigoted but inspired by a work from a psychologist who specifically stated it went nowhere and couldn't be used for psychology.
Brainwashing. This was created during the cold war for reasons why people would become a communist or join a weird religion or be an atheist. No evidence backing but the belief in it existing used as an excuse to torture and abuse people to get them "out" of that state. Which caused long term harm.
Stockhom syndrome: created during the worry of brainwashing being at it's height. A continuation for reasons why wouldn't they trust the police. Even though it was found out to fit only 8% of the time.
Stanford prison experiment or the belief that authority means no control on actions by people under it and authority makes you do terrible actions. Done shortly before the start of the cold war. And helped give excuse for reasons same with brain washing.
Even just 4 years after its start it was criticized for usage of demand characteristics (people assuming what an expirement is testing so acting out specific behaviors to fit with their thoughts of what the results should be) cause...no concrete "prisoner behavior". And that the participants were acting out roles rather then any actual influence of authority or controlled by authority. Just participants acting out stereotypes they believed researchers wanted. While also suffering selection bias.
Most of the "guards" in the experiment even directly stated later that they were intentionally acting.
There is probably a lot im missing(if you want to add other terms, feel free). But the point stands. Pop psych uses psychology like things to seem legitimate, but for their own harmful agendas.

i started this process of comparing the two exams i have in clm thinking the harder one for me would be the archaeology and not the cultural heritage one despite not having any background on heritage and having studied 4 years of archaeology in university and actively participating in two archaeological campaigns doing fieldwork. well. you are never gonna believe this
#yeah the archaeology mock exam was easier to me who would've thought#i have this stigma with me that i am terrible at archaeology#because in my uni degree we had to choose between archaeology history and ancient languages#and i chose history and i had low grades in archaeology and languages so since then i assume i'm bad at them#as if i do not read so many articles in archeology for research. have been in archaeology sites excavating.#have archaeological sources as my main ones in any research i make#as well as epigraphical records which i read in the original languages and make my own translations of#but no my brain says i'm incapable of being a latin / ancient greek tutor because i'm bad at it#or work as an archaeologist cause i don't have experience so

'It makes sense if you think about it. After whatever happened last year.'
Leo stared blankly into the last frame of the youtube video on his screen, leaning his chair back to balance on two legs. The corner of the library he'd tucked himself into for research was quiet enough, with even the cats rarely poking their heads by to check on him. Technically he wasn't looking into anything restricted that he'd need to hide for, but he didn't want the noise to potentially be a distraction.
'The weird thing is that there clearly aren't many ghosts around here.'
He drops the chair back down and looks through the Clash memorials. It's a lot of people. Mostly human. He tabs back over to the recent memorials made for victims of the anomalous inpatient. For a while after that there were quite a few ghosts around the campus and the ruined hospital. Leo could sometimes hear the airy, echoey whispers of their voices when he passed by. One or two were strong enough to be seen. In the days following it got quieter and quieter until the only sounds were the living. He remembered seeing students from a few different houses going to the area now and then. Kusanagi, too.
One of those students was a friend of one of the Vagastrom students--he remembered him bringing them over, convinced something was haunting the area.
Ex-Clementia then.
Darkwick was just laying damn near any ghost on campus to rest without letting them stick around and resolve their business? Even if they aren't dangerous? Kind of scummy, but probably just a precautionary measure. Spirits were a little unpredictable.
'A video would be a bad idea then. Too much publicity.' He's only cruel for no reason when it's funny. There's not really any humor in double-shotting a guy who doesn't deserve it. 'But it'd still be interesting to know what's going on there. I'd just have to find a covert way to ask. . .they might be monitoring our messages too much for me to go through YouTube.'
In person would have to do. At some point. Just another thing on his eternal to-do list! Leo stretched and groaned, listening to the pop of muscle and crack of bone and every other reaction his body gave to the movement.
If Taro Kirisaki(Zenji Kotodama, rather, using his name would probably attract too much attention) was a ghost that meant ghouls' souls were probably still intact enough to leave spirits behind, even if they weren't very strong spirits. More importantly if his ghost was still hanging out after this long it meant whatever demon he'd made a pact with hadn't come for him. That or something kept demons from coming to Darkwick, which was unlikely considering how little was really known about demons. If pact-makers did, at some point, unconsciously(?) consume their demons after making their pacts then the demons' souls probably didn't integrate with their own. Either they were neutralized(erased? Laid to rest?) or they were housed within the body and released on death. And there were no records of unknown S-class anomalies or demons appearing after the death of Taro Kirisaki. He died at Darkwick General, there would have to be a report somewhere if something like that happened. That or it was kept majorly under wraps.
And of course no one wanted to talk about The Clash so asking would be difficult right now. He needed a better rapport with the third and second years to get them to talk. But even Romeo didn't want to talk about it too much, and Leo was one of the only people Romeo trusted right now!
Leo exhaled sharply through his nose.
Why is it that everything kind of interesting was always just out of reach? It was like being edged on entertainment and knowledge. That was only fun when there was a good payoff.
Maybe Zenji would prove to be a good payoff in the end. He probably wouldn't know anything--or he wouldn't tell him anything--but maybe he would at least be entertaining.
#life in darkwick: leo#((i remember hearing a phrase or something probably translated from another language))#((which described someone with sensitive hearing as 'able to hear ghosts'))#((and i like that idea for leo that he can hear ghosts with his stigma even if they're weak))#((so whenever he's around 'the anomalous biwa' he's like. there's a ghost there.))#((and earlier zenji mentioned his youtube channel so i decided 'he can kind of recognize zenji's voice from recordings and he heard the biwa#((and made a connection. and decided to add it to his research pile))#((to give me an excuse to harass ghosts in the future lol))#((ghosts may not necessarily sound like they're speaking without him using his stigma it sounds like echos and wind or other little noises))#((but if he uses his stigma it just turns into normal words.))#((i considered that leo can use his stigma to understand towa more clearly too because it seems like hyde nicolas and haru understand him))#((so maybe it's an exposure thing kind of like when someone has a major speech impediment. you can figure out what they're saying the longer#((you hear them speak. and leo's stigma lets him hear things more clearly so he understands towa a bit with it. i considered that))#((but i've mostly scrapped it lol))#((anyway. have a random leo status update type of deal))

