Fic idea: You know that time Bane killed Alfred? It spreads around Gotham the Bane killed Bruce Wayne's kindly old butler in front of Batman to get to him, Gothamites as usual assume anything other than Bruce being Batman (Alfred was The Batman's actual father and raised him and Bruce together obviously), and the batfam collectively loses their shit and are all about as brutal as Bruce was when Jason died. Jason on the other hand is as clinical as usual as Red Hood which everyone finds odd since he was arguably the closest to the old butler even if you include Bruce.

Then one day shortly after Alfred's funeral as the batfam sans Jason are depressedly flicking through TV channels they flick onto the news and what do they see?

Jason is in his "Prince of Gotham" suit sans mask and domino at what looks like a press conference outside of the WE building and after answering a few cursory questions about what he's doing and how everyone is coping with Alfred's murder then Jason stares directly into the camera and challenges Bane to a fight, no weapons, just straight hands and to the death. He then says to meet him at Gotham stadium and says to be there at noon a week from then.

Everyone in Gotham, especially the Batfam, is quite honestly terrified for him and about this because sure he's built like a brick shithouse now and it's an open secret that he's the Red Hood but this is *Bane* and he has just gotten on live TV and challenged him to basically a boxing match to the death. Throughout the entire time leading up to it everyone is trying to dissuade him in various ways but he remains firm.

Then the date comes and the stadium is absolutely packed and being watched by a few tens of millions live on TV (how is Jason allowed to broadcast what most people think will be his swift bloody execution at midday? He doesn't know, ask Tim.) and then we see Jason and Bane in opposite corners of the ring. Bane is in his usual attire and still being supplied with Venom as usual and Jason is in wonder woman sweats with some unholy combination of combat boots and slippers and no shirt, baring all his scars to the crowd.

Then the bell sounds and Jason starts grinning maniacally before rushing Bane and slowly shattering as many of Bane's bones as possible as he doesn't even flinch at Bane's punches. Then it's over. Jason is straddled over Bane's corpse after having bashed his head into a greeny-red paste that is currently coating him. The arena is silent for what feels like hours but is probably only a minute max before erupting into a cacophony of cheering and chanting and screaming. Jason manages to push himself up and wander over to Bruce before prompting falling into him and passing out in his arms with a murmured "I'm sorry and you're welcome."

Also yes this is part of my agenda of making the Lazarus Pits more than just The Fountain of Youth but Angy™

I have seen drawings of Robin Jason with a gap in his teeth, and even if it’s not drawn like that, kids usually have not very straight teeth. Do you think the Lazarus pit straighten Jason’s teeth for him or did he have braces for a while before coming back as red hood, or, of course, does he just have perfect looking teeth? 

Even worse. I think the Lazarus Pit made all his old teeth fall out (even the adult ones) and he grew back new, adult teeth while coming back to life fully. Maybe they’re even a little sharper. Especially the incisors.

Is it just me or does Jason not have catatonia in Red Hood: Lost Days?

It's been driving me crazy the more I think about it, his symptoms are way more consistent with dissociation than catatonia (not to mention the etiology fits much better. If you just gave me the list what happened to him and I had to pick what disorder he was most likely to suffer from (in RH: Lost Days) without describing anything, my bet would be on dissociation no question asked)

This is has enormous implications when it comes to the Lazarus Pit and what it can and cannot heal, how to calculate Jason's age, the diagnostic hypothesis we have for Jason and so much more. Am I missing something? Why does Winnick keep referencing to Jason's symptoms as catatonia?

Layer 1)

He was legitimately wandering around as a ghost for a good while after his death. Gotham doesn't let go of her dead easily, especially her favorites, and Jason was her Prince.

He haunted the manor and Dick, assumed to be a hallucination.

Layer 2)

The Shockwave of the Superboy Prime Punch raises Jason's corpse, without his soul being returned, in its grave. It's not the only one, but it will be the only one who won't just die again that night.

The mindless husk has nothing left but the remnants of Jason's murder. It's a revenant, zombie, undead monster running on instincts.

Jason's ghost follows it. He's not strong enough to possess even his own corpse. He can do nothing as Talia stumbles across it.

Layer 3)

The pit is a cursed thing.

It forces the ghost, locked outside the loa territory by centuries of warding, back into his rapidly unbroken body.

The waters are poison though. They fuel the Revenants rage and try to steal his happy memories as payment.

The ghost shatters.

...

A revenant gets an unending hunger for justice and vengeance. The pain and trauma of a street rat turned frustrated vigilante.

A golden ghost is pulled back into Gotham's cursed arms. The Robin, full of hope, and Jason Todd-Wayne, the child who had so much potential combined.

The smallest splinters are eaten by the pit. Small memories that won't be missed at first, but will become the foundation for a thousand rifts between Father/Brother and prodigal son.

...

Souls can heal. Fragments will become whole, eventually.

Jason Todd will never be that boy who died again.

I'm writing more for my Lazarus Pit side effects series!! Yes, I'm talking about the series that starts with and when I wake up, let me be :) has it been a whole year? Yes. Do I regret taking this long? Nah.

I have three more stories in mind. It'll take time because there's a lot going on in my life, and I can't wait to tell you guys all about it!!

jason’s revitalization needs to have more side effects. yeah sure, there’s the pit madness, but that’s mostly mental.

i’m talking physical side effects, something akin to compensatory shock or dysautonomia.

pallor and clammy skin, maybe even a little cold to the touch, nausea, narrowed pulse pressure, tachycardia, all things that would usually be a huge glaring warning sign that’s something’s wrong. have his pupils dilated or constricted at the wrong times, his hands with delayed and or diminished feeling because the blood doesn’t flow correctly. give him horrible temperature regulation.

lean into dysautonomia a little more and give him a hyperactive sympathetic nervous system. fight or flight that kicks in fast, the buzz of adrenaline always under his finger tips. syncope episodes when he doesn’t eat properly, but with his sympathetic nervous system in overdrive, he’s nauseous around food and eating more than a snack makes it so much worse, and him having to learn to balance on the tightrope that is his body.

cheating death should have a permanent price to remind you what you’ve done even if you never wanted to in the first place

The Lazarus pit wasn’t a lasting solution. It takes much longer for Jason to realize or even admit this than it should. If you ignore your health issues long enough, they should go away, right?

The first thing that Jason notices, when he finally has enough of himself back to notice things, is that he heals a lot quicker than he used to. Which was strange, right?  But, you know, even if Talia didn't find anything it was probably fine.  He'd died and come back to life and got dunked in a pool of ominous magic juice.  That could probably excuse a lot of weird new discoveries, right? Right?

66 days left in the year and 37k words I still have to write if I want to meet my goal of at least 50k words published in 2024.

Lazarus Pit Madness is an incredibly popular headcanon and I personally love it but what if it wasn't the Pit making Jason mad and killing people and stuff.

What if the madness was caused by the All-Blades?

Picture this: when Jason comes out of the Pit he's Pit Mad for a couple days and then gets an episode every couple of months for about a year then everything is good and Talia eventually sends him to the All-Caste and goes through the training there and gets the All-Blades as normal.

Now as far as I'm aware the All-Blades are exclusively for use against magical threats and things that are deemed Evil™ so what if the All-Blades whisper to him about the sins of those around him (especially those who are magic in some way) it should be a cacophony of noise all the time but it doesn't really effect him and stranger still, despite it sometimes being hundreds of voices overlapping you could pick out anyone and he'd be able to recite all their sins by heart.

The times where he goes truly off the rails like a rabid animal are usually when someone has committed a sin that he personally considers truly evil (usually stuff involving kids) but the problem is that in this state he is assimilated partially with the All-Blades causing his mortality to become more similar to them and also being fairly indiscriminate in doling out judgement. (Titan's Tower for example was only as bad as it was because Slade decided to spy in person and his list of crimes set him off)

Basically I'm saying we should explore other reasons for Jason's violence and extremes other than the Pit or him being fully aware.

DAMIEN WAS MISSING

He was supposed to be on a mission with Young Justice, off world and off coms, for 2 weeks.

Jon was waiting in the hanger, Damien's favorite milkshake in hand. The shuttle opened...to Hood?

Why was Hood with the team?

"Damien" had gotten in contact the day before they were supposed to leave.

Jon was in the Zetas in less than a blink, exiting the Questions Zeta in less than a minute, and speeding off to the only ones who'd be able to pull this off.

Nanda Parbot's hidden entrance cracked open to reveal...a tomb.

The walls were soaked in blood. Unidentifiable parts were thrown every which way.

There was a heartbeat. It wasn't human.

X ray vision revealed what looked like Damien, lea-eating from a corpse, but the heartbeat didn't match. None of the other bodies were Damien though, so it must be him.

What happened here?