i just wanted to know the definition of dog whistling and...
[ID: google search result that answers the question "What does it mean when a narcissist says dog whistling?". The following text says, "Have you heard of "dog whistling?". It's when a toxic partner sets you up in public to make you look hysterical by triggering you with a word or an issue that you both know is related to you. It seemingly is innocent and unrelated to anything, but you know that it's really actually a dig to you". It's dated from September 30th , 2022, and it's actually a TikTok. /End ID]
stuff like this makes me want to abolish tiktok /half serious

#ive seen this in a lot of fics and#its not great#people with stis/stds are not dirty#and using language that implies as such is geniunely harmful and contributes to social stigma surrounding it#most people dont even realize how common they are#statistically speaking#over half the people reading your fics might have one#a lot of people just wont realize

WHAT THE FUCK?? Now I know this can come across as supportive like “There’s no cure just accept them for the way they are” I guess in a sense… but this whole woman’s TikTok page is about narcissism and how terrible people with npd are. What is wrong with abliests… like I feel like this is wishing death to people with npd am I insane??? Am I the only one who feels this way?? Like she tags her posts with #npdawareness just to post vile things about them. People forget PEOPLE WITH NPD ≠ ABUSERS.

why don't we societally look at white people using aave like white people with dreads? and is it rupaul's drag race
#this is not to say i never use aave!#societal language evolution can make it challenging to even know#but if we treated it that way we'd know and we'd largely stop#i guess the ignorance does make it harder to get consistent stigma#esp with new trends all the time

Just saying that I was so excited about Hobie Brown when he came on-screen the first time I saw the movie.
And then I got punched in the gut with the "narcissist" thing. Felt like I had gotten a bucket of cold water thrown at me. I still think about it a lot.
Is Spiderverse good? Absolutely, but I am still angry that that was apparently necessary.
Dunno man. Just ouch.

been working to really identify my emotions and my state of mind. and i've decided i actually hate it. im too aware of the fact that im mentally ill. i am too aware of the fact that i am not normal. i can handle being depressed, but i cant handle whatever else is going on in my brain.
#there's such high stigma around a lot of the mental health symptoms i experience and it scares me to be so aware of it#i fear the potential diagnosis i could get#i fear the language i connect to and relate to#and i feel bad because. these things aren't inherently bad!! and i don't want to further stigmatize mental illness!!#but. i am scared. and i deal with so much already.#being aware of my mental state has only made me worse

i agree that making fun of other cultures and languages is generally rude and harmful and not okay but let's not pretend that americans making fun of white western europeans is like. peak xenophobia lmao
#i knowww it isn't nice to hear americans making fun of like. german or swedish or whatever#but it's also just white people who speak a germanic language making fun of other white people who speak a germanic language#if u wanna go on a rant about yankee cunts that's totally fine#but please remember that in the grand scheme of the world you are p much just as privileged as an american#and even in america people who speak those languages do not face the stigma that people who speak other languages do#people with spanish names can't even put them on job applications half the time and that language is actually super widely spoken here#just. have some perspective if ur gonna be yelling at people lol
